I just came across an information bulletin on the JetBlue website that says TSA is changing the way some electronic devices are screened at security. Here's what it says:
_____________________________________________

Effective 12:01 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2007, the Transportation Security Administration will implement new checkpoint security screening procedures that will require customers to remove large electronic items from carry-ons for separate screening like current procedures for laptops.

These new procedures apply to items such as:

Video Games
Video Cameras
DVD Players
CD Players

Please keep these new regulations in mind as you pack your carry-on items for travel.

ETA - I looked this up on the TSA website, but it does not sound as though very many passengers will be effected. The TSA website says the change in policy is for full size game consoles and video players. I can't imagine too many passengers that would be carrying these onto a plane. Sorry if I worried anyone.

Here is what the TSA website says:
_______________________________________

Video Game Consoles

Effective August 4, 2007, full-size video game consoles (for example Playstation, X-box, or Nintendo) and DVD players must be removed from their carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening. Laptop computers and video cameras that use cassettes have long been subject to this policy.

Small electronic items, such as cell phones, MP3 players, iPods and portable video game systems do not have to be removed from their carrying cases.

I work at the airport and you would be surprised what people have in their bags.

The last time that I flew in late April the screeners were already asking people to remove video cameras from their bags at the checkpoints.I don't remember whether it was at mco or my home airport though.:)

We're flying this coming Saturday. I'll have my digital camera and docking station for it as well as the iPod charger and iPod, all in my carry-on. My boys will have their Game Boys, a few games, charger and iPods. Sounds like we'll be okay if I'm understanding things right?

DH will have his iPod, video camera and charger. He'll have to take the video camera out of the carry-on then, right?

I'm worried that I'll forget to do something the right way.
Remove shoes. Liquids, aerosols and gels (hair gel, hair spray, deo., toothpaste, etc) all go in a 1 quart bag, 1 per person and no container more than 3 ounces. Take out the video camera.

Sound right? Have I missed or misunderstood anything?

We flew out of Tampa today and it appears that this new policy was in place there. The announcement that the TSA screeners were making was "any electronic device larger than a cell phone needs to be removed from your bag before going through the x-ray screening." Seems like they are treating those items more like laptops have been treated in the past.

No such announcement or screening was done when we flew down on 8/2.
