Our latest trip is complete and now I'm beginning the hard part - going through my all my photos! I easily beat all previous trips thanks in part to our longest stay yet and an extremely fast new camera.

The cast: me, Mrs Groucho, Jack (5 years old and a veteran of WDW, this being his seventh trip, not counting a DL trip), and Leila (19 months, this is her third trip.) Disney World is Jack's favorite place in the world and he knows many of the attraction songs by heart, and in particular loves Grim Grinning Ghosts yet has recently become terrified of the image of Master Gracey turning into a skeleton in the first room. Leila started going nuts for Mickey Mouse in the past few months and happily says "Mow mow!" when she sees him. She has since dubbed Donald "duck duck" and Pluto "dog dog". She traditionally has not traveled well and I was not looking forward to another noisy plane ride with her.

The trip: we left Rochester on January 1st and returned on the 12th. We stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Kidani Village. I had Bay Lake Towers on waitlist but I knew it was a longshot for such a long block to free up at once. We've moved between rooms on a trip but always at the same resort; I wasn't sure that I wanted to deal with actually switching resorts so it was Kidani for the whole time.

The plan: to take it pretty easy and have fun. Mrs Groucho, after taking up running during the summer, was signed up for the 5k. We also signed the kids up for the kid's races - 100 meters for Leila and 200 for Jack.

...and so the trip began. My father drove us all to the airport, and we made our way through security... to find that we were facing a hour delay. Apparently our Airtran plane was sitting in Atlanta waiting for crew. (I originally had JetBlue booked, but a couple months ago, they suddenly stopped doing nonstops between Rochester and Orlando, leaving Airtran the only option if you didn't want a layover.) Fortunately, the Rochester airport has a pretty nice kid's play area near our gate, which quickly filled up with familes waiting to go to Disney.

The delays kept coming... two hours... three hours... I spent some time on our laptop checking Airtran's site for the latest estimates, and also tracked the flight from Atlanta, which was being updated more quickly than the Rochester one. This was cutting into my plan to head for the parks when we arrived to see the Osborne lights!

We've always had pretty good luck traveling so this was pretty frustrating for us - especially as the weather was clear and relatively warm! We've been on the plane when it's getting deiced before and those delays were nothing, relatively speaking. Finally, our plane arrived and we hopped onboard, about four hours late. The crew seemed to have a good attitude about everything, with some guilt about the delay and various attempts at humor. (Part of the preflight safety spiel: "You'll have to turn off your Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, dingleberries, snozberries, and any other kind of berries that you have!")

The long delays also screwed up our plans for timing Leila's nap. Fortunately, she played along nicely and fell asleep around the time that we took off, and slept for a while and was pretty well-behaved the rest of the time. Meanwhile, Jack and I had a good time looking out the window at the sunset, then he played his Leapster until the batteries died.

We landed safely and began the long taxi to our gate... only to be told that there were no gates free and that it might be 15 minutes or so until one is available. Well, 45 minutes later, we finally start moving again...

We finally disembark and head towards the Magical Express location. We hopped on a bus and naturally, our stop was last... finally, at about 10:30, we made it to Kidani Villages and got checked in. Our late arrival also meant that all the nearby rooms were already booked up, so our room was a good 4-5 minute walk from the lobby. The late hour also killed any plans to head to a park that evening. Fortunately, the hotel was quite beautiful, with a much more intimate feel than Jambo House, and with African artwork everywhere.

We made it to our room and the first thing I did was head to the balcony, and we were not disappointed!

Everyone else crashed and I stayed up until 1am or so to see if our luggage might arrive. It never did, so I went to bed. I called in the morning and they knew us immediately ("are you so-and-so or so-and-so?") and delivered the luggage right away. Apparently it didn't make it to the resort until 4am or so... :crazy2:

That's the beginnings of our trip... next stop, Chef Mickey's!

well you made it!! seems like traveling is just a pain these days...
I love love the giraffes out side your balcony!! thats just awesome!

Nice that the kids handled the plane delays nicely. 4am for luggage? WOW! Great room you got.

I'm starting to think that 3 hour luggage delivery is just a dream any more. We've done Magical Express 4 times. The first 2 times were great.... but in 09 and then again in 2010.....not so much.

Great shot of the giraffes in the dark. You deserved that after a trying day of travel!

I can't believe how big the kids got since the last trip...it's nuts! Looking forward to seeing more and keeping my fingers crossed that we don't face any 4 hour delays for our flight in three weeks!!!

Your kids are adorable! Sorry about the delays to your flight...but that view with Mr G Raffe and family is to die for.

Marking my spot for the rest of the 6,726 pictures...popcorn::

Best of luck... those delays were a real bummer. The big fear was that they'd just cancel the flight - which may have sent us straight into the car to start driving! And it's funny how those kids keeping getting bigger, isn't it? :teeth: Jack kept a journal through this trip (though we usually forgot to have him write in it) and Leila beginning to talk... they are definitely getting big fast!

:) I won't post quite that many - but I do have a lot!

Continuing on... Bell Services brought up our luggage quickly and after throwing on some clean clothes, we made out way out to catch a reservation at Chef Mickey's. The best way to get there from other resorts, IMHO, is the bus to Magic Kingdom, then the resort monorail.

Here's one of the only shots of Leila wearing Jack's old monkey leash... attempts to use it on her were usually met with meltdowns, since she's not really used it before so was not used to it at all. We quickly switched back to the stroller, handholding, and Mrs Groucho's beloved Ergo baby carrier. Here she is blocking a shot I was trying to get, but that's OK!

...and here's what I was going for.

We got there just about on time for our reservation, and I passed the time waiting for a table taking a few more photos.

We got our table and right away got a visit from Goofy.

2011WDWfam-013.jpg

We took turns heading up. Disney really knows how to do buffets... this is a great way to start the trip; I've been alternating between this and Crystal Palace for first-morning breakfasts for several trips now. We all ate tons; I especially loved the potato-bacon dish, which I didn't remember from previous visits.

Here's a few more character photos... unfortunately, Donald never made it over to our table.

Jack really knows how to make a face for the camera!

Experimenting...

2011WDWfam-023.jpg

After breakfast, we checked out the Contemporary's gingerbread house and tree briefly.

We then took the monorail to the Grand Floridian to check out their legendary gingerbread house.

That's enough for one post... next up, more GF photos and on to the Magic Kingdom!

Groucho - your pictures are stunning! I love the use of the fisheye and your perspective is just brilliant.

Between your TR and WDWFigment's....I've died and gone to heaven!

Wow, the view from your balcony was amazing! Looking forward to hearing about the rest of your trip :)

Thanks! There's lots more fisheyes to come. :thumbsup2

A few more Grand Floridian shots to finish up that visit...

On our way out, we happened upon a photo shoot of a bride.

Note the Cinderella coach pattern in the carpet on the grand staircase.

We decided to move along and make our way to the Magic Kingdom. We got back on the monorail, dusted off our annual passes, and made our way in. First stop was the barber shop for Leila's first haircut. There was a decent-length line and a number of people had appointments - which was not an option on earlier trips. After a few minutes, we decided to try again another day.

Our usual strategy is to go left into Adventureland, but just for a change, we started in Tomorrowland this time. First stop was the PeopleMover (or Tomorrowland Transit Authority), which Mrs Groucho calls her favorite ride, only half-jokingly!

Apparently, there's a hidden Mickey on the belt buckle here, but I didn't know at the time and it's not visible in this shot.

Space Mountain had a long wait, so we decided that we should probably make it over to Splash Mountain, which would be closing after the next day for a rehab. On the way, we just had to stop into my favorite ride, the Haunted Mansion. Now, Jack loves it and loves listening to the audio of a ride-through of it, but he's terrified of the first room, with Mr Gracey changing into a skeleton. (His description of it is great though, as it usually consists of him holding his arm like Napoleon!) We talked him into it, and this gave me my first chance to try the new camera on a dark ride.

I would write more but that's as far as I've gotten in going through my photos. :) More soon!

I feel like I'm getting vertigo just looking at this. Very nice take on the floor, you definitely managed to make it more interesting than most shots!

Seeing your DD wearing Jack's monkey leash thing makes me nostalgic for your other TRs. It's probably weird that I don't know your kids at all and I'm getting that nostalgic "Jack's all grown up" feeling from your pics. Either that, or your photos really do tell the story of your vacation so well that I feel like I've tagged along the past few years. That probably sounds a lot better and a whole lot more sane, so let's stick with that. :thumbsup2

I love your pictures! They are so pretty  I am subscribing.
Thanks! :)

The floor shot looks a little weird because I rotated it 180'. :teeth: I was looking at the floor and decided that might make an interesting shot!

We had planned on getting Leila used to the leash, but never got much past talking about it. She would wear it but at soon as we held her back with it, she'd flip out. Leila flipping out is not much fun for anyone ;) so thank goodness that she started holding out hands! So, the leash will probably be retired. Jack is certainly growing up fast - he's already starting to complain about going to school every day and he's only in kindergarten. :lmao:

Back to the TR...

On the Haunted Mansion, we had a short shot halfway through the attic...

We next made our way to Splash Mountain. Since, as I mentioned, it was closing for rehab and this was our only day to ride it, we got our child swap ticket and Jack and I got into the standby line, which was about an hour.

2011WDWfam-027.jpg

Since it was going to be my only ride, I decided to wait for a front row. Jack loves the ride, and we managed to not get too wet - even managing to just miss the big spray near the beginning.

While Mrs Groucho and Jack rode it, lucky me got to go change Leila's diaper, then waited by the restroom near Pirates, which is a fairly nice, quiet area.

2011WDWfam-030.jpg

When they were done, we hopped on Pirates. (This first shot is focused on the foreground; a danger when using multiple focus points as I usually do on the dark rides; but these are my first shots after using a new way to measure the white balance manually and I'm fairly pleased with the results.)

PotC has one of the best gift shops just because they have so much stuff. For whatever reason, PotC has the coolest shirts/jackets/etc.

That gets me current on photos... now to go work on getting more ready. :thumbsup2

Splash Mountain is my all time favorite ride. I love the pics you posted. I felt like I was on the ride with you! My family is returning in March, but I will be 5 1/2 months pregnant & have my 20 month old along too. Sadly, no Splash Mountain for me. At least I can live through your pics now.:goodvibes

I'm loving your trip report.. your pictures are amazing and your kids are adorable

Thank you, skitt, patches07, and darthspud!

Mrs Groucho can relate; she was pregnant for a few of our trips. Plus our trips have overlapped the usual January rehab, too. The difference is that she's terrified of heights and usually doesn't like to do the ride. :)

Back to TR...
One thing I forgot to mention about our first night. One thing that's really handy about the DVC rooms is the kitchen (or mini-kitchen in the studios, like we had)... when we arrived the first night, we were able to stop into the little store on-site (just before they closed!) and pick up a loaf of bread and some peanut butter and jelly. These proved to be quite handy for the trip!

Where was I... ah yes, in the Pirates gift shop! It's easy to miss the zombies here and there...

Of course, Jack likes playing with the swords and such.

2011WDWfam-035.jpg

I realize that I got the sequence a little bit off. At this point, Mrs Groucho and Jack hadn't ridden Splash yet. We were actually stopping to get a late lunch at this point and ended up in Pecos Bill, although I was curious to try some good-looking chicken sandwiches from the Golden Oak Outpost (the little walk-up place where there used to be a McDonalds fry cart.) Now, I'd had mixed feelings about the burgers before so I got a chicken Caesar salad, which was quite good. I did notice, looking at other diners, that the burgers looked a bit different... I didn't know yet that they had just introduced new ones!

Anyway, now that everyone was feeling fuller, we went back towards Splash Mountain so that Mrs Groucho and Jack could ride.

Leila and I just hung around and I took some photos of others getting soaked.

One more thing I'd forgotten is that we had grabbed Space Mountain fastpasses, as Jack decided that he wanted to try it. After they finished on Splash, we made our way there. On the way, we saw some familiar-looking characters on the sleigh in front of the Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe... hmm!

We continued on and found a crowd in the hub in front of the castle. I was hoping to see the castle "dreamlights" lighting, and asked a cast member. Unfortunately, despite them supposedly being on until the 3rd, they would not be turned on! So, we never got to see them at all... very disappointing. I haven't been there since they've been installed. I guess I'll have to wait a while to see them in person.

Well, the crowd was there to see Dream Along with Mickey. Normally, I would just skip it, but since we were right there...

Some of the facial appliances don't look so good when seen a little closer, especially Hook's chin...

This shot is heavily cropped, but I thought it was funny how Mickey looks here. Very cool and with a bit of an "I'm the man" attitude!

Aww!

We continued on to Space Mountain and made our way through the fastpass line. Jack was a little bummed that he didn't get to play the video game! I'm glad that when they put them in, they didn't completely get rid of the old queue elements...

When it was our turn to board, Jack had some nervousness as he didn't realize that you don't sit side by side, so he wouldn't be next to me. I had him sit in front and I kept my hand on his shoulder but he was still a bit nervous.

He made it through fine, though he was a bit scared when all was said and done. He did not want to go on again, though, so we didn't use the child swap pass we got, and Mrs Groucho never did get a chance to ride it this trip.

To be continued...

Great shots as usual! I love your HM and PoTC pictures. Manually setting the white balance sure worked well!

That new camera must be watersealed tight! Fabulous ones on Splash.

Thanks! The white balance was set afterwards; I shoot in Raw mode so there's no need to set it ahead of time. I did take a reading of WB while on the rides, and that's what I used. As for weathersealing - yes, with a weathersealed lens, the Pentax sealed models can stand up to just about anything!

When I left off, Jack and I had just finished riding Space Mountain...

We hung out in the arcade (or Tomorrowland Light and Power Co if you want to be thorough!) while trying to contact Mrs Groucho... as it turns out, she had gone on the PeopleMover again, so we had a few minutes to kill.

Once they were finished on PeopleMover, we made our way to the Ticket & Transportation Center then took a bus to Hollywood Studios and made our way straight to the Orborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights.

Jack loved the snow coming down...

2011WDWfam-046.jpg

I processed this shot to make the snow a bit easier to see.

2011WDWfam-047.jpg

Now, fisheye photos are such an obvious way to shout the Dancing Lights, so I tried a couple other experiments... the first is one shot at F1.2, the second is one shot with a LensBaby, which for those who don't know, is a rather funky lens that lens you move around the spot that is in focus, while everything else blurs away from it. Poor description but you'll know when you see it. :)

I also took some video with the fisheye and with the LensBaby; I may post them on YouTube at some point.

By now, everyone was getting a bit tired - plus the park had closed 30 minutes ago! They kept running the lights, though, but it time to get moving before we were "swept" out of the park. We made our way to our bus (we had great luck with buses this trip, with usually very short waits) and went back to the hotel.

Dinner was more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, then everyone went to bed... except me! This was the only really late night for MK (open until 1am), so I grabbed my gear and went back out for some solo fun. :thumbsup2
