17 Days of Wishes Come to Life- A Sept. 08 WDW and DCL Adventure 3/27 new link posted

Glad you are back home. You lasted alot longer than I would - I'm guessing I wouldn't have made it through the first night. You have a great way of seeing the best side of everything!

I'm so glad that everything's back up and running! The longest black out we've had was back in the summer of 2003 when all of NYC was powerless for 24-hours. It was in the summer and we have an enclosed porch, so my cousins and all our neighborhood friends came over and we put blankets and pillows down and all spent the night on the porch! I know what you mean about it being fun - sometimes it's nice not having the TV, computer or video games taking up time, and just getting to all huddle up together in the dark and hang out and joke around. It's such a cool "out-of-the-ordinary" feeling, but it's definitely harder in the winter. We were without heat for 4-hours on the day of New Years Eve and it drove me crazy - I have no idea how you did it for so long! I'm glad you're all OK though and that everything's back to normal! :goodvibes

Glad you are back, and YEAH for good quality family together time!! :thumbsup2

After a flurry of showers and changing, we were ready for dinner. On this night we would be eating in Animator's Palate. Along the way, we stopped and had our pictures taken. Here are a few of the ones we ended up buying.

Our Little Prince once again dug into the bread and throughly enjoyed it.

Looking up as Gavin (our amazing assistant server) was talking to him.

Yet more bread eating.

As much as he loved the bread, he loved the company too. The kids would all take turns trying to make him smile the biggest. Here's Cinderella taking her turn.

I really enjoy eating at Animator's Palate. It really is so much fun. The entire restaurant is black and white when you enter. The walls, the ceilings, the table settings, the chairs, everything. As the night progresses, color is added to the dining room. The walls start to show colorful scenes from Disney movies. Lights start to add color to the ceilings. Even the wait staff makes a change from black and white attire to full color! It's a great experience. If you ever cruise DCL, do NOT miss the Animators Palate dinner show. It's so much fun!

While I don't remember what I had for dinner (I cannot find my notes for the day and I am lost without them), I do have pictures. Sorry for the lack of descriptions.

The kids all loved that Gavin and Sameer would both talk directly to them. Instead of treating them like 'just kids' they made them feel like important guests. Two thumbs WAY UP for Disney for such great service. Here are a few pictures of the kids being treated very well. Note the black and white vest on Gavin (pre color change) and all of the black and white in the background.

He was taking orders, telling them jokes and asking about their day.
Disn2008150.jpg

Even our youngest was subject to the same attentive service. Did I mention yet just how amazing our wait staff was? ;)

Goofy and Cinderella and a better view of the colorless dining room.

Disn2008153.jpg

Very slowly, color starts to appear. First in the animated pictures on the wall and in the panels of the ceiling. The giant paint brushes also start to glow with colors.

Aladdin and Abu looking bored. They were antsy this evening because we insisted that they stay for the color change and dessert.

In this picture, I even caught the 'sparkle' of color coming to a picture.

And once all of the colors were in...
kwdw208003.jpg

My meal...steak (of some sort), scallops and potatoes. I remember it being very good...I just don't remember the details.
Disn2008157.jpg

Our Little Prince loved the characters on the wall!
Disn2008154.jpg

At the big "color change" Mickey Mouse appears and leads the wait staff on a winding path throughout the dining room. The wait staff are now all attired in bright colorful vests and ties instead of only black and white. There's music and waving and dancing and it's just a bunch of good festive fun!

After the color change, it was time for dessert!
Dh's blondie bar sundae.

Strawberry shortcake (shared by the whole table).
kwdw208030.jpg

I cannot remember what mine was! :scratchin It sure does look good though!
kwdw208031.jpg

Cheesecake for Aladdin.

Second half to follow in next post.

And of course, the younger kids all chose Mickey bars with sprinkles on top(yet again).
kwdw208026.jpg

The reason our very antsy-to-get-to-Ocean-Quest boys could not leave dinner was that this was the evening we had chosen to have Goofy and Abu's birthday celebration. Each of them had a birthday within two weeks of the sailing date (Goofy two weeks before, Abu two weeks after). Here is our head server clapping and singing to Abu and Goofy. We all had fun clapping and singing along with them.
IMGP1042.jpg

IMGP1043.jpg

And the rest of the birthday well wishers (aka wait staff that was singing to them).
kwdw208021.jpg

My happy little birthday Goof.
kwdw208024.jpg

An up close look at the birthday cake that each boy got. Nobody had any room left to even start to eat it. So, Sameer just wrapped it up for us to take back to our room.
kwdw208023.jpg

We found this 'friend' hanging out in our stateroom when we got back.
kwdw208034.jpg

Stitch couldn't resist monkeying around. HA HA.
kwdw208033.jpg

Of course, he had to stop and visit the one in our connecting stateroom as well.
kwdw208035.jpg

I guess he talks monkey?
kwdw208036.jpg

Even Aladdin stopped to pose with our primate friend. This would be the last time I saw Aladdin before 1:00 AM! Once we let him go to Ocean Quest, it would have taken a miracle to get him to leave.
kwdw208037.jpg

We dropped off Stitch, Cinderella and Goofy in the kid's clubs and made our way toward the Walt Disney Theatre to see Twice Charmed. I really enjoy this 'original twist the Cinderella story'. And I was looking forward to seeing it again.

However, I was side tracked. In the sitting area right in front of the Walt Disney Theatre sat Harrison Ellenshaw. You may not have heard of him, but I am willing to bet you have seen his art (and that of his father). He paints AMAZING pictures. If I were 'made of money', I would snap every single one of them up. Seriously, I see how people become addicted to art. The works of both Peter (his father) and Harrison (who was on the cruise as a guest artist) touch my heart. They paint scenes filled with light and movement and energy. They are also both Disney artists. The works they create are so fanciful and so full of wonder that I found myself staring at them over and over again every time I passed one (they set them up in the hallway during the cruise). BUT...I am getting ahead of myself. What I saw as we were walking into the theatre was him painting a picture of Cinderella's coach passing a large clock tower with her castle (to be) in the background. The moon was full and the light was illuminating everything with an almost magical sparkle. Even though the picture was only about 40% of the way done, I could tell that it was something special. I couldn't pull myself from watching him work. So instead of going to see a show about Cinderella's story, I sat in a cozy chair and watched her story come to life on canvas instead.

Let me back up about 12 years. Almost twelve years ago, I made my first 'real art' purchase. And it was for our then unborn first child's nursery walls. I bought this painting (not the original, but a quality reproduction that was still WAY pricey for us at the time). It has hung in the room of each of my boys when they were a baby and also in our school room. I absolutely love this painting. I love the way the light plays with the leaves. I love the characters. I love the subtle highlights. I just love it, period. So, I was instantly drawn to an artist with a very similar style and name (his dad had painted the original). My painting doesn't actually have Christopher Robin in it, he was later added by Harrison Ellenshaw. I have the original version by Peter Ellenshaw.

Click here to see a small portion of their Disney works. Be prepared to love them! At least, I do!! http://www.ellenshaw.com/disneyart.htm

So, for two hours, I sat entranced, watching every brush stroke and talking with him as he painted. He was, by far, one of the most interesting people I have ever talked with. Earlier I said, I was sure you had seen his work. The reason for that is he painted the backgrounds (they use painted backgrounds in movies sometimes to get what they want when they cannot create it in real time/size). His mattes are seen in Star Wars, Tron, The Empire Strikes Back, Superman IV, Ghost, Dick Tracy and The Black Hole! So, was I right about you seeing his work? ;) Also, he worked at Disney and headed up the Buena Vista Visual Effects group which worked on many Disney movies and non Disney movies like Dave, Honey I Blew Up the Kid, The Santa Clause, James and the Giant Peach, The Phantom, Mortal Kombat, Escape from LA and The Pelican Brief. Along with all of that, he supervised the digital restoration of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Top that all off with his own fine art and collaborating with his father and you have one VERY talented and interesting man.

While he painted, he told stories of growing up knowing Walt Disney himself. He enjoyed Christmas at the home of Walt Disney his first Christmas living in California. Walt Disney himself picked up Harrison as a child and set him on a toy steam train that ran around his estate and gave him a ride! Harrison was also the first person to get to ride on the steam train at Disneyland while Walt himself looked on smiling!

His father, Peter Ellenshaw worked on over 34 Disney films, put in a lot of work on designing the attractions at Disneyland and was a close personal friend of Walt E. Disney. He even won an Oscar for his work in Mary Poppins and nominated for three Academy Awards for his work in Disney films. Walt Disney Studios designated him a "Disney Legend" and commissioned him to do fine art paintings of scenes from Disney movies.

As you can tell, I was totally entranced by the works of art and the stories behind them...I only pulled myself from watching him paint after two hours because dh got fidgety. Ha ha. Since all of our children were being taken good care of in various kids clubs and the nursery, we made our way outside and took a long romantic stroll around the deck. At the end of our stroll we made our way to the self serve ice cream station and shared a bowl. It was a very relaxing and perfect cap to an already amazing day. :goodvibes

What a wonderful way to spend the evening, and what a special treat to get to talk to him and watch him work for so long!! I wish I could afford some of those paintings, they are beautiful - I have "Cinderella's Grand Arrival" in puzzle format, I guess that's going to have to do for now! :lmao:

You are right I have seen and admired their work, so neat that you got to watch him paint and have a conversation with him. :goodvibes

I love that artwork. Like you said, if I had a lot of money I would buy them all.

Jay! I am loving the trip report! Now I have a desire to go see Paradise Beach and have some Shrimp Ceviche! YUM!!!!!

Wow Peter Ellenshaw's art is amazing. I love all the castle ones, and the We Can Fly, Tinkerbell and So This is Love Cinderella one. I will have to add them of my list of things to look out for.

Sounds like another perfect evening, you guys must have had so much fun.

So glad you are back home and have power! :goodvibes
What a great night you had! The dining room sounds amazing - so neat how it starts in black and white and the color is slowly added. The dessert pictures were making me drool over my keyboard! Very cool birthday cakes! And then, to watch a great artist at work and get to spend time talking with him - what a treat! Thanks for the links -I love his pictures - if I win the lottery I'll be buying several of them! :lmao:

How amazing to talk to someone who actually knew Walt. What a talent and what an interesting career they have both had. I would have picked that over the show as well. I love the paintings and may end up buying one in the future.

Wow.. what an amazing experience! To speak with the actual artist himself, AND get to watch the master at work. You must have been in heaven.
I took some time to browse through his online gallery. Bea-u-ti-FUL! I also took some time to look at some websites that sell the original pieces by him as well as his father.. let's just say.. some of the more INEXPENSIVE ones can be bought for the price of a small house :scared1: But they sure are gorgeous!

I agree! The artwork is fantastic! I can see why you stayed and soaked it all up.... what he was painting... listening to all he had to say. :thumbsup2
The monkey in your room was great! I am surprised at what the CM's come up with!

I am still doing the happy dance over the time I got to watch him at work. He is truly a very gifted person. I have started a savings account soley for the purpose of purchasing an origianal painting. It might take me a few years, but I WILL own an original. I love his works (and those of his father). Right now, I just have the gilcee (it's a fancy copy with the same paint depth and everything but NOT the original). A girl has to have her dreams. ;)

You are right I have seen and admired their work, so neat that you got to watch him paint and have a conversation with him. :goodvibes
I guess you can tell that I was more than a bit excited about my evening. It really was one of my most interesting encounters. So fascinating! I have even more stories to share about me and art on this cruise. ;)

I love that artwork. Like you said, if I had a lot of money I would buy them all.
I didn't buy them all...but I may have ended up purchasing a little something or other. ;)

Beautiful art work!
I know. Their styles remind me of Thomas Kincade combined with the impressionists combined with the impressionists (Monet, Renior, Sisley and Pissaro especially) combined with Walt Disney and mixed heavily with influence on each other. I love how they paint light, movement and wind and other 'unseen' parts of a scene. I have a great respect for their talent.

Jay! I am loving the trip report! Now I have a desire to go see Paradise Beach and have some Shrimp Ceviche! YUM!!!!!
Oh that shrimp cerviche. EVERY time it crosses my mind I try to come up with a scheme to get back to Paradise Beach! ;)

Wow Peter Ellenshaw's art is amazing. I love all the castle ones, and the We Can Fly, Tinkerbell and So This is Love Cinderella one. I will have to add them of my list of things to look out for.

My list of 'things to look for' has gotten so long that I would need a team of people to carry it behind me.:lmao: I am interested in way too many things! ;)

So glad you are back home and have power! :goodvibes

I am so very thankful for our power! It's funny how you forget to be thankful for something until you don't have it anymore. :rotfl: However, I am now very thankful for the power, running water and heat. ;)

The desserts were all so good. I loved how our server would bring extra plates of them out and set them in the middle of the table for us to share. Sameer was so attentive to the little details and really made our meals wonderful.

If I win the lottery...I will be in line right behind you. :thumbsup2

How amazing to talk to someone who actually knew Walt. What a talent and what an interesting career they have both had. I would have picked that over the show as well. I love the paintings and may end up buying one in the future.
I was amazed by his stories of Walt and it's easy to see how someone growing up in a home where Walt Disney and other stars/directors/creative people visited regularly and your own dad being a great example of creativity and style would influence you to dream big. Can you imagine being able to wander through Disneyland before it opened? Commenting on what you liked as a child and what didn't make sense and having people (including Walt) listening to you?!

Wow.. what an amazing experience! To speak with the actual artist himself, AND get to watch the master at work. You must have been in heaven.

Now you see the reason why I had to start a savings account in preparation for buying an original one day. :hourglass There are few 'things' I would consider worth the price tags on those paintings...

I agree! The artwork is fantastic! I can see why you stayed and soaked it all up.... what he was painting... listening to all he had to say. :thumbsup2
The monkey in your room was great! I am surprised at what the CM's come up with!
We really enjoyed all of our towel animals during the cruise. They were so big and grand! It was so much fun to guess what would be waiting for us each night upon our return from dinner. :thumbsup2

DCL Day 6...An Amazing Day at Sea!

Our morning started with breakfast on deck. We all sat watching the waves and clouds (other than dh who couldn't do so due to motion sickness) and nibbling on our food. It was nice to enjoy that time together as a whole family. But...as soon as we were done with our meal, Aladdin took leave of his family and made his way to Ocean Quest. Dh took the middle boys to their respective clubs and I took our Little Prince and dropped him off at Flounder's Nursery. And then, what did our childless selves do? Well, we went back and enjoyed the Exotic Rasul spa treatment for a second time! It was so relaxing and so much fun the first time that YEP, we felt the need to enjoy it again!

After our time at the spa (I was VERY relaxed and soft and happy) it was time for lunch already! We made our way to the sea food buffet in Parrot Cay and I ate shrimp and crab until I was so stuffed that another bite would have been a mistake. ;) For the non sea food lover (dh) there was plenty of 'other' stuff to keep him happy. It was a nice meal alone together. Not the Palo brunch that we had been hoping for but very nice in and of itself.

We had a long leisurely lunch and at the end of it, we went our separate ways for two very different afternoons. Dh was off to pick up our Little Prince and the two of them were off to watch an ice carving demonstration near Goofy's pool. I would have loved to join them...but I had a little thing called an art auction to attend. ;) As I ventured over to the main lobby, I noticed that I was a bit early. So, I took a seat on a sofa located above the main lobby and near the 'art gallery' hall and relaxed for a bit. When I saw Harrison Ellenshaw walking by, I made sure to say hello. To my great and very happy surprise, he stopped to chat! It was again, an amazing conversation. We talked about art and movies and a bit more about Walt Disney and I can tell you that I was once again, throughly interested in everything he said. ;) One of the most interesting things we discussed was light. How it plays off of different surfaces and the way it acts so differently when bounces off of different things. Like plastic and glass for instance. The large chandelier that hangs over the lobby (the bright many colored trumpet shaped sculpture/light fixture) was made by glass artist Dale Chihuly. Chihuly usually works only in glass. Thus why he is considered a glass artist. BUT...the weight of a glass sculpture of that size was not a good match with a floating home so instead of glass, the fixture is actually mostly acrylic! It's plastic!! And I have seen Chihuly's works exhibited other places and thought they were beautiful and amazing but I never noted the difference until the pointed it out. Glass reflects light differently than plastic (acrylic) so you could tell just by looking that it was not glass! I had been on three cruises and never looked closely enough to see that but once he pointed it out, I really had no trouble seeing the fact that I was looking at plastic and not glass.

After a bit, I excused myself in order to go and look at his works to see if there was anything I wanted (HA HA HA...I wanted it all). Actually it was more like looking to see if there was anything I could afford. :lmao: I also signed up for a bidder number and was entered into the grand prize drawing which was to immediately follow the art auction. If you won, you would get to pick from a set group of limited edition lithographs.

Up next...the art auction...would I be able to purchase anything? :scratchin
