10 Days in October: Argle-Bargle or Foofarah? UPDATED: POSTS #984 & 995!!!

So, if I may ask, what brings you to Stinktown, business or pleasure?

Um...neither, really...I'll be traveling with Cowboy Grimace, my mom and sister to visit some crazies up in Northern Illinois, otherwise known as family.

Wish him luck...or else my sister and I may leave CBG there where he can search for his counterpart!

Come back tomorrow night...can you hang on that long? ;)

You guys make me happy when you ask me to update - I feel like I'm doing something right. :thumbsup2

As for the May trip...I can't believe it's just over 6 weeks away. There is so much going on that I just hope neither Jay nor I self-destruct before we leave.

Have a good night - I will be updating tomorrow while the man works late. :goodvibes

We are quite impatient aren't we? I'm just amazed that you still have this all in your head after 6 months. I can't even remember what I ate for breakfast this morning let alone remember something from 6 months ago. Keep up the good work B. Looking forward to your next installment.popcorn::

Monday, October 23rd - Ya Know, If You Lightened Up a Bit You Might Actually Have a Good Time...

What does one do at the Animal Kingdom when the clock is ticking? Jason and I were on a tight schedule - we were meeting DISfriends for an early afternoon drink at the Grand Floridian about 1PM, so using WDW time we had to leave the AK by about 11AM. Two hours may seem excessive to you, but we had to stop at our villa and pick up a giftie for our friends and then we wanted to snack a bit at Epcot before hopping the monorail over to the GF.

Anyway, if you're ever in this predicament, allow me to suggest what you don't do: Don't ask your parents what they'd like to do. Just throw respect for your elders right out the window and squash any urge to compromise under the wheel of the Kilimanjaro Safari jeep. In the long run it's much kinder this way.

Why such an impolite and dare I say, rude, approach to WDW vacationing with the parental unit?

Because they'll say that whatever you want to do is just fine.

Until you suggest something.

Jay and I actually headed for the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail after the safari - this is the Animal Kingdom after all, let's go see some more animals. This time we can get up close and personal - we won't just see the wildlife we'll smell it, too!

**As an aside, am I the only one here who wants to call it the Panini Forest Exploration Trail? Mmmmmm...grilled animal sandwich of your choice at the trail's end...endangered species not eligible for eating.**

Well, Jon thought the exploration trail was a fine idea. As a man of science he is always open to new experiences and loves to learn new things, which must be difficult when you're smart enough to be a member of Mensa. Grimace, on the other hand, seems to have little or no interest in just about everything...including the exploration trail.

I think her attitude could best be summed up as this: "A walking tour...learning stuff...on vacation? Bah, that smacks of effort!"

I know, devoted friends and readers, you are probably just as confused right now as Jay and I were. We got up early and hit the Animal Kingdom during EMH so Grimace could see the animals before they settled in for their day-long siesta and now she wasn't interested in seeing them. But as far as she was concerned she had seen the animals and there was no reason to see them again, especially on foot.

Well, then how about we wander over to DinoLand? There are some rides over there that Jon would probably enjoy and that area of the park is pretty cool.

This suggestion meets with general approval and so we set out for the land of dinosaurs, being careful to skirt around Asia altogether since we have a pretty good idea that Grimace isn't interested in the Maharajah Jungle Trek or the Flights of Wonder.

I'm admittedly puzzled because I know there is nothing in DinoLand that Grimace will want to do. I ask her if she's tired, thirsty, or in need of a bathroom break (my god...I do sound like a parent, don't I?) in quick succession to which she replies, "I'm fine, stop bothering me."

Ouch.

I retreat to the amused safety of my Bubba (that's my nickname for Jason -don't ask. ;) ) who comforts me by saying, "You tried and you failed. The lesson is - never try."

My first attempt at "not trying" is Dinosaur, which Grimace would absolutely not enjoy. She was quite pleased to pull up a bench and let us travel back in time without her. As we were approaching the entrance to the ride we saw a woman trying to get her son to pose in front of the dinosaur out front and decided that it would be great to make Jon do the same.

DSC01333.jpg

Look! He's wearing the Mickey polo that Grimmie bought him the day before at DTD; isn't that cute?

I think this was the only ride during the week that we didn't purchase the photo from - it was nothing special so we actually exercised some restraint for a change. We did, however, make a generous contribution to the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund and in return received a fabulous button!

As we were leaving Dinosaur guess who walked right by us with a VIP guide?

Warren Brown and Mary Meyers!

That's right - the chefs from our bitterSweet Sundays! How cool is that? Getting their own VIP tour around the Animal Kingdom?

After Dinosaur we decided to ride Primeval Whirl, another attraction that Grimace would find less than attractive. Jay and I really like this ride - it's goofy but it's also a lot of fun in a don't-blow-chunks-on-your-neighbor kind of way. I've always wondered: if someone does get sick on this ride is the result Primeval Soup? :lmao:

I'm not sure that Jon enjoyed this ride or the bad jokes as much as Jay and I did, but he was a good sport - he always is.

At this point during our AK visit I insisted that the parents join us for It's Tough to be a Bug! Everyone loves this show...well, everyone but small children, nyctophobes, and Grimaces.

You can probably guess where this is headed, can't you? Well, to begin with she wasn't really interested in the Tree of Life. How can you not be utterly fascinated by this? The amount of work that went into the creation of this park icon...the incredible attention to detail...the fact that there is a theater in the tree's root system...how is that not worthy of an "oooh" followed by at least one "ahhhhh" ?

She didn't like the crowd or the fact that there were so many small children; she didn't like waiting to get into the theater and she didn't like the idea of seeing something in 3-D. Then when the show started she didn't like being gassed, squirted with water, "stung" by the wasps, or the bugs who crawled under her butt. That's right - she didn't like any part of the show - didn't see any humor in it at all.

This seems like a good time for us to part ways, don't you think?

We remind them that we have dinner reservations at Victoria & Albert's for 6:30PM - allow plenty of time for soaping up and being less plain before we leave for the GF tonight!

Coming soon: Food at Epcot, drinks at the Grand Floridian, and Plankton's Great Escape!

I retreat to the amused safety of my Bubba (that's my nickname for Jason -don't ask. ;) ) who comforts me by saying, "You tried and you failed. The lesson is - never try."

That is a very important life lesson! :rotfl2:

I have such good timing... I decide to wander on over and see what Brenda is up to, and lo and behold, and update! Whee!

I'm sorry your mom didn't want to check out the duo of trails, as I like to call them. I thought they were lots of fun. AK was the one park everyone in my family actually wanted to spend more time at than I had planned for. Then again, we are a bunch of nerds who enjoy learning on vacation!

Yet another fabulous update Brenda. Thanks for entertaining these "snowed-in" Wisconsinites.

(Chris....oooooh, you naughty, naughty boy!:lmao: )

Great update, Brenda! I guess I should prepare myself in case I don't hear any ooohs and aaahhhhs from the parents at the AK. I have the nagging feeling all I'm going to hear about is how hot it is!!! I've been warning them, and I've also dictated that there will be NO WHINING ON MY DISNEY TRIP!!!

We'll see. . . . .

Looking forward to more!

Darn! I was hoping that this episode was Plankton's Great Escape! :sad2:

:offtopic: B, I saw a commercial last night for the Harry Potter weekend on ABC Family. Don't forget to check it out! :happytv:

My DD and I love this ride!!! We call it the Hurl-a-Whirl!

Great installment; looking forward to more...

Panini - me too! - I even read it as panini when I was reading the trippie and had to go back to see what it is actually called:lmao:

Keep em coming:thumbsup2

It's amazing to me that even the Grimace could find nothing amusing and fun about the "Bug" 3D show. I thought you'd say that once you sat her down and made her watch it, she liked it. Oh, well. Install a slot machine in front of her seat next time, and maybe she'll be more enthusiastic.

**Cue Dr. Nick**

Hi everybody! Thank you all for reading! Since I have a few minutes left before I have to get back to work I thought I'd post a few comments. I'll try to update this evening, but I can't promise anything...the old Endo-bear has been back with a vengeance this week and I may just go home and go to bed with a percocet tucked under my pillow. We'll see how the rest of the day unfolds...

Good luck to you and Cowboy Grimace and the rest of your family. Hopefully by the time you all move through the area the weather will have returned to Spring.

Thank you Nancy dear! I took notes each day of the things that I wanted to include in the trippie so I do have something to fall back on. The pictures help too, because I tend to be very visual. And then I just make the rest up as I go. :lmao:

Actually Jay and I really like the trails, too. I guess Grimace was getting tired but she didn't want to say anything. I really thought AK was going to be the park that all of us really enjoyed together...bwhahahahahaha I guess she showed me!! ;)

And Jay and I are totally nerds - we even "learned" stuff on our honeymoon when we went to Gettysburg and Williamsburg. Nothing exotic for us!!

Thanks for continuing to read! Oh, and congrats on the trip to SSR next year!! :yay:

Great stuff once again! Can't wait to hear about V & A's!!

Thanks Paige! You will really like the V&A portion of my saga, which will take up multitudes of pages and make your tummy grumble.

To be fair it does look like Grimace is trying to smile in the back ground....;-)

Are you calling my mom a dinosaur? Just because she can't pump her own gas, or figure out how to set the VCR, or use the remote control, or... oh, I see your point. :lmao: :lmao:

Yet another fabulous update Brenda. Thanks for entertaining these "snowed-in" Wisconsinites.

Thanks again Nancy - glad I could help you out! You wanna see if we can start posting simultaneously again tonight? :lmao:

Thank you for reading! Good luck on your trip and mad props to you for telling them in advance that there is no whining allowed! I forgot to do that and look at what happened! :lmao:

Hey Jen - Plankton will be in the next installment; I won't make you wait much longer. And thanks for the heads up on the HP stuff... I can't wait for July!!

My DD and I love this ride!!! We call it the Hurl-a-Whirl!

Great installment; looking forward to more...

Denise

Thanks for reading and posting Denise! Hurl-a-Whirl...that's awesome!! :lmao: Can I steal that and use it on my hubby next month? I promise to give due credit to you and your DH. :thumbsup2

Panini - me too! - I even read it as panini when I was reading the trippie and had to go back to see what it is actually called:lmao:

Hi Karen! Something about the word "Pangani" just lends itself to the eye (at least my eye) reading it as Panini. Which probably explains why I always get so hungry at the Animal Kingdom. Thanks for continuing to read our goofy tale!

Kay, I think you must be channeling my husband! I swear he said the same thing once we were on our way back over to Epcot - "if there'd been a slot machine on the back of the seat in front of her she would never have left."

I'm still baffled as to how she couldn't find that show fun. I mean, we've never seen the movie that it's based upon but that doesn't matter. It's just as cute as can be...:confused3 I will file this away for future reference along with her other dislikes, which include sub-titled movies, classical music, meals that take longer than an hour to eat, and cleaning house.

Thanks for reading! :goodvibes

I wandered over here after posting in your "Shrubbery' thread because I discovered to my horrow, that I had not read your trip report that goes with your dining report! The shame! So I just finished reading, and I have comments.

First of all, I love it! Your personality and humor come through, I lost count of all the times I laughed! My daughter kept wandering over to see what was so funny. :rotfl2:

Second of all, this was just plain mean:

Hi Stacey! Thanks for reading (again!) Do you have a Culver's franchise in your neck of the woods? The butterburger is their signature "sandwich" which is a fresh, made to order grilled hamburger on a kaiser bun. They actually butter the top of the bun and lightly toast in on the grill just before serving it to customers. It's hot and tasty and glistening with a light, buttery sheen that you just know is going to end up on your hips after it deposits a few remnants in your arteries. Really good stuff, just eat them in moderation. They have great frozen custard, too, for when your endo really gets you down.

I grew up outside Chicago, lived in Indiana for a few years before moving to Vegas for 2 years. After frequent trips to Culver's when we lived in NW Indiana, we were totally deprived when we moved to Vegas (the one thing I swear they don't have). So of course, I was thrilled when we moved to St. Louis for a year. I had my butterburgers again! And the pumpkin milkshakes!
Homerdrool.jpg

I had not thought of these in a while since we moved back to Vegas 7 months ago, and after reading this, I want one and am totally deprived again!!! While we absolutly love living in Vegas, this is one of the few things missing! Do you think they'd overnight food to me? :lmao:

And, while I have your attention, what is up with the St. Louis pizza? We had such a hard time getting a good pizza, one without that nasty 'provelle' cheese. We hated it! :scared:
I do miss the zoo. And my beloved farmer's market (we lived by Lafayette park.).:sad1:

And, when we went to WDW for my daughter's 4th birthday, we bought her that exact same hat that you tried on! :)
And again, just for petty revenge for making me crave Culver's, I'm going to meanly add that I love Tolberone, and I have the best in-laws!! :p ;)

Anyway, thanks for reading my rambling, and I can't wait to read the rest!! :flower3::flower3:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Brenda, I have been summarizing a 750 page deposition for the past three days, and sneaking reads of your trippie was what kept me sane! Now I've reached the end and there is no trippie left. Now I have to devote my complete attention to my effing summary! :scared:

(But, like a good Canadian, I have long since raided the Firm's fridge and am now sipping on a beer while I deal with this junk. Girl's gotta get some satisfaction somewhere... :rolleyes1 )

Keep up the good work, Brenda! And my offer for a tux for Plankton still stands! :)

try TYPING a 750-page deposition! :scared1: pardon me. i'm a court reporter and i just had to throw that in. :)

sorry for semi-hijacking your TR, brenda!

*hug* I worked as a legal assistant (and often de facto unofficial court reporter when stenographers were "too expensive" to hire) before becoming an attorney, so I feel your pain!!

Uh... topic? *singsongy voice* Brenda, you so funny! :flower3:

Gah! Pangani does sound like panini, and I always think of Panera. But
I never do order the panini there. I'm addicted to the crispani pizzas now.

And then I read a post about Culver's. This has to stop, as I'm about 40
minutes away from the closest one. :(
