Hidely-ho, fellow DISers!! I'm just now getting around to an actual trip report for our October WDW visit...I did the food report months ago and then my creative train derailed. And I don't mean it jumped the tracks...this baby plunged off a suspension bridge similar to the one spanning the Royal Gorge in Colorado and fell all the way into Middle Earth before being spewed back out by some Orcs. ;)

Anyway, I'm a long-time lurker on this section of the DIS but I've never had a chance to write anything about a WDW trip, so thanks in advance for sharing the adventure with me and my goofy family.

The lunatics starring in this tale:

Oybolshoi (Brenda -37): I dream, I plan, I spend...and spend, and spend, and spend. I enjoy the Travel Channel so much my husband is thinking of getting a parental control to prevent my watching it while he's not around to stem the ever-rising tide of, "Why don't we go here; Wouldn't that be romantic; and the deadly but highly effective: I've always wanted to do that, haven't you?" Thanks to certain medications and health issues that came to a head during 2006, my family and I were able to experience WDW while riding a wild roller coaster of hormonal imbalances...exciting details to follow! ;)

Jason (DH - 36): Goes with the flow and never complains about all the luggage we end up bringing with us even though he's the one who has to carry it all. The best husband a girl could hope for - probably deserves a Congressional Medal of Honor after putting up with me and my hormones this year. Laid back, agreeable, intelligent, handsome...he doesn't mind spending the college fund on vacations because our cat isn't interested in higher education.

Kathy (my mom - 62): Says she likes Disney but can't understand how anyone could stay at WDW for more than four days. Back in the early 70s when we lived in Kissimmee she was actually a secretary in Disney's corporate offices. Today she's a slot jockey with a lady-luck chip on her shoulder the size of Royal Gorge and the attention span of a 5-year old.

Jon (my step-dad - 68): Recently retired, too smart for his own good, all around super-nice guy - the only father I've really ever had. He has a Phd in Biology and Chemistry and loves to travel as long as said travel doesn't always involve a casino.

A bit of background...we'd been planning this trip since October 2005 and convinced my parents to join us as our guests for a week at the Beach Club Villas (we're DVC owners there). We were very excited to introduce them to the F&W Festival and to give them a chance to try some Disney Dining, including Victoria & Albert's. However, knowing my parents, I convinced Jason that we needed some time without them and booked us into Saratoga Springs (we're also owners here) for a few nights before the parental unit was scheduled to join us. A little alone time is always a good thing. :thumbsup2

As for me...2006 was the year of endometriosis with a baaaad attitude... I had surgery in January...took 6 months of Lupron...had surgery again early in September this time with partial ovarian removal (both sides). I mention this because you will read references to the many and varied pills I took with me on this trip...I'm not a junkie, I swear! (denial is always the first sign - ;) )

The weeks leading up to our departure were full...recovering from the second laparoscopy was hard, work was busier than it should have been thanks to chronic under-staffing, there was playoff baseball to be watched (Go Cardinals!), and all the travel details had to be finalized by yours truly in between doses of percocet and darvocet. Worrying is something that comes naturally to me...when I wasn't worrying about the weather (where have all the hurricanes gone?) I was worrying about dining reservations (what if no one likes my choices?) and my parents (will they end up in divorce court after this trip?). And on top of it all, nibbling at the back of my mind, was one stubborn question that refused to go away: how on earth does a doctor perform a laparoscopy on a woman who has an "outie" for a belly-button? :rotfl2:

Thank goodness for a close friend who is married to a doctor! She asked him that question for me and he answered it, too, after he spent about fifteen minutes laughing hysterically at my medical ignorance. The short answer, by the way, is that it doesn't matter.

So, what's on tap for this trip?

The dates: October 18 - October 28, 2006

Thanks for reading - Day 1 will be coming soon to a thread near you!

Looking forward to reading all about your trip!!!

Brenda-
I'm so glad you're writing a TR! Since we already know all about your Disney dining reviews, I can't wait to read about your park adventures! WooHoo! :woohoo: This one is gonna be good! :thumbsup2

-Michelle

Thanks Michelle! I need to get back over to yours and play catch up. :goodvibes

For some reason the picture I posted last night doesn't want to show up as an image this morning, so I'm going to try it in this post instead to test it.

Now it works...honestly I have the baddest computer karma of anyone I know.

So, as previously posted... can you spot the family member who was dubbed The Grimace on this trip? :lmao:

And no cheating by those of you who read the food report and already know!! ;)

SUPER SUBSCRIBING!
Brenda, I loved your dining review and am very happy that you are trippin' it up here! Looking forward to your take of the "steam trains tour"..my boyfriend is begging me to book that for us in June..i personally would rather book a massage, but hey..gotta compromise!
Great start :)

Hi Brenda you've got me hooked. I haven't has a chance to read your food report yet but now that you got me hooked I think I'll go check that out too.

this baby plunged off a suspension bridge similar to the one spanning the Royal Gorge in Colorado and fell all the way into Middle Earth before being spewed back out by some Orcs.

Did it have to fight the Balrog on the way? ;)

I'm so appy to see this report right now! I'm just starting to plan my trip for this coming October, so I'm hungry for info! (Also, I think we may have the same mother.)

Oh Brenda, I was going to act all smart until I read that I couldn't cheat!! Darn it anyway! Told you I'd be here. Front and Center!!!:cheer2:

Yey B!

I'm so happy that you finally started posting this report. I look forward to all your reports! Seems like forever ago I read your dining one. Oh well, on with the show! :goodvibes

Ooo oooo I know who the Grimace is!!

Btw, I'm dying to know what a Foofarah is!

Yay, another Brenda trip report!
BTW.....I think you guys should DEFINATELY go on the 9/27/08 7-day alternate western. You know, for posterity.
Just sayin' :rolleyes1

Hey everybody! I will be posting an update later this morning - had to go out of town for work yesterday so there was no time for the DIS...:(

A few quick responses and then I'll get to work:

MA pigletfan - thanks so much! I promise you that this TR will have both massages and trains to help you make a more informed decision for your upcoming trip. ;)

WDW Poly Princess - :rotfl: Luckily for me Gandalf took care of that nasty Balrog right before my train derailed, otherwise my TR would read like this: Hi, my name is Brenda and I'm married to a man named Jason. We went to WDW for ten days in October and my parents joined us for a while. We did a lot of stuff and ate a lot of food - it was fun. I wish we were there right now. Thanks for reading. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Seriously, if you have any questions about WDW in October ask away - I'll try to help in any way I can.

Cheryl & Nancy - fellow Konked Kruisers - thanks for joining in the fun! Well, I hope it's going to be fun...I may have misplaced my funny bone - I hope Jason didn't mistake it for a soup bone.

Erica!!!! How nice to hear from you and belated Happy Birthday. Everyone, if you are looking for some great trip reports check out the links in Zweihund's signature - she's an awesome storyteller!

You and Lionel and maybe Grumpydude and his family on the same cruise next year? Oh dear, I may have to have a talk with my husband...that would be the cruise to end all cruises!

In the short term I think we should try to hook up at the F&W Festival this year - if hooking up with people you've never really met who walk around theme parks with plush planktons wearting miniature mickey ears doesn't frighten you. We want to try to go to Party for the Senses on 10/13/07...have you guys ever been to one of those?

Jennifer!! I was just reading Kimberly's honeymoon report the other day - sounds like you guys all had such a great time! I'm glad you're popping in here, too, and I'll try not to disappoint. A foofarah can be two different things: frilly stuff or finery; or a disturbance over something very minor.

Gregory, KimAshton, Bee, and lennon2004 - thanks for reading so far!

See you soon! :goodvibes

Wednesday, October 18th: The Adventure Begins!

A wee bit more background information... yesterday was my birthday - October 17th, that is. How did we celebrate? The residents at the retirement castle have got nothing on us!

J&B both worked for half a day: that's bad.
Husband changed ringtone on my cell phone without telling me and then called me at work so I could hear my birthday surprise - the song the animatronic animals from Wall E. Weasel's sang to Bart Simpson at his birthday party! You're the birthday, You're the birthday, You're the birthday boy or girl!: that's workplace-disrupting, tear-inducing, gigglefest-good!!
We both went to my second post-op office visit with my doctor: that's good.
Incisions healing nicely: that's good.
Endometriomas appear to be reforming already: that's bad.
Doctor is retiring from practice: that's super-weepy bad.
Took last shot of Lupron in the hip: this is both good and bad for many reasons that you really don't care about.
Cried all the way home (it's my birthday and I'll cry if I want to) - husband stopped at Culvers and bought me a double butterburger with cheese and a mochaccino-ey type dessert to make me feel better: this is good for all sorts of bad reasons.
Watched the Cardinals and Mets play Game 5 of the NLCS - I told my co-workers that the birds wouldn't dare lose on my birthday. The good guys win Game 5 and are headed back to NY with a 3 games to 2 lead in the series: That's hotdog eating, beer drinking, world series dreaming good!
Laundry and packing are finished by midnight - we're only going to get about 4.5 hours of sleep but we're headed for Disney in the morning: That's supercalifragilistic-good!!! :thumbsup2

*******************************************************************************************************

Wednesday morning is terribly cold...it's a hard freeze, again. This is not typical of St. Louis in the middle of October - at least not since global warming changed the US weather patterns and moved real winter about two hundred miles north of STL. I decide to suffer the cold and throw a hoodie over my comfy travel gear - there's no way I'm hauling a coat down to Florida. Jason AKA The Human Furnace doesn't even wear a jacket - what a stud!

We're out of the house by 6AM after trying to reassure our cat Handsome Pete that we will be back. I think he's happy to know that he won't be seeing my mom while we're gone - she usually takes care of him for us and she's really good to him but he always ends up smelling like her perfume - for days. There is nothing more mortifying to a manly cat-dog than having his fur reek of granny sachet.

Oh, before I forget....we have a travel mascot now! This is the first time that Jason and I brought a mascot along with us on a trip and we have many diabolical plans for him. Our mascot also has many diabolical plans of his own as you will see further along in the story.

Well, first of all I must apologize for the break in my posts...apparently the latest DIS-upgrade means that if I edit a post with a picture in it or try to add a picture to an edited post the image won't show up as anything other than a link. I don't know if anyone else is having this problem or if it's just me but it's really annoying. I edit my posts all the time because I find typing errors or I decide to change the phrasing, blah blah blah... I guess I'm just going to have to try to do things a little differently.

***Thank you for your attention to this brief complaint cleverly disguised as a public service announcement. We now return you to the story which hasn't even made it to the airport yet.***

Where was I? Oh, yeah, travel mascots. Here is a picture of the perfect mascot for my husband and me:
DSC01047.jpg

Watch out WDW - Sheldon J. Plankton is coming to getcha! He was quite pleased with the "A" boarding passes we managed to obtain while I was "working" on my birthday.

We live about 30 miles from Lambert International Airport, but during rush-hour(s) traffic it can take an excruciating length of time getting anywhere from our house. Luckily we were ahead of most of the traffic this morning and there were no accidents, oil spills, or wild animal prison-breaks from the zoo to slow us down.

However, once we made it to our off-site parking garage of choice we discovered that everyone else in St. Louis was apparently leaving this stinkhole along with us and parking spaces were at a premium. We ended up parking on the roof for crying out loud - that's never happened to us before. I guess it was a good thing that we used Jason's car - the 8-year old camry with a cracked windshield, hail damage, and missing hubcap. Oh yeah, we were stylin! ;)

Once we made it down to the main level of the garage with all of our luggage (I wish I'd thought to take a picture of the luggage - collectively I think it may have been the size of Rhode Island) we had to fight our way onto a shuttle bus to get over to Lambert's East Terminal. The shuttle was packed with business travelers and seniors - Jay and I were the only people there who appeared to be bound for "fun" travel. The best part about the shuttle ride was the music that the driver was playing...usually the drivers keep it pretty low-key but not this guy.

Now, I must preface this with a brief explanation - Jason and I are not "up" on a lot of popular culture. A long time ago we used to be with it. And then they changed what "it" is. Now what we're with isn't "it" and what is "it" seems weird and scary to us (I took that from Grandpa Simpson, but it sums us up perfectly). :lmao:

I did recognize this song, however, and I started cracking up. Picture 15 suburban passengers crammed into an airport shuttle bus with a ton of luggage listening to Fergie sing London Bridge at eardrum shattering levels. :rotfl2:

Once Jason heard the chorus for the first time he started laughing, too. Sing along with me, everyone:

How come everytime you come around,
My London, London bridge, wanna go down like,
London, London, London, wanna go down like,
London, London, London, we goin’ down like…

We gave the driver a double tip just for providing so much early morning entertainment. I wish you all could have seen the looks on the faces of our fellow passengers. :lmao: :lmao:

Just wanted to say I was enjoying your TR. I read the dining review and have been waiting patiently for the TR to appear. And here it is!

We made it through the check-in process and handed the luggage over to security in no time at all. Even better, the airport had all the screening gates open in the East Terminal so we cruised through the metal detection, no-liquid-gel-plastic-chapstick-lotion-makeup-hope-they-don't-make-me-toss-my-contacts screening process pretty quickly. There were a few raised eyebrows and brief questions when I opened my backpack to show them my prescriptions.

Screener picks up a big white plastic bottle that the manufacturer ships the prescription in and shakes it, listening to the pills rattle around inside. "What's this?"

"Pentasa for Crohns disease - eight pills a day."

Screener picks up the next bottle. "And this?"

"Darvocet - mild pain reliever. See the label?"

Next bottle, "This?"

"Percocet - stronger pain reliever. Just had surgery about 5 weeks ago."

Screener grunts and pulls out Advil, Advil PM, Naproxen, Aleve Cold & Sinus, and Remifemin (an over-the-counter herbal supplement that I was taking to combat the side effects of the Lupron injections, one of which was really bad, frequent hot flashes) before looking at me with something like amazement. He shakes his head and dumps it all back in my pack before sending it through the x-ray machine. "You look awfully young to be falling apart; have a nice trip."

As back-handed compliments go, that's not bad.

We made it to the gate by 7AM and there was nothing to do but wait until they let us board, which wasn't too long. Even though we were in the A group, there was a ton of pre-boarding so we weren't able to get seats with extra leg-room. It was an uncomfortable flight for me and I guess if I'd really wanted to I would have asked if I could have pre-boarded but I didn't really know if they'd believe me or just think that I was full of crap. And I didn't feel like displaying my personal pharmacy for a second time that morning just to convince someone that I needed a seat with extra leg-room so that I could stretch out a bit.

We ended up sitting over the wing and I gave Jason the window seat. Now that was generous of me, wasn't it? Here you go honey, a great view of the wing and an engine - hope you enjoy! :lmao:

A really nice older gentleman sat next to me and I chatted with him off and on during the flight - he had been visiting his daughter and his new / first grandchild in Arkansas and was on a connecting flight back home to Florida. He used to have a part-time job at Epcot working at one of the coffee stands near the world showcase. He told me all kinds of fun stories about working at the park and helped take my mind off the fact that I don't really like to fly - defying the laws of nature and gravity make me nervous.

I would share his stories with you if I remembered the details, but when drink service showed up I took a darvocet and that kind of blurred the next few hours. I can't speak for anyone else, but my advice is not to take a narcotic once you're at 35,000 feet. Dizziness and nausea in cramped spaces do not make pleasant travel companions. Luckily Jason and I have a Southwest game we play when we fly and that helped distract me for a while. We call this game The Amazing Kreskin Loves Peanuts and Jason is actually quite good at it. When the vacuum sealed peanut snackpack arrives Jason fondles it for a moment and then states confidently the number of peanuts it contains. He then opens the packet and methodically eats and counts the salty little nubbins one after the other - I record the results for posterity. He then repeats the process with my peanut snackpack (I don't eat peanuts - that would result in an intestinal disaster the other 120 or so passengers would never forget).

His first prediction: 19.5 peanuts
Actual result: 18 peanuts

Second prediction: 21 peanuts
Actual result: 19.5 peanuts

Wow! I'm impressed and Jason is salty. The remainder of the flight is uneventful and we are on the ground by 11:20AM and at the baggage carousel by 11:30AM. Our driver from Florida Tours was already waiting for us and he helped collect all of our luggage and then we were on our way to Saratoga Springs and Downtown Disney!

Some of you may be wondering, "Why didn't you use Disney's Magical Express?"

There are a few reasons...first of all, Jason and I are impatient jerks. We want to get our stuff and then get to the hotel without waiting on fifty other people to do the same. We also like having our luggage with us - I especially am quite attached to my luggage and I like knowing where it is at all times. And we love the peace and quiet of that towncar ride from the airport over to WDW - it's just us and the driver and we like it that way. :thumbsup2

Although we bought an ownership interest in Saratoga Springs back in 2003 we'd not yet had a chance to stay at the property. We were very excited to finally have a chance to see our new vacation home. It's very pretty but it's also massive! There are so many villas and when we first pulled in I was worried that we were going to end up in a less than desirable location (I had no idea, by the way, what a poor location at SSR might be). The check-in process was fairly quick and our 1-bedroom villa was all ready. And then the front desk clerk tried to explain where our villa was located and she might as well have been speaking in tongues. She gave up finally and told us to go back outside to bell services and wait for someone to take us over to the villa.

O-kaaaaaaaaay. :confused3

We waited about 15 minutes and then a fun little golf cart showed up with a really nice young guy from Illinois. The luggage joined us in the cart and we were off - turns out he's normally a Cubs fan, but he was pulling for the Cardinals to womp the Mets in the National League Championship Series. I must explain to anyone reading this who resides on either coast - in the baseball world those of us in the Midwest really have an inferiority complex. We've bought into the idea that ESPN (Eastcoast Sports Propaganda Network) knows what's best and that the only teams American baseball fans really want to watch are the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Giants. Cardinal fans are a little prickly about this - the Cardinals are to the National League what the Yankees are to the American League: no team in the National League comes close to matching the success of the Redbirds. The other thing that all the experts seem to forget that really rubs us the wrong way - The Cardinals are the second winningest franchise in MLB history. That's right - in more than 100 years of organized play, only the Yankees have been more successful than us. I think the Cardinals may be the Rodney Dangerfield of MLB! :lmao:

Anyway, when the playoffs roll around, us Midwestern fans tend to unite to root against the media darlings, as evidenced by our bell services golf-cart buddy 'cause it's a cold day in hell when a Cubs fan will admit he wants the Cardinals to win a baseball game! ;)

Enough baseball. Our vacation villa ended up being in Congress Park which was a very good location. The room overlooked a pathway between our building and another, but there was also a partial view of the lake and DTD West Side from our balcony. We could actually walk to the DTD Marketplace from our villa in about 10-15 minutes depending on how fast we were moving. We were also only one building removed from the "quiet" pool and we were very pleased about that.

A few pictures now to break up all this text - your eyes probably needed a break thousands of words ago! Just a reminder - we had a 1-bedroom vacation villa.

DSC01050.jpg

We thought the villa was very pretty - it was super clean and the air conditioning worked like a charm, The only thing we noticed is that the 1-bedroom villas at SSR are smaller than the 1-bedroom villas at the Beach Club. Not a big deal, but we noticied.

We put on some cooler clothing and then headed over to DTD for some lunch. We couldn't believe how hot it was - I expect Florida to be warm in October but this was summer-time heat and humidty. It really was like a reverse hot flash...cold and chills in Missouri followed by intense almost unbearable heat in Florida. Hey, no complaints here...I'll take a hot Florida over sitting in a cube-farm with no windows any day! :thumbsup2

We wanted to try Earl of Sandwich for lunch but the place was packed so we just grabbed a couple of hot dogs and some bottled water and ate outside overlooking the lake. Then we went looking around the marketplace for antenna balls before heading back to our room.

Yes, you read that correctly - antenna balls. It was part of our diabolical plan. Take a look...
DSC01059.jpg

Evil Plan Z is working perfectly!

And now, we're off to the Dolphin (I think) for some couples time at the Mandara Spa.

We've been spoiled by staying at the BCV for the last few years and being able to rely on our feet to get us many places. Jay and I learned the hard way these first couple of days that WDW transportation is not as effecient as we would all probably like it to be. We decided to walk back to the Marketplace and catch a bus there over to the Dolphin. This woked fine but it was hot and crowded and slow and 45-minutes later we finally made it to the Dolphin and all I could do was tell Jay that I hoped I'd picked the right hotel because I suddenly couldn't remember if the Mandara Spa was in the Swan or the Dolphin (or Swolphin as I've seen around here!). There was some kind of convention taking place and we wandered around for a few minutes desperately trying to figure out where we were supposed to be. Well, when all else fails, take a picture!

DSC01063.jpg

This is the fountain in the Dolphin's lobby - isn't it pretty?

I finally decided to bother the Concierge. I approached the desk, hoping that I didn't smell too sweaty, and asked if she could point me in the direction of the spa.

Not only did this lovely lady give us great directions, but she asked us what kind of treatment we had scheduled and then whipped out a business card, scribbled something on it, and handed it over to me.

20% off couples retreat, Concierge X

Wow! It must be our lucky day because 20% off a $300 treatment is a nice chunk of change. I thanked her effusively and she just smiled. "My pleasure. I hope you enjoy the rest of your convention stay."

Uh-oh, time for a fast recovery..."I'm sure we will; come on sweetie or we'll be late for our appointment." :rolleyes1

Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures of this spa and I wish we had because it's the most visually stunning spa I've ever been inside of. There are actually two different waiting areas - both of which are co-ed. The first one is located just outside the changing rooms and is decorated to look like an indoor temple. There are treatment rooms here as well. Then there is the second waiting area which is much larger and even has a balcony that looks out over the walkway between the Dolphin and the Swan. I really don't have the words to do justice to the interior of this place - if you're really interested I'd suggest bopping over to allears and checking out Deb's pictures. She has some great shots.

The first part of our treatment was a shared hydrotherapy bath in a big whirlpool tub in a private treatment room for about 30 minutes or so. Then we each had a massage in another private treatment room. Jay really enjoyed his massage but I was too knotted up to get as much enjoyment from mine as I usually do. It was nice but not nearly as relaxing as I had hoped it would be.

We were invited to enjoy the relaxation room or second waiting room as long as we wanted. There are all kinds of lounge chairs and sofas and cushions to relax on and there is hot tea or citrus water to drink. We had an 8PM reservation for dinner at the House of Blues, however, and considering the transportation issues we thought we'd better get moving. It took an hour to get back to our villa and I was getting cranky. There was just enough time to clean up before heading over to HoB - it was a long walk for this tired and cranky old Crohn but somehow I made it. The food was pretty good and we really enjoyed the atmosphere - you can read my dining report linked in my signature if you'd like more detailed information about our experience there.

We decided to turn in early and get some sleep - we had a day at Epcot planned for tomorrow and there was no way we could ignore Game 7 tomorrow night...we needed our rest! ;)

Thanks for reading...Day 2 will be coming soon!

:rotfl2: Oh my, I have not read anything so very funny in a long time! Your writing style makes me laugh, and your group sounds like a blast to travel with. I can only imagine the reaction of the screeners when they pulled out all your medications. Reminds me of the screener I had at LAX in February 2001 (pre 9-11)- I set the machine off, and the woman just said "Oh, go on through". These days, I'd probably get sic'd by a viscious-loking German shepherd and be escorted out by armed guards!

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to you next installments! Great work!
