DVD Burners are really inexpensive now. get one that does Dual Layer and you can fit 8.5 gigs worth of pictures on one disc. It's worth it for archiving.

I need to look into those as well, that would be just enough room to hold 1600 photos for me. My current DVD drive is single layer for 4.7GB. Can you recommend a good one? Preferrably external so I can use it on the laptop as well.

Watch out for the dual layer recordable media. They are more prone to failure and difficulty in reading, even in its own burner.

Considering the price of the blanks and the (lack of) reliability issues, I'd recommend to burn no more than 4.3 Gb on each disc (safe area for DVD-/+R) or 600 Mb on each CD-R (also the safe area of a CD-R)

There's some concern that CD's and DVD's that aren't "Gold" will begin to degrade after about five years, and within ten years will show significant degradation to media stored on them. Also never write on the media what's on it, instead write on the case or sleeve you are storing the media in.

I use portable hard drives. I fill one then label it with a Sharpie as to the year and it's contents. I have dual copies of my work on portable hard drives, one kept at my home, the other stored offsite.

assuming you are saving them, because.... you want to save them, do not use cheap media. The best is rewriteable cd's and dvd's. They are like comparing the XT to the 20d. Just a little better build quality. Store them out of the sun, in a relatively climate controlled area. A closet will do fine compared to a book shelf that gets heated up as the sun passes by during the day or a basement that can be damp in summer... etc.

All my favorites are uploaded to smugmug. They have redundant servers to protect against failures. Unlimited file storage. and a nice service where you may order DVD of everything you have on their system.

They have three levels, according to their website -- each with unlimited photo storage.

How is the data transfer rate? is it a slow as photobucket or faster a'la FTP? I can't imagine how long it'll take uploading 100 Gb worth of data if it's slow.

Holy cowpies! My record number of photos at WDW is 557 in a 6-day trip.

I'm only up to 4,092 TOTAL WDW pics for 15 years of trips. Of course, that doesn't take into account the 2 rolls of 24 that the developer LOST from my first trip (I was livid - "NO I DON'T WANT ANOTHER FREE ROLL OF YOUR CHEAP CRAPPY FILM!")

I guess I'm not in the storage problem range yet. All of my pics from 1999 till present, including scans of my 35mm pics, is only 2.3gb, so it still fits easily on one single layer DVD. Of course, I have multiple backups - synced copies on both of my computers, a copy online, and periodic DVD backups.

Eventually, though, I'll be in the same boat as you guys and have more pics than I can conveniently store on my hard drive, so I'll refer back to this thread and others like it for ideas.

well, each concert I'm hired to do will have about 2Gb of data (minimum) because I take pictures from the initial meet, rehearsals, sound check, final rehearsal with lighting cues etc, the concert and after-concert party (or sometimes, parties)... and with tonloads of crews wanted to have their picture taken with the likes of Mariah Carey, Dave Koz, Patti LaBelle, Gloria Estefan, sometimes 4Gb is not enough to cover a concert. I don't do a lot of concert. Maybe two a year, but when I say a concert, it's really an event, not just the concert for one or two songs.

I've done no more than a dozen of big concerts (and several mini ones) and they accupy about 50 Gb of data, plus my personal files since 1992 (about 30 Gb) and some weddings and product shots that I really like. All in all, they are about 100 Gb. 97.6 Gb to be exact.

I have hit a 100 meg limit per upload in the past. But that is with the generic windows transfer. The boards have a hack so you can do more and maybe faster. I have not looked into the details of it yet. Not realy a hack but just a different routine. Smug charges by bandwidth, I wonder if uploads are counted...?

the 100 meg took about 30 minutes on dsl...

great customer support there as well. In the past my emailed tech ? have been answered in under a half hour!

Thanks for all the info. Although my pics are not professional by any means, and don't mean much to anyone but me, I want to make sure I have a back up and a duplicate stored elsewhere! I also have uploaded many of my photos to photobucket, but as I resize so many to post on Disboard, I want to make sure that I always have my original! I currently been using CDs, and still have the original on my computers (Right now spread out over three!!)

Like I said in another post - all this picture taking is a full time job - that I don't get paid for!!!

Yes, I love sharing my photos with others, and I really enjoy coming home from an outing with my camera and sitting down and looking through them!

It's just cutting into my sleep time!

I was looking forward to some more time at EPCOT tonight to see the Grass Roots, but DD came home from school with a migraine today. No fun for Mommy (or her for that matter). It will have to wait until Friday, for Cinco de Mayo and Paul Revere and the Raiders!

I have about 120 GB of photos, my wife probably has another 30 GB. To upload those would take a while, assuming my ISP didn't give me an e-smack and tell me to stop using so much bandwidth.

I still have concerns about online sites too, if they go out of business or get bought the agreement you have with them may not mean much. In a bankruptcy the customer is usually the last to get any money back. A lot of the storage sites may rent their drive space instead of owning it, adding to the chain of uncertainty.

My current method (hard drive + CD/DVD + external) is far from fault proof and I would like another level of security, even though my photos are only valuable to me. My next idea might be another external drive, in a firesafe in the garage.

I by know means have my photos on Photobucket as a storage method, rather a method for viewing. Most of my close friends and family do not live locally, so this is a great way to share our adventures!!! I don't upload everything I take, only the "best of the best" (to me!) or the ones that have special meaning. I rarely print photos, unless I am doing something special with them, so the thought of losing some of the memories that DD and I have collected would be heartbreaking!

A better option is stored offsite entirely. I have a backup of all my work stored at a friends house in NJ. I travel up that way 1-2 times a month, and d/l anything new since the last backup onto the portable hard drive I keep there.

If I'm reading this correctly you mean cd-rw and dvd- rw. If you are you may want to reconsider and use cd-r and dvd-r.

The r seems to be more stable than the rw.
