Amanda,
I am so sorry about your wallet. In the sprind, DD and I were having to go to the UK Children's Hospital every Saturday for physical therapy and we had to park in one of those multi-level parking structures. One Saturday, I was having trouble digging my keys out of my purse and put it up on the back of the car so I could dig deeper. A guy walked up behind me and said,"Can I ask you a question?" When I turned around he grabbed my purse and jumped into a car and the got away. Luckily, I was standing there with my car keys. The guy collecting money at the exit said that the garage did not have security cameras and that so many cars were coming in and out that he did not which one I was describing. It created such a mess for me. My entire life was in that person. I had a list of all the credit card account numbers and phone numbers at home, two hours away. I went back to the Radisson to check out and they said that they needed my card to swipe. I told them what happened. They were really nice about it and took care of the room without actually swiping the card. The manager even gave me $50.00 for gas etc. to get home on. We had stayed there four weekends in a row because of the therapy.
Anyway, I went straight home and called and reported all of my credit stollen, etc. The bank was closed, so I could not go in until Monday on bank debit cards. By Monday, the person had spent over $2,000.00 from my personal account and almost $10,000.00 on my business account. Most of this was spent at a
Best Buy on computers, a stereo and television. The bank was really good about it. They sent me back to Lexington to file a police report. I took a copy of it back to the bank and they put all my money back into my account. The last time talked with any of the officers, they were able to get photos of the people using the cards at Best Buy from the store security cameras, but had not been able to identify them.
Now, my major concern is that my Social Security Card and my DD for that matter, and my drivers license with my photo and home address were in there. They have all the information they need about me get credit cards, loans etc. in my name. I am just waiting for the calls to start telling me that I am not paying my bills, etc. I have subscribed to one of those credit protection agencies, who will keep an eye on my credit report and let me know if things start showing up delinquent so that I can deal with it, but they tell me that it's not unusual for it to take six months to a year for these to start showing up because they have to apply, get the cards, use them and default on the payment, etc. before it is reported.
I am not trying to depress you, but I am being realistic. Assuming that your wallet contained your whole life like mine did, there are a lot of serious issues that you need to deal with and watch out for. From time to time, I am still remembering things that was in my purse that I had forgotten about. I lost about $500.00 in cash, but that ended up being the least of my worries. I hope you are able to get everything cancelled quickly and don't have any problems with your credit cards and bank debit cards, etc.
