11yo wants a digital camera....

My 11yo DS wants a digital camera. He loves taking pictures. I have a fuji A365 that I'd gladly give him and upgrade mine but I don't have alot of $$ to put into one.
I'd like to get one that doesn't have a delay in taking the picture. How much do those run and what do I look for to make sure that's what I'm getting? What would you suggest as a decent camera for an 11yo?

Besides low shutter lag, what else are you looking for. Also, not much money is relative, if you give a price range folks might be better able to assist.

What would you suggest as a decent camera for an 11yo?

We got our DD the Kodak EasyShare C300 for her 10th birthday.



It's nothing special really but WOOT.com had a great deal on them ($50). I'd rather her have a real camera and that makes good pictures than some of toys made for that pre-teen age group. The strategy worked. She takes her camera everywhere and has started asking when I'm going to hand my camera (D80) down to her.

I agree with this. My 6 year old DD has my old p&s. It is 4mp and she takes excellent care of it. (she is not the average 6 year old when it comes to electronics) I just handed my even older p&s, a 1.3 mp to my 4 year old who also does a great job with it. I am amazed at the shots they get. My DD is also learning to use my 35mm SLR (with lots of supervision there).

I looked at the Disney cameras and the fisher price cameras and felt for what they cost you can get a much better quality camera without all that branding attached. So I just handed mine down.

I too feel I will soon need to convince my DH that I need a new DSLR so that I can hand the Rebel XT down to her After all who am I to deny my DD the opportunity to grow as a photographer!
