1 week to go, but now they raise the alert

I woke up this morning all excited. I told my sons that one week from today we'd be in Disneyland! I went about my day in great Christmas/Disney spirits. Now I just sat down at the computer and read the terrorism alert has been raised. I want to scream!!! What is wrong with these people, haven't they done enough damage. I live in NJ and live with the reminder of 9/11 everytime I see the NY skyline. I know families who lost loved ones. and it breaks my heart everytime I see them.

How do you get on a plane with your children and fly across the country with this on your mind? All I want is a little Disney Magic - a vacation we've been planning for months. I'm waiting for the phone to ring and my ex to say he's not letting his sons go on a plane. I can't say I'd blame him - I wouldn't want my kids to go with him under these circumstances either. I know I sound like a big spoiled brat but I had to vent!!!

You don't sound like a spoiled brat to me cuz I am going through the exact same thing!!! At the end of the week I am supposed to fly across the country too and I have to sit here and think--it's one thing to put myself in that situation but I'm going to put my child in that situation too. I'm going to go, but not without guilt about the situation I am putting my family in.

How do you fly with the raised terrorism alert, the same way you do any other time. Just keep your ears and eyes open, and tell if you see anything suspitious. We can't stop living because if we cower from this threat. They win and we can't let that happen. We are flying in Jan with my 80+ mother and 80+ father-in-law

I'm feeling scared myself. We leave on 1-3 for a couple days at Disneyland and then a cruise. I'm scared. But we flew a few months after 9-11, and everything was fine. It just seems odd - but maybe it's just because of the holidays. Right?
I know we will all have magical times.... Just get me on Soaring and I'll be happy and relaxed.

Today, I woke up still nervous, but I'm determined to feel better about this whole alert thing. After watching the news last night, those terrorists better think twice about hitting us now. We're going to have the best security at the airports so that should make us feel safer than if the alert hadn't gone up. Let's not let those bad guys get into our heads - the are winning if they do! Let's enjoy the holidays and the magic of Disneyland the way it's supposed to be.

I am a Pre K teacher and today is our holiday party. I'm going into school with a big smile on my face and I'm going to immerse myself into the wonder of Christmas through the eyes of a 5 year old! If that doesn't get me into the spirit - nothing will!

Thanks for your words of encouragement, but even more so thanks for giving so much of yourselves - to either serve our country or to have a child who is serving our country. These are difficult times which call for great courage, from those of you (and your children) in the position to serve. You inspire me to take that small step of getting onto that airplane on Saturday. It's the least I can do to show those madmen we're not going to cower in fear.

OK, that's one fear down, can anyone help with the earthquakes?

I just returned from DL and was surprised that a couple of people claimed to have felt the 6.5 near Paso Robles. We didn't. The epicenter was pretty far from DL. But I was at the Anaheim Hilton on Oct. 1, 1987 (don't hold me to the date) when a magnitude 7 hit LA. It was the most effective wake-up call I've ever experienced. A handful of people died in that one, mainly for having been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I actually think that DL is a pretty safe place to be in a quake. There are no 100 year old brick buildings there, and everything undergoes lots of safety checks. The Oct. 87 Whittier Quake hit before opening, but when we did go to the park, every ride was undergoing safety checks before opening. Having just gone through a sizeable quake, and knowing that aftershocks were very likely added a little thrill factor to some of the rides though, but in my heart I knew I was safe.

The elevated alert went into effect midway through our visit this past week. The increase in security around the parkes and resorts was noticable, but had no impact on our enjoyment of our vacation. We flew out of Orange County and everything went very smoothly, although it did take a little longer checking in. I imagine LAX is a bit more hectic, so make sure to be patient and give yourself time. I trusted that I was safe and I know you and your children will be as well.

Thanks CalGal! I'm packing today and there's no turning back! My sister who is traveling with us is excited about feeling a tremor- go figure... And now mud slides - you folks in CA have had a rough year with the fires and everthing.

I wonder what we are going to encounter when we get to LAX. Would they be checking passengers getting off the plane like they are doing from the France flights? I just saw on the news that all of the jerks involved in 9/11 lived in NJ for some time - I think I'll set up my own security screening at the airplane door - lol!

Anyway, we're off to get us some magic that we desperately need! We'll be in the parks on Sunday and Monday, and then heading over to Pasedena area for the parade. Forcast for possible rain on Monday, but nothing is going to stop us once we get that far!
