1/1/11- Did anyone start dieting for the New Year?

I am doing a food journal.

I am writing down everything I eat and drink right now. Then I plan on evolving change out of what I see my patterns are. I am looking up the calories and sugar of the foods I consume.

For me, getting informed helps me make better choices.

.

I don't really need to lose any weight, but I want to stay right where I am now, or lose 5 pounds tops. But I just put a food journal app on my phone and have been tracking everything I eat. I actually ate more than I thought I did, little things (like the liquid creamer in my coffee) really add up! So now I've cut back to only one cup of coffee a day (because I really love the liquid creamer, so I won't cut that out). Plus I'm paying more attention to serving size and actually stopping when I feel full...not eating more just because it's yummy!

I'm writing everything I eat and drink in a day down, that way I'm able to see just what I ate and I can adjust my eating habits based on that.

We still have too much good stuff in the house and if I start back on my diet now - I know I won't have the willpower to not eat it. Plus we have a "diet group" at work that will start on the 5th. The competition is like Biggest Loser - we all put in $35 and then have 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners. plus winners for most inches lost. And we do this for about 10 - 12 weeks.

I would like to lose about 50 pounds and hope to loose at least 2 pounds per week.

DH & I are renewing our vows in April (in WDW) so I would LOVE to look really slim and sexy. :)

Good luck everyone!

DH and I have restarted Low Carbing. We both have a fair amount to lose. It worked well for us before but we went on a few vacations and fell off the wagon. We've been back at it for a week and I have lost 4 pounds. The thing that is helping so far this time is having real recipes to follow. We pick out our meals for the week on Sunday and make sure we have all of the ingredients in the house. That way I don't have to struggle to come up with things to make. If I struggle then I end up doing chicken breasts and burgers with no buns every night, which is LAME!

This is the recipe book we are using right now because we are in phase one: http://www.amazon.com/Phase-Low-Carb-Recipes-Better-Gardens/dp/0696222558

We have the phase 2 and 3 books as well as some great books by George Stella. So far we have really enjoyed everything we've made from the cookbooks and we haven't felt deprived.

Good luck everyone!

I'm starting up my 'diet' on Tues. I've learned that I could eat no food for a week and still not really lose weight unless I exercise. So, my focus is on cutting back the portion size, soda, and dessert. Sweets are really whats tough for me, so I need to watch what I eat after dinner. And, I need to exercise. I've started that up already, but will really watch what I eat more in a couple days, once we're back on a normal weekday schedule. I have about 10 pounds I want gone by spring/summer.

Happy New Year everyone! :cheer2: Good luck to all who are making great changes this year!!:cheer2: There are a lot of great ideas on this thread!!!:thumbsup2

I'm trying to do *something*. While I have not gained a lot of weight (I really would be happy with a 10lb loss), I've certainly gotten "fatter" and my clothes are very tight now--even my loose jeans.

I can't decide how I am going to change my eating.

I'm not good at starvation.

I don't want to do WW because they use too much artificial stuff in order to get calorie counts down.

I have to be careful with a lot of "healthy" foods because they bother my digestive tract: i.e., beans, nuts, and many fruits keep me chained to the bathroom.

I hate plain chicken breast with some stupid glaze on top for all my meals. I mean I don't hate chicken but I can't stand some dried up old breast meat every other night. That's certain to derail me.

So, I'm really not sure how I'm going to handle this except that I've got no more junk in the house. That' a start.

But I want to eat better, much less processed, a bit lower carbs.

I'll be reading this thread to see if anyone has something going on that might fit me.

NOt trying to talk you into WW but really you don't have to use anything artificial to get points down. My mom did it years ago when they didn't even make most of this pre packaged fake stuff. I can be done without purchasing any of their stuff, it just makes it more convenient sometimes. I don't purchase it because it is so expensive, but sometimes it is a life saver.

Everyone is different, someone posted that they ate cereal for breakfast, a certain type and they didn't get hungry. If I eat any type of carb in the morning I am starving a shaky 2 hours later, but if I have an egg with toast, I am fine.

Good luck to everyone, I am trying WW. I need to lose about 60-70 pounds, I have a cruise this summer, so I have to get going.

The food journal is really helpful. I have done it in the past.:thumbsup2

Now granted I am sick but for the most part, I expected to see myself eating 3000+ a day and unfortunately it looks like it is between 1600-2000 per day so far.

In addition you see all the empty calories. GAK. I need to exercise and lose 15lbs.

Christine, I understand your issues. I used to be you, now I have reflux and constipation, hurray!:headache:

Doing a food journal will help you adjust your diet in terms of calories and see patterns. You should not eat things that you know bother you.

Believe me, it is really tough to avoid cheese, spices, herbs, etc as well.

I didn't realize how many calories I was drinking a day in my flavored liquid creamer. I can't give it up all together, but I can and did cut back to only one cup of coffee a day instead of two. I measured the amount of creamer I use and it's 4 servings which equal 6 grams of fat and 140 calories. So, by limiting myself to only one cup a day instead of two I knocked out 980 calories a week. :thumbsup2

Now, next week at Disney, all bets are off, but thankfully I usually don't gain more than a pound or two at Disney with all the walking we do. I am going to try and keep it to one decadent treat a day, but not sure if I can do that. :confused3

Yeah I have already eliminated over 3000+ calorries a week. I just gave up a daily White Mocha from Starbucks - 560cal & a glass of White Zin at bedtime.

No wonder I gained 40lbs this year:rolleyes1

I'm going to be starting WW here soon. I haven't been kind to my body these past couple of months-- I love to eat and I love to eat a lot!

Currently, I'm 5'9" and weigh 175. I would love to get back down to 140-145.

Back in the day I was a dancer who struggled with an eating disorder, got help, gained, hit my 145 and all was well. Now with the weight gain, I feel absolutely awful about myself (hello eating disorder mentality!) but can't stop eating. UGH.

Good luck to all!
