$10/point Rent Fee?

I'm still new to most of this and really hope we never NEED to rent our points. However, I'm going to ask my Sister and BIL to join us at WDW in '04 and am preparing my presentation to explain how DVC works. I'm asking that they "rent" the point difference required for a 2BR vs our regular needs of a 1BR.

I've been seeing on here that most people use $10/point as the base to rent points for. It got me wondering, has that been the base $ since 1992, or has it increased over the years, and will it continue to increase over the years. I have no intention of trying to make money off of my family, but I am just curious what this $ is based on.

some people say they think $10/pt is fair based on calculations of their costs: i.e. the cost of dues + the "cost" of the points over the years based on their initial purchase price + any interest costs.

IMO, i also think the $10/pt is mainly dictated by the current CRO room rates and any discounts Disney is offering for their hotel rooms.

as for history of rental prices, i have no idea what people rented for back in the day. before internet message boards, i have no idea how you would find renters anyway.

I think originally it was nearer to $7-8 ( or more "deals" were struck at those levels even if the asking price was $10) , I think now those renting tend to stick to the $10 rate as they can be reasonably confident if they are patient they will get their price.

As far as your BIL is concerned, perhaps an alternate way of explaining the cost to him would be to say that a regular room at ( pick one of AS, PO, Poly, BC or all of the above) would cost him X and you can organise a room at whichever DVC resort which also has the added bonus of the livingroom and kitchen facilities of your 1 bed (and the benefits of pool hopping). I'm certain that it would be a substantial saving on similar rooms and probably cheaper than an AS. I would give them the option by saying you don't have to rent the extra bedroom and he could rent a regular room at a resort of his choice, but it does offer him a substantial saving if he wanted to take you up on the offer.

Thanks for the input! I know it will be a "no brainer" for them as far as savings go. I intend to link them up with sites so they can look at what Disney resorts go for. They have not been to WDW since their 23 yo was 7 (no MGM or AK) and I don't think they stayed on-site. I'm honestly more concerned, when they see what rooms go for, of them thinking I'm shaving off big $ for them, when that's not the case - it's just a really good deal! That's why I want back up history on where the $10/point comes from. Thanks for your help!
