10 Days in October: Argle-Bargle or Foofarah? UPDATED: POSTS #984 & 995!!!

WOW! What a TR! Very good reading - I've enjoyed it very much! Thank you so much for all of your food porn pics . . . my new keyboard should be here by Monday, since the old one had too much drool in it (which looked somewhat like mushroom "foam" aka loogies, but I digress . . . )

Glad that you found a way to bribe Grimace and let her still get her gambling groove on. See, a good daughter knows to do those things!

Seeing all your Harry Potter references made me sooooo happy - count me in as another fan! Have to ask - do you Snape is a FRIEND or a FOE, as scholastic is asking? Since the chances of us two dorks meeting IRL could be small (cue IASW music here), thought I could safely ask in cyberspace! :)

So much that I loved in your TR, can't mention them all, but count me in as another fan!

I am finally caught up with your trip report! Good stuff! :woohoo:

I'm a big fan of the HP books, ok well any book will do, too. I am seriously considering going back for a graduate degree in Library Science (yeah, apparently reading a ton of books makes it a science) so I could have any/all books at my fingertips at anytime. But on the Potter books, do you check out TheLeakyCauldron.com or Mugglenet.com? Lots of theory discussions about the books going on there. :wizard:

Much luck and good vibes sent your way for all of your tests!

Woo Hoo!!! Another new reader - yippee skippee!!!! :yay:

Thanks so much for reading and posting...sorry about the keyboard...;) But your description had me on the floor...:rotfl2:

If she's happy - the rest of us are happy...sort of. ;)

Hooray for HP fans, too! :yay:

That whole friend / foe thing has thrown me for a loop. Is it possible that he could be a friendly foe? No, that's not right... I've got it! He's a faux friend!!! :rotfl2:

Enough bad jokes - I'll stop now before my computer shuts off in protest. I think Snape was following Dumbledore's orders but I don't think he's Harry's friend - he's too complicated to fit into black or white...he's hundreds of shades of delicious gray. :thumbsup2

So much that I loved in your TR, can't mention them all, but count me in as another fan!

Thanks Twingle - I'm so glad to have you reading along! :flower3:

If I weren't so old and lazy I'd go for library science, too. :thumbsup2 And woohoo for yet another HP fan - we've got a choice group of DISers hanging on this thread! :thumbsup2

I usually hang out on Leaky's website; I'm a forum member but I mostly lurk...looking for news about book release dates and that kind of stuff.

Much luck and good vibes sent your way for all of your tests!

Thank you very much - I'll take all the luck I can get. :goodvibes

Tuesday, October 24th - What a Letdown, and I'm Not Referring to Pants.

Whew!

I gotta tell you, I'm feeling some performance pressure after your responses to the Brenda-No-Pants installment. I'm not sure I can deliver like that again...so, to distract you from the potential disappointment of an episode that has no reference to pants, I'd like to share a new drink recipe with you.

Jay is a great spontaneous mixologist - he just randomly creates a drink and it always tastes fabulous. Last Friday night I heard the capping of bottles and clinking of glasses; faster than you could say, "neat or on the rocks?" I was out of the computer room and in the kitchen, fluttering my eyelashes and cooing seductively, "Whatcha makin'?"

Silently he handed me a tumbler full of milk.

I raised one eyebrow and looked at the glass. I don't drink milk unless it comes with a healthy serving of chocolate dessert.

"Just drink it."

**Sigh** I took a tentative sip. Hey! This doesn't taste like milk at all...it tastes like a liquid Worther's Original Candy!!

"This is great! It tastes like a Worther's - what did you do?"

Jay smiled rather smugly before divulging his secret, which I share with you now...

"Milk, Vanille Royale, and Butterscotch Schnapps."

Damn!

This is one fine beverage, if you don't mind a sweet creamy drink that tastes like a bag of Worther's peed in your mouth. In fact, this drink is so good that I guarantee if you indulge in one while reading this trip report the remaining updates will be even funnier than the no-pants installment...not a guarantee.

*************************************************

After Grimace paid for her purchases at an uncomfortably silent MouseGear, we decided that spending some time with Ellen and the Universe of Energy would be a good way to beat the cold weather for a while. Jay and I were tempted to give Test Track a try, but the wind chill would have been too much for this fragile flower to bear. Besides, by the time we finished up with the world of energy (I wish we'd had the money to buy oil company stocks ten years ago when oil was $20 per barrel) the World Showcase would be open and the feasting could begin!!

I like to call this picture: What the Hell are You Doing?
DSC01413.jpg

I'd tell you what I was doing if I remembered...I think Plankton was trying to get my attention by pulling pins out of my hair. For this offense I banished him to a side pocket in Jay's cargo shorts for the duration of the ride. Jay and I always enjoy Universe of Energy - it's funny and educational and most importantly we're protected from the wind, because today my friends, this wind blows.

...

...

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Sorry, sorry, I'm sorry! I know I said no more bad jokes, but they come so naturally...what's a girl to do?

Grimace liked this attraction because she could sleep during the ride - no joke, the woman snoozed through most of it - and Jon liked it because it made him feel smart. Once the ride was finished Jay and I oh-so-casually sauntered over towards the World Showcase. It's time for lunch...spread out over four hours! Jay and Plankton were ready for some feasting, after all this is what we had come to WDW for; this is what my parents had come to WDW for. Alrighty then, let's eat!

DSC01414.jpg

It became painfully obvious that we were going to have to walk the parents through the F&W process - not that there really is a process, but Grimace and Jon weren't showing a lot of initiative on their own. One of the first booths that came into view as we entered the World Showcase near Mexico and the Odyssey was:

Argentina

Their menu board listed the following options:

Spicy Beef Empanadas; Grilled Beef Sirloin with Chimichurri Sauce; Marinated Strawberries with Basil.

We didn't order anything to drink here and we failed to take a picture of the booth - shameful oversights on both our parts that can only be explained by our joint effort to convince the parental unit to order something and join in the snacking good times.

Jay ordered the Spicy Beef Empanadas:
DSC01416.jpg

The first thing I noticed was that the menu read "Empanadas" which equates to plural in my grammar book, and yet there was only one item on the plate you see before you. The second thing I noticed was that this sample was hot in both good and bad ways. Its temperature was toasty warm - if I could have turned it into a hand-warmer for the rest of the afternoon I would have been happy indeed - and true to its name, this was verrrrrry spicy on the tongue, going down the esophagus, and sitting in the belly. Needless to say, Jason ate the rest of this because the last thing I needed while on vacation was a raging case of spicy butt.

For what it's worth, Jason really enjoyed this entry - he loves spicy food and I would assume that most folks who like spicy stuff would probably enjoy it as well.

At this point in the day we split off from the parental unit. Although now that I look back on it, the parental unit really split off from us. So much for my hazy idea of wandering the world showcase with my parents and Jay - snacking...laughing...drinking...just generally having a good time. Grimace wasn't interested in having a good time. She was cranky and cold and she didn't want to stand around and wait for us to finish eating our samples and she was appalled by the prices being charged by various festival booths. We reminded her that the dining plan snack credits would cover any food sample at any booth and that alcohol was the only item that had to be paid for out of pocket.

But it was all in vain.

"Come on, Jon," she said, turning her back on us and disappearing into the jungles of Mexico.

Jon just shrugged - he knows better than to try and fight her when she's in that mood. We reminded him that they needed to meet us at Restaurant Marrakesh by 3:15PM for our scheduled food and wine pairing, and then we watched him walk slowly after Grimace like a man destined for a date with the hangman's noose.

I think Grimace got her payback for depriving Jon of frolicking among the festival food booths - the lottery gods frowned on her this day and she didn't win any money on the prize pack we gave her. So there! ;)

Before we headed into Mexico we stopped at the Nuts About Peanuts display that the Peanut Advisory Board was hosting. According to the Festival Bible you could attend Peanut University and test your knowledge of the delicious and nutritious peanut. You could meet a peanut farmer on the weekends (wow, Jimmy Carter is going to be here? :lmao: ) and get your own peanut starter kit and even enjoy a bag of peanuts!

I wonder if the Peanut Advisory Board had a bag of Epi pens stashed somewhere close in case someone with a peanut allergy happened by?

Plankton liked this exhibit; he likes anything that makes him look smart. We titled this picture: It Is So an Accredited University!

Sounds like you could've used the milky wonder drink while you were eating the spicy butt inducing empanadas......:scared1:

Yet another great one! I am so enjoying this ride, Brenda! I am almost as excited as you are that you are going again this month! I can't stop using exclamation points! I hate when people overuse exclamation points! I think it shows a lack of intelligence...at least in my case anyway!

Now that I think about it "spicy butt" is not necessarily a bad name to be called.......:cutie:

Yet another great installment Brenda. :thumbsup2 I'm enjoying every word of it.:)

Now my nose AND my ears hurt, in addition to having strep throat that my daughter gave me. Why? you may ask? Because Brenda's comment about, and I quote, "spicy butt", made me snort my coffee so hard that not only did it come out my nose, it also puddled in my ears. Thanks so much for THAT. Not.

and by the way

I SEE GOOSE BUMBS ON YOUR LEGS.

Another great installment, Brenda!:rotfl: :thumbsup2

Okay, now I need to add another drink to my "I just have to try this" list. That just sounds so yummy!

That empanada looked good, but no one needs a spicy butt! I may have to steer DH away from that booth in October!:scared1:

You're getting me so excited for the F&W festivities! Okay, I have to go have a snack now. I'm starving!;)

OK, I have a serious question about your last installment - shocking, I know! No jokes or smart *ss remarks! So, do you think using your Disney Dining Plan credits at the Food & Wine Fest booths worked out great? Would you/are you doing it again? We haven't used the dining plan yet... I don't know why... I guess I'm still skeptical... we have the DDE card, and that saved us a bunch on our two trips last year, and we'll use it again in Oct. I'm trying to decide if I want to add the dining plan on, too. What do you think?

-Michelle

No... it's over ALREADY????? sadnesssssss... i'm in the depths of despair!!

Paige! How! Are! You! Doing?! I! Know! What! You! Mean! About! Excessive! Use! Of! Exclamation! Points!!!!!!!! :rotfl2:

OK, enough of that. And stop putting yourself down - you are obviously an intelligent woman even if you did get a little excited in that last post. ;)

Thanks for continuing to read and for all of your cyber-support and friendship. You know now that with a trip coming up for Jay and me in three weeks that you are likely to be reading my stuff all summer.

Now that I think about it "spicy butt" is not necessarily a bad name to be called.......:cutie:

Didn't I read somewhere that they were going to call one of the Spice Girls Spicy Butt until one of their corporate sponsors nixed it? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Yet another great installment Brenda. :thumbsup2 I'm enjoying every word of it.:)

Thanks Nancy- you're the best!

So sorry to hear about the strep throat - that's not fun at all, so I hope you and your DD feel better soon. As for snorting coffee...laughter is the best medicine but you have to be careful not to choke on it. ;)

And yes....those are definitely goosebumps. Since the Grimace is nowhere near the "internets" I can safely admit that I should have just purchased a pair of sweatpants and spent the afternoon touring the World Showcase in relatively fleecy comfort. But I'll never tell her that! :lmao:

Thanks again for reading! :goodvibes

I was very surprised at how good the Worther's drink turned out to be - the man's talented, no doubt about it. :thumbsup2

If someone in your party is sensitive to spicy food then try your best to steer them away from this offering. It had a real kick to it! And you said it - no one needs Spicy Butt!

Less than six months until F&W...not long now! :goodvibes Thanks for reading!

Hi Michelle...let's see if I can answer you in a way that makes sense. We liked having the snack options for F&W, but Jason and I really felt like the Dining Plan was too much food, especially if it's just the two of us. We never order two appetizers and two desserts at a TS location, and if we're eating CS we don't do dessert at all. We actually had 8 CS credits left on the DDP the morning that we left to go home...what a waste!

We have the DDE for our trip this month and in October and for the way that Jay and I typically eat we think this will end up saving us a lot more than the DDP and all that food we wouldn't eat anyway.

I hope that was a clear answer, but if you need me to try to un-muddy the swirling mess that is my response, why just ask away!

Thanks for stopping by - it's always good to hear from you! :goodvibes

No... it's over ALREADY????? sadnesssssss... i'm in the depths of despair!!

Lamagique, don't despair...I will be updating again tonight and hopefully it will be a longer and more entertaining installment than this one. Can you hang for another 6 hours or so?

Tuesday, October 24th - We Really Do Have More Fun on Our Own, Don't We?

***We interrupt this trip report for a real life moment from your author, who will understand completely if you choose to skip this portion of her post.***

I don't know that it's common to dedicate a trippie, or even a portion of a trippie, to another person, but I'd like to do that tonight. I apologize in advance if this is depressing, but it's something that I really feel a need to express. Thanks in advance for letting me share this, and for those of you who read something similar on the Shrubbery, I'm sorry you got a double-dose.

I am sad today... :sad1:

It has nothing to do with feeling cruddy, although that's par for the course lately. Being sad because I don't feel well would mean that I'm having a pity party and there's no reason for that because there are plenty of people out there who are in far worse shape than me. All things considered, I've got it pretty good.

No, I am sad because I miss my brother. Today would have been his 44th birthday, but he died from lung cancer six years ago.

He never made it to Disney World; not that he was a huge Disney fan, but he always wanted to go just to see what all the fuss was about. I sometimes feel guilty that Jay and I have been to WDW on three separate occassions just with his kids when it was something he should have been experiencing with them.

Then again, knowing my brother, he would have had an adverse reaction to all the pixie dust floating around WDW. Chronically cheerful people and places made his butt twitch - at least that's what he always said. ;)

Today being what it is, all the emotion that I usually keep carefully buried is painfully close to breaking through. I miss having a sibling to share Grimace with...I miss having pun-a-thons...I miss being told that I'm a snob because I think micro-brewery beers are better than Anheuser Busch products (they are!)...I miss having a big brother.

When I was growing up I wanted to be an only child. Now that I am, I'd give anything to change it back. I guess I am feeling sorry for myself after all, aren't I? Well, we can't have that...time to do what we do best in this family: laugh.

Mike, I love you man - this one is just for you:

Trivial Pursuit - Genus Edition, from a game first played between my brother and me in 1989...

Question: What is a Mexican Hairless?

...

...

...

Wait for it...

...

...

Answer: Bald.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Everyone in my family is a comedian.

***We now return you to Argle-Bargle or Foofarah***

Sad to say, but with the departure of my parents I feel oddly liberated. I hope for Jon's sake that Grimace will actually allow him to sample something, otherwise it could be a long afternoon for him. Jay and I, on the other hand, plan on sampling just enough to whet our appetities for the rest of the week. How much is "just enough?" We'll know when we get there, but if Jay's shorts split down the back when he sits we'll know that we've gone too far. ;)

Mexico is the next food booth that beckons to us and somehow we managed not to take a picture, again. It takes us a while to get our camera groove on

Food choices: Chilaquiles; Quesadilla con Chorizo y Pollo.

Beverage Choices: Conga Juice; L.A. Cetto Chardonnay; L.A. Cetto Petite Sirah; Dos Equis Beer.

How 'bout we try the Quesadilla con Chorizo y Pollo and wash it down with some Dos Equis?
DSC01418.jpg

Mmmmm...now this is my kind of sample. In my digestive world it's hard to find fault with cheese, chicken, and sausage rolled into a tortilla. This was very generously prepared; there was plenty of cheesie-chickie-sausagey goodness in each tasty bite. And Dos Equis (that's pronounced "Dose Eck-Eee" for those of you out there who are culturally challenged like me) is just a tasty tasty beer. Two thumbs up for Mexico, or there would have been if I hadn't been so cold that I didn't want to pull my hands out of my pockets.

This seems like a good time for us to wander back into the Aztec temple and pick out some hand-carved animals for our collection. An added bonus - it's going to be warm inside!!!

The wood carvings that Jay and I like so much are called Oaxacan Wood Animals - they are carvings of fantasy animals that parents tell their children live in the forest near their villages in Southwest Mexico. It's a charming form of folk art and we mark each WDW vacation by adding at least one more to our collection.

We purchased two this year because we felt like splurging.

First, a multi-colored armadillo because we've read that these hard-shelled fellows have been migrating north and we wanted to be the first family on the block to have one.
DSC01847.jpg

DSC01846.jpg

And...a very cool, very colorful lizard of some sort. Every time I see this I proclaim loudly, "I am the Lizard Queen!"

DSC01848.jpg

DSC01849.jpg

Before leaving the warmth of Mexico we wandered around the marketplace and commented on two things which we found both hilarious and a little sad:

1) Every family that came through while we were there stopped to try on a sombrero for a family photo-op but never actually bought anything;

2) They sell margarita mix and Tostitos in the Mexican marketplace but not Tequila or chocolate.

Feel free to talk amongst yourselves about these two fascinating observations, and once you're finished why don't you join us at the next food booth which, considering the weather, seems particularly fitting.

Have you guessed where we'll be? Here's a hint:
DSC01420.jpg

It's a country and an adjective, and it's all ours!

Food Choices: Porotos Granados; Saute'ed Corvina; Semolina Con Leche.

Beverage Choices: Santa Rita Wine Selection: Sauvignon Blanc 120; Reserve Chardonnay; Carmene're 120; Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jay and I ordered the Sautee'd Corvina and Semolina Con Leche with a three-finger shot of Sauvignon Blanc and a bottle of water to cleanse our palettes.
DSC01419.jpg

I just realized in this picture that the Corvina looks like bruschetta with all of that tomato on top of it, but it's actually a grilled fish with a mild tomato-ey salsa topping. This was excellent - a nice fish that didn't taste too fishy. The wine was also quite good - very light. And the semolina was good, but a bit granular...maybe that's how it was supposed to be, but my tongue kept wanting a smoother texture more along the lines of a custard. But overall, a very good stop on the Epcot food chain. I did however, annoy Jay for a while by constantly repeating a line from I am the Walrus: "Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel tower... " :lmao:

 For Brenda

Thanks Nancy. :flower3:

Sorry for bringing the mood down. But I'm going to bed soon and I was able to get a refill on the darvocet so I should sleep good tonight.

I'll update with more food and wine tomorrow as well as some of Plankton's adventures at Epcot. And Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is coming up, too!

first off: a hug for you my friend

Do you know how excited I was to see yet another post??? And as always, it fit the bill! I love looking at your food porn! And Latin food? OOOH WHEEEE, GIRL!!!! I'm hitting Muchos Gracias tomorrow. (our local hole in the wall, killer Mexican food with superb Margarita's to boot!!!):woohoo:

First thing's first:

 Because you need it. Because we all need it. Heck, here's a few more for good measure.

Ok. Now that we've got the Lovefest going on, I can be snarky again.
I don't know what scared me more: Worther's pee or Spicy Butt.
I love the Worther's candies, so I'm sure I'd like the drink, but the commentary just killed me. (Well, I guess I'm guilty of icky descriptions, too. I found myself telling people that the early June 1998 trip I took to WDW was like "being inside someone's mouth" from morning to night. Blecch.)

Loved the food porn redux. And the sombrero pics for most families are a must. I know quite a few people who do the Silly Hat pics for any hat their find. That saves them some serious dough yet all the fun of wearing the hats. Those wood animals are cool looking. But they're no giant tissue paper flowers. ;)

I know it's only 6:00 A.M. and I'm still half asleep, but I posted a hug for you last night (I wasn't drinking, so I know I did!!) and somehow this morning *poof* it's gone! So here are some more hugs for you. I'm so sorry about your brother.

And thank you for another great installment. The food and drink looks mahhhvelous! I can see that DH and I will have to pace ourselves in Oct. so we can manage to sample everything that suits our fancy!

Hope you have a great day.:flower3:

Okay, I'm going to cut myself a little slack, as it's early in the morning.;)
I posted on the OTHER thread!! At least I'm only half crazy. (There are people who would heartily debate that point though). Time for some coffee.:coffee:

Thinking of you Brenda - glad you told us the story. I'm sure you've prompted several of us to call our sibs today or treasure a little more the memories of the ones we've lost.

Thanks for sharing.

Big Hugs.
Leah
