We are sadly back from our 10/2 4 night Fantasy sailing :( Our cruise party was myself, my husband and our two little boys (newly 2 & 4.5). We were in a family verandah cabin midship on Deck 9.

BOARDING: Boarding and testing was so easy (except the actual act of testing our 2 year old, lol). There was literally no one else in the parking garage getting tested when we arrived. It was about 45 minutes from the time we pulled up to the time we boarded. PAT 1:15, on the ship at 2:00.

CABIN 9596: We LOVED this cabin. The extended cabin had so much room that we were able to leave the beds out for the boys all the time for naps/rests because we felt like we had so much room. Our 2 year old still sleeps in a crib at home but refuses to sleep in a pack and play (climbs out immediately) so we went with the lower bunk bed with a railing. Disney only lets you order a bed rail for passengers 3 and older on the website so we ordered it under my older son. Our boys occasionally take showers at home so they loved the small circle tub combo and loved the adjustable shower head. We moved it down for them to make the shower just their size! We typically do not use the balcony frequently but love the light and option to get outside. The cabin was spotless and had absolutely TONS of storage!

DINING: We had main seating for dinner and our rotation was RAAE. We pre-ordered a highchair for our youngest and it was set-up at our table. There were also nice plastic kids cups with very secure lids on the tables already for the boys. We did not have these great cups on our last sailing in 2019. Food was very good. Same old menus.

COVID: Our sailing was 1,400 passengers. It was amazing and that’s honestly why we sailed. All protocols were followed by everyone we saw on the ship. Our youngest is newly 2 and still learning to wear a mask. We had him wear the mask as much as he would tolerate (so not a lot) but no one ever asked us to have him put on his mask when he was not wearing one. The only time that someone asked was in the kid’s club open house and we were able to get him to comply for a short time and then I took him out when he would no longer tolerate the mask. Our 4.5 year old is a professional mask wear and did amazing.

The ship was completely spotless. I typically find cruise ships to be the cleanest form of travel anyways but I was very impressed at how completely spotless the ship was. They are fully staffed even though they have a lower passenger count for there was Staff everywhere cleaning all of the time.

My biggest concern going on this trip was dining. We were very well spaces in the dining room, no sharing tables (thank goodness, I hate this) and there were still even some empty tables. I am very concerned that dining will be way too crowded if they continue to increase capacities. I’ve the 3 seating rumor and while I don’t know what seating would actually work for us I do think it would be good for crowds.

CASTAWAY: We had a double dip at Castaway. It was heaven! The island was empty. TONS of chairs and umbrellas available on both family beaches. Everything was open and fully staffed. We spent time at the first family beach and then took turns taking our older son to Pelican Plunge. He was basically the only there and he and my husband did the slides probably 50 times over the two days there. The food was good. They will need to open more stations if they are going to increase capacity. On our first day I had to wait about 15 minutes and there was only a few people ahead of me.

We feel extremely lucky to have visited twice with such low capacity. Out little kids were able to enjoy the whole beach and all the activities because they were not overrun with big kids. If it had been a normal sailing we would probably not have been able to let them on the wooden play structure or pelican plunge. Out 2 year old is a massive dare devil and he climbed up on the wooden play structure and jumped off about a 1000 times and our kids were the only ones playing on it!

SHOWS/ACTIVITIES: On the first few 4 night sailings they had 3 theater shows (Aladdin, Frozen and Believe). On our sailing it was reduced to two and it was Frozen and Believe. We were pretty disappointed about this. However, the two shows we did get to see were excellent and both our boys sat through both shows. The shows were at 8:45 which was a little too late for us so we were definitely pushing the bedtime boundaries to attend the shows. We also saw the Halloween deck party show. This was basically just each character dancing alone on stage for one Halloween song. However, our kids are so young they loved it and danced the whole time. I am sure older kids were probably not impressed. We did actually make it to stay up for the fireworks. I don’t know how my kids stayed awake but they did and we watched an obstructed view from our balcony. They were very short but good! Also so many good character interactions! They really took their time to interact with the kids. We got the photo package and got a ton of good family spots. I also loved the characters on the path to the beach at castaway! I walked there and back both days with our youngest in the stroller and we got some great interactions and photos!

CRUISING WITH A TODDLER: I won’t lie. This is a challenge. He isn’t big enough to do some stuff. He doesn’t like being confined to the stroller and he can’t go in the pools. HOWEVER, we love taking the kids at this age because they LOVE the Disney magic and seeing the characters. The splash pad is definitely big enough to keep him busy and there were a few other activities such as crafts and Sarge Says that we didn’t realize we could take him to and will take him to on our next cruise. The littles can also go to the kid’s club open houses which were for several hours each day and run around (with your supervision) to their hearts content. The dining staff was amazing and did tricks and talked to the boys a ton and kept him in apple juice and ice cream which he doesn’t get a lot of at home. Also, if you are so inclined, do not under estimate the power of downloading Disney Plus content onto your iPad for use during dinner. We actually only needed to use our on 2/4 nights so that was pretty impressive! We do not want to cruise without our kids (I mean we do but we don’t have that kind of help!) and we definitely want to cruise as much as we can so along they come no matter their age!

IS DISNEY WORTH IT (cost wise)? I would definitely say that if you are not a total Disney person then it is still worth it when your kids are young. Every single thing is geared towards children and the staff is excellent with the kids and accommodating their needs. It makes traveling with kids a lot less stressful. I don’t think we will always cruise Disney but we will until our kids are much older.

WHERE ARE ALL THE DRINKS?!: Our biggest complaint about Disney is the total lack of opportunities to get a drink, specifically a nice glass of wine, if you are NOT in the adults only area. They have a lobby bar but it has an extremely limited wine list with only a handful of wines. Do people sailing with kids not like drinks? This has confused us greatly on both of our Disney cruises. I also greatly dislike that there is not a pool bar in the pool area. It is not always convenient to have a waiter bring you a drink especially when you are with kids that move around a lot! I also do not want to have to separate from my family to go get drinks for my husband and I. We did do this every night before dinner but it was a big pain.
I am happy to try and answer any questions. We did not do any adults only activities, dining, bars, etc.

Just so you know, you did not miss the Aladdin show. We were on the 9/25 sailing and they only had Believe and Frozen.

Thank you for this! It was so helpful! We will be sailing with my 2 year old and 6 month old in a couple of weeks. Some people look at us like we are crazy when we tell them what we are going to be doing. Granted I’ve never done a Disney Cruise with a baby and a toddler, but to me, a Disney cruise with little ones makes a lot of sense. Still part of me is like if we realize we’ve made a terrible mistake once we are out at sea there’s no going back! Your post reassures me that it will be great :)

You will have a great time! People also look at us like we are crazy for traveling with our littles! Sometimes I feel crazy but in 6 trips with my oldest and coming up on our 3rd trip with our 2 yr old I have never once wished that we didn’t go! What people don’t understand is that we realize that our kids won’t remember these experiences but we will remember them forever!

We will be traveling with our newly 2 year old granddaughter and trying to find a place to get her COVID test. Did you use Inspire? Our 3 day window starts on Thanksgiving.

we ordered the inspire test and did it on day 3 and took it to UPS that day. Test results came back in about 36 hours. That will be tricky with day 3 being on a holiday! We also did a local free Covid testing center for back up and paid for expedited results. We wanted to make sure we had negative tests before we left home because we were flying in. Our free Covid testing center in our town is open 7 days a week so maybe if you have a resource like that they will have some holiday hours. The inspire test is a super pointy stick that my kids HATED! The one at the port is like a soft a-tip so that one went way better except my kids were very skeptical since they thought it would be pointy like the home one we did!

Thanks for the info. I forgot how late the shows are with early dining. I wonder if we could go to the early show and then do room service for the 1 or 2 shows we'd want to see. Can you clear something for us? I thought the kids had to have a COVID test 72 hours prior to boarding. Is that in addition to the one we you arrived for boarding? Or do you only need to have one when you board? Also, can you share what kind of character interactions you had?

Yes, the kids do have to have a covid test 72 hours prior to boarding. We ordered the inspire mail-in tests and did a local expedited test. We were flying in from Chicago so I did not want to fly down without have a negative covid test incase the inspire tests took longer.

The early show time is 5:45. That would have been perfect but we love the dining room experience so we were not willing to give that up but your plan sounds like something great to try!

We had the BEST character interactions. They do a few different things. They do some things call "appear and wave" where you visited with the characters from a social distance but they (of their handlers depending on the character) talk to the kids and then you can take selfies, etc. There were never a lot of people around for these so our kids got lots of time with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto on multiple days. We also had these same interactions with the princess on multiple days before dinner at 5:15.

They also do photo opps with the ships photographers where you can take off your make. You still get to talk with the characters but they move this along a tiny bit quicker because there were usually some (not a lot) of people waiting.

They also have lots of characters walking around the ship. So we had a little chat and phots with Donald and Daisy one day right at our pool chairs and another day my husband and son saw Hook And Smee at the Aqua Lab.

Lastly, they have the characters doing all kinds of fun beach screens on the path from the ship to the family beach on castaway if you walk. My absolute favorite pictures form the cruise are with Donald and Mickey and their cool beach jeep with the ship in the background. I think this location is near the tram stop so you wouldnt necessarily have to walk.

We did multiple of these interactions everyday. Our kids loved it!

Thanks so much! We're not sailing until February so I guess things can change between now and then but it all sounds good.

Thank you for the thorough review and I'm so glad to hear you had a great time! We'll be sailing with our littles in January and can't wait!

Yeah! We were in 9592! We were the ones with the decorated door with the lollipops…I think I remember you… if it was you lol! This was our 3rd cruise with DCL since they’ve started back up and my 18th in total and I agree it is great to have extra space and not feel so crowded.. the difference between our cruise and our B2B in the Dream was maybe 300 more people and it was crazy how much busier it felt to us, so I am not looking forward to 100% capacity again… I am glad you guys had a fun cruise!!

We are really debating sailing with 4 kids (7,6,3, and 1) with the reduced people on the ship. What options were there for childcare for the kids, if any? I suppose there's no chance of an adults only meal? Not a huge deal, just want to set the expectations before the trip and not be disappointed. The idea of Castaway Cay being near empty in comparison to other times is incredibly appealing though.

My kids LOVED your door decorations! You probably heard us stopped outside your door a lot!
My 4 yr old found our cabin every time by finding your first, lol! We had such a great time we cancelled our Jan cruise and booked the 11/1 Dream sailing to try to ensure another low capacity cruise! We have also bought magnets for our door this time! :)

The nursery is not open so you guys will be hanging with your 1 yr old for the whole cruise. Even my older son (4.5) isn’t ready to stay alone in the kids club yet so we had both kids with us the whole cruise which we knew in advance going

We like the dining bc the servers are great and the kids stay reasonably occupied and we shamelessly use iPads to try and have a few peaceful adult only moments at the dinner table.
Casataway was def. A highlight and with such low capacity we were also able to relax in the calm shallow water while the kids played around us.
We Travel a lot without grandparents, help or childcare options (or did ore-Covid) and we just try to do our best to create occupied or calm moments were the kids are happy and we can drink some wine!

Thanks for your review! We were on the same sailing. It was crazy with the reduced capacity we felt like we had the ship to ourselves. It will be hard to go back to full capacity now that we’ve been spoiled!

We were on the Dream at end of September and Castaway was so empty!! At one point my husband was the only one in the water at the entire family beach. So many empty chairs everywhere.

Thanks for your report! I’m taking my 15m old, will be newly 2 when we go as well. Are they not allowed in the pools because they’re not potty trained? Can they go into the pool if they are potty trained? Or is it an age restriction? Also, is there a splash pad play area for the young ones?

thank you x

It’s a potty training restriction not an age restriction. No unpottytrained kids or swim diapers in the pool. All ships have at least one splash area

the Dream and Fantasy have a very large splash area called Nemo’s reef which is great for littles 2 and under. It’s good for bigger kids too but lots of space for the littles to run around. The age limit is 8. I wish it were younger bc there can be unsupervised bigger kids running around and using the baby slide and pushing the littles out of the way.We actually an unsupervised 3-4 yr on our last sailing. I watched the same little girl the whole time and never once saw her parents. She was pushing the little kids (my newly 2 yr old) and I was getting really mad. I try not to address other peoples kids bc I wouldn’t want a stranger talking to my kids but I also watch my kids.
