12 days, a 5 and 1-year-old, kid's races, AKL Kidani... and 6,735 pics! (on day 4!)

Now Groucho....were you in the Blue corner (with 57,100) or the Red corner (with 191,700)? :scratchin

That shot of Jack concentrating on taking a picture is just gorgeous. I bet he's gonna be so embarassed on his 21st birthday when you pull it out. Are his shots as good as yours?

And I think I see a shot that I recognise from that thread for Pea n Me....BUT it just might be me....:rolleyes1

Those Mr and Ms G Raffe sure look fantastic. Must have been great to have that view.

ps. *sigh* No Starring Roles food porn?????
Thanks! Jack loves his camera (a hand-me-down from Mrs Groucho); unfortunately it developed a few black spots on the rear LCD during the trip. It still works fine but he's uninspired because they don't look right on the LCD, which is mostly where he looks at the pics. He does take some interesting ones...

Nothing good from Starring Rolls. I don't think I even took any... I think I was busy enough feeding Leila bananas and yogurt and stuffing food in my own mouth - I was hungry by that point! There are some more bakery photos coming up, though...

I'm loving your TR! What wonderful pictures. I'll look forward to following along.

The one thing I regret about my trip is that I had purchased an inexpensive waterproof point and shoot that could not take beautiful photos. It was good not to be anxious about the equipment, but I do feel photograph envy!
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the report so far. Waterproof would be fine... I don't have a proper submersible camera, maybe one of these days!

Gorgeous photos! Seriously, they are breathtaking!

We are taking DD5 and DD1 in a few weeks! It's fun to see someone with the kids that age range.

Love the photo of Jack concentrating on taking his photo! Like father, like son?

Wow - it's been a week and a half since the last update. I've really been slacking off!

Picking up from the last update... Mrs and Leila were taking a nap, and Jack and I put on our swimsuits and took off for the water play area, or "Uwanja Camp" as Disney calls it. Geographically, we were quite close to it, but had to walk all the way to the lobby, outside, then back in the same direction a bit to get to it. (The parking lot prevented direct walking to it.) Of course, as soon as we got there, we had to make another bathroom stop; this time in the locker area at the "Survival of the Fittest" exercise area. I had to take a quick picture of the towel return basket - great theming as usual!

We then made the short walk down the stairs, past the pool slide, to the water play area. I had remembered seeing it in drawings when they were first talking about Kidani Village but hadn't looked more closely since then, but I remember that it looked very nice. I was not disappointed! It's terrific, with lots of room to run around and things to do. At one end is more of a playground, with a rope bridge...

In the middle is the big leaky water tower...

...and the other side is a rock wall with a slide and some water cannons.

Since it was still not super warm and was in the afternoon in the middle of the week, we pretty much had the place to ourselves.

Near the rock wall were a series of buckets and such... there was a ton of stuff to keep us busy!

The spitting snakes had movable nozzles; here is Jack trying to spray me!

After a while, we headed into the main pool, which had a bunch of inflated ball-shaped jungle animal pool toys that we had fun with. There was a children's slide that Jack did a few times and he even did the big slide once. Unfortunately, he's not as good of a swimmer as he should be so I had to keep a close eye on him... (he starts swim lessons again tomorrow night! :) )

It was getting late (and cold!) so Mrs Groucho finally woke up Leila and they came down to join us. Leila wasn't so sure but she enjoyed this one spot which had warm water circulating.

A look up at the lights showed us that on top of everything else, it was starting to rain, too!

Jack and I took one final run through before we headed back.

The masks here would spray out mist occasionally when you walked by. We also noticed a tiny frog halfway up the side of one of the columns here but I wasn't able to get a decent photo.

We were all getting pretty chilly (and hungry), so we went back to our room and threw clothes on, then went to Downtown Disney.

It's hard to go wrong with Earl of Sandwich for a quick bite. The place is always packed, which is not surprising as the sandwiches are great and they are relatively cheap, compared to other options. I had to get the same sandwich as I'd gotten on our last trip... the holiday turkey sandwich, with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc... it sounds weird but is very good!

Our next stop was Once Upon a Toy, where Jack played with the Mr Potato Heads...

...and Leila played with some stuffed animals.

Next stop was Tren-D, which is not particularly stroller-friendly, but full of unusual details.

At this point, we just happened to find ourselves at Ghiradelli's...

The kids ate a little bit but neither one is a big ice cream eater. It would be nice if Ghiradelli offered some smaller sized options. I like sundaes but they're so big that a good amount of it goes to waste. (It didn't help that they gave me two scoops vanilla and one of strawberry, when I asked for two of strawberry and one of vanilla!)

We stopped into World of Disney, and soon after, both kids were sound asleep in the stroller...

We wandered and just got a couple small things and took a few photos. The 40th Anniversary merchandise was beginning to appear, and I liked some of the designs but there was no combination of design and product that appealed to me enough to buy it. Since then, they started selling a big jigsaw puzzle - my boss is down there now and has instructions to pick one up for me. :)

We made our way back to the bus stop and had to do the usual task of handling sleeping kids and a stroller... it would really be helpful to have a sherpa or nanny or something! I don't know how people with more than two kids do it!

Believe it or not, the day was still not over for me... more pictures in the next installment! Thanks for reading and thanks for your patience!

WOW~~~

I cannot believe I missed this GEM of a trip report!! I am so glad I am subbing now!!! Your pics are UNBELIEVABLE!! I was just there three weeks ago and I literally said out loud, to myself, "that looks better than being there in person!!!" Not meaning that I would rather look than be but what an amazing substitute!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!

I also have a toddler, she is about 21 months now...so I love reading TR's with babies the same age!! (As you see from my siggy we actually have 4 so I am one of those with more than 2....) :lmao: Not to mention we drove from Iowa the last time we went :upsidedow

I love Kidani...I did a split stay there, at VWL and the Grand Floridian and but have never been during the holiday decoration time....I teach so it's quite hard to go at that time of year for me.

I am so thankful that I stumbled upon this wonderful piece of art, fantasy and family! Thank you!

I had never given AKL a decent look for accommodation options. Looks like I'll be revising my opinion for the next trip!

WOW! Those shots of Jack in the pool area are great! And I love your close-ups of merchandise (and the food! :lovestruc).

Waiting for the next installment!

AKL is really nice - but it is a ways away from everything except, of course, Animal Kingdom. We generally had very good luck with busses but you can generally figure about half an hour to get to just about anywhere.

I'll quickly throw up some more photos here to finish up day 4. It was late when we got back to our room, but I really wanted to get some night shots of the hotel with the Christmas decorations up, so I grabbed the tripod and spent a couple hours or so taking photos, finishing up at about 1:40am. I was exhausted but it was fun seeing everything so still and quiet.

Here's the entrance to the lobby.

This is inbetween the two automatic doors. Very dark, tranquil, soothing...

In the lobby just behind the TV, facing the savannah.

Same location, looking back at the entrance. The check-in is on the right. The lobby at Kidani is much more intimate than the one at Jambo, I think I prefer its more subtle charms. Jambo is amazing but almost an over-the-top spectacle.

Here's the main Christmas tree.

There's a library just off the lobby...

Back in the lobby, here's the view of the savanna. There are stairs going down right in front of this location, with doors leading outside and the restaurant Sanaa on the right.

Here's a favorite shot, this is looking back at the lobby from the savanna. A 30-second exposure gives you nice ethereal clouds.

By now, it was time to head back, but I took a few quick photos of some of the sconces along the wall.

That finally finishes day 4... day 5 begins with yet more AKL, this time Jambo House, then on to Animal Kingdom!

Really lovely shots Groucho. I love the twinkles on the lights. I'm really going to have to scheme to work out how I can convince DH to go to WDW for Christmas.

I love that you had the time to set up the tripod (at least I'm assuming that you set it up for the long exposures) with no one around. Did any of the CM on duty give you the evil eye or ask any questions?

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks again! I've never had anyone - cast member or otherwise - give me a hard time about using the tripod. The night I was taking the AKL photos, it was pretty much me and a couple CMs who were at check-in, and they actually were taking a couple photos also! I try to be considerate of others with the tripod, but in this case, it was pretty much abandoned so I didn't mind setting up the tripod in what would normally be high-traffic areas - including the driveway right in front of the main entrance!

Now then... another update to "the world's slowest trip report"! :)

Now, staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge as we were, it was pretty much a given that we'd have to eat at Boma at some point. Well, at the beginning of day 5, we decided that it was time! If you've never eaten at Boma... well, you're missing out. Yes, it's another great buffet at Disney! They also have a unique juice called "frunch" which is quite delicious. I highly recommend checking it out. We had a great breakfast, and interestingly enough, our waiter hailed from our home town, and had in fact put a deposit down on a house less than a mile away from ours, but was not able to sell his house in Orlando.

After breakfast, we briefly checked out some of the Christmas and other details in the AKL Jambo House.

We then made the shortest bus ride of the trip, from AKL to the front gates of Animal Kingdom. If only all bus rides could be so short! As we made our way in, the person manning our entry gate also was from our home town; he was there on the college program. I guess it really is a small world, after all!

We checked the times guide and had enough time to make the next Festival of the Lion King show, with a little time to look at the animals on Discovery Island along the way.

Jack was very amused by the large fuzzy head on this duck...

We made our way to Camp Minnie-Mickey, stowed the stroller, and headed into the show, sitting down as they were beginning assigning the animal sections. I usually enjoy getting a photo of the animals opposite us as they make their sounds...

I decided to mainly concentrate on watching the show rather than taking photos. I did get a few of the characters on the floats, but somehow those shots rarely turn out to be very interesting. What is interesting is that old challenger-of-photographers, the firedancer... I was fairly happy with the photos I got of his this time, especially this one. I had noticed a brief flame in his "area" and snapped a quick shot, but I didn't expect it to turn out quite like this! I hope his insurance is paid up, that looks dangerous! :rotfl2:

One thing that I hadn't noticed before was that there were a few "character" Christmas trees in the Camp Minnie-Mickey area. A Nemo one, a Pluto one, a Chip & Dale one, etc, each with appropriate decorations.

Next stop was It's Tough To Be a Bug. A little scary for little Leila, but Jack does pretty well in it. I know to lean forward during the "stinging" scene, but the crawling-bugs effect at the end under your butt is great; hearing everyone's reaction is, by itself, worth the visit.

Next, we went to Dinoland, USA. Jack had ridden Dinosaur last trip but was a little scared and decided that he didn't want to ride it this time. We split up so that I could ride it solo, while the rest of the family went to The Boneyard - the "dig site" playground. Well, come to find out, the ride just shut down, so I quickly zipped over to Expedition Everest and snuck in a quick ride from the single rider line. I was not surprised to see that the yeti was still broken... let's hope that they do a rehab on this ride one of these days and get the yeti working again, more reliably this time. It's too great of an effect to waste just sitting there under a strobe light!

I head back to The Boneyard to catch up with the others. Unsurprisingly, everyone has congregated at the dig site area...

We were getting hungry and a little cranky at that point, so after a potty break, we decided to eat somewhere that we'd never been before... Restaurantosaurus!

I'll pick up there in the next installment... as always, thanks for reading!

Joining in :cool1: What a wonderful TR, your photos are amazing :thumbsup2. I hope that my photos will turn out even half as good as yours. Can't wait for more updates.

I missed an installment!

You might need to go post that in that thread for Pea n Me.....this is way BEHIND the intent of that thread; but I'm sure everyone just burn to see this there!

Waiting for the next installment...irrespective of how slowly it comes. :thumbsup2
