*1/3 New Trip Report* Pole Dancing and Food Porn

Shannon, have you been to the doctor? I hope you feel better soon. Morgan and Lily better be taking good care of you!

I've been wondering where you've been hiding! Wish it were a happier reason.

Love that view, but hate that you can't even sit comfortably!! That stinks, Shannon!!

Get better soon!

Thanks everybody. It's weird. When it's bad, it's excruciating; but other times, it's just a twinge. I've never dealt with back problems before, so I don't know if that's normal or not.

Anyway, back to Cali Grill.

We ordered a bottle of Selbach-Oster Riesling which was absolutely amazing wine. Everyone (well everyone over 21) enjoyed it.

Appetizers:

Granmouse got the Triple Cheese flatbread - Pecorino, Asiago, and Provolone with Sun-dried Tomato and Arugula Pesto* $11.00
DSC_0078.jpg

She said it was excellent.

Sam got the "BLT" flatbread- with Heirloom Tomatoes, Applewood Bacon, Provolone, Crisp Romaine, and Lemon Mayonnaise $14.00
DSC_0077.jpg

He wasn't that impressed with this. He said it was mostly a lettuce flavor when he ate it and wished they had made it thinking of each bite.

Grammie & Morgan shared the California Roll - jumbo lump crab with avocado and cucumber $20
DSC_0080.jpg

(That picture is just Grammie's part.)
Morgan said it was "amazing, the best ever"
Grammie said it was good, but nothing special. She couldn't get past the price of it (even though we weren't paying it), and kept reminding us that she had "a $20 California roll" for the rest of the trip.

I had the Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli - with sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, shiitake mushrooms and basil* $13
DSC_0079.jpg

YUM!!! I would have licked the plate if I could have. I completely understand why people talk about this dish. It was so incredibly delicious!

Entrees:
Granmouse had the Oak-fired Filet of Beef - with Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes, Roasted Baby Zucchini, and Teriyaki Barbecue $44
DSC_0082.jpg

She said it was a good, well-cooked piece of meat. I think she enjoyed it, but it didn't live up to the standard set earlier by Le Cellier.

Morgan had the kids filet.
DSC_0081.jpg

It was a tender piece of meat and he enjoyed it. He, of course, didn't touch the potatoes, but he did eat one of the green beans!

Sam had the Seared Ostrich Filet - with Buttery Potato Puree, Wild Mushrooms, Globe Carrots, Fig and Honeyed Port Reduction $36
DSC_0083.jpg

He decided to be adventurous! It was a dark meat, like beef, but had a different taste. I don't really know how to describe it.

Grammie had the Pan-roasted Florida Black Grouper Filet - with "Stir-fry" Vegetables, Sticky Rice, Ginger-Soy-Hijiki Broth $35
DSC_0086.jpg

She said the fish was good, but rice was soaking in the sweet & sour sauce, which was way too sweet. They served it in a bowl, so the fish/rice couldn't get away from the incredible amount of sauce. I think if it had been served on a plate she would have enjoyed it more because she could have been in control of how much of the sauce she used.

Lily had the kids' cheese pizza.
DSC_0085.jpg

And, I my friends had heaven on a plate, also known as Grilled Pork Tenderloin - with goat cheese polenta, button mushrooms and zinfandel glaze $32
DSC_0084.jpg

This is, without a doubt, the best entree I've ever eaten. The polenta was amazing, rich and thick and creamy. The pork was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth. The sauce was incredible. The sage on top put the perfect little bit of crisp in each bite. I gotta tell y'all~~ heaven!!

After the entrees, we had a little time before the fireworks started, so we didn't order our dessert right away. So, of course, a toast and a photo session!

Coming up next:
fireworks, a lost boy, and dessert

The lights were dimmed, and they announced that the fireworks were coming on. We were on the opposite side of the restaurant so we hurried over to the lounge area. Sam went out on the observation walk and Morgan rushed after him. I followed Lily over to the family (with little girl) that she had met earlier and watched the fireworks from the lounge. It is an amazing view, although the angle makes it look as though the show is over Space Mountain at times rather than over the castle.

When Lily & I got back to the table we discovered Morgan with a tear-stained face and Grammie. Apparently, Morgan couldn't find Sam in the rush of people on the observation deck and got lost. He finally decided that we would go back to the table and headed back there. Mom got tired of standing so she went back to the table and find him there crying. He thought we were lost forever, poor baby!

After the lights came back up, we got our dessert.

Sam and Grammie both got the Bananas and Caramel - Crispy Baked Phyllo Squares Layered with Banana, Caramel, Mascarpone Mousse, and Caramelized Banana $11
DSC_0220.jpg

Sam said it had light flavors.
Grammie was less than complimentary. "The only nice thing Ican say is the bananas were fresh and tasted like bananas, but beyond that there's not much to say. It tasted like instant pudding. Maybe it was something really fancy and my palate isn't sophisticated enough for it, but it tasted like instant pudding and I would prefer not to eat it again."

Granmouse got Sweet Celebration - Fall Apple Cobbler, Walnut-Oatmeal Streusel, Calvados Ice Cream, and Apple Caramel Drizzle $11
DSC_0219.jpg

She said it was okay. The top part was good, but there was a cookie base and it was soggy and not so good.

Morgan got the chocolate pudding.
DSC_0218.jpg

He said it was good, although it was a very small serving.

Lily got the kids' sushi.
DSC_0222.jpg

She loved it! It was really cute and sooo clever. The soy sauce was chocolate, the sushi was rice krispie, and the wasabi and ginger were marshmellow. She still talks about it frequently.

I got the Valrhona Chocolate Cake - Warm Chocolate Cake with Molten Center, House-made Salted Caramel Ice Cream, and Roasted Golden Pineapple $12
DSC_0221.jpg

Again, one of the best things that I've ever eaten! The molten chocolate cake was dark and rich. I questioned the whole salted caramel thing, but no more. It was amazing, and made the ice cream just zing! I didn't eat the roasted pineapple as I don't like cooked fruit, but I didn't miss it at all!

This was without a doubt one of the best meals I've ever eaten in my life. The rest of my family was so-so about it (although they agreed that the view will take your breath away). It really does prove that it's all about what you order.

Coming up next: heading home and a final wrap-up

Great update Shannon! We really want to try Cali Grill in July! Would they think me crazy if I asked for my pork to be cooked a little more?
Call me old fashioned, but I don't like pink pork....
Poor Morgan, getting lost at Disney is no fun!
Glad your mom was quick to his rescue!

:offtopic:
Did you and Courtney do any photo pass pics? Couldn't remember if you wanted to join our group...

Ughhh Wigd I am having a flashback of some pork that I think you had once that was quite pink? :confused3:scared1:
Beautiful pictures of your food and view Shannon! Yum!
They serve ostrich at Jiko too. My niece almost got it (she is a country girl and will eat anything. anything) but she opted for the filet. I was surprised when our server told us it was red meat. I would like Lily's dessert! It was so pretty!
So sorry about your back injury and pain. I have never experienced it but to those that have say it is like no other. Feel better soon!

Tracy

So sorry about your back. Your trip report is wonderful, the pictures make me feel like I'm back at Disney! We were there 12/11-12/15 and loved it.

LOVE the pic of Morgan (and his Goofy shirt! :goodvibes)!

Cali Grill looks yummy...that dessert of Lily's is soooo cute!

Dinner looks great. Poor Morgan though.

I guess I haven't seen fireworks pictures before from the angle you took them. How strange to have them over Space Mountain. LOL

That sushi dessert is adorable.

Oh my gosh, I'm drooling over the pictures of your meal right now! The fireworks shots are great, too!

No, they ask if cooking the pork medium is okay, so I'm sure they'd be fine with you asking for it to be cooked more. It was truly delicious!

Morgan's such an emotional little thing that he completely panicked when he couldn't see anyone. I was proud of the decision to go back to the table though. It was the exact right thing to do.

We did do photo pass pictures, but I think we're going to do our own order because Courtney got a 30% off coupon on her birthday card at the resort.

My back seems better today. Just a few twinges here and there. Cali Grill is gorgeous. Courtney & I went there so I'll have some more in the next TR.

Isn't it wonderful?? I can't wait to start my December TR. Disney is so awesome dressed up for Christmas.

LOVE the pic of Morgan (and his Goofy shirt! :goodvibes)!

I love that picture too. The Goofy shirt is from Disney.com. It's a black polo type shirt. I actually ordered him an adult small. It was a little big, but I think it will fit for a while to come which will be nice. Funny about the Disney clothes~~ every time Morgan dresses himself these days he chooses one of those shirts! Guess it's his way of reliving the trip~

Dinner looks great. Poor Morgan though.

I guess I haven't seen fireworks pictures before from the angle you took them. How strange to have them over Space Mountain. LOL

That sushi dessert is adorable.

The fireworks were different from that angle. It's weird for them not to be directly behind the castle.

The sushi dessert was definitely Lily's favorite thing she ate all week!

Oh my gosh, I'm drooling over the pictures of your meal right now! The fireworks shots are great, too!

It was on my list of the greatest meals I've ever had. Everything I ate was just perfect!

WOW!! Cali Grill looks amazing!! Amazing view of the fireworks, amazing food selection (especially the desserts)!! That kid's sushi is ADORABLE!! Poor Morgan--glad he wasn't lost for long!

That looks like a seriously great meal- ambiance, food, service, everything!

Yeah, that was weird how the fireworks look like they're over SpMtn

Poor Morgan!! That must have been very scary for him. Glad someone was able to intercept and reassure him.

So, you seemed to have timed your meal just right. What time did you have your ADR for?? and what time was Wishes??

Cali Grill is definitely amazing!!

Morgan is really sensitive, so what probably wouldn't have been a big deal for most kids through him into a panic. Luckily, it all worked out.

So, you seemed to have timed your meal just right. What time did you have your ADR for?? and what time was Wishes??

Our ADR was for 7:20. Wishes was at 9:00, I believe. It wasn't planned since the IPO got our reservation, but it did turn out perfectly. When we got there the sun was going down, and Wishes was between our entree and dessert courses.

So, there was a crazy rush in the morning for check-in. We were supposed to be on the 8:15 bus, but we were in line behind

~Claudette & Nicole*~ the crazy French ladies who had bought everything in WDW and had to pack and repack their brand new Disney suitcases multiple times to try and meet the weight requirements.
~Shaniqua and her 14 children*~ the woman who told me I "better not be thinkin' about cuttin' her in line 'cause she was there first"

(*names changed to protect the innocent, or not so innocent)

Turns out the printers weren't working right. I finally sent the grandmothers to go fill up their mugs since the line wasn't moving. Of course, right after that, it came to my turn and they wouldn't check me in without seeing the rest of the groups' faces. Well, we waited and waited until I finally realized that they weren't coming right back and ran to get them. They were leisurely sitting in the food court drinking their coffee thinking I was handling the whole thing! :scared1:

Anyway, we ended up on the 8:55 bus which left at 9:15. Luckily, it was chock full at our resort so it didn't have to go to any of the other All-Stars. I probably would have lost my cool. Morgan & I sat by an adorable baby on the bus with 2 bottom teeth and Morgan played with him the whole way to the airport.

There was a totally obnoxious kid, probably at least 5 or 6, sitting behind us yelling each character's name as it came on the screen during the little bus video. Probably, on the way there I would have thought it was cute; but at this point, his LOUD cries of "Goofy" "Pluto" etc made me want to tape his little mouth shut. (That's awful, isn't it? You can tell I was in the going home kind of mood.....)

In the airport, we brightened up a bit and the kids had one last photo shoot:

DSC_0226.jpg

Morgan happy because he found Goofy.

DSC_0224.jpg

Lily happy because Minnie's sitting on Goofy's foot.

DSC_0228.jpg

Morgan pouting because we made him pose with his sister.

Not a great picture, but Morgan & Stitch looking out the airport window as we take off.

Coming up next: Final thoughts & Final Accounting Notes

I love the last picture. Looking forward to your final thoughts. We learned a lot on our trip on how we want to do Disney in the future.

Disney in October: Fabulous!! Next year we're going to try March, but I can't imagine it will be so great. I love going in October, and I wish my school district would give us back our week long fall break.

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party:Definite must do if there are no kids who can't stay up late. It's not worth it with little ones, especially those who need to stay on a strict schedule. But if your kids can go with the flow, it's awesome. Ride as many rides as possible during the first parade and then stake out a great spot for the fireworks and second parade!

The Polynesian:I can't imagine not loving the Poly. It's completely gorgeous, amazing location, and beautiful spacious rooms. It's so hard for me not to make it my must-do place, but I do see the draw of a villa and I'm hoping that I'll fall in love with DVC once we buy in.

Traveling with the Grandmothers:It's not always easy to try and make everyone happy, but the joy I see on their faces when they look at the kids makes it all worth it. Renting the ECV for Grammie was a great solution, and I'm working on convincing her for next time that she should rent it for the whole time rather than just in the parks. Next time I'd like to try some split afternoons/evenings where we can have adult times and so can they.

Overall, it was a fabulous vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed each other and loved Disney even more as the kids were older. Hopefully, with buying into DVC soon, we'll be able to go at a more leisurely pace and appreciate more about the resorts. We stay in these amazing places and don't really have time to truly explore them. I want to plan our next trip with a resort day in the middle to just sleep in and relax. I also want to spend a less crowded time at Downtown Disney and explore it some more too.

Next post: A more thorough accounting than y'all probably want

You won't hurt my feelings if you skip this. It's a pretty thorough accounting of what we spent and my feelings about Deluxe Dining.

Food:
Alcohol + tips: $282.03

Dining plan cost: $743.84

What our meals would have cost :
California Grill: $269.26
Chef Mickey's: $71.96
Ohana: $122.90
Narcoosee's: $219.91
Le Cellier: $126.77
50's Prime Time: $71.16
Akershus: $99.88
Kona: 81.97
Cinderella's Royal Table: 134.47
TOTAL: 1198.28

So, the dining plan saved us $454.44, not counting 24 snacks and the refillable mugs.

Of course, that is contigent upon the assumption that we would have gone to all of those restaurants and ordered all of that food in the first place. I don't know if that's true or not. We really enjoyed going to the nicer restaurants and having 2 sit down breaks a day. The reservation times didn't bother us because having 2 kids and 2 older people we really needed the frequent breaks (it was another story in my December trip so follow me there if you want to hear about that).

Restaurants I loved: California Grill, Narcoosee's, Chef Mickey's (for the characters, not the food), Le Cellier
Restaurants that I liked: Akershus, Kona
Restaurants that I probably wouldn't go to again: Ohana, 50's Prime Time, Cinderella's Royal Table

So, I really enjoy the 2TS places, and I'm glad we had the deluxe plan to encourage us to go there. And if I was going there I would get the same things again. I think in March we're going to try the regular dining plan and combine meals for credits. Especially since I'll have had my WLS then and probably won't be able to eat big portions.

Miscellaneous:
Souvenirs: $323.79 (including presents for people back home)
airport parking: $65
taxi: $20
