1-26-08 Western -- "Non-Disney" People go cruising

Anticipating that “Day at Sea” meant “Ship full of people”, Job 1 was staking out some chairs by the Goofy pool. At 8:30am the weather was already perfect. DW and I took turns getting a tray of food at Topsiders, and we all chowed down by the pool under the warming morning sun. After breakfast, the kids went swimming while DW and I started in on our books. By the time High School Musical started on Ariel TV (the huge outdoor screen by Goofy Pool) at 10:00, there was not a chair to be had.

Pool time was actually a bunch of fun. The port side of Deck 9 by Goofy and Mickey Pools has 2 foosball games and 2 table tennis tables. DS5 (Mr. Competitive, remember?) was all over these. After beating both DW and I in foosball, DS5 started horning in on other people’s games. The great thing about DCL is that almost everyone has kids, so my pushy little guy was accepted with good humor. DS5 and I also tried some table tennis, but it’s tricky playing with a 5-year old on a moving ship with people walking by. We had fun just seeing how long of a rally we could keep going.

Mr. Competitive really wanted to check out bingo, so he and I headed to Rockin’ Bar D while DW and DS7 stayed at the pool. Bingo is hosted by Bailey from England, a.k.a. “The Queen of Bingo.” She is an absolute howl and has a constant chatter going on with the crowd and rest of the crew (Oscar from Mexico, Luke from L.A. and Naomi from New Zealand). Game 2 was “the Corners” … top B, bottom B, top O, bottom O. If you win you must stand up and shout “I have B-O!” There was much excitement when DS5’s card hit, and he yelled in his little boy voice “I have B-O! I have B-O!” There was another winner so he split the $78 but also got a shower radio for his trouble. Needless to say, he was hooked. This would not be our last DCL bingo.

After Bingo, DW convinced me to join her for a workout. Now, I’ve worked out before… just not in about 8 months. We dropped the kids at the Club and headed to the gym on Deck 9. At 11:15am it was far emptier than at 9:00am the prior day – maybe a quarter full. DW and I got ellipticals next to each other in the front row by the windows. Let me say that if you’re going to be working out, this is the spot: A beautiful view over the pristine foredeck sparkling in the Caribbean sun. You are actually looking out over the crew’s private pool and sun deck, though it doesn’t look like it gets much work. The machines all have TVs with the same channels as the room TVs – you just need to bring your own earphones.

After 45 minutes of heavy breathing, I headed over to the weight machines. MAJOR mistake. While it’s fine to get back into aerobic after a long break, jumping back into weight training can only have one result – pain. Combine that with “the gym factor” (trying to lift more than you really should), and I was still recovering from this workout as I walked off the ship days later.

Since the kids were having lunch at the Club, this would have been the day to hit the sit-down restaurant for lunch, especially since it was Lumiere’s. Unfortunately, by the time we were all cleaned up it was 1:15 and lunch was over by 1:30, so it was off to Topsiders again.

After lunch, we headed down to Signals for the Stem-to-Stern Wine Tasting. Shockingly, this was the only activity that we signed up for at Guest Services. It was actually pretty full, so book in advance. When we arrived, each place was already set with 5 glasses – 3 white and 2 red. We had a great time. A word of warning though: there’s about a 20 minute talk before you get to taste the first wine. Luckily the tasting is hosted by Shawn, the sommelier from Palo. He’s a real character – a little cocky but very amusing. Overall, the whole thing was informative and entertaining. The wines are pretty tasty, but don’t go expecting $100 bottles of world-class Cab.

The high point was when one of the other wine stewards demonstrated “sabrage” -- opening a champagne bottle by knocking the neck off with a knife. Very dramatic. We actually found out later from our head server that the sabrage was eliminated from the Wine Tasting for a while after a steward had the bottle slip and slit open their hand from the razor-sharp broken neck. OUCH!

After all the excitement, we picked up the kids and headed back to the room for a little R&R. After the late night before, we decided that boys needed a nap. By 5pm the whole family was out. Unfortunately, we had to rouse them only an hour later since tonight was formal night, and we wanted to hit the Captain’s cocktail reception at 7:15. Hey, DCL doesn’t give out free booze much, so you’ve got to take it when you can. Then the plan was to see Freddie Fusion at Rockin’ Bar D. DS5 clearly didn’t get enough sleep and had a bit of a meltdown. As I was getting on his shoes, he decided that this was the moment that he had to learn to tie his laces BY HIMSELF!

I went with my tux, while DW had a slinky dress. DW had found some used blazers on eBay for the boys for only $5 each! They were perfect and the boys looked like proper little gentlemen:

Of course, by the time everyone was dressed it was 7:25. So the choice was free booze or Freddie Fusion… Freddie won. We had looked forward to his show ever since his performance on opening night, and he did not disappoint. A great time for all ages.

After the show, we headed across the Atrium to dinner at Lumiere’s. It was the perfect spot for Formal Night. Here’s a picture of the family with Ivan and Ranzil:

The boys had Mickey bars for dessert, which were a great hit!

After dinner we took the obligatory picture by Capt. Mickey:

Being all dressed up, we wanted somewhere to go. Luckily DCL provided the Golden Mickey After Party in Studio Sea. This was a fun family dance party hosted by Sheika and ???? from Australia (for some reason I cannot remember the MALE staff member’s name). We had overall boogying, line dancing, and more.

After working off a little of dinner, we headed back to our room. Ike had worked his magic: the room was spotless, and we were greeted by tonight’s towel animal -- an elephant:

Your boys look incredibly handsome. You have a fine family. I'm glad you had such a great time. You are really making me wish for another trip!!!!

Excellent report! Your boys are adorable too. We just booked our first cruise for October. DO you happen to have pics of this terrific stateroom you were upgraded to and the balcony. I was thinking of upgrading to a balcony stateroom but maybe I will wait to see if i'ts cheaper at the Port ;) .

Great TR so far. Don't forget to let us know about the stateroom/veranda. I hope it's worth it... I have the exact same stateroom (8520) booked for a 7 night Eastern in November!

Thank you. Of course, DW and I think our boys are the cutest ever, but we're biased. Wait 'til you see the Pirate Night pics...!

As I write this I'm wondering how we can go again. DW and I were just commiserating around the kitchen table last night. After such a wonderful time everyday life seems that much more dull. "Is it better to have loved and lost...? Is it better to have Disney Cruised and returned...?"

Love your trip report! Thank you for all the wonderful details. My family and I are DCL newbies too, and reports like this one really help with our planning, and in increasing my excitement! :thumbsup2

Unfortunately, we really don't have good pics of the stateroom. As I put this TR together I realize how few informational pics we have. I was recently looking at a TR where they had pics of everyone's meal, every day!

Here the DIS description:

Basically, the choice of veranda over pothole over inside depends upon how much time you think you'll spend in the stateroom. If you have little kids that will be napping (which we did, even though our 5 and 7 yr olds don't usually nap anymore), then I think it's worth it. Also, if your kids will be heading to bed early (DCL does not offer in-cabin baby sitting), then the veranda is a really nice spot.

Personally, I LOVED the veranda. It was a tranquil retreat from all the people on deck 9 and the perfect spot to read my book with a glass of wine. It was just my own little piece of the world... the blue sea, passing skies, wonderful. Now, you have to understand that I usually rate my vacations by the number of books I read... (DW STILL complains about 7 on our two-week honeymoon over 10 years ago). This vacation I only managed 1.5 books... and did not miss it.

Here's me on the veranda, doing what I do best...

Anyway, if you're looking for a place to relax and get away for everything, then the veranda is worth it. It you plan to do lots of activities or spend time on shore or by the pool, then probably not. Unlike other cruise lines, all of the DCL staterooms are a good size and really don't change much in terms of appointments between cats. In fact, as far as I know, with the exception of wall Vs. porthole Vs. veranda, there is zero difference between a deluxe interior room (cat 10) and Deluxe Stateroom with Veranda (cat 5).

We actually got upgraded all the way to a cat 4 "Family Suite". This is basically the same as the other other deluxe rooms but with an extra 4-feet of length before the veranda. There is a chair here and a Murphy bed in the wall (though we did not use). Most useful, there's an extra armoire thingy that was great for everyone's clothes. It really added some nice extra storage space.

Overall, we loved our room. Of course, now we're spoiled for our next trip...

See my response on "Veranda or no", above. Unfortunately, not many photos, but you will not be disappointed. Old 8520 was a perfect spot. Take care of it for us (we'll be back!).

How many will you have in the room? I guess it sleeps up to 5 with the murphy bed by the veranda.

We will also have four in the room. My wife & I, daughter 9, and son 8. It will be our first cruise, though I don't think it will be our last!

we were on the same sailing! I was looking at the picture from the sail away party and my husband is in the background on deck ten (to the right) with the video camera.....I recognized your boys from the ship...too funny. What a fun cruise. Like your trip report.

Did you have a good time? Can you attach a photo so we can see if we recognize your gang?

You mentioned thinking of trying a restaurant for lunch...we ate breakfast most days at either Lumier's or Parrot Cay and were never really hungry for lunch, mostly did Pluto's or Pinocchio's. The best laid plans... just go with the flow like you did and you have a list of things to do "next time". I do have pictures of our stateroom 8510 I can try and post for those who want to see what it looks like.

The darker picture gives you an idea of the size of the "living area", on the wall behind the chair is where the murphy bed is. There is a picture of the entryway with the bathroom doors closed, the storage trunk, the pull down top bunk and the drawers. Hope this helps.

When we woke up on Tuesday morning, the ship was already anchored in the harbor off George Town. It was warm but overcast. I might have been worried about the fate of our beach day, but I knew from reading other TRs that Grand Canyan is frequently overcast or rainly in the morning only to clear up into beautiful 80-degree sunny days.

I got everyone moving by 8 (no mean feat), and we headed for Topsiders. Yikes! We were no alone in this plan since the line was out the door. So for plan B we hit Goofy’s Galley for a quick bite. There was actually a full choice of cereals, fresh fruit and pastries. The kids didn’t even grumble about the lack of Mickey waffles when presented with cinnamon rolls. Somehow I managed to survive without a greasy pile of bacon and eggs for one morning.

As we sat eating by the Mickey pool, DW suggested I grab some of the pool towels to take to the beach. “I’m pretty sure they hand them out down by the tender,” I said. She looked unconvinced, so I asked one of the Wet Nap CMs outside Topsiders, who confirmed my theory.

Now, the plan for GC was to load up on sandwiches from room service and some fruit and cereal from Topsiders to avoid the expensive food we’d heard about by the beach. Well, that was the plan anyway. Of course we hadn’t ordered room service sandwiches the night before. Plus, I’d read horror stories about people not being allowed to bring their food onto the beach and having to sit by the side of road wolfing down sammies. We decided to just wing it.

We made it down to the Buena Vista theater at about 8:45, which is pretty good going for my gang. We all sat in the comfy seats with Playhouse Disney on the big screen to keep the kids amused. All very Disney-thoughtful (a new adjective). After maybe 10 minutes we were off to the tender. We ended up being backed onto the stairs to deck one as we waited for everyone to board. As I got closer to the tender, I still couldn’t see the expected pile of towels or friendly CM handing them out. When we got to the KTTW swipe guy I asked about the towels. “Oh, you need to get those up on Deck 9 by the pools.” DW gave me one of those arched eyebrow looks that managed to communicate “See I told you so,” and “What now, Mr. DCL expert?”

Now, my old, non-cruise calmed self probably would have cursed, gotten mad and stormed back up to Deck 9 while yelling for DW to somehow “Hold the tender!” But instead I managed to remain totally stress-free and replied, “I guess we’re getting some souvenir beach towels from Grand Cayman.”

As we waited for the tender to push off, a fake pirate ship (and I’m sure evening booze cruise barge) came by and fired its cannons, much to the glee of all the little boys (young and old) on board. Here it is:
100_2044.jpg

Once we docked, we headed to the nearby shops in search of beach towels. There seemed to be every sort of jewelry, camera and luxury shop around, but no souvenir shop. What kind of tourist trap is this anyway? Eventually (okay, after 5 mins) we found one on the second level of the port mall. Suitably over-stuffed with junk, it offered towels from $15 to $25 each. I managed to convince DW that we could survive with two of the $15 variety. Now maybe I was supposed to haggle or something, but I really wasn’t in the mood, so I just paid, and we went in search of a taxi.

A word of warning here on GC taxis. Almost all are at least a mini-mini-bus and will NOT leave until completely full. So unless you enjoy sitting in a cramped mini-mini-bus for 15-20 minutes, I’d suggest looking for one almost full or with a line of people to fill it. When we got in there were already four people onboard (so that’s 8 with my clan for those keeping count), leaving space for 2 more. Enough to head out? Nope. We waited another 10 minutes for 2 more people. Not the end of the world, but just worth considering, especially if it’s one of the bigger mini-buses.

So for $5 a head we were off to Sea Grapes beach (DIS reco), about a 15-minute trip. We were actually one of the earlier arrivers, so we were able to rent loungers in the first row by the water ($8 per + $5 for umbrella = $21). Given that the loungers ended up 3 rows deep and pretty crowded, it was definitely worth it to get there a little earlier for an unobstructed view of the water.

Going into this vacation I’d read about how GC’s Seven Mile beach (of which Sea Grapes is an area) was one of the world’s most beautiful. I guess I was expecting miles of sandy white beach, but it was actually rather narrow so there was not much space between the bar/restaurant and the beach. The sea was nice and clear, but the beach sloped down quickly, so the boys were rapidly out of their depth. Not that they cared. They were having a great time playing in the water and with their sand toys.

Don’t get me wrong… it was a beautiful day, we were at the beach, the boys were having fun, servers were coming by with drinks... I’m just saying there’s probably a better spot. Does anyone have any suggestions?

When lunch rolled around we headed to the restaurant right next to the beach since good smells were coming from the kitchen. The menu was bar food with a tropical flare – think burgers and conch fritters. Make that EXPENSIVE bar food with a tropical flare. The burgers were GC$10 each. I guess a more seasoned vacation planner might have figured out the exchange rate before we ordered, since that GC$10 burger actually turned out to be a US$12 burger. Yikes. Our 3 burgers with fries, onion rings, a couple of Sprites and 4 beers came to about GC$67… or US$85. With tip we were looking at a $100 lunch. Double yikes.

This was the point where we wished we’d gone with the room service sammies plan. Oh well. The servers were not pushy, so I don’t think having the food on the beach would have been a problem. BTW, if you go to the bar at Sea Grapes, two people could easily split a burger. Those things were HUGE.

Here’s a pic of the boys at lunch:
100_2053.jpg

100_2054.jpg

After lunch, DW decided that the water trikes looked like fun. The trikes are two-seaters, but we were able to fit one adult and the two boys. DW went first for about 15 minutes, then it was my turn. Let me tell you, this thing was HARD WORK… at least with just one person pedaling and 100 lbs of non-pedaling boys. After 15 minutes, I’d had enough. Luckily DW had only rented for 30 minutes ($25), so we dropped it off and headed back to the loungers for a well-earned rest.

Here are DW and I in action on the trikes:

At about 3PM, we headed back to the port. While the DCL line was pretty reasonable, the neighboring cruises (Celebrity?) had people lined up way down the sidewalk. We’re talking at least a 20-minute wait for those poor folks. The DCL line moved quickly and they even served water while we waited. FYI – DCL checked every bag. I’m not sure if it was just security, or if they were checking for booze or whatever.

Next UP … Palo Perfection.

Purplepeg,

Thanks. Our room was exactly like yours, just reversed with bed on left as you came in.
