$1000 Disney Dining: The endless review!

Part 11

Day 8, Dec 18: Sadly, this was to be our last Disney Dinner. It was the last full day of our vacation. We always try to make it a busy one because I have the reputation of getting a little sad when it registers with me that our Disney trip is almost over. DH reminds me, constantly, when he sees me staring off towards Spaceship Earth, that we'll be back in a short five months. I know. I'm still sad to leave. Anyway, after our great lunch at Le Cellier, we ran like maniacs to Mission Space and took turns riding it with Calvin and Beth... with either DH or I staying with Tommy in the play area where it lets out. We all LOVE this ride and must have done it about 3 times each with the older kids right after our Le Cellier lunch. Yes... on FULL stomachs. But, we were all successful... no protein spills for us. Calvin threatened to blow lunch yelling "I'm gonna CHOKE!" on one ride with me, while grabbing for the barf bag, then screaming "PSYCHE!" much to my relief... and that of the two other strangers in our pod. We had a busy afternoon and Tommy fell sound asleep in his stroller about 5:30pm on our walk back to the BCV. He was totally baked. Which, in turn, got me thinking about our dinner ADR at the Biergarten Restaurant in the German Pavillion. It's primarily Tommy's thing, because he loves the Oktoberfest-style show, although the rest of us all enjoy the heavy, bland food, huge beers and eating with strangers at our table. But, I'm thinking that he'll be too tired to really enjoy it tonight. So I look over at DH and say, "What do think about skipping the Biergarten tonight and trying to get into the Yachtsman Steakhouse, instead? We've never been there before and it looks pretty good." He looks down at Tommy and then back at me and we have a wordless conversation. DH and I have been together so long and know each other so well that we can often carry on whole conversations without speaking a word. I call it the "Marital Mind Meld". So my eyes say to his eyes, " Come on, honey, Tommy's too tired and we'll be back in May... we'll do it then for him. I'm too tired of eating HUGE meals and I want to just relax tonight for our last Disney Dinner. Plus, it's a STEAKHOUSE... you love steak... Beth does too. What could be better than TWO beef meals in one day? What do you say?" DH looks at me and his eyes say, "But... the Biergarten has sausage." (Even telepathically I talk WAY more than DH)... I give him the firm eye back, "STEAK, baby, steak!"... so, DH calls Beth and Calvin over and suggests "Hey... how would you guys like to have a nice, fancy dinner at the Yachtsman Steakhouse tonight, as it's our last dinner here?" Beth is agreeable because she loves steak. Calvin says fine, as long as I wear something other than the black dress I wore to Chef Mickey's. Sigh. Yes, my little man, Mommy's legs will be firmly encased in fabric for dinner. Don't worry. We put Tommy on the bed to nap while we all get cleaned up and "fancy". We are going to try and be walk-ins and, therefore, optomistically cancel our Biergarten ADR. We wander over around 7:30ish. I ask the CM if we can get in for dinner with a party of five. She says she'll put our name down and it'll be a bit of a wait. The kids are fine with that. They discover the Arcade beside Beaches and Cream. DH discovers that it's "Magically expensive". Tommy wakes up. We get seated about 40 minutes later. The inside of the Yachtsman is very nice. Formalish but not stuffy and we get a corner big round table by the window overlooking SAB. It's a very nice table. To Tommy's chagrin, it's not actually in a bathroom like at lunch. DH and I order draft beer. The kids all get sodas. DH and I get the Mussels for our appetizer... we'll be splitting them. We also are brought a basket of rolls and butter. There are these yummy pull-apart, flaky onion buns in the basket. They're GREAT. We ask for more. The mussels come out and they're really nice... not great... but definitely good and I would order them again. I taste bacon, garlic and white wine in the sauce and they have a tiny bit of a kick to them. Big portion, too. We eat the sauce that remains with the onion buns, that's yum. DH orders the Cowboy Steak(?) done rare for his meal. He asks for the horseradish mashed potatoes with garlic thyme jus as substitution. They DO sound good. The steak is really big... I think it's supposed to be 20oz. Beth orders the kids steak(rare) and fries, Calvin the cheeseburger meal and Tommy gets pasta with tomato sauce, again. I don't want a huge meal and am pretty sure DH will hand over some beef so I order the Farmers Salad as my main. Our server, who is fine but not overly friendly, gives me a bit of a dirty look. No kidding. She asks if we want them to split the steak onto two plates in the kitchen. No, I say, I just want a little taste of it... not a big piece. We order two more beer. Our dinner comes out soon enough but someone else(a runner?) brings it to the table. The steaks are both good... however both DH and Beth claim that the Le Cellier ones were better. I taste both and agree. DH's is a bit chewy... just a bit. Flavour is very good though and they're both cooked properly. DH says for the price, Le Cellier is a better choice. But he's happy enough and there is a HUGE amount of meat on his plate. The horseradish mashed potatoes are VERY delish and hot and creamy. Calvin thinks the cheeseburger is great. Big surprise there. Tommy is happy with his pasta and bread and eating pretty quickly. Now... my salad is very good. It's about 1/2 head of iceberg lettuce cut in two big wedges, sprinkled with a good amount of blue cheese crumbles and bits of hard boiled egg. The dressing is poured our all and is warm and bacony and quite yummy. I enjoy my salad very much and give a chunk to DH who likes it too. You must cut all the lettuce up yourself, though. Everyone eats and enjoys and DH asks the kids if they want to order dessert today? YES! They noted from the kids menu that there is a white chocolate puzzle and cupcake dessert and they get to paint the pieces themselves. We order just one from our server who is very hard for us to find whenever we need her now. She's not the sweetest CM we've ever met. She doesn't understand why we don't want three desserts for the kids. Because they won't eat it all I explain... OH. The older kids split and paint the pieces of the puzzle and eat them. Tommy gets the cupcake. We finish, pay and all agree that we enjoyed Le Cellier much better. But... we really have no regrets here. It was fine... but not spectacular. I give it a A-. Our server was a little disappointing, though. Oh well. We head off to enjoy our last evening at Disney... I try real hard not to cry. Just one more Disney meal left, tomorrow...

One more review to go... thanks.

I totally agree about Yachtsman. We had a good meal there but for the $$$ I expect a GREAT meal.

No steak dinner has ever matched the two meals we have had at Le Cellier.

Loving your reports - I am even getting a little sad that your trip is almost over!

I'm usually not one to make idle threats... but, I'm seriously considering writing an entire trip report that will focus on the other parts of our vacation apart from just our restaurant adventures. However, I'm afraid it will end up rivaling Tolstoy's War and Peace in length. And it'll take a while to do, too. I enjoy writing, though, so possibly. I'm thinking that it'll make a long, tedious and somewhat embarrassing read for Calvin, Beth and Tommy when they're older and want to recall our WDW exploits. See, Mommy IS always thinking of them!

Also to respond to "timandlesley"'s questions: Tom Sawyer Island is a hidden jem at WDW. Our family could spend hours there. We do. It's a great place to exercise your imagination. My late, wonderfully fun, funny Father, who had a boundless supply of energy, and I had great, long hide and seek games there when I went as a child. We do the same. Someday, when Tommy's older it'll be every man for himself in the game and THAT will rock! The fort and secret passages are cool and so are the tunnels. It's just great low-tech fun. The best kind. You can even sit and play checkers there. It's right off of Frontierland's main part. The CMs hide paintbrushes every morning (5, I think) for guests to find. You have to be on the first raft to the island when it opens. Then search, quickly, all around for them. I will NOT give any hints. Spoils the fun. You are allowed 1 per family and you take your paintbrush back to the raft captain who takes you back to the main dock and gives you a neat printed certificate which thanks you for participating in Tom's Scavenger Hunt. He'll fill out your party size on the back. You can use it anytime that day as a fast-pass for your whole group for Splash Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It's fun for us... we are a little competitive, though. Cheers, 1000HH.

Your reviews are great. I'm ROFL about your son loving to go to the restroom at restaurants. Mine are just like that! I swear my youngest drinks as much as he can so he has a reason to make bathroom trips.

Oh, pleasepleasepleaseprettyplease write a whole trip report! Your reviews have been cracking me up, and I would love to hear as many stories of Calvin's exploits (and everybody else's) as you care to dish out.

Please oh Please don't let it be an idle threat! The 24 questions and 100s of bathroom visits are priceless. Remind me so much of our family growing up. Besides, if you type up the experience, then the Kids can just give the novel to their therapist rather than delving into it on the couch :teeth:

Oh PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a total trip report...I'm begging, no, i'm DEMANDING ;) you do one ASAP!!!!!

Calvin reminds me of a male version of my 4 1/2 year old DD Aubrey. Thanks to you and hearing Aubrey today while shopping I have now bought a new notebook to take with us so I can jot down "Aubreyisms" on our trip....

This is the kicker that did it. We're driving away from Target tonight and we're listening to Christmas music (for us, we play holiday music until New Years). She's staring out her window and says, "Hey, Mom, who is Jesus' wife?" I tell her in my most theological-mom voice, "Jesus didn't get married, honey." She says, "But Mom EVERYONE has to get married". I tell her that there indeed people that don't get married and that's ok. I think the conversation has ended and we drive 5 minutes down the highway and she says, "BUT MOM, IF JESUS ISN'T MARRIED THEN WHO IN THE WORLD WILL TAKE CARE OF HIM??????" How can you argue with that... (I'm rethinking our family viewpoints on marriage after that one....)

Sorry to highjack the thread...but I live with a question kid too...

Part 12

Last Day, Dec 19: The five of us woke up early, packed up our things and said good-bye to our WDW home at the BCV. We were all sad. But we had one more thing to do before our flight back to Buffalo at 4:20pm. We were heading to Downtown Disney to do some Christmas shopping and have lunch. DH warned me not to buy much, and definitely nothing very large, as we BARELY got everything in our rental car. And, it was a 4-door Jeep Grand Cherokee, for goshsake! Hello, my name is 1000thhappyhaunt and I'm a life-long overpacker. I had to giggle as DH cursed me, under his breath, as he had to partly disassemble the stroller to get it to fit in the back on top of all the luggage. "Hurry up, my love, I have to buy more stuff for you to try to fit in the bags!" DH speaks to me telepathically with his eyes... and I tell him to watch his language! I realized, as I was packing, that there was NO WAY I was going to fit anything from Downtown Disney in, at all... unless I threw away some laundry...shhhhhhh, don't tell DH! I just chucked some of Calvin's stuff, anyway. So... we hit Downtown Disney and the place is hopping. We check out a few stores en mass and then decide to find a place for lunch before we split up to do some shopping. DH was to take Calvin and Beth... I was to go with Tommy. I suggest the Earl of Sandwich(A) as I'd heard so much about it on these boards. Everyone else knows better than to argue, although I saw a few furtive glances(three, exactly) towards the McDonald's. No WAY, people! We can get that at home... ok, not 10 dips or anything, but still, basically, the same. We wander into the Earl and it seems pretty busy. Luckily, Calvin spies a family just finishing up with their booth and goes over to claim it telling me quietly, thank the Lord, that "There's four of them, Mommy, and they're all pretty big. Five of us will fit in there for sure!" I sigh, "Calvin, CALVIN... at least let them FINISH chewing before you start helping them clear the table! CALVIN!"... and to the family of four, "Sorry, I'm sorry!" Thankfully, the husband says no problem they were finished, anyway, and we were welcome to their table and, yes, it's fine that our young son is already sitting down with them. Which was just as good because, just as we staked our claim to this table, a massive crush of humanity entered The Earl looking for tables, too. It was like The Hall of Presidents letting out on a hot summer day. I grabbed Beth and dashed into the line not yet knowing what everyone wanted to eat. We checked out the menu and I sent Beth back to the table to find out what DH and Calvin wanted. I was pretty sure of Tommy's order. My turn. I ordered the Beef n' Bleu for DH, a large green salad with lots of tomatoes, cucumbers and ranch dressing on the side for Calvin, two kids' peanut butter and jellies for Beth and Tommy, a side of coleslaw, a side of potato salad, two little bags of chips, two cokes and two chocolate milks. Then I was stuck. I COULD NOT decide what to have, myself. Everything sounded too good! I hummed and hawed... I HATE people like me in lines. I started to really feel the pressure of fifty people in line behind me, staring at the back of my head, urging me to hurry, so I just said "Ok... the Special. The one that's a whole Thanksgiving Dinner on one bun. Good." Whew! We pick up our salads, chips and drinks and sat down to wait for our order to be called. Our orders come up surprisingly quickly and are handed to us in a take-out bag. The place is, by now, as crazy busy as Chef Mickey's and twice as loud. DH comments that the place sure is popular. No?! We start to eat and we see why... the food is good... and it's reasonably priced... WOW... a Disney miracle! The sandwiches are warm and big. The bread is almost english muffinish... but not. But good. DH is very much as fan of his Beef n' Blue... he doesn't offer me a bite. I don't ask for one either. After the packing fiasco, I don't imagine I'm in DH's top ten list of favourite things at the moment. Beth and Tommy really like their warm pbandj's but they are the same size as the adult sandwiches so they just split one with chips and milk and they are full. Calvin has a very, very large salad for one little boy. After he loads it up with TWO side cups of ranch dressing, he guarantees that no one else wants it, either. It's all his. Luckily, I'm sitting beside him so I don't have to watch him eat the thing. DH is priviledged to be sitting directly across from him with the best view of it all. Ick. There have been less messy homebirths. He says it's GREAT, though. My sandwich is a warm roll with turkey, gravy, stuffing and cranberry sauce on it. It's good, really good. But I suffer from buyer's remorse and decide while I'm eating it that I should have had The Caprese... what WAS I thinking? It was the pressure. DH took the side of coleslaw and I took the potato salad. Must say, it was very good, too... and a great deal for 99 cents. It tasted mustardy and dilly. Pretty much like homemade. The potatoes were firm, too, which is a plus in potato salad. We were all full and guess what? NO DESSERT. AND...we have one pbandj left over for the plane. We finish up, offer our table to the small crowd that has gathered, staring at us, waiting for us to finish and head out to spend MORE money at Disney. And so we come finally, mercifully, to the end of The Endless Review.

Sadly, I have decided to write an entire trip report. It will be called "The happyhaunts go south...the endless trip report!" Stay tuned.

I can't wait to read it!! I'll definitely be looking for it. Thank you for taking your time to do this, it's been a blast reading it. :rotfl:

Thanks for the review. I've heard only good things about Earl of Sandwich. Looking forward to the trip report! :flower:

Just to warn you all. I have, in fact, posted the first part of what will be an unbearably long, frustrating read on the Trip Reports Board entitled, "The happyhaunts go South... the endless trip report!"... my apologies in advance.

Very entertaining trip report! Thanks for writing. I laughed...I cried...no wait, I only laughed. Okay, well, I guffawed that one time... :rotfl:
