10/4/08-Buccaneers Take the West! Cruiser List in Post #1

Hello Everyone,

We just returned from Boston last night. DH is still there on business. He will return Friday and then leave again on Sunday for White Sands, NM. He won't return until July 2nd  Two weeks with just me and the boys. :scared1:

We had a great time on our trip. We went to a Red Sox game, the New England Aquarium, the Museum of Science, the Freedom Trail, and the Skywalk. We drove into New Hampshire after church Sunday, and drove to Newport, RI, on Monday. We toured a couple of the mansions there. It was beautiful. I want to go back and stay a few days there. We stayed with my parents last night. I have a 3 day workshop at school this week, and it was easier to stay so I wouldn't have to take the boys over this morniing.

When I went to get the mail today, I had a present in the mail box. We received our planning documents:cool1: It was nice to have that waiting for me when we returned.

WolfeinTn, are you originally from TN? If so, where and what year did you graduate from high school? I graduated with a guy named Wolf from Oakland in 1985. Just wondering if you could be the same person.

My friend's niece is doing well. Apparently the kidnappers were very nice to her. They let her listen to music, play video games and got her fast food when she wanted it. When she was returned, they had a big party for her. The family is trying to get refugee status so they can come to the US. It is very difficult for families to leave the country. They have a very strict government. Apparently kidnappings like this happen very frequently. The poverty level here is 90%. My friend was so appreciative of all of the prayers.

I do have another prayer request of everyone. My mother is having surgery tomorrow to have pins removed from her hip. Then in July, she is going to have her knee removed (due to a constant infection) and have her leg fused, so she will have a straight leg the rest of her life. She has had 8-9 operations on this knee. Three summers ago, she had to be in a cast and have her already replaced knee removed and go with out a knee for a few weeks, trying to get rid of a staff infection. Apparently, there is still some type of infection in the knee. The only way to get rid of it is to take out the artificial knee and to fuse the bones together. My mother is rather young, only 65. She has had health problems since I was 19. This is really hitting her hard. She has cried until she can cry no more. I don't think it has really hit me yet. I told her as long as she got better, it doesn't matter if she can't bend her knee. Being an only child, my mother and I are very close.

Thank you for listening to me. It is good to know that prayers are being sent worldwide for her. I will let you know how things go tomorrow. Everyone have a great Thursday.

The power of prayer is great. I can understand your mother feeling overwhelmed. Please know that I will keep her in my prayers.

I was wondering if you had looked into any of the alternative medicine to seek solutions. I was so sick I could not get out of bed. Three MD's said they did not know what to do. I thought I was going to end up on disability or dead. I began to do my own reseach and made major changes to my diet and have been able to regain my health. Western medicine dose not always have the answers at least they did not for me. Lois

Denise - you make me proud. It takes a special courage to stand-up in those instances and do what is right. I hope that it all works out best for the children involved. Bravo!

Gena - prayers for you and your mom.

Take care everyone and have a good Thursday. One more day until the weekend. Campers (complete with sweaty, smelly, smokey, sandy dirty laundry) will be home tomorrow so the washer/dryer will get a good workout!

Wow Denise! That must have been so horrible to witness. I thank God for my normal, almost boring, upbringing. I'm so proud of you!

Gena, I'll be praying for you and your mom. I had spinal fusion in 2006. I know that it really works on your mind when you can no longer do the things you feel that you should be able to do. I never thought I would be so limited at 37. Your mom will have a difficult time adjusting. I just try to cling to the promise in Jeremiah 29:11 -

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

I try to focus on friends that are in so much worse shape than I am. It is very easy to slip into a "pity party" mind set. It is something you just have to rise above daily.

Please let your mom know that she is in our prayers.

Ginger

Gena - Ginger is right - you must keep your Mom's spirits up. I am a firm believer in mind over matter. And as a care giver - keep your spirits up too.

Hi guys! This applies to our cruisers that have more than one cabin under the Dissers' FE list. Please post how many FE's you will have come cruise time. If you don't yet, please post that as well. Some of our Dissers are starting to plan or have already planned their FE gifts and we want everyone with an FE to get a gift. I understand that some of us may have one cabin for the grownups and one for the children. Please state this as well. It doesn't matter if you don't know which cabin the children will be in at this point. That's okay.

At this point we have 25 cabins listed and we need to make sure if they will all have an FE outside their stateroom doors.

If you want to be a part of the FE giving/getting, please feel free to join us! The more the merrier! Also let us know if you have 2 families in the stateroom. We want to make sure each family gets a gift. We don't want to leave anyone out!

Hey Everyone,

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement and prayers. Mom came through her surgery today just fine. She is in a lot of pain. The doctor gave her the 3 screws that were in her hip. They were as long as my index finger! I could not believe they were in her. I understand now why she was in pain.

My boys are staying with her tomorrow while Dad is at work. They are the best therapy she could have. They can help her and keep an eye on her ( I am in the middle of a workshop and cannot go). They are the only grandchildren and are the best medicine she could get. She loves them so much.

I will keep everyone updated on how she does. Hopefully, the pain in her hip that she has had will now go away as she heals from the surgery.

Take care everyone. Thanks again for everything and have a great Friday.

Denise-
We will have a FE for both rooms. Thanks for putting this all together.

Talking about camps. DS13 leaves on monday and he is so excited. DS10 goes in July and is also going to Centri--Kid. This will be the first year any of ours have gone to this one, so really know nothing aboot it. but he is excited also.

Counting down the days till we can make reservations. Getting so excited..

Off to work, have a great day.

Denise: We will have a FE for each of the three cabins. I'm still unsure if my sis will be giving gifts. I'll probably pick up extra and have her give me money if she wants to participate. :thumbsup2

Kim, my DS10 (on Sunday) is coming home from Centri-Kid today. He sounds like he has had a great time, even with a trip to the clinic for strep throat. :( Last night he did say he was homesick though. Five days is a long time for kids of that age to be together. He is supposed to come home around four today. :cool1: I'll post an update from him if I can remember.

Happy Friday everyone! We are trying to make a decision about whether or not to get a puppy. I've never had an inside dog, so it is a huge decision. :scared1:

Denise: I know you said 25 cabins, but do you have the breakdown of kids and adults? And could a link be added to the first page (sorry... forgot who had all the links!) to the FE list?

Ginger: Unless you have already picked a puppy out or have someone giving you one, I would wait until after the cruise to get one. It is sometimes very hard to find a good place to leave a dog when you go on a long vacation. With an older dog, you can trust them in the house and have a pet sitter check them a couple times a day. With a puppy... they will chew everything and pee everywhere while you go to dinner! I would hate to see what they can do if they were alone for any stretch of time! Mine chewed the handle off of my recliner!

Tucker goes to camp on the 29th. He is getting so excited!

Puppies are wonderful but we just got a chocolate lab but he is two years old. I am done with potty training and house breaking :rotfl2: ! Both are equally challenging as far as I am concerned (but I had boys in both puppies and children, suppose there is a corelation?). I love dogs though and Walter is a real sweetie. I will take a picture and get it posted so you can see him.

This is Star.

DSC00875.jpg

She is a 3 1/2 yr old black lab/chow mix. She was TERRIBLE about chewing things! She chewed the heel off 1 of my boots, the coffee table leg almost in 1/2, the recliner handle, the corners of the stairs and baseboards... it was awful! She was 3 months when we got her, and it took until 9 months to break her. But now she is a good dog with the exception of leaving the yard. We have a $250 underground fence, and she has decided she doesn't care if she gets shocked! :furious:

We have 3 dogs and one cat!! Our youngest is a Border collie mix and no kidding she was eating the house. While outside if she gets bored she will chew on the shake shingles (not sure of correct spelling). She has eating them off of one whole corner of the house. Given that she is a border collie I am sure this will be on going although it has gotten much better now that we think she is at least two years.

She is very lovable and it is not hard to forgive her for all she as ingested. We did adopt her one week before we left for two weeks. The shelter almost did not allow us to take her. However, we had a good friend that keeps our dogs while we are gone and they get better care when they are with her. It is very hard to find good care that is reasonable in cost. We can never leave ours at home alone as I will never trust any of them. That being said most of the time I don't regret adopting any of them.

Denise - if you give me the post number that you want to maintain the list on, I will figure out how to add a link in post 4 to that particular post

Love, Love, LOVE the dog pictures. And if you have a cat - feel free to add their pic as well. Sort of :offtopic: all the way around but fun. I think it is so much fun to meet, greet and get to know other DISer's and in case you didn't know - I am honored and tickled pink that I am sailing with all of you!

Denise- yes, we have 2 FE. There will be 3 Adults in each room, I'll be doing extra to make up for the second room. Still trying to decide what to do. Are we going to list what we're bring or is it going to be a suprise?

Does anyone know if we can bring candy in our carry on bag? I made some candy bar wrappers for my SIL birthday, and I don't want the chocolate bars in my checked luggage. What a mess that would be!!!:scared1: Pam

I think the FE would be more fun if the gifts were a surprise. The days are pretty evenly distributed, with several different gifts each day. Since I doubt we will change days to "spread things out" we might as well be surprised each day!

I don't know why you couldn't bring candy in your carry-on. I would stick it in the top of your cooler if you have one. I know the rules say no ice in the cooler, but we are going to put a couple packs of blue ice in our cooler. Hopefully the drinks won't warm up too much, and the candy won't melt!
