I heard people next to me renting at Sanford, Dollar being told to buy the auto toll, it was about $30 more. If you only go to Disney and back not a saving, just a convienance. If you are going to Miami it's a deal. I just take quaters, dollars and get a receipt. I didn't have any issues but had all the receipts if I did.

We take 417 south from MCO every year and just pay the tolls at the booths that have personal working. Never had any issues. It's like two tolls at $1.50 each I believe. That's why we never do the prepaid option, it's like way more than you would ever pay by just using cash.

Texas has completely eliminated all cash payment options on tollways. You either use a toll tag or they take a picture of your license plate and send you a bill.

The new toll road in NC around the Raleigh Durham area are the same type, toll by tag or by NC Quick Pass, which is compatible with both EZPass and Sunpass. Too bad Sunpass isn't compatible with EZPass.

Ditto for Seattle. No toll booths. They will get rid of them in Orlando sooner rather than later. It will be very easy when they standardize all of the transponders in North America so you can use one from home.

Are you sure there wasn't a ramp before the toll sensor arches that looked like an exit ramp and that went to some tollbooths where you could pay with cash?

Using the South Exit out of MCO, there are two $1.50 tolls between MCO and the common Disney exits. (That was as of last June...not sure if there has been an increase). Someone else will have to chime in about WDW to Fort Lauderdale. That's mostly on the Florida Turnpike. They may have gone to a cashless system..

The Florida Turnpike IS cashless, however you can use the I-95 to get to Fort Lauderdale and there are no tolls there.

Ok thanks, my sister just drove to Disney last weekend from ft lauderdal so I will ask about the tolls. I know the last time we did it you could pay the whole toll at the beginning for all the tolls you would go through I think it was around $20 but that's been a long time ago! I'd like to avoid 95 if it's anywhere near rush hour!

You cannot do that now as the Florida Turnpike, as stated above, is cashless so you would need the Sunpass if you plan to use the Turnpike. We drove to Miami from WDW on the 95, leaving about 9am and had no issues.

The roads around Orlando are thick with drivers not only from all 50 states but also from countries all over the world. They are there mostly for tourism and some for business. So let's make the toll sytem confusing and inconvienent to those very drivers.

Looks like (2) $1.50 tolls with manned toll booths is what I'm going to encounter? Somebody way back had mentioned something about unmanned booths with the change catcher so to bring quarters - anybody know what they were referring to? Just trying to figure out if I need singles or quarters for our arrival day on me, as I do not plan on buying Dollar's ridiculous sunpass option (something like 9 bucks a day plus the tolls - for a 8 day rental and a purported 6 dollars total in toll charges to be encountered, just ridiculous).

Correct. Two $1.50 tolls. You can either pay at the manned booth or there is a change catcher lane if you have exact change. I usually make sure I have three singles with me to cover it and just stick with the manned lane. As long as no one is asking directions, it moves fairly well.

I should add, though, that you should take that into account when returning to catch a flight. It seems the manned toll lines are longer heading back out towards MCO (but it could be that I usually do that in late afternoon). Just give yourself enough time.

On the FL-417 toll road from the airport, there are two different exits one can take to the various Disney destinations. If you get off at the first one (World Center Drive), you only go through the two (large) $1.50 plazas, each of which includes manned cash lanes. If you get off at the second one (Osceola Parkway), you go through a small two-lane exit. One is Sunpass only. The other is exact-change/coin only. It is unmanned.

I am renting from Avis this week. Does any one know if they offer this ? I can't find it on their site. Truthfully I don't want it. I may pay cash and get a receipt each time. Are there tolls that are unmanned and if so what should a driver do if they pay but the lights go off?

We rent from Avis. The box that contains the SunPass is located on the windshield. You flip the switch up (or down) to activate it. There will be instructions on the box. If you don't want to use their SunPass, don't activate it.

We used Avis' SunPass once and then decided to get our own rather than pay the daily fee. We live out of state and had a transponder sent to us before our trip. We used our personal car's information to get the transponder and then downloaded the app to our phones. While DH is loading the car, I go into the app and add a car using the rental car's information (make, model, license plate #). You also input a start date and an end date for the rental car to be on your account.
