13 year Cicadas - listen to them

Cool!! My daughter loves these things....although I've yet to see them in those numbers around here. But we find a few every year....and we can definately hear them!

I remember the 13 year cicadas. Their sound does seem like it is out of a sci-fi movie. I deliberately left my window open so that a few of them would come in for a visit. I love their red eyes!

They're so loud near the woods by our place, you can't even have a conversation. I'm so glad it's only supposed to last a few weeks.

those of you that want them, i wish you'd come to alabama and get them! they've been driving us crazy for a month now-we're surrounded on 3 sides by woods, and the buzzing is SO loud, you can hear it inside my house with the TV and ceiling fans on! I HATE THEM.

I absolutely LOVE the sound of cicadas!
It instantly takes me back to long summer evenings, hide and seek with the neighborhood kids, street lights, bomb pops...*SIGH* The good stuff!! :goodvibes

Of course, I do have to say that the noise in that video might get on my nerves after a while...they never got quite that loud in the city...LOL

Thx for sharing interesting article, cicades' life cycle is amazing. We've had our share in Md in past years, I loved them as a kid. :thumbsup2

Our DD (in NC) took her Brownie troop camping this weekend and said between the thunder storm/rain/cicadas, it made for a fun and interesting evening! :goodvibes

She sent a photo of our lil DGD collecting cicades shells!?

Have you heard any yet in your area? I have not heard a peep yet or seen any.

I can't stand them, cicadas freak me out! I never saw them until I moved to Long Island. The noise and looks of them are too creepy.

My DD use to collect their shells when she was younger, now that she's 20 she can't believe she did that. :rotfl:

They started in middle GA around Easter and when I was home at Mother's Day they were still going strong. I've seen that they should be hatching out here in TN soon so we'll see how loud they end up being.

We had ours, millions and millions of them, here in Chicago area about 2-3 years ago. Deafening sound from about 5-9 PM. Lasted about 6 weeks, then gone. They'll be back, about 10 years from now. We do have annuals, though many, many less and much less noisy.

To answer your question, I haven't heard any yet this year.
But I got curious and did a little research, and aparently there are 2 different types of cicadas here in Missouri.
There are the Dog Day Cicadas, and they generally come back every year. They're the ones I remember hearing as a kid. Their "song" has varied notes, from high to low.
The Periodical Cicadas are the ones that come every 13 years or 17 years. Their "song" has less varied notes, so they make a more constant noise (like the ones in the video). 2011 does happen to be a year for the 13 year cicada here in Eastern Missouri. Judging from what I've read, we'll likely start seeing and hearing them in late June to early July.

LOL sorry for all of the info. I was just curious about it. :lmao:

No thanks -- I have to listen to these dang things during the summer and they annoy the daylights out of me!!! Last thing I want to hear ANY time of year!

I read that last week. I hope I get to hear them here.:thumbsup2

You will. :yoda:

We always get lots of them in our yard. Be sure to keep your porch light turned off when you hear them, or you might end up running into them in ways that you won't like. They are about the size of a man's thumb, and when they fly blindly into you it's like getting hit with a rock.

Oh no, that is OK. I love the cicada's. Growing up here it is part of summer, you know?;)

I remember the 17 year cicada's and I remember being bummed because where we lived at in St. Charles, we just did not have the "deafening songs" like other areas. It was odd.:confused3

I don't get to hear the annual cicadas where I live at now and that bums me out.

So I am hoping we at least get to hear something this go round.:thumbsup2

I know when I was in Nashville over the last week they were EVERYWHERE and so loud! I hate cicadas! At least these aren't as big or quite so numerous as the 17 year cicadas we had in Maryland a couple of years ago. :scared1::scared1:

DH was laughing at me because I was seriously freaked out by the 17 year variety we had around here a couple of years ago (and when I was a little kid), and no sooner to we get to Nashville and get out of the car at the hotel, than I look down and say, "Oh God, is that a cicada?" I think we got into town just at the beginning of the... outbreak? Swarm? Plague? Whatever.

I live near Nashville and I have had enough of the Cicadas. I thought they were bad last week but I encountered several huge swarms today. One store I went to today must have had hundreds and hundreds hanging on the brick front. You couldn't even dodge them to get to the door. I just had to walk thru those flying around while swatting at them. I know they don't bite but I don't want them hanging on my clothes or in my hair. Uck! I understand being nostalgic for the sound but it is something else dealing with this huge number that we have around here. Let's just hope that this week is the peak or I am not leaving the house.
