1-26-08 Western -- "Non-Disney" People go cruising

We got back on board at about 4:30 and put the kids straight down for a nap. Having learned from our prior cruise nap experience, we wanted to make sure they got at least a couple of hours. So DW and I chilled out on the veranda while the boys snoozed. It was another blissful afternoon.

We roused everyone at around 6:30 to get ready for Pirate’s Night. In a fit of never-before-seen advanced vacation planning, I had bought the boys Jack Sparrow costumes after Halloween for 75% off. I also bought inflatable buccaneer swords, earrings, and eye patches. I even found some pirate make-up that I used to give myself and the boys pirate stubble and scars. I may be biased, but I think they’re the cutest pirates to sail the seven seas:

Before dinner, we headed out to Studio Sea for “A Pirate’s Life for Me.” This was basically a quiz show that pitted one side of the bar against the other in questions and contests. It was all rather silly and fun. Our team won because our CM, Lisa, brazenly cheated during the dubloon toss, not that it mattered. Here’s DW and the boys posing by the set.

Dinner that night was a Parrot Cay, the perfect spot for a pirate’s feast (The APLAPLA rotation was definitely a plus). The food was good and the overall atmosphere seemed much more raucous and fun than prior nights. Most of the kids had some kid of costume, but adults varied widely. Some had nothing or just the bandanna that came with dinner. Others had a POC T-shirt, while others went all out. I was on the more piratey end of the scale with the face make-up, eye patch, earring and pirate teeth. The overall effect was NOT pretty. Here’s the whole family at dinner:

At dessert, our servers surprised me with a birthday celebration. I had turned the big 4-0 a week before the cruise, so it was really nice. Here I am with the monstrous (and very tasty) “slice” of DCL cake:

After dinner we headed up on Deck 9 for the Pirates In the Caribbean Party. The party was led by a group of CMs I dubbed “Team UK”: Bailey, Lisa and Natalie from England, and Sheika from Wales. They were all dressed as pirate wenches (hey, that’s the technical term) and had clearly done this once or twice before as they bopped about the stage in perfect unisom. We were right down in front of the stage and danced along to the whole crew. Unfortunately, not many people were trying to follow along, as most stood off to the side and watched or video-taped the festivities. The boys had a great time boogying down to the pirate favorites (pirates are seemingly partial to 70’s and 80’s dance hits). Here they are shakin’ it pirate-style:

I won’t ruin the surprise finale, but the kids really enjoyed it. Then it was time for the fireworks. Our servers had told us that the best spot to see them was the starboard side of Deck 10. We didn’t make it up there, but I certainly see what they meant. The fireworks seemed pretty close on Deck 9. You must have felt like you could reach out and touch them on Deck 10. It was very, very, cool.

We would have liked to stay up to watch “POC: Curse of the Black Pearl” on Ariel TV, but it’s PG-13 and we’re pretty strict about that kind of thing (it was also almost 11 at this stage). We got back to our room to find the boy’s favorite towel animal of the cruise – a monkey:

Up NEXT: Palo Perfection, round 2.

I am enjoying your report so much! Have you been converted yet? Huh huh have ya?
I really think you and your wife would enjoy WDW during the cooler months - say October? it's not very crowded, the food and wine festival is going on and so is Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party! Of course, there's also Victoria and Albert's for a special night out without the boys.
Heh.
DO IT!
I haven't been to Victoria and Albert's, but it's definitely on my to do list.
So is a Disney cruise.
I've been on one cruise and went to Costa Maya, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios.
Costa Maya was surprisingly great - not much commercialization at all and a bucket of beer on the beach for 12 bucks!
Grand Cayman was very disappointing in comparison. The public beach was dirty and you couldn't snorkel from the beach like you could in Costa Maya.
I can't wait for the rest!

Well, I'm definitely a DCL convert, but I'm not sure I'll ever be a true "Disney person" that loves (and collects) all things Disney. Having two boys (and being a boy myself) probably has something to do with it.

That being said, I think we'll definitely get to WDW in the next year or two. Now that I've discovered the DIS, I'm confident that I can pick up all the tips I need to make it work for my family. Hmmm, a Land and Sea package sounds like a plan.

I can attest that being a boy (which I am) and having boys (which I do) has nothing at all to do with it! My boys are 13 and 11, and they LOVE getting into it. They both have amazing pin collections, and routinely wear Disney clothing (albeit grungy-type clothing designed for their age group). They still look for Mickey at WDW or on board so they can get their picture with him. DS11 has huge Mickey feet for slippers...

I see how much they enjoy it, and I hope that they never lose sight of just how much fun they can have by acting like kids. WDW is the only place that DH11 will still hold DW's hand....

I am loving reading your story... and I love those hats... we are going in Jan 2009 on a 7 day eastern... and I think I will do hats for everyone... my kids are 10 and 14 that are going. I wanna dress up too... so if we all do hats it's reversible... just take it off.

Thanks for a great story... keep it going!:goodvibes

Oh, that looks like fun! I love the costumes -- they are adorable pirates! Seriously, it seems that your family is having such a great time. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I'm really enjoying the read! :)

Loved your Cozumel Update. Would love to see pics of the dolphins. I know scanning is time consuming ;) .

Kaysmommie, YesGrumpy, CRSNDSNY, clower5luvzdiz, celerystalker,

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

When I read other TRs, I realize that our trip was very enjoyable but low on the drama front. Sorry... no drunken evenings, nasty kids, argumentative passengers, etc., etc. Hopefully it's informative to those that haven't cruised yet and brings back good memories for those who have.

Now I just need to finish this magnus opus.

It's great! I've really enjoyed reading your report :) Waiting for more ..... :surfweb:

Your report is excellent. Our first cruise (3 nights) is coming up in Aug & the DIS is the place to be!

Personally, I LOVED the veranda. It was a tranquil retreat from all the people on deck 9 and the perfect spot to read my book with a glass of wine. It was just my own little piece of the world... the blue sea, passing skies, wonderful. Now, you have to understand that I usually rate my vacations by the number of books I read... (DW STILL complains about 7 on our two-week honeymoon over 10 years ago). This vacation I only managed 1.5 books... and did not miss it.

Here's me on the veranda, doing what I do best...

You are my husband's personality twin! He too read about ten books on our honeymoon and we always have to have a separate bag for books when vacationing.

We too loved our verandah for exactly the same reasons and did the same exact things out there every day - wine in hand, book usually sitting lap while I gazed out at the ocean. It was heaven. What a perfect way to get in those naps for the kids - it was essential for our kids too - and have some very relaxed adult time too! :thumbsup2 :goodvibes

Thank you for taking the time to do this report. It will be our first Western Cruise next year and it's so helpful to see what others with similar family dynamics did. You have convinced me that I am not nuts to be seeking a private sailboat charter on Grand Cayman! :surfweb: Thanks again!
