DS woke up at 4 a.m. and threw up. He's been sick about 10 times since. And had diarhea about 3 times. Since he got home from Grandmas at 10:30 he's been asleep most of the day. Is that okay? Should I worry about dehydration? We're giving him toast and pedialyte. This last time he threw up it had been about 2-3 hours since he last threw up so he may be improviing. He's got a mild temp too. Rotovirus made its rounds at his daycare about a week ago but he never had any of the symptoms then. Any advice?

Do you have an advice line you can call at the Doctor's office? Does your son have wet diapers? He is 'out of it' not responding well (not just sleepy)? Is his mouth dry? Rotovirus is very nasty and once diarhea (sp?) starts deydration can come on quickly. My daughter had it when she was five and got dehydrated very quickly even though she was keeping in the pedialyte. She ended up spending two days in the hospital. Call the doctor's office b/c your son is still so little and dehydration is nothing to mess with. Best wishes to you and your little guy. I hope he feels better soon!

ETA: One last thing, I was at the ER the other day with my little guy. He was throwing up for about 4 hours and couldn't keep anything in. I called the advice line and they put the doctor on the phone with me. Just to be safe, she sent us to the ER so they could hydrate my little guy.

I would go to his doctor. Before I read your last couple of sentences I was thinking "that sounds like rotovirus"!!! Then when you said it had gone around, I would bet that is it. :thumbsup2

DD had it when she was 18 months old. She threw up on me all day. I ended up getting it when she was done. I tried SO hard to wash everything immediately, scrub us both head-to-toe after each episode, Lysol everything, but I still got it. And my symptoms didn't show up for a couple of days.

Blah. Good luck, and I hope your darling feels better soon.

I would call the local hospital and see what they say. I would think that any toddler that throws up 10 times in 24 hours needs to be seen by someone. Do you have one of those 24 hour call a nurse numbers? When my daughter was younger our ped gave us a card with a 24 hr call a nurse number and we sure used it! I'm sure this is terrifying for you. to you and your family. Let us know the little guy is okay.

This definitely sounds like rotavirus. My DD had this last year when she was 5.5 months old. It was a long, long week :( .

I would call your pediatrician, nurse hotline, etc. and see if you should go to the ER. Rotavirus can easily dehydrate a kid and you are just better off being safe than sorry with a child that age. I guess if you were able to get some pedialyte into your son's system, he'd probably be okay for a couple of hours, but then again, don't listen to me...I'm just some stranger on the disboards. Call the doctor!

Good luck... :grouphug:

Hi! I would definitely try to get your little one in or at least call the nurse. We've only been through the dehydration thing once when DD was 4. We took her to the doctor in the afternoon after about 10 hours of vomiting and the nurses practically through us out because she "just had a virus and they were busy with really sick kids". We had her back in there a few hours later and the doctor sent us immediately to the hospital where she stayed for a day and a half. Turned out my DD had Strep but no symptoms so no one tested her. She continued to throw up on an iv so the doctor had her tested and that turned out to be the problem. Don't mess around - you'll feel better if you get him checked out! Good luck!

I'd go to the ER.

Our 10 month old was sick a few weeks back and had some of the same symptoms. I didn't think anything of it at first. By the time we got to the Dr, her temp was 105.

Dr. thought it was rotovirus. Turns out it was Salmonella poisoning (determined by a stool culture). She could have quickly become gravely ill.

It doesn't take long at all for a small child to become dehydrated.

Please update us :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Dehydration would be my biggest and most immediate worry. Yes, I would go to see a doctor today. You need to make sure she is not dehydrated.

I hope she is feeling better soon. It's so sad when our little ones are sick. :grouphug:

We just had this with ds 20 months. He ended up in the hospital for 4 days because he got THAT dehydrated and we tried so hard to get him to drink. We thought we were doing ok until he just refused to drink anymore and was very lethargic. So we had to take him in and he was so dehydrated he had to have the iv in his neck because the veins in his arms and hands and even feet were unusable.

IF he is getting a good bit of liquid down, just keep watching him. The ER doctor said in toddlers, that 3 times or more of throwing up you should take them in. I think that's a little overboard but then again, the ER can help with nausia and take away the vomiting and diarreah to prevent from getting dehydrated.

Calling the doctor, they will pretty much tell you to take him in....

I called the nurse on call. She said to wait one hour after vomiting then give him 1 tsp of pedialyte every 10 minutes for 6-8 hours. So we've been doing that for an hour and so far so good. He cant have any food for 8 hours.

Right this minute he's playing but I dont know how long that'll last.

I feel terrible for saying this, but this is the WORST week for him to be sick. DH has to travel on Wednesday and has a crazy work week. My company is being sold to a HUGE corporation and the corp is coming on Wednesday for a 4 hour meeting with us (and then a trip to the Carolina Hurricanes skyboxes afterwards - which that isnt as important as the meeting - I have to be at the meeting though). And our house is going on the market Wednesday.

Poor little booger - I hope this is just 24 hour and NOT the rotovirus. And I really hope DH and I dont catch it. My Mom is on call tomorrow in case we have a rough night.

Thanks for all the advice - I can always count on the DIS for help.

If you can do more then 1tsp every 10 minutes, try to do it. That's what we were doing totally thinking he was getting enough and he wasn't....

Glad he's feeling better!
