Anyone start a diet regime to kick off the new year?

Whats your plan? Please share!

I a, not doing a specific program like WW, but I KNOW my eating habits are not good so I am trying so hard to change that. Before I had DD I was about 115 and I am about 5'3". A year after I had her I was pretty close to my pre-pregnancy weight. But then I went back to school and I think the stress made me eat and I usually had a glass of wine or a beer a few times a week after class while doing homework. So now I am probably 15 pounds overweight and want to look in shape for my wedding in Aug.

So I am just trying to eat better. I usually had like a Pillsbury strussel or bagel for breakfast, I just had 1 egg this morning (and yesterday morning). For lunch I had 3 morning star chicken nuggets and a side of brocolli. For dinner I had a salad with half a piece of chicken cut up on top and a sweet potato. For my snack a bowl of cheerios with 2% milk. I never had the habit of snacking throughout the day, it was usually just a massive snack at night lol. DO you think this is good? My problem is carbs, I love them and cannot TOTALLY eliminate them. And I was HUGE on sweets, pasta, and pizza. At night I'd sit down and eat whatever sweets we had in the house. Anyone have any good items to snack on? Any good dinner recipes? Breakfast ideas?

I have to say I'm not hungry. I think I have been just eating b/c it was "relaxing and comforting" to me.

Next week I am going to try and get some sort of work out going. Its so cold here and this past summer I walked like 3 miles everyday, but I know I won't be doing that until probably March or April, but maybe I could do something around the house in the mean time. Any workout ideas?

So what do ya say? DIS Dieting Support Group 2011? LoL
...I need a scale to keep track lol.

I'm going to do the Flat Belly Diet but haven't started yet because we traveled all weekend. Tomorrow is my grocery store run so I can stock up on everything I need.

I joined WW online, and just started it today. I am 5'2" and weigh 166 lbs. My goal wt is 130 lbs. Currently size 14, would love to be an 8, but would feel good in a 10.

I love to eat. Sweet, salty, bread, love it all. So I need to be accountable to some system. I had a bowl of raisin bran and cup of milk for breakfast, so I've used 7 of my 29 pts so far today. I've told my family (dh, ds13, dd11, dd1) that I'll be using ww recipes for the next few months, playing around to see what we like. They can eat it or fix something for themselves, but I can't cook 2 separate meals!

We got a Wii and Wii Fit for Christmas-plan to try out the Wii Fit later today.

my mom did weight watchers 2 years ago and lost 60lbs with it! She gained a little back, but she needed to b/c IMHO she lost way too much, but I think she looks great now! She walked, but that was the only type of work out she did. She made so many WW meals and desserts too.

We have the Wii too, we have wii active and the dancing one so maybe I could start that up.

I'm trying to do *something*. While I have not gained a lot of weight (I really would be happy with a 10lb loss), I've certainly gotten "fatter" and my clothes are very tight now--even my loose jeans.

I can't decide how I am going to change my eating.

I'm not good at starvation.

I don't want to do WW because they use too much artificial stuff in order to get calorie counts down.

I have to be careful with a lot of "healthy" foods because they bother my digestive tract: i.e., beans, nuts, and many fruits keep me chained to the bathroom.

I hate plain chicken breast with some stupid glaze on top for all my meals. I mean I don't hate chicken but I can't stand some dried up old breast meat every other night. That's certain to derail me.

So, I'm really not sure how I'm going to handle this except that I've got no more junk in the house. That' a start.

But I want to eat better, much less processed, a bit lower carbs.

I'll be reading this thread to see if anyone has something going on that might fit me.

While I am not really looking to lose a lot of weight..
I am going on a more "natural" unprocessed foods diet.
Cutting back on fast food will be the hardest thing for me!

My lunch today as we speak- glass of ovaltine, handful of walnuts and a banana.

I am doing a food journal.

I am writing down everything I eat and drink right now. Then I plan on evolving change out of what I see my patterns are. I am looking up the calories and sugar of the foods I consume.

For me, getting informed helps me make better choices.

I just looked up soda, one of my evils and a can of soda has about 150 calories and about 41 grams of sugar.

The RDA for sugar for a 2,200 calories diet is 40 grams a day. Sooooo......combine that with all the other sugar I eat and I am way over daily. Like insanely over.

Sugar is my first thing to tackle.

I start tomorrow! I'll probably stick with Spark People since I've had luck with it before and it's free. I want to also join a gym eventually.

Good luck everyone. :)

Sugar is my big tackle too. Fortunately, I pretty much kicked the soda habit a few years ago. I will have a soda if I go out to lunch or dinner but that's it. And when I'm eating right I hardly go out to dinner, so that sort of works. Beyond that, I don't know what to do. I do drink 2-3 cups of hot tea a day. Each cup has 2 heaping tsps. of sugar. I cannot use Nutrasweet or Splenda. I did use saccarhin for many years without a problem so I may try to go back to that just to get my sugar grams down.

I also tend to eat a lot of simple carbs these days and, of course, those have many, many hidden sugars.

For my breakfast, the only thing that keeps me going is a big bowl of Puffins cereal mixed with Total Raisin bran. I don't need any snacks if I eat this but again, too many carbs.

I just don't know where to start.

I joined Spark People many years ago. I tried to go back to it but it absolutely overwhelms me know. Man, that site GREW.

I really like the South Beach style of eating. The emphasis on lean meats and vegetables cuts out a lot of processed foods and while I am not going to be able to switch to whole grain carbs I will just modify my consumption of the "white" stuff.

I don't like the "diet" foods available. I would rather eat less of the real thing than to have a "lite" version.

I have to be careful with a lot of "healthy" foods because they bother my digestive tract: i.e., beans, nuts, and many fruits keep me chained to the bathroom.
.

I have this same problem. Pretty much all of my past attempts have been sabotaged in part by my getting really sick and having an upset stomach all the time. I have finally figured out that my IBS and whole grains, raw nuts and those sorts of things just don't go together. And of course that is one of the first things I switch to when trying to lose weight.

You might look at some of the South Beach cookbooks. You can get them at the library or even search for the recipes on line-- most of them are out there by now. We have found quite a few easy and flavorful chicken dishes. My family doesn't care much for chicken either but I found some recipes they actually request!

Cutting out soda except for very rarely is my first goal. I can't stand diet stuff so I only drink the regular and that is not good! I drank my last one at home on NYE at midnight instead of champagne. Told DH not to buy any more of it for me.

Have you tried SparkPeople like Mushy mentioned? I love it for journaling. It is so easy to enter things in and then get an analysis of how I did for the day.

I'm going with a different approach, one that worked beautifully for me years ago. I'm going to cut my food in half, eat only when I *feel* hunger and stop upon the hint of fullness. This way I can eat anything and everything I crave and want without special recipes and foods from the grocery store. Last time I did this, I lost 20+ lbs between April and the end of June and it melted off and was pretty darned easy.
I learned to pay attention to my body and when it was really hungry and when it was just bored or needed comfort. I'll let you know if I make it this go around. :)

Me too! Like with a salad...I can't stand lite dressings on a salad--just give me real Bleu Cheese or Ranch dressing and make it a smaller amount. Or cheese! Fat free cheese is just so gross to me. I'd rather eat smaller amount and taste the real McCoy. Otherwise, I stop and am still searching for something esle to eat to satisfy me. If I eat a little of the real thig, I'm at least satisfied with the taste. :thumbsup2

Glad I'm not the only one. I never used to be like this.

There are a lot of good healthy snacks I see in magazines but once I see it's topped with walnuts or if I have to use hummus, it's a no-go for me. The shame is, I love those foods.

I can eat about 1 tsp of hummus before it bothers me.

I can eat maybe 2-3 walnut halves and then I have to wait a few days before I eat more.

I can't eat more than a slice or two of apple.

I once bought some healthy frozen dinner to take to work. It was high in fiber and I spent two days in intestinal pain and not far from the bathroom.:headache:

It can be very discouraging because I like a lot of aspects of the Mediterranean diet but it's too heavy on the nuts, grains, beans.

A few weeks ago I bought some Pepperidge Farm Cranberry Bread which was delicious (not healthy though) and I guess the dried cranberries did me in. Sheesh.

So, I just don't quite know how to get started .

I have put on 15 lbs since Halloween and I need to get those off. I have always been very successful with South Beach and restarted it today. My problem is I end of up eating the kids' Halloween candy until Thanksgiving. Then the holiday parties and festivities take over. I choose to indulge during that time so I pay for it come January. Good luck everyone!

Trying to follow WW for the most part. I really like their old core program....no counting points or calories. Just follow the list of foods and eat until satisfied.

For breakfast I stir fried a bunch of red peppers, asparagus and onion in EVOO and then added two eggs and made a scramble. Kept me full all morning.

For lunch I made roasted vegetable soup. So yummy and hardly any calories.

Dinner will be a high fiber, low car b tortillas with retried beans, salsa and fat free cheddar.

I find that what works for me is to....
1. Drink 8 glasses of water
2. Protein and fiber at every meal.
3. Carbs in moderation. whole grains and low fat high fiber bread keeps me satisfied.
4. Have to eat every 3 hours to keep me satisfied.
5. Have to have a treat every day, but make it low calorie. Like a chocolate pudding cup with fat free cool whip.
6. Write down everything I eat really helps me not cheat or forget what I ate earlier in the day.

I just have to be conscious when eating. That is half my problem.

I have lost about 50 pounds so far since April and I fully intend on losing a little more and maintain for this year.

I would like to add some of my suggestions that have really helped me.

1. Do NOT deprive yourself! I guarantee anyone on those fad type diets may loose some, BUT they gain it all back and then some when they realize they will be eating nothing grapefruit juice and oysters or whatever fad 'weight loss ' food for the rest of their lives. Trust me, I know.. That atkins diet was AWFUL.. I never thought I would ever hate meat.lol You like chocolate? Allow yourself a small piece everyday, or get you a nice low calorie chocolate desert alternative.

2. Walk everyday! Its cheap...it's cathartic , and its a low impact way to get exercise to lose weight. If you really want to jump start your weight loss, walk 20 minutes a day and do about 20 minutes of medium impact cardio (like exercise bike, step aerobics..etc)

3. Do NOT call it a diet if you are serious about weight loss and maintaining. Diets are things ppl do lose a few pounds before a class reunion then resume their unhealthy habits like scarfing down a whole pint of Ben and Jerry's afterwards. Call it a healthy lifestyle which is the way you intend to be now.

4. You eat out? or do you find yourself having a hard time at the grocery picking out regular items that are healthy? Then get yourself the "Eat This, Not That!" books.. You will be pleasantly and not so pleasantly surprise at fast food you thought was bad, but is great, and so called healthy food that is anything but. Those books helped me out SOOOOO much.

5.NEVER skip breakfast, and eat something with high protein or high fiber in the morning, it helps keep you full so you wont be reaching for something unhealthy during the day before lunch.

Good Luck!:cheer2:

I too have started to change my habits to try and lose weight. I downloaded the free app My Fitness Pal on my iPod touch so I can track my calories and exercise. I gave up soda early last year so that is done, now I need to cut down on white carbs. I agree with the idea of don't deny yourself anything just keep close track of how much you eat. I also try to exercise 3 - 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes at a time.
Good luck to everyone!!! Hope we all have great success.:thumbsup2
