12/24/08 Christmas Cruise on the Wonder

He had three days in Alaska, but it ended up snowing an inch while he was there so he didn't get out. He'll have a couple days to venture out in Italy though. I know he's going to pick up my favorite wine for me while he's there ... it's a muscato dessert wine ... so sweet. Only kind I really have found that I like and we can only get it in Italy!

Have you tried finding it here? I know places that will get it if you ask for it. Try these others: Ice Wine (even sweeter...the sweetest you will EVER have), also try a good Reisling that is either an Auslese or Beerenauslese. If you really like the sweet stuff. Or a late harvest Reisling. I got into drinking wines by starting with this stuff. Couldn't handle the oaky, bold, high tannin, or dry stuff.

Actually took that picture with my Blackberry. iPhone pics are good too.

As for my dream....:cloud9: ....a Canon EOS 40D. I get so excited just thinking about it I could...

:rotfl2: Thanks for sharing!

Guess I should try to get some sleep. I never sleep good when I know Dale's is on his way home. Too excited to sleep. Gee, where have I heard that before?:lmao:

Nice chatting with you both. Sweet dreams ladies. (even if they are of our dream cameras)

I'll check in tomorrow morning, before he gets home. Nitey Nite:cloud9:

Guess I'm just not a wine person. The only thing I like is the sparkling wines. Like Asti Spumanti. We always end up spending a ton of $$ for something dry or just plain nasty tasting. We gave up a long time ago.

Next week we're heading down to Savannah for a week of training. That means training for him ... swim time for me and the kids!

Love Savannah! I assume if you are going swimming that you are going to Tybee Island. If so, I highly recommend eating breakfast at the Breakfast Club. It doesnt look like much but the food is divine. :worship:

Lady and Sons will be difficult to get into so go to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House or head out (on the way to Tybee) to Uncle Bubba's for seafood. If Uncle Bubba's is on a wait, go sit at the bar as there is nobody there usually.

For something different, go to Starfish Cafe. It is a restaurant that teaches homeless people how to cook professionally.

I can give you some non-food suggestions, too.

If you like sparkling wine try a Prosecco. They are Italian and most brands are $10 or less. :thumbsup2

Wow, I wanna go to Savanna too. I sure could go for some fresh seafood.::yes::
I think that is amazing that the restaurant teaches them to cook. You don't find many places that will go that exrtra mile. Hats off to them.:thumbsup2

Adrianna,I just want to let you know I am thinking of you and your son this morning. Hope all goes well, and your little guy recovers quickly.

We have tried to find it here and so far no luck! Be very interested in hearing about those sites! I will try those others that you suggested too. Thanks!

Wow ... thanks for the suggestions! We go to Savannah every year for training, so I'm always on the lookout for some new places to eat. I managed to get into Lady and Sons last year with my kids. Kenny didn't get to go because I could only manage a brunch seating and he was in class. The food was GREAT and the kids loved it. Not really up to trying to do it again though since we aren't staying right downtown this time. We're going to be out by the airport this time. That's where the training actually is. Love to hear some more of your ideas!

Me either. I had given up as well. There is a place in the Fort Worth Stockyards that only sells Texas wine. They allow samples and will choose wines for you based on what you like and dislike. So I paid my $3 told her I prefer sweet and didn't like anything dry, oaky, or too bold. She pointed me to the Reislings and Gewurtztraminer. And I agree with Andy on the Prosecco. Most often they are better tasting, more available, and cheaper.

Tell me the name of it and I will see if it is available down here. There are lots of good wine shops here. Always ask the person you go to if they can get it in as well. I have done that several times. If they don't, well, they should be reported. It's a crime. Just kidding.

I don't know any websites per se just some places down here that will cater to what the customer wants, even if it's just for a bottle or so.

OOOOOO......I just thought of something. You could check out Italy in Epcot World Showcase the next time you go!!!!! We got some great ones in Germany. YUM-O

OMG!!! Now I want to go. Have always wanted to really. My sister and her family lives north of Atlanta. I soooooo want to try the Lady and Sons. I absolutely love Bobbie. :lovestruc Don't tell DH!!! Uncle Bubba's is Paula's brother's place, right? I could travel just to eat places..Now I'm not going to like my lunch. :(

What part of Atlanta?

Back to Savannah... Starfish is ran by the Union Mission there along with the Vocational/Technical school in the area. I havent been to it yet but have heard great things.

You have to drive out to Tybee. The beach is great and not too commercialized or too crowded. Breakfast Club is run by an honest to god chef trained at one of the major culinary schools. He decided he wanted to get away from the ratrace and bought the place after visiting Tybee once. When John Kennedy Jr got married just south of there on another island, he hired the Breakfast Club owner to cater the entire event. Last time I was there I had an omelet with homemade sausage, shrimp, cheese and onions. The wife had a quiche with crab meat. He closes around 2 so that he can spend the rest of the day fishing.

Back in Savannah, if you like homemade beer try Moon River Brewery. They also make a great cider:drinking1

Take one of the horse drawn carriage tours. They are very good. I havent done any of the ghost tours yet so I cant tell you about those.

Anything else you wanna know ask.

Sounds like we have the same tastebuds. They should make up small sample bottles of wine, put several of the same type, (ie sweet or fruity) in a sample pkg. I'd buy one. I just hate to buy a whole bottle, just to find out I hate the taste. Dale paid over $100 for a bottle of champagne once.(long long time ago) It was just plain nasty. Very dry, and bitter. yuck! Give me the cheap $10.00 a bottle stuff and I'm a happy camper.:rotfl2: I hear there is a winery north of town. Maybe I'll check it out this summer. See if they have a tasting. Now that I know what to ask for. I've always been afraid they will think I'm an idiot:lmao:

Andy, thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to find some. I don't mind paying for a good bottle of wine. I just want to like to be able to drink it.:drinking:

Dale is home. He's sleeping. poor baby. He got up at 1:00 am so he could get home this morning. I think I'll grill him a nice steak and some veggies for dinner tonight. He gets so tired of truck stop food or worse fast food 7 days a week.

Have a great evening. I'll try to check back in later.

A good way to find wines you like is to find a good wine bar. Look for one that carries wine from more than one winery and has a knowledgeable, friendly staff. See if there is a "Grape" in your part of the country. The ones I have been to in Atlanta are laid back and often will host wine tastings.

Also look in your local newspaper to find wine tastings or wine clubs.

Or take it upon yourself to host a wine tasting party. Invite some friends over and ask them to bring a bottle. Maybe divide the guests in to ones bringing red, white and sparkling.

I do think there is a winery in Medicine Park/wildlife refuge area. I'll have to see if I can find it. No wine bars here. Just alot of plain ole redneck bars. There is one in the Oklahoma City Bricktown area. I'm taking Lindsey and her best friend to a concert in July, and we are staying downtown. We are stayig two blocks from historic Bricktown. My goal for the evening will be to try a few wines while the girls are at the concert.:thumbsup2
I like your idea of hosting a wine tasting. I'll look into that. Thanks Andy. I'm learning so much about wine:)

That is so awesome!!!! Looks like he has lost some weight since I last saw him on tv. Maybe not. :rotfl2: Now I want seafood and Paula's cooking!!!!
