My wife and I are thinking about heading to Disney World for our 10 Year Anniversary.

This would be our first Kid-Free Disney Trip.
We are thinking about going December 30 to January 6... Is this a crazy idea? We have never been to Disney on New Years.

Tips and ideas please!

The idea is not crazy. DH and I did our first solo trip this past November.
we stayed at SSR and RIV. The Rivera is the place for couples. So, elegant and gorgeous. The quiet pool is beautiful with plenty of cushioned loungers and couches. The lakefront area is beautiful. SSR renovations are beautiful and the proximity to DS is great for some fun couple dinners

Our sons are all in their 20’s but have been with us on all WDW trips over the years. We have done solo DCL cruises. The trip in November we only did two parks MK and Epcot. Actually, my DH only went to Epcot. I went MK solo and I had a blast. No one to take care of or worry about. I had a solo lunch at Skipper Canteen...Yummy.

I have never been there over any holidays.
Good luck with your plans

I will be back this summer with all 3 sons, a fiancé and my girlfriend. DH is staying home. We are staying at RIV and SSR once again.😎👍🏻

If you mean December 2021 and intend to do a DVC reservation for that period, the first thing you need to do is check availability, because it is probable that both studios and 1BRs at every resort are already filled for at least some of the nights.

Other than that, it is difficult to say whether it is a crazy idea. My experience with NYE time at WDW has all been outside of covid periods and what might exist this December may be substantially different than pre-covid years due to covid created restrictions. I do not know what celebrations will actually take place and those may be substantially fewer than non-covid times. I also do not know the extent to which the covid crowd rules will limit the crowd sizes, which in non-covid times were extremely huge. In other words, I have no way to predict what might happen this year based on past experiences.

I have actually done NYE time a dozen times in the past and it is crazy if you go expecting to do a lot of rides and attractions and have problems with huge crowds. Think street crowds so thick that it can take 45 minutes to walk from Space Mountain to Splash Mountain at MK, and popular rides can get 3 hour stand-by lines, so you are essentially limited to fast pass rides and possibly finding something else if you go first thing in the morning when the park opens. (Note that the huge crowd times would last the first three days of your desired trip; thereafter it will drop off although still be rather large) However, the shows and parades are made for the holidays, the fireworks displays are extreme, some extra outside shows appear at parks, at least a number of the resorts have very good bands NYE (I have been to Jambo and Boardwalk events for NYE), and a number of EPCOT nations usually have much going on outside.

I like Magic Kingdom a lot, but my wife LOVES it. So even on trips with kids I usually take them back for a chill half day and give her time in the park alone. Funny. Thank you for the encouragement and advice! Much appreciated.

Yes nail on head. I was wondering if I was crazy for expecting to be able to get a room this late. I am not a DVC owner, but will keep my eye out on the DISboards and DVC rent/trade. Thanks for the words of wisdom to set expectations for us. Bands and crowds would be stressful with kids I think, but I think it would be perfect for the two of us.

We did our first NYE at WDW in 2019, ringing in 2020. Three of us: husband, me and daughter (15). We got to MK probably around 2-3 p.m. We had dinner reservation at The Plaza. People start staying in front of the castle in the morning. Saying it was very, very crowded is an understatement. We did the dessert party at Tomorrowland Terrace. Scheduled it to be there watching fireworks with the countdown. It was nice to be ale to see the fireworks, sit down and eat without being in those huge crowds. Once it was over and everybody was exiting, you were packed in like sardines. We took the boat back to WL. The boat person said there were 80,000 people in MK that night and that the year before it was the same and took people 3-4 hours just to get out of the parking lot. As far as not traveling with kids....my husband and I look forward to it.

Just know what your getting yourself into. I live in SoCal and Disneyland is a no go during the holidays. I'd assume WDW is similar.

Yup, one or two trips to walk around, see the decorations, watch fireworks, and have some chicken at Plaza Inn. Even with a Signature Plus AP and a sister with a Silver Main Gate Pass and 15 minutes from the Park....no thanks.
