...

I broke my ankle, surgery was performed and Ultram was prescribed for pain. I did not have any side effects. The drug took away the pain and made me fall asleep, which is exactly what the doctor wanted.

Hehe..it gives my dad energy instead. He went nuts fixing up the house last time he was on it, pain and all.

I'm on it periodically for my rheumatoid arthritis and it doesn't make me sleepy which is why I take it. Falling asleep with a classroom full of kids is just not good! I'm sure there are some side effects but I haven't noticed any for me.

Took it post-op for pain and I was ready to start rearranging my cupboards, I ended up just taking a shower in the middle of the night hoping that it would relax me enough to let me sleep :bounce: I was doing this aaaallllll night long :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: . Needless to say, I was put on something else the next morning!! My Doc said it has done this to a few of her patients but she likes it because It is less sedating and I'm not sure but it may not be a narcotic but don't quote me on that. I hope it works for your daughter but if it doesn't seem to be helping get a call in beforethe pharmacy closes or it will be a lloooooong night! Amy

I give it routinely to a few residents at work and it seems to work for them quite well without side effects. As for being a narc. that varies state to state and place to place. At my job we treat it as one.

I was given this before my back surgery. I had a bad reaction to this medication! It happened within 24 hours of taking it and fortunately I had a doctor appt the next day. When I told my doc what was happening he told me to stop immediately! He said I had reaction that doesn't happen often but I usually have reactions to pain meds which is why I no longer attempt to take them. You can go to www.webmd.com and read about the medication.

Hi, I took Ultram when I broke my arm (no more jumping over baby gates for me!). The only side effect I had was I got very sick to my stomach. After the first few pills, it got better. Sbella

Ultram is one of the few drugs that makes me sick as a dog! I vomit, become dizzy and after the medication wheres off, I have a horrible hang-over like headache. I refuse to take it.

FROM THE ORTHO-McNEIL WEBSITE:

DRUG ABUSE AND DEPENDENCE
Tramadol may induce psychic and physical dependence of the morphine-type (µ-opioid). (See WARNINGS.) Dependence and abuse, including drug-seeking behavior and taking illicit actions to obtain the drug are not limited to those patients with a prior history of opioid dependence. The risk in patients with substance abuse has been observed to be higher. Tramadol is associated with craving and tolerance development. Withdrawal symptoms may occur if tramadol is discontinued abruptly. These symptoms may include: anxiety, sweating, insomnia, rigors, pain, nausea, tremors, diarrhea, upper respiratory symptoms, and rarely hallucinations.

Clinical experience suggests that withdrawal symptoms may be relieved by reinstitution of opioid therapy followed by a gradual, tapered dose reduction of the medication combined with symptomatic support.

WARNINGS
Seizure Risk
Seizures have been reported in patients receiving tramadol within the recommended dosage range. Spontaneous post-marketing reports indicate that seizure risk is increased with doses of tramadol above the recommended range. Concomitant use of tramadol increases the seizure risk in patients taking:
• Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI
antidepressants or anoretics){EFFEXOR, et. al.},
• Tricyclic antidepressants {triptylines} (TCAs), and other
tricyclic compounds (e.g., cyclobenzaprine {FLEXERIL},
promethazine {PHENERGAN}, etc.), or
• Other opioids.
Administration of tramadol may enhance the
seizure risk in patients taking:
• MAO inhibitors (see also WARNINGS – Use with
MAO Inhibitors),
• Neuroleptics, or
• Other drugs that reduce the seizure threshold.
Concomitant use of SEROTONIN re-uptake INHIBITORS and MAO INHIBITORS may enhance the risk of adverse events, including
seizure (see WARNINGS) and serotonin syndrome.

DD is supposed to start taking it today for pain as a result of a car accident on Friday
Oh gosh, your daughter was in a car accident? She has had a really tough 2 years..just when things smooth out..wham, she gets hit again. Hope she (and her car) is ok.

:wave2: Yes, I took it for car accident pain. Sorry to hear about your DD and I hope she will be better soon! :guilty:

I took half a pill and it made me sleep......and I mean it knocked me out! If I took it for a couple of days I would be out and groggy and it would take a few days before my head would clear when I stopped taking it.

In all of earlier bad times with back, this was one of best options for SSB as was non-narcotic, and did not make me sleepy at work. The ultram version does not have the Tylanol added (Ultracet).

From what I understand...ultram is a non-narcotic with narcotic like effects. At least, that's what a few docs have told me about it.

The first couple of times I took it, I felt drunk. So I was very careful with it...but after a couple of days, it didn't affect me that way. It actually had the most wonderful side effect for me...a wonderful feeling of euphoria! I loved this stuff!!! Then the prescription ran out... :guilty:

Anyway, it CAN be addictive, so that is something to watch carefully. But for me, it was the ONLY thing that would ease the pain in my back.

ETA: I did notice a difference between the name brand and the generic. The generic didn't seem as effective as the name brand. I know most drugs there isn't a difference, but there seemed to be for this one.

I did not realize there was such a wide variety of reactions to the medication. I thought mine was a normal reaction. :confused3 Maybe she should try half a tablet at home and see how she does with it. I can't imagine going thru the stress of the accident and being faced with replacement at work at the same time, one affecting the other! :grouphug:

I am a nurse and have given this drug out to a number of people of ther years. I haven't noticed any side affects with them and they are elderly.

I on the other hand tried it once for pain and it made me sooo dizzy that I had to go to bed until it wore off.

Hope your dtr feels better.
