12/24/08 Christmas Cruise on the Wonder

I haven't heard any horror stories. Should I? Yikes. This is my baby we're talking about. But he does traverse the bed up, down and sideways during the night so the doc is calling it apnia. He has a nasal-y little voice and the docs who have looked at his tonsils always say something like "whoa, that's a the biggest set of tonsils I've ever seen on a kid". I don't know the particulars on the surgery, just that it is being done as outpatient surgery by a civilian ENT who basically said it would be easy as pie and healed in a week. Should I be worried?

Adrianna. Do you know which civilian dr,or which outpatient clinic he will be going to?
I ask because Valerie used to work as a surgical tech at the Great Plains Surgical Clinic. Most cases were ENT with Dr.Aycock, and Dr Snell. Both are excellent Drs. Dr Snell took out Michael's tonsils a couple years ago. He also took his adnoids, and did a turbenate(sp?) reduction. He see's him once a year for his allergy checkup. He has to take weekly shots for his allergies. If it grows, he's allergic:sad2: I highly recommend either dr. And no, you shouldn't be worried. Val has gone to the store for me,but when she gets back, I'll have her post to reassure you.:grouphug:

That is toooo funny!!! I wouldn't give up the good skincare either. It's never too early to start. I worked with a plastic surgeon for a while so I definitely see and recognize the benefits. DH sounds wonderful! Won't pay for the botox if you are causing the wrinkles....:lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: Sounds like my kind of man.

As for the surgery, it really is no big deal. I just know people that have heard of horror stories and they get all bent out of shape. At most, the procedure will be 30 min. I have heard the tonsil comment before about my own...when I still had them. But the more I had strep throat the more they shrank. And healed in a week is right on. It's usually more painful and longer as an adult. Just curious as to the equipment. It's one of my vices....Don't worry a bit.

I heard that comment about Michael's before they were taken out. We didn't even know hoe huge they were.l Valerie made me take him to see the ENT she worked with at the time. His pediatrician never said anything. :confused3 He was in 7th grade when they took his out.
Courtney. I'm sure my DD can answer your questions about what equipment they use. I'll see if she will post the answers for you when she gets back.

We're going on this trip, our first cruise. Will be me and my wife, our son (who is due to be born in July), my parents, my sister, her husband, my 6 year old niece and almost 2 year old nephew. Just ordered the Passporter Guide through Amazon but I'm sure we'll have plenty of questions to ask before and after the book gets here.

Welcome to Disboards this cruise, and the world of cruising AndymanGA and family.:cheer2:
It sure is good to have you. We were beginning to think our four families were going to have run of this ship:rotfl2: Passporter is the perfect guide for you. I'm Brenda, the other girls will introduce themselves soon. My family hasn't cruised DCL since 2000,so not sure how much help I'll be in that dept. But anythng you want to know about cruising itself, I got ya covered:thumbsup2 Can't wait to get to know all of you better.:goodvibes

Happy early birthday to you:flower3: Ok, now you have to post a picture of your new look:hippie:
Lindsey talked her dad into letting her get her nose pierced for her 15th birthday. The deal was, it has to stay small. She has a tiny diamond stud, and it doesn't look bad at all.( I had visions of huge rings hanging out of her nose:lmao: :scared1: )

Well, we got Lindsey's car today. a 2009 Toyota Corolla. Man is it tiny. I do fine in it,but Michael's head hits the top of the roof, and his head is like 6 inches above the headrest:rotfl2: Safe to say,he will only drive it to take his driving test. If the officer doesn't laugh himself to death first:lmao:

Welcome Andyman! We cruised the Disney Magic in January, so if you have questions I may have answers. Are you doing WDW before the trip and where are you staying?

Adrianna

Annette-

Ouch... but cool. Hip mama!

Brenda-

It is Aycock and Snell, Dr. Snell is performing the surgery I think, and the surgery is at Southwestern a week from Tuesday.

Not doing WDW this trip. I dont think our soon to be born son would enjoy it at 5 months.

Any tips for parents bringing a 5 month old? What to pack? What not to pack?

Our daughter was 12 months old at the time, so lemme think. The boat has a very limited, way overpriced supply of diapers and wipes in the gift shop, so you'll want to bring all those with you. The chefs will puree baby food for you from scratch, but at five months, they're usually on cereal if anything so probably bring that, too. And all the formula you'll need if you're a formula family. The dinners are major deals and last 1.5 to 2 hours total which may be quite the stretch for a tot that young, especially if you have second seating. We used all of our allotted nursery hours at dinner time so that we could enjoy the meals without feeling rushed. I was amazed at the staff in Flounder's Reef. They were great and we won't hesitate to use up all of our nursery hours once again! You can book those online as soon as your window opens up at 75 days.

Oh, and a Pack n Play (portable crib) takes up most of the free space in a stateroom. We had a Cat. 5 last time as we had visions of putting the kids to bed and then sitting out on the balcony at night. Unfortunately, it is pretty hard to get out to the balcony once the Pack n Play is set up.

That's off the top of my head, so if I think of more I'll post.

Well, I have no experience with infants and cruising, but I'll pass along a tip I read about on the disboards. If you are flying, you may want to ship diapers and formula to the ship. I think the ship may provide a pack and play, but I'm not positive. You can check on the general cruise board to be sure.

Courtney, my DD says yes, they do use the Coblator here, but Dr Snell doesn't give a local. Adrianna, Val said to tell you what the Coblator she and Courtney are talking about does. She says it suctions and squirts out water at the same time to reduce bleeding. Val says he will also take out his adnoids. Not that anything is wrong. It's just something he does. She also wants me to tell you, that day 2 post op will be the worse day for your son. The first day he will still be a little groggy and will sleep alot. She says if you have anymore questions, she will be happy to talk to you and do whatever she can to reassure you and your DH. Just let me know and I'll pm you her phone number.:grouphug: From Val.

Annette, I didn't mean to not comment, I so can't multi task:rotfl2: I've trying to keep up on the boards, and with Lindsey, her friend,Val and her family, and talk to Dale on the phone too. So glad Val, DH is doing the BBQ cause I'd most likely burn the burgers:scared1: :lmao:
The piercing looks cool. You are lucky your DD 12 is ok with it. If I even suggested gettting a tattoo or a piercing, Lindsey would be mortified:eek: hmmmmmmm:rolleyes: Might be fun to tease her a little bit:rotfl2:

AndymanGA-
Welcome to the cruise! It will be our family's first as well, so unfortunately I won't be able to help there. I did hear that you can ask to have the coffee table removed from your room. That may give you more floor space. Pack n' Play's are wonderful anywhere, IMO.

Annette-
Looks nice. You're still brave in my book.

Adrianna and Brenda-
Good to know he uses Coblator. It really does speed up recovery time and makes for a less painful procedure. If I remember correctly, the video that was shot by the company and the first big article/study that came out regarding it was done at my hospital. Whereas with regular electrocautery it actually burns the tissue (including surrounding tissue), the Coblator uses radiofrequency waves and the irrigation to destroy the tissue at the molecular level, at a lower heat. It is more precise and won't damage the surrounding tissue as well. And if I remember correctly, the stuff I said about the scab formation and what to watch for will be obsolete....no scab. About the adenoids, I don't know Dr. Snell but I do know that they can do a tonsillectomy without the adenoidectomy. However, hearing about his problem I would deduct that he will do them. The use of the local anesthesia will most likely not be needed since the Coblator will be used. It doesn't create as much pain as, well, burning the tonsillar bed once they are removed. I am glad that Brenda's daughter could help out with more info. You should have a big sigh of relief.

Courtney, I'm laughing so hard. Valerie used almost your exact words when explaining to me what the Coblator does. When she was finished, I told her " once again in english please". She laughed at me and gave me the response I gave Adrianna:lmao:

Hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day Weekend. Val and her family has gone home,so it's just Lindsey, her friend, and me. We got in the pool for a little while today, but while it was in the 90's, the water is still a little too cold. Course the wind didn't help much. I'll probably take the girls to the water park tomorrow. Let them hang out with all their friends. Michael is staying over at our oldest DS's house. Maybe I'll get some quiet time in.:cloud9:

Brenda, you'll like this one. Consider the Coblator a low temp high speed vibrator that irrigates and suctions at the same time. Is that a clearer picture? :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2:  :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

:lmao:

Sorry if that picture was too clear.....:rotfl2:

"I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way."

Just trying to explain in plain english. There was all this other bit about plasma wands but even I have a hard time with that......:lovestruc
