For our post cruise we'll be driving Miami to Orlando where we'll be spending 9 days. I've tentatively booked a 15 Passenger Van with Alamo. The rate was too good to pass up and with all the luggage and kids I figured, heck why not, besides DH is driving not me! lol

For anyone that has rented these in the past, is there anything we should know up front about renting these types of vans (ie: insurance etc.)? I remember a couple of years ago others rented these because the rates were so good.

Thanks :)

One thing, they area for luggage is practically nonexistant. You cannot fold down the seats and they cannot be removed. I know you have to sign an addendum to the rental for a 15pax. They suck gas. They are pretty bare bones. If you are not taking insurance, check with your insurance company about renting one of these. If you can be accomodated with a regular mini van, it would be better.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can't drive a 15 passenger van over 50 MPH. They're really top heavy and driving them any faster than that makes them more likely to over turn. That's going to add another hour and a half to your drive. Even without adding in the extra insurance and extra gas, I don't think it's worth it.

Also, 15 passenger vans tend to be pretty uncomfortable and pretty bumpy. I wouldn't want to spend 5 hours in one.

If you are using your credit card for insurance check the "exemptions" One of mine does not cover things like this so....

I agree with pps! I have ridden to NYC (2 hours or so) in one of the 15 pasenger vans..not my idea of fun for 2 hours but not sure how it would be for 5. My dd2 also got carsick in it. Will you have 5 passengers? I drive a minivan daily and have taken it on our vacation trips and there is plenty of room for luggage and for everyone to have their own space. Is the difference in price (and gas and time) worth it?

May I ask how you got a great deal? We need one to transport a large group of people, (8 to 14 max) and the rates have been terrible. Two minivans were our best option so far.

Thanks!

I cant' take any credit for doing anything special, I just put our dates in and that turned out to be the cheapest car. Even cheaper than an economy...lol I got $473 for 10 days with Alamo.

Regarding how many people we have, 6 for sure....possibly 8. I guess we'll keep it for now until we know for sure how many people we have and possibly switch to a minivan if we stay at 6.

Thanks for all the suggestions :)

I would still pay the extra money for 2 mini vans unless you're going to be spending a very short time driving.

I agree, but this is to transport to and from the parks mostly and there are 6-10 in the group who can't/won't drive. I agree that they are not the most comfortable!

Thanks for the advice!
