I have uploaded pics from all four parks, including three of the parades, onto my web site. If you are interested, you can view them by going to http://www.destinationwdw.com and clicking on the 100 Years of Magic button in the left menu frame. Enjoy!!!

BTW, this celebration rocks!!!

What a great series of pictures... I *WISH* I was going to be able to make it down for the celebration now.

Thanks for posting! Now I'm really looking forward to my trip in two weeks. :)

Scoop,

I had very bad expectations for this celebration. I hated the idea of that hat, I hated the lack of a new e-ticket, I hated the lack of a new fireworks show, and I hated the thought of changing Tapestry of Nations.

After yesterday, I can honestly say that I love this celebration. It did not seem overly commercialized. The announcements for Disney Stars and Motor Cars and Share a Dream Come True do mention the sponsors once, but that is certainly bearable. In One Man's Dream, Hallmark is mentioned just once in the CM introduction to the fim. No sponsor is mentioned in ToD. Of course there is lots of merchandise available with the 100 Years logo, especially in the store under the hat, but it's not advertised any more than during past celebrations. There was also very little mention of the pins (and they do look pretty neat when they light up during the parades).

The only thing I was disappointed with was Share a Dream Come True. It's a nice parade, but it passed us in just eight minutes (we watched it right at the Frontierland gate, so we didn't actually see the floats stop for the interaction segments), and the constant voiceovers were a little too much for me. Expecting the worst, I was positively surprised by both DSaMC and ToD.
I did not see the AK parade since it was scheduled for the same time as the Magic Kingdom's, but I'll probably see it tomorrow or Sunday, and I'll try to post pictures of that ASAP.

LOL! Nice quote Scoop!

I thank you too Guide. I wasn't expecting a lot of great reviews around here, mainly because it seems most people either just want Disney to fail or (more often) we just don't like change. I'm really looking forward to the AK Parade, so I'll await your review & I can't wait to buy a Pin or two (corney, I know - but that stuff is fun!).
:smooth: :smooth: :bounce: :smooth: :smooth:

Wow, thanks for putting up the parade shots, they're great! :) I especially like the MGM parade... can't wait to see the AK one. Not overly impressed with the MK parade, having the characters in snowglobes just looks...... cheap. I don't know maybe its just me.

...glad it exceeded your expectations once you experienced it....

rather than....
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are people who are disappointed that the "Walt" celebration appears to be little more than advertisments for pin and snow globe sales.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...the fact that the commercials may be enjoyable ones does not change their origins in any way.

There are absolutely zero expectations as to the quality of the experience implied by that quote.

The thread from which that quote was originally pulled was concerned with why Disney's management was making certain decisions. It had nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not parades were enjoyable.

WDWguide's comments give me the impression that the sponsering of these parades is the same as the sponsering of everything since 1955.

Tell me, if Disney does something the same way it always has for 46 years, is it bad because Eisner did it? or is it bad, because we now have the Internet and learn about it?

disney has no control over Hallmark, but it sounds like for Disney's part, they did it the right way, the same way they always hve done it, so no harm no foul.

As to where the quote is pulled from, and the context. the fact remains that that sentiment exists. discoop didn't say who was quoted, so it is up to the reader if they are interested, to find out and thus read the thread and thus deduce the true meaning. it really doesn't matter he quoted it, because they are not his words, he didn't attribute it, so know assumptions can be made abut who said it or its true relevence.

No. It's bad because (and here I quote from one of my posts in that thread):
When you consider the relatively small level of attention being paid to the focus of the celebration in contrast to the high visibility of the pin and snow globe ads; when you consider that this celebration is merely one of a series of 15-month celebrations beginning two years apart with the intention of boosting attendance at a specific park; when you consider that the center of the celebration is a park Walt had nothing to do with, and actually contains a significant percentage of non-Disney content... well, when you consider all that, it's difficult for me to believe that the intention was to celebrate Walt's birth or his life.
The 100 Year Celebration might include the best snow-globe parade that the 'scoop ever sees, but overall, it's not much of a celebration of Walt or his life. That's what the original thread was talking about.
they did it the right way, the same way they always hve done it
If you want to further discuss this, you might take it to another thread, rather than have it buried here, off-topic. Personally, I don't see this as the way Disney has always done it. They've always used partners to help finance projects, but the projects typically had creative meat to them. Mr. Lincoln and Carousel were both created with corporate money for the World's Fair, absolutely true. But the projects existed in the first place because Walt was developing the lifelike animatronics that would become the basis for so many other attractions, and because Walt felt that there needed to be a celebration of progress and how it has helped our lives. The projects had reasons for being that were based in creativity and entertainment.

The components of the 100 Year Celebration have their own reasons for being. Replacements for parades that have grown long in the tooth, advertisements for snow globe sales and light-up pins, a reason that more people might actually stay in AK after about two o'clock, hiding a one-time park icon because the building it represents is now "the competition." I'm not even saying that any of those are bad business reasons to do something (a few of them have been good business reasons to take some kind of action for quite a while, now), but not one of them represents a valid celebration of Walt Disney's life.

Correct. The pulled quote was true when it was written, and is still true.
it really doesn't matter he quoted it, because they are not his words, he didn't attribute it
It most circles I've run in, not attributing when you use someone else's words is frowned upon. In some, it's actually considered dishonest.
so know assumptions can be made abut who said it or its true relevence
I'm not sure what you mean here. A quote was pulled and placed in such a way so as to attempt to discredit the quote with new information. The new information does not, in fact, discredit the quote. I made no assumption at all about who said it or its true relevance; I know for a fact who said it, and precisely what is its true relevance.

So I posted that information, with the intent that no one need make any assumption about its origin and relevance.

But Jeff, this thread is specifically about the parades themselves and their content. it has been reported that the parade contains one and only one mention of the sponser. This is typical of Disney's policy towards corporate sponsers.
thedscoop's referencing of the quote serves only to illustrate what could have been substituted for honest opinion due to dis-satisfaction with the celebration in general. This topic is very specific to the parades and thus my comments are 100% on topic and I need not open a new thread.

The fact remains that regardless of the motivations behind the event, the event itself has apparnetly been done with Disney flare and without comercialism. this bodes well for the rest of the celebration. Since most comments about the comercialism are not based on fact, but on assumption, we canot truely know if this is not representative or if in fact we all over-reacted.

In short, Good, the parade is well done and doesn't have any comercialism besides a brief mention of the sponser. This is normal.
All the other motivations are not relevent to this thread.

That's cool; then the 'scoop should have left my words out of the thread in the first place.

If I had not been quoted out of context, I would never have posted to this thread; I've not seen the parades and can't speak about them specifically. The only reason I came in was to clarify that my quote had nothing to do with what the 'scoop implied it did, nor with the thread that the 'scoop pulled it into.
This topic is very specific to the parades and thus my comments are 100% on topic and I need not open a new thread
I meant the "doing it same as they used to" part. I thought that was an interesting question about Disney's past and present partnerships that could be discussed further, and did not need to be limited to these parades.
the event itself has apparnetly been done with Disney flare and without comercialism
Sounds great, although I'm not sure why you keep trying to make that point to me: I've never disputed it, in this thread or the other.
