The luggage restrictions really cheese me off - in part for the same reason you just mentioned. I know that when I purchased our tickets for this coming October, AA still had a two bag per person limit with a surcharge beginning with bag three. And if they try to stick us come this Fall I am going to raise a very vocal stink.
I think two bags per person is totally appropriate, especially if you're taking a longer trip. And with the stupid restrictions that have been placed on carry-on baggage travelers are now effectively screwed.
Personally, Jay and I would rather pay more for the actual ticket rather than get reamed for having a third bag (and by that I mean three checked bags between the two of us, which is typically what we do for a 10-15 day trip).
I say anyone who bought PRIOR to the announcement (not the effective date) should be allowed a variance on it. It is not fair to charge them now when they could have chose a different carrier who didn't have such a restriction.
That said, I think AirTran (don't think Midwest has implemented yet) charges $10 for the first extra bag. I will pay that if it means I can bring my tux and Suz' dresses. To rent the tux would be close to $100, so it would be a savings.
As for carry-ons, that is one of the best benefits with AirTran. You can put a 21" wheeled carry-on in the long way in the overhead bins. Plenty of storage with them.
