I read online that parents can give permission for their 10 yr old to go in the Edge. Has anybody done this? We are considering as my daughter did the Oceaneer when she was 8 and didnt enjoy all the little kids. Not that she doesnt like to have fun but she usually hangs with older kids and gets along and relates to them well. But she is also pretty shy and didnt connect with anybody last time. Im wondering if the older kids would be easier for her to hang with.

Any comments?

Thanks!

The ability for a 10 year old to be cleared to participate in Edge is dependent on how many kids in the correct age range are onboard any given cruise. If the number of kids in the correct age range is the maximum number allowed in Edge for the cruise, she will not be able to "age up".

But, yes, parents have been able to sign waivers for their 10 year old to participate in Edge. I'll just point out, that it's possible that the kids that actually belong there could give her the cold shoulder (I've heard of that happening), because she'll basically be a "baby" in their circle.

I have not personally done this, but others have. I will be crossing my fingers and toes that my son who will be 10 yrs 9 mos on our next cruise will be allowed to go to Edge. He did not like the younger club much right after turning 9. He has older siblings and gets along well with older kids. You might want to mention your daughter's shyness to the counselors the first time she goes to the club. I don't think older kids would necessarily be more likely to reach out to her, but the counselors might be able to help get the ball rolling. The Edge counselors on our cruise seemed involved, and from what I saw put effort into the kids having a good time.

We sailed in Jan, DS will be 11 in March. We went and tried to get him into the Edge, and the CM asked him to try the club first because they were pretty full. I don't know if they would have let him in since he ended up meeting four or five 9 and 10 years olds in the club, and had a great time. We only saw him for dinner.

How supervised is the EDGE? Having "daddy " nerves about my daughter moving up to this club with older children. Just want reassurance that they are supervised and have a goto person. Are there lots of planned activities for the children?

They are supervised and there are plenty of planned activities but the kids can come and go as they please. I often found my son wandering around with his new friends throughout the ship. I was ok with that because he is on the older end of the kids in the Edge but I would be more concerned about a 10 or 11 year old girl.

My kids have always gone to the Edge starting at age 10. They have never had a problem fitting in or making friends.

Many of the activities that the Edge group do are out and about the ship (scavenger hunts are a big one). So if you move your 10 year old up you need to be comfortable with this.

My son went to Edge and had a great time. Yes he did meet up with friends in his own. He set alarms for when he had an activity that he wanted to do.

He had his mind set on going to the Edge we were going to try the kids club, but I found it to be unorganized when we went to sing him up. After waiting for a good 20 minutes in line they took the person that just walked in.

For my son it was the best choice. I must admit that he was only 2 months away from his 11th birthday.

Thank you for all the replies. She just turned 10 in Jan. I'm not sure if I would be comfortable having her walk about the ship but I also have a 13 year old also (who wants me to move her up to the Vibe..lol) Maybe if I have my 10 yr old only go to the Edge when her sister is in there.

Again, thanks for the input. She did not enjoy the kids club as much as she thought she would on our last cruise. I was a bit disappointed in it also. We would watch the times so she could go to do the craft project or whatever and we would show up and it was just a table in the corner. Also, the one time they made cookies they wouldn't let her eat one even though they called me to confirm she could! (she has fructose malabsorption, cant have high fructose corn syrup. I explain their homemade cookies did not have that in them and she could eat them). But they still didn't let her. She was embarrassed...all the kids kept asking her why she wasn't eating one...she said I kept saying, I dunno, ask them..I can eat them! Most of the time she played Just Dance or sat and watched a movie while the little ones ran around her. My then 11 year old in the Edge had an awesome time though and loved the planned activities.

We were on the last cruise before it was redone. So maybe they have more things to do now? Anybody know?

On our first cruise my youngest was 10 and my oldest was 14. I was able to get my 10 year old into the edge so he could be with his brother. In the end my older one only went to the vibe and my younger to the edge so they weren't together. Now that they are older and look back on that cruise they felt they were too young to be where they were. They felt strongly that the Edge was for middle schoolers and the vibe was for high schoolers and the one year difference was a big deal. They did have a great time but they did feel too young.

Edge was the best choice for my 10 year old. We went in knowing that she may not be allowed in, but willing to try. She was unhappy in the kids club at 8 because she was too old for the activities, and we knew it wouldn't go over well at 10. They let her into the Edge and it was a great fit for her.

That being said, you have to be comfortable with the level of freedom there. They are allowed to come and go at any time, there is no restroom in the club, at least on the classic ships so they have to take the stairs up a deck and walk through the atrium. They are allowed to leave and go to the buffer for food, or just leave period. They don't stop them. Some of the activities send them out and about on the ship in groups, with required checkins via wave phone. if you don't exit your kid leaving without you then you need to be sure they will heed your wishes on their own because counsellors will not enforce that.

If you are trying to get a child moved up to the next group I would definitely NOT mention that they are shy. This could backfire and get them denied, if it is even an option to do so on your cruise. One cruise DD10 wanted to be with DS12 the one brunch we were going to Palo. She hasn't like any of the clubs in the past since she was 3. We hoped that she could just go with him to the Edge that one night instead of staying in the room. When I mentioned that to the CM at the door, he got extremely snippy and said that if she needed to be with her older brother to go to the club that probably meant that she wasn't developmentally mature enough to be in the Edge at all. She was already in 6th grade due to having a birthday just before the cutoff, so every day at school she was around 11 & 12 yos in her classes and did fine. The kids ended up hanging out together in the room watching a movie & brought quick service back to the room for lunch while we were at Palo.

The way access to Edge is handled bugs me just a bit. I've written to Disney. Parents have to sign in/out babies. There's a code word and a bracelet for the 3-12 year olds (or just the bracelet if the child has check out privileges), 14-17 years olds get a brand new key card and have to swipe it to access the club. But Edge? with the 11-14 year olds? eh, no worries, walk in, walk out, no one checks your card for the sticker, you don't sign in, no big deal. It's like this whole tween group fell through the cracks as far as "security" is concerned.

You will need to speak with your child about what you expect. Are you good with them doing whatever they please, or should they meet you at certain places at certain times? Are they allowed to participate in the shipwide scavenger hunt, or once in the club do you want them to stay there?

We were on the last cruise before it was redone. So maybe they have more things to do now? Anybody know?

Our first cruise my younger girls were 8 and 9, and obviously in the club/lab. My middle had a similar situation with the baking situation. She has reactions to some red dyes. They made cookies - no m&m's, no dyed anything at all, but the counselors refused to allow her to eat them, even though she knew she could. Her sister tried to share and the counselor wouldn't let her. I get where they are coming from, I really do, but her "sensitivity" trigger wasn't even present. When we filled out the paperwork this year for the girls her sensitivity wasn't listed. So I didn't put it back in. She was absolutely humiliated at the way it was handled that summer and at 10/11 she would have been even more so. It wasn't an issue this time at all.

My middle daughter was 10 at the start of our cruise this time, she turned 11 a few days in. Her name was "on the list" for Edge but they still wanted her to try the lab/club first. My youngest turned 10 a month before the cruise. I asked if there was room- they asked her to try the lab/club first. They weren't overly impressed with Edge when we visited during open house. So the first night the girls went to the lab/club. It was "eh", lots of small kids since it was school term when we went. The next day during the day they went to the lab/club in the morning and at lunch I went to ask them if they wanted to eat with us or stay in the lab/club. They were at the handwashing station before I finished my question. So after lunch we went to Edge, I signed the waiver and let them stay for a few hours. They met me at the elevator bank at the exact time I asked them (actually a few minutes early, something their 16yo sister never figured out how to do! lol) They enjoyed Edge, but didn't want to take off their lab bracelets just yet. By day 6 of a 7 night cruise they had not gone back into the lab/club, had met friends who were in the same situation (11 years old, can do both) and we finally turned in the bracelets.

If you had asked me at the beginning of the cruise, I would have said that they would not have enjoyed Edge. It's a VERY small area, with very little to do, but having each other and making friends made all the difference. So, ask if it's possible, don't expect it, and keep options open. You never know which they will like better.

We are in a similar situation as well. Our DS will turn 14 in the middle of the cruise and DD will be a few months shy of 11. DS will absolutely being going to The Edge and DD would have fun in Oceaneers Club/Lab but she is a little shy when she doesn't know anyone....but would be fine as long as she knew she was with her brother. Our DS isn't exactly thrilled that we want his sister to be in the same club with him but it would definitely give DH and I some peace of mind knowing they were together in the same club. This is our 1st cruise and we want them to have an enjoyable experience...I'm hoping that DD will be able to move up The Edge. I know that they will only move kids up if the numbers are on the lower side and since we are cruising mid September, I wouldn't think that it will be overly crowded with kids since it's regular school time.

We leave in a few weeks. My DD is 11. The other family we are going with have a DD that will turn 11 in 3 weeks after the cruise. Will they let the other girl go to the edge with my daughter? She also has an older brother who will be in the edge.

In all honesty it will depend on how full the Edge is with kids who are legitimately that age. If they are at capacity with kids that age, they likely won't be able to move her up. Best to prepare for worst-case.
