As the heading reads sad times at the moment. I wouldn't normally post such things but I'm so worried about my hubby and the upcoming trip we've waited for 2 years to go on I felt I had to share !

He's on painkillers and we are resorting to acupuncture treatment next week to help with his pain and then a trip to see an osteopath anything that might help even though it all costs and is not cheap! Does anybody else have experience such as this just before they went away? :((

My Wife started with back problems just before we went in 2009, she took painkillers from Doc but didn't help much. Thankfully we were flying business class so she wasn't stuck in an economy seat, in Atlanta airport a member of the security team saw she was in pain so she got us a wheelchair and fast tracked us. In all the parks we rented a wheelchair.
Its just something we had to deal with and changed our plans to work.
Good luck.

You have 16 days, he could be much better by then. I would see a chiropractor, do the acupuncture (worked great when my husband had this problem) and get a massage. Something will give him relief. Good luck.

Thanks I'm praying all the planned treatment will help relieve the pain and of course the sunshine makes us all fell a little better doesn't it! Xx

Where does he have the trapped nerve? Is it on the right hand side going into his leg? Lower back ? I see an osteopath but mine is lowerback and neck. He cld ask his GP for diazapam and volterol supposatorys. . They are excellent but he would have to specifically ask.
I do empathise with him but as others have said he has 16 days and hopefully it will release. Good luck keep the warmth on it and alternate with a bag of frozen peas. X

Thank you , it's his right shoulder and the pain radiates down his arm. Does your osteopath help relieve the pain? I also wondered if anybody had any advice on travel insurance as we will be declaring this to them but who do people recommend? Thanks again xx

I would ask the GP what treatment he recommends given the timeframe you have and go privately. If you are in a hospital fund you may be able to claim back some of the cost.

He probably needs physio treatment of some sort.

I hope he gets better quickly.

Hi we are having to go private which we don't mind as needs must of we want a relatively pain free adventure!

Hiya

So sorry to hear about your DH.

I trapped a nerve in my neck Christmas 2011 lifting shopping in to the boot of our car, so I can massively apprecaite your husbands pain.

I would often get a pins and needles type sensation in my head, intense pain down my arm, really sore shoulder etc...

The only thing that worked for me was physio and corrective posture therapy.

I would suggest a sports therapist as my Physio said general massage therapist can make matters even worse when it comes to trapped nerves.

Good Luck

Thank you , I have heard different things about different treatments so its been very difficult trying to understand which will work best. We are hoping the acupuncture and osteopath will help we can but hope! I don't even want to ask how long yours took to heal as I'm afraid of the answer! :) x

I just wanted to add about painkillers, voltoral as mentioned by crabbie is AMAZING for this kind of pain and also won't effect him by making him sleepy, also diazepam is fantastic for relieving and relaxing the nerves,
All I would say is go and ask the doctor about these meds then try them out for a few days at least 5-7 days before you fly as this way you will know exactly how they effect him! " last thing you want is for him to be a zombie all trip". Maybe use voltoral during the day and diazepam at night to get a good nights sleep as most pain will be felt when starting to relax and wind down!

I've travelled with a few issues to Disney but 1 that kind of relates to the fact your DH might have to use a chair,
I have problems with my hips that effect me on an off due to being in the royal ballet and have had to use crutches and a wheelchair at Disney. It was on my wedding and honeymoon and I felt so insecure about the fact I was able to walk some of the time and be in a wheel chair at other times especially as I was only 23 and looked perfectly healthy!! but I learned to not care what people think by the end of the 2 wks! So tell you DH that a chair can be a complete life saver and if its a choice of being in pin and doing next to nothing which will ruin his trip OR feeling a little silly to start with then go with feeling silly :D lol

It took a while ;) but some days were better than others. Also try to encourage your DH to resist carrying heavy items. I still have minor pain, but had to discipline myself on the lifting and carrying as this would massively increase the next days pain.

But everyones different, I agree with the suggestion of Volterol. I also was prescribed 600mg Ibuprofen which helped with the inflamation on the nerve plus a diazapen/tamazapan for relaxing the muscles around the nerve.

Again, I cant stress enough how helpful physio was, as often just your day to day posture will aggrevate the trapped nerve. Still to this day I keep my shoulders pulled back to the point of were it feels abnormal and resist slouching over laptops etc....

Thank you so much for all the advice it's helpful to have all the suggestions for when he visits the GP next week. Could I just ask about voltoral and diazepam do we just ask the GP for this medication and he will prescribe?

Do they offer steroid injections in the UK?

Hi I think they do but that kind of treatment I think is only offered after a few months of having the condition from what I've read, but could be wrong x

Thank you he has currently 400mg of ibuprofen and is taking co codemol but will be going back Tuesday to see the GP about pain relief so all your suggestions will be written down and I will ask him to take with him or he may forget what I've said! Once he's had the acupuncture and osteopath appt we will know more about how he is feeling.

I'm starting to try a little more excited about the trip but its so hard knowing he may be suffering whilst we are away .

Hi yes just get him to tell the doctor that he has a big trip coming up which includes being sat on a plane for 8/9 hours, and that he would like to try the voltoral and diazepam for relief there should t be any issues getting a prescription for these meds,
Just make sure he tries out the diazepam at night before he travels so he can gage the effect it has on him :)

As tink says volterol are a strong anti-inflammatory. It depends what strength cocodam ol as well. There are 8/500 and 30/500. There is also codyramol which I take for my neck and back along with naproxcyn. I actually saw these in the Disney resort shop tonight. Just watch if your husband takes too many anti inflamm they can upset the gut causing pain. Ranitidine can be taken.
I do think the osteopath is ur best bet. Diazapam diclofenic(volterol) and the stronger co codamol. Also alternate the heat and cold packs.
Let us know how he gets on. Im here in orlando at the moment and its hot hot hot. Something to look forward to.

Sorry to hear this.

Regular painkillers is the key - if you wait until the pain flares again you are just playing catch up! A word of warning - be cautious how you ask your doctor for diazepam. Another drug that is often helpful is a drug called amitriptyline - its a very old fashioned antidepressant that works well in low doses for nerve pain. It can make people feel a bit spaced out though.

Steroid injections can be done, and are often helpful for arm pain, but have to be done under X-ray guidance, and even privately may take a few days to arrange.

The other alternative (horrid though it is) - can you cancel your trip and get insurance to pay for a new one? Even if the treatments help, it's likely to take some time for things to settle, and you will almost certainly not enjoy the holiday as much.

I hope you find a solution.
