13.1 Series Marathon - Boston Sunday June 27, 2010

Just quickly and I'll be back with more thoughts later. I yelled to two people probably around mile 4 who were wearing wish shirts. I hope I didn't startle you!

I also saw people wearing wish shirts before the race but by the time I got out of the port-a-potty you were gone. I looked after the race but didn't see anyone. I'm sorry I didn't catch up with anyone.

Katie, sorry this race had some issues! I would have loved to have run this race (since I am from MA originally) but I knew the rolling hills would be mountainous! As far as the entertainment's comments, that is just rude!!

That would be Lily & I. Nope you didn't startle us. Glad you yelled! :thumbsup2 :woohoo:

Here is my race report/thoughts on this race. I did also post this on the Race Report/Encouragement/Kudos Thread.

This is not a race I will ever do again & at this point it is highly unlikely I will ever do another from the 13.1 Series. This was an inaugural race for Boston but was not the first race for the 13.1 Series. There were too many things that just should not have happened.

First, no expo (which was not a problem), just go to a running store to pick up bib & wicking shirt. Get the shirts, they are a cool Wish green. Open the package to see the shirt, they are a generic 13.1 Marathon Series shirt that they can use at all of their races. WTH! The front says 13.1 Marathon Series, 2010 & an American Flag, all in black. The back shows an outline of the USA with the cities they hold races. If you wanted a shirt that said Boston on it you could purchase one for $19.99.

Next up….Race Morning. They had on-site parking & then overflow satellite parking which had shuttles back to the start. We got there early enough to park on-site. It was an old horse racing facility. They had you park in the inside field of the track. They did not mow the grass. In spots it was knee deep. Thankfully the grass was only damp in a few spots. We made our way across the track to the pre-race area. There did not look to be nearly enough port-o-potty’s. Since we were there early we used the facilities before there were lines. Then I kept an eye on them & as soon as there were a few people lined up, John & I jumped back on the line. By the time we were done the lines were really long & now going into the checked bag staging/holding area for the bags. People were stepping over checked bags trying to get through to other lines. Race start was out on the street. We walked towards the street but there was a big rock wall that ran parallel to the street. Some people were jumping up & climbing over. We opted for walking around. Get to the end of the wall & there now is a fence that runs in along the entrance road. We climbed the fence with everyone else while someone was trying to take down a section of the fence. This was only about 15 min before race start.

On to the race. National Anthem & we’re off. We were told the course was rolling hills. I guess that is a relative term as to what you are used to & the area you are in….to me it was rolling mountains. LOL It was a tough course. Very few level areas. Pretty much when you got to the top of a hill, you went down and when you got to the bottom you then went up again. The road was also pitched in a lot of the areas which was hard on the legs/knees. It was a pretty course in that it was mostly trees/woods and along a reservoir. You did get to see one view of Boston from the top of a hill (that you got to see twice since was on an out& back) Do to all the trees most of the course was in the shade, which was great since it was so hot. The worst hill started somewhere between mile 10 & 10.5 and didn’t end until mile 11. It just seemed to never end. By the time we got to the second water stop (at approx mile 4) they were almost out of cups. This was on an out & back and the stop served both sides. On the way back there were no cups. We had our own bottles so had them refill us. They had run out of cups at all the water stops. People were just sharing the gallon water containers taking sips. They did manage to get more cups out on the course but they missed way too many people who should have had water especially on such a hot day. The last water stop had apparently ran out of water along with the cups. They ended up getting small bottles of water that they were handing out. Running out of cups & water should not have happened, but on a positive, at least they made an effort to correct the problem. There was also no powerade/Gatorade on the course. There website said there would be. I don’t drink/use it, but if you were expecting it & needed it in the heat, you were in trouble. The worst is as we were entering the finish shoot, the clock was coming up on 3:28 & garmins were coming up on 3:27, they were pulling up the timing mats & they pulled one of the side fences across about 10 feet in front of us. We ran around the section of fence & crossed the finish line without timing mats. We weren’t sure if we would end up with a finish time. Others behind us were doing the same. This was soooo wrong. There was a 3:30 time limit from when the last person crossed the start and clock time hadn’t even gotten to 3:30. John has a photo of them taking the clock down with the clock saying 3:29. This was completely inexcusable!!!

Post Race. There were no medals at the finish. Didn’t even see a medical tent. We had to walk back to the now removed section of fence (where we could help ourselves to a bottle of water) and make our way back across the field almost to the track to pick up our medal from someone that was standing at a table handing them out. There were no signs or anyone to tell you where to go. John had to ask another racer that was wearing their medal where they got it from. Anyone could have just walked up & gotten a medal. Not sure if they were even checking to see if you were wearing a bib. Then walked over to the food tent which was not spectacular but I guess adequate. Bagels, big muffins, granola bars, oranges & bananas. No powerade or salty snacks.

We did get to meet Maria's (Wofiedoodles) husband & Angie (Pungodingy) pre-race & got to wave to them/cheer them on, on the 2 out & backs. We saw Angie again post race and also Katie (K80K). We also had someone yell go Wish to Lily & I on one of the out & backs that wasn’t wearing a Wish shirt. Now know that was Megan (Poppinspal).

Karen: From what I heard there was Gatorade on course at at least 2 water stations but it was gone before even the mid-pack got there. The friends I know that got some finished around 2:15.

Sorry to hear the 13.1 Marathon Boston race failed to deliver. I was curious how the 13.1 events were going; this is the first report that I hear from any of the events. Hopefully they'll improve their future events; having enough cups seems like a pretty simple task to accomplish :confused3

I have to say this report doesn't make me want to do an 13.1 events. With the RnR series being so well run I'll stick with those for now.

Thanks for the info everyone and sorry you guys had to learn the hard way.

My dh said he would not disagree with any of the comments made. He found the hills to be challenging, and he thought the organization could have certainly been better. He was fortunate in that he was carrying his own Gatorade, he said it was clearly needed. He finished in 2:08, which he considered good based on the conditions he wasn't used to -- i.e. the extremely steep terrain.

He also could not leave for over an hour after he was done, because of the road closures. I think this is understandable, but again, no notification for runners.

This is why I tend to be afraid to do any events outside of WDW -- I'm just afraid I won't have the support I need, and then I'll be miserable. I need to branch out, but I'm such a chicken!

Don't be afraid, they aren't all that bad. Any of the Rock N Roll events are really good and there are a lot of really good races out there. If you find one in a city you like or that looks good check marathon guide to read the reviews or come here and see if anyone has run it. There is a good chance someone here has at least heard about any of the races.

I'd hate for you to think they are all poorly organized like this one seems to be because so many are not.

Of course if you use it as justification to do the Disney events there is nothing wrong with that either.

Here is the report I posted on my website. I think you will see a lot of similarities between my experience and Karen's because we were pretty close to each other throughout most of the race. I tried to catch her and Lily, but the hills wouldn't let it happen.

I was very excited for my first oppurtunity to do a 13.1 Series race. After reading about Chris' good experience at Atlanta I was hopefull that even though this was an inaugural race that it had the potential to be well organized since it was part of the same race season. Boy were my hopes shattered...quickly.

The packet pick-up was held at a City Sports and we did get coupons for some shopping. The bibs were nice and had our D-tags attached. However the event shirt did not have the event name on it. It was lime green and was a race series shirt. They did however have a tech shirt for sale, exactly like they event shirt, only a red color that had the event name on it.

We arrive at Dunkin Brands to use their parking lot and hop on the shuttle to go to the start. The port-a-potty count was good. We ended up going through the line 3 times before the start without much trouble. We walked our way over to the start and lined up in our appropriate "corrals", Lauren and Jill heading to the front and myself and Ann Marie, with our goal being to just finish, lining up just in front of 14 min miles. We knew there was a rumor that there was hills, afterall we were running in an area called the Blue Hills Reservation, so we decided to keep up a 2:1 interval as long as we could and walk up the hills when we needed to so that we could run back down them.

The race started and it took us about 5 minutes to cross over the start line. We started running our 2:1 but unfortunately it did not last us long. In my recent race history I have run A LOT of hilly races. I have to say...this was the worst one yet. I didn't feel like we ever hit a point where it was level or even close to rolling hills. I will admit I might be blinded by the bad spots, but there were two out-and-backs with very steep hills. One was 1 mile out and the other over 1.5 miles out. It was just more than I would have expected from a race that didn't have an published elevation chart. Unfortunately they took control of the race for myself and Ann Marie - one of us overtrained and the other under.

Things went well through water stop number 1. By the time we reached number 2, which was on the out-and-back they were out of Gatorade and they were out of cups. It was on this stretch that we saw a guy in a total daze miss the turn around and run right into the gate marking in the end of the route. We helped him up and were concerned as we watched him run away from us, but he insisted he was okay. The next few water stops had the same "no cups" story.

During the second out and back we saw the "majestic views of Boston". At the top of the highest hill there was a break in the trees and you could see Boston. This was the only spot...I think they called it views because it was an out-and-back so we passed the same view twice. :theeye: As we turned around during the second out-and-back the band had stopped playing. When asked why they had stopped we were told that we were "too slow" for them to play for us. :cryeyesout:

As we made our way to the last few water stops we did start seeing cups. I have a feeling that there was a grocery store very happy near by as the race staff ran in and cleared them out of cups. Towards the end they actually had a guy with a golf cart riding up and down the street with a golf cart and cases of water throwing them to the runners along the course. It was hear that a cup drove up behind us and demanded everyone move from the right hand side to the left hand sidewalk, that was already crowded by runners that had finished the race and were making their way back to their cars. Ann Marie and I moved over and then noticed that the couple in front of us moved back to the right so we followed them realizing the finish line was right there. At this point we still hadn't ever seen any Gatorade.

We ran towards the finish line and the confusion set in. I tried to keep running towards a finish line that was coming down. I was looking for the timing mats for our D-tags and they weren't there. There was a guy with a computer entering our numbers as we crossed the "finish line". I know my time was not put in just as I finished because the guy entering the number was having trouble reading it and had to stop me. I was very upset knowing that the clock did not yet read the 3:30 finish time and the mats were gone and the finish line was already coming up.

We heard Lauren and Jill calling our names and I just walked over shaking my head in frustration. They asked us to follow them saying they had our finisher's medals. We followed along the wall till we met up with them and Lauren then presented Ann Marie with her medal and Jill with mine. They, being the awesome friends that they were, made sure they got us medals because the woman at the finish line wasn't sure if they really had enough for the number of runners on the course. We then headed over to the food area, which was well stocked, and I got an slopping caramel apple muffin to help sooth my wounds. I got messy but it was REALLY good.

We ran into Paul on our way out and then headed to the shuttles. The sign said "Parking Lot Shuttles" but we were told they weren't the parking lot shuttles they were the CCFA shuttles. We decided to not even try to look for them and instead walked back to the parking lot to head home.

One thing I can say about this race is that there were plenty of port-a-potties. Ann Marie had a great theory about the port-a-potties. This race benefitted the Chrones and Colitis Foundation of America and Chrones. We think that maybe the foundation encouraged the race to have a plethora of port-a-potties on course to support their runners. Also the bling was decent. However it was the same bling as I have seen for previous 13.1 series events only it had a Boston themed lanyard.

I truly hope this race improves from the feedback they have been recieving. It has potential. However this year they get a big FAIL! I wish them luck in the future as I will not be attempting another 13.1 series race in the near future.

I can understand your fear Maria, but honestly this kind of the experience is the exception, no the rule. Most races are NOT like this. In fact this was my 22nd Half and my 75th race overall and I have NEVER had an experience even close to this one. I agree with FireDancer, if you do an non-inaugural Rock 'n' Roll race they are very well run. Even then the inaugural ones will have a couple issues, but nothing like what I experienced this past weekend. I think the exception would be the Inaugural Philly Rock 'n' Roll this year becuase it is just rebranding of an existing race, which is VERY well run.

My dh has been talking about doing the RocknRoll in Phoenix. Maybe we will investigate that further...I think it must be fairly flat?

I know I shouldn't be such a wimp. My first (and to date only) Half races have been at WDW -- I've done it 3 times, and I'm so comfortable now, it's kind of easy to just keep going back...but I know I should branch out.

Thanks for all the encouragement!

I have several friends that never miss RnR Pheonix. It is on my list of races I would love to run one day.

So my fabulous finish line photos are now posted. Note the fact that I am standing there trying to figure out why the guy was grabbing me trying to get my number as there is a guy walking away with the clock with 3:28 on it. http://www.asiorders.com/view_user_event.asp?EVENTID=63295&BIB=2787&S=230&PWD=

If the whole situation wasn't so aggravating the finish line photos would be pretty funny. :confused3 Mine show the clock time 3:27:52/53/54 the mats all disconnected & half of them already taken away and Lily & I running around the section of fence they dragged in front of us, to get to the finish line. http://www.asiorders.com/view_user_event.asp?EVENTID=63295&BIB=2864&S=230&PWD=

ugh, these race reports make the race seem like it was a complete disaster! i was debating about doing this one, but at the end i decided to hold out for when i can find time to do the boston half put on the baa in the fall at some point in my racing future. good to know to avoid 13.1 races, but sorry you all had to have a bad experience!

Wow Karen, between your photos and mine quite a story is being told.

I must say that I still have that feeling of being used and abused and still cannot bring myself to even think about the mess. I am certainly happy that we had such fun visiting with friends and playing with WISH Team members. THIS is what the weekend was all about anyway. It really was nice to get to see WISHers at this event. I'm sorry that it was not more of a pleasant experience.

There is little I can add. It still greatly upsets me that this happened. Their FB page is certainly a battle ground right now. I thought the front participants would feel little effect with what happened to us at the back. Seems they have their own issues. Parking in the lot and having to wait until the end of the event without being told of this earlier is another inexcusable problem. It would have been easy enough to add one sentence to the Web info "For those parking in this lot you will be required to remain for the ENTIRE event. And, that would be AFTER Lily, Karen and several other back of the pack people crossed. Go cheer them as they do so!" Ya know.

Anyway, there were promises via statements on the Web and therefore basic expectations that were not met and not any logical thought about the seriousness of staging an event. It's like all of the participants had no value except for the dollars spent to the event via registration. I even support Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and was excited to run one of these events. Sad and upsetting on so many levels.
