Hi, i'm going on a cruise with my wife and two sons. My eldest son asked if he would be able to go into the teen club "Vibe". The cruise leaves 4/24, and his birthday is 4/26. So he will be turning 14 over the trip. So will he be able to go into the club?

You mean, he'll be 13 when the cruise starts, turning 14 during the cruise? He won't be UNDER 13.

They won't fudge at all on the upper limit (nobody age 18 gets in) but they might on the lower limit, you'll probably have to go ask them and figure out what will happen if they say no.

At 13 a child is in Edge.

At 14 a child can go to both Edge and Vibe.

It's my guess that they would let him participate in Vibe from the beginning of the cruise. But, worse case, he'll have to wait until his birthday to go to Vibe.

My understanding is that automatic placement on clubs are based on age at time of departure. The biggest issue has always been with the teens turning 18 during the cruise. In the past they've had to leave Vibe by midnight the night before they turned 18, but my understanding is that now they are not even allowed at Vibe at all. However, they are not allowed to Palo/Remy until after they turn 18. Still iffy, however, no matter what, once you turn 18, they do not allow you into Vibe under ANY circumstances, and there are no exceptions (legal issue).

With the lower age, they almost always allow leeway with the ages moving upwards. I honestly don't know if they allow moving 'downwards' though would not surprise me if they do not.

They only exception is when the club is at capacity. DCL has the list of those eligible for a particular club, and once they reach the limit, they do not even take additional cruise reservations (that's why they need birthdays when you make a reservation). In this rare case, your child might not be able to go to Vibe, specially if they continue to go by the departure age.

Chances are VERY slim of that happening. But your mileage may vary anyway...

My son turned 14 on the Dream, but stayed in Edge because he had already established friendships. But, it is my understanding that he can switch to Vibe on his BDay. If the clubs are not full, then he may be able to go to Vibe from the start.

They let a number of 13 year olds into Vibe last week on the Fantasy. It is at the discretion of the staff at the time. It seemed to be a younger cruise (not a lot of 17 year olds) so that may have played into it. They may have a parent sign a waiver. Some of the 13 year and even 14 year olds still preferred Edge just based on who they met early on (or even before they boarded).

My DS was 13 1/2 when we sailed the Dream in 2012. He was very unimpressed with the Edge. He went to Vibe during open house and wanted very much to stay. The CM had me sign a waiver and he was allowed to stay for the length of the cruise.

We sailed a week ago on the Dream. My dd is 13, and wasn't thrilled about hanging out with 11 year-olds in Edge. She was told that she was able to attend BOTH Edge and Vibe. We would just need to sign a waiver for her to attend Vibe. We didn't ask for an exception…they offered the option when we went to check it out for the first time.

Can anyone confirm if this is still true? Looking to book a cruise in late Summer. My DD will be 13, going on 14 the next month. She will be entering her Freshman year in high school and I am pretty sure she will prefer Vibe to Edge.

It is still at the discretion of the Youth staff onboard at the time of the cruise. The closer a child is to the aging-up birthday, the better the likelihood of being allowed to move up early -- but it does depend on the number of children of proper age on that particular cruise. If the space is full, they will not allow anyone to age-up. Summer cruises do get full with kids on summer vacation, so it's hard to say; no one online here can give you a definite answer. I'd prepare her for "no" and then be happy if she's allow at Vibe.

Enjoy your cruise!

Given that there are recent reports that the firm low age for the kids' club is 3, no exceptions, I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing reports that the bottom age for ALL the clubs is firm.

Thanks for your response. I guess if they are firm then there will still be a few kids her age in Edge. I am not even going to mention the option of moving up because she might be content. I just wanted to have something up my sleeve, just in case.

My twin boys, 8th grade, were turning 14 less than two weeks after we were on the Wonder in December 2014. They went to Vibe and were told they needed a parent to sign a form since they were 13 and "not on the list". When I went to sign the form we were told they recommend trying out the Edge first and then come back if didn't like it. They went to Edge and CM expressed surprise that they were "only" 13 (that age covers a huge range for boys, and I guess girls too, and they are on the older looking/acting side). A group of girls were coloring at a table and they thought it was too young for them. I signed the form in Vibe and they had a great time there hanging with the teens. They do have a 16 year old brother and interact with older teens in their extracurricular activities already.

Does anyone know if they will let a 13yo into the teen club if her 16 and 17yo sisters are in there? She doesn't want to take a cruise until she can get into the teen club, doesn't want to get stuck in the tween club when her sisters are in the other one. Do siblings with them make a difference? Her birthday will be just a few days prior, so she'll be barely 13. Does appearance make a difference? She is an average size child, looks pretty much exactly her age- not really younger or older. Thanks for any imput!

This is good to hear for DS13 to have an option if edge is not appealing to him. He is used to being around HS aged kids because of water polo. However I would like for he and DS10 to be together. I will see how it plays out...neither of my kids spent much time in the clubs last year.

Siblings' ages really makes no difference, nor do looks or grade. As noted previously, DCL may allow a 13-yr-old to age-up to Vibe if there is space. That won't be determined until after you are already onboard.

Your family is in a tough situation with the kids ages. Your youngest is enough younger than the older girls to be in a different space this year. However, once the oldest turns 18 she won't be allowed into any of the kids spaces except during Open House times. There are lots of onboard activities outside the Edge/Vibe that all 3 girls can do together.

Enjoy your cruise!

Depending on when your cruise is and how many kids of each age group are on that particular cruise, your children may not have options and they could be in different clubs. The 13-yr-old is the right age for Edge (11-14); he may be allowed to age up but only if there is space at Vibe (ages 14-17). Your 10-yr-old is the right age for the Oceaneer Club/Lab (3-12); she may be allowed to age-up to Edge if there is space. I'd prepare them for the right clubs, and consider it a bonus if allowed to age-up. Your 13-yr-old will NOT be allowed to age-down to the Club/Lab with the 10-yr-old.

Enjoy your cruise!
