Day Before Cruise:
We decided to spend the night before the cruise at the Resort on Cocoa Beach. We had a 2-bedroom suite and it was very nice. The kids bedroom had two twin beds, closet, but no TV. Our bedroom had a TV, walk-in closet, whirlpool tub, and shower. There was a full kitchen, living room/dining room combination and a balcony. We had a partial view of the beach and I really liked this hotel. The tennis court, basketball court, and hot tub are on top of the parking lot(sounds weird, but it worked out the way they arranged everything). Shrubs surround the pool so noone can really see in from the outside. It doesn't look this way from the website, but that's how it is.
We had dinner at the onsite Mexican restaurant and it was very good. All the portions are really big. I ordered fajitas for two for me and my DD and my husband ended up helping us out. Everything you need is on that one strip you drive in on, except the Wal-Mart. It's not too far away, but make sure you get directions on how to get there. If you have a few days the Resort on Cocoa Beach would make for a very nice stay.
Day One of Cruise - Sunday 06/05/2005:
We ended up getting to the port around 10:30 since we had to checkout of the resort at 10:00. We were one of the first cars in the parking lot closest to the entrance. Check-in was smooth and easy - we used birth certificates this time around. We'll get passports when we have to next year.
The terminal is nice and there is lots of room to sit. All the TV's played the same thing to keep young children occupied, the replica of the ship is pretty cool, and I liked that you could go outside and take pictures with the Wonder in the background.
Boarding began at 12:00. We ate lunch in Parrot Cay and the buffet was very nice. I did like the seasoned peel-n-eat shrimp and other offerings they had. We wanted to sit inside so we could get some cool air. Our rooms were ready at 1:30.
We went to our room, which was #8562, and I found it to be very spacious. I'm glad we reserved this one for the extra space with the trunk at the end.
We had a memory box from our TA as a gift
and all of our excursion tickets were laid out on the dresser. Our dining rotation was PTAA. When we started unpacking my husband noticed that a pair of his shorts were missing and then I noticed my outfit from the day before was missing. Guess what? I washed our clothes at the resort and left them in the dryer.
Well my husband would not leave his clothes at the resort for 5 days so he went back to get our laundry. He returned with a tidy bag in tow (the resort had folded our clothes and put our last name on the bag) and was able to get the same parking space we had originally - thanks to Disney parking attendants. Well I finished unpacking and we went to explore the ship a little. Since I registered the kids for the club online, we went to look at the kids club and get the beeper. The kids club was pretty small from what I could see, but the kids were willing to try it out at the time.
We were on time for the boat drill and after that we watched them untie the ropes that held the Wonder in place as we sailed away. We caught the beginning of the sailaway party, then we went to our room and waved goodbye from the balcony to lots of people. It seemed that everybody was
to us - there was a lady with two Mickey hands that waved as long as we could see her, there were people fishing that stopped to wave, people sitting outside a restaurant waving... I guess it's a weekly event for people that live there.
Since we had 2nd dinner seating, our show was at 6:30. The first show was Hercules. Some parts of it were inspired, while other parts were
Now I know why everybody is divided about Hercules. It's the oddest one of the three. I can't say that I didn't like it, but I can't say that it was great. On a scale of 1:10 I'd go for a 7.
Our first dinner was in Parrot Cay. I had BBQ ribs and they were delicious. My daughter had what I had and my son had what every other 9 year old has to have just about every day - chicken fingers. Desert was
for the kids. I ordered lemon meringue pie to go and my husband had chocolate cake. DH also had my lemon meringue pie for an after dinner snack while I was asleep. That's OK, it's not like I needed it.
After dinner we went to the shops to look around, then back to our balcony for the night. Have you ever noticed how pitch black it is at night in open water? We couldn't see anything but blackness - it was kind of scary.
Day Two of Cruise - Monday 06/06/2005:
This was Nassau day. Since I had gone on the Dolphin Excursion the last time I was in the Bahamas on another cruiseline (it was awesome by the way), I decided to try a tour of Nassau this time so the kids could find out something about the city. Well we opted for the Ardastra Gardens and City Tour. This next part is my opinion and my opinion only [I was really surprised at how "down" and in poor condition everything looked. Even the government buildings looked dirty and in need of repair. When we got to the gardens I guess I was expecting a zoo like Lowry Park Zoo or something similar in Florida. Ardastra Gardens is nothing like what we have here in the US. It is very small, and has a handful of birds and animals in cages. The highlight for them I guess is the flamingo show. The guy says some commands like "forward march" and the flamingos go around to everyone in a circle so that they can take pictures. It was OK, but I would not suggest the tour to anyone for his or her first time in Nassau. I think in order for you to enjoy the island and want to come back, you would need to do something touristy - like the Dolphin encounter, swimming with stringrays, visiting Atlantis or something like that.] Again, just my opinion.
Today's show was Mark Nizer - a juggling act. This guy was excellent. Even when he didn't finish a trick (this happened twice) he was still excellent. I could have gone to his show twice. Dinner was really good this night also at Triton's. I had Beef tenderloin and it was really, really tender. I can't remember what everyone else had except my son - chicken fingers - again. The characters came through while we were eating - Mulan, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, Belle and a few others. Of course I didn't take my camera to dinner, so I didn't get any pictures. For those of you who haven't gone yet take your camera to each dinner. You may be surprised who you can get a picture with.
Day Three of Cruise - Tuesday 06/07/2005:
Today is Castaway Cay Day!
We had two excursions reserved - the ecotour
and the banana boat ride
. Everybody read Webmaster Reginas account of this thing. It is absolutely correct. They put me and DD first and half way through they stopped so someone else could take the lead. Having never ridden one of these things before I thought I was going plenty fast. No, Mr. speedboy (some teenager with obvious previous experience) left me in the dust. (so did everyone else but that's not the point). We were jumping up and down on the waves and I kept thinking we were going to turn the thing upside down. The guy at the end kept motioning for me to go faster but I didnt feel comfortable doing that so I didn't. I hated having my bottom jumping off the seat everytime I sped up. Anyway, my DD kept screaming like we were going to be killed,
so we went whatever speed kept our bottoms on the seat. The end tourguy didn't seem to be very happy with me, but oh well.
The banana boat ride IMO was better. They told us they could only go 15 mph, but after that ecotour I was extremely happy with that speed. They told us to lean into the middle when we turned so noone would fall off. Well my DD for some reason kept going towards the outside every time we took a turn. DH always had to catch her just in time. More screaming like we were going to be killed.
The BBQ was really good. We ate after the banana boat ride was over, about 1:00. They didn't have my DS's favorite food (yes, of course chicken fingers) on the buffet line, but one of the cast members got it for him as soon as he asked. They didn't have french fries either, but they got that for my DD to go with her cheeseburger so they were happy. I had ribs again. They were good, but not as good as in the dining room.
We loved the layout of Castaway Cay. The water was clean and the beach was not crowded at all. I reserved tubes and floats online, but it didn't seem like they would have run out. This was the best day of the cruise.
Tonight's show was Golden Mickey's. This show was fabulous. I don't know which I could have sat through more, Golden Mickeys or Mark Nizer. The singing was fabulous, the costumes were fabulous, it was just a really great show. Golden Mickeys and Mark Nizer get a perfect 10.
Dinner was in Animator's Palate. They did not do the color show tonight, and I kept waiting for it. Then I asked and they said they would do it tomorrow. Tonight I had Crab Cake, Gumbo Soup, Shrimp and Scallop Pasta for dinner. It was very tasty. The Pirate Party
started in the dining room with the waiter's bringing out Baked Alaska and forming a conga line and making everybody get up and dance around the restaurant. That was crazy fun. The rest of the party continued on deck 9 with the Cast members singing and dancing. They also sold glow-in-the-dark things. I think it was the most fun if you were in the thick of things on deck 9 in front of the stage. If you just want to look you can go to deck 10.
Day Four of Cruise - Wednesday 06/08/2005:
This was our at sea day. We had reserved Palo for brunch at 10:30 so we sent the kids to the pool and to have lunch at Pluto's Dog House. When we got to Palo we had the tour of what was offered. There was a dessert table (nothing interested me), a pizza shelf (pepperoni, mushroom, vegetable, and some other kind I can't remember), cracked crab legs, plain peel-n-eat shrimp, different breads, crackers, cheese, fruit, yogurt, lunch meats. The menu had chicken cacciatore, omelets, and other offerings. Even though what I listed is a lot, I really wasn't impressed. The server was very good and attentive, but I didn't see anything that was "out of this world". For the most part, IMO, it was a plain buffet brunch. I think I would have rather eaten in Parrot Cay at the usual buffet breakfast. I know the brunch is a popular thing, but it just wasn't for me. Is it possible the Wonder and Magic do it differently?
We caught the matinee of Disney Dreams and I know this won't be popular either -- but I hated it. Even the kids were not too impressed. I thought it was boring. I'd give this show a 5. Unfortunately my husband went to the two shows that we didn't like that well (Hercules and Disney Dreams) and he missed the ones we thought were really good (Golden Mickeys and Mark Nizer).
We tried the last round of Bingo and bought the 6 cards for $35. We didnt win, but saw two kids win several thousand dollars Blast it (Oh, I mean how WONDERful for them and their parents)
Dinner on the last night was also in Animator's Palate. This time they did the color show. Tonight's menu was OK but not really good like previous nights. I had steak and baked potato. The steak was a little tough, but the other nights made up for it.
The kids went to the "Til We Meet Again" gathering while I packed. They got a few shots with Mickey, Minnie, and Snow White. They also said that it was jam packed and people were not too nice trying to get pictures so they left after each had gotten a picture with a character.
Day Five of Cruise - Thursday 06/09/2005:
Since we had 2nd seating, breakfast was at 8:00. We ate in Animator's Palate one last time. When we went to disembark, we got a porter and went straight through without anyone asking to see anything except our driver's license. We gave them the paper that declares what you bought, he glanced at it and we were out the door. We left about 9:00 and got home around 11:45am. It was a lot of fun, but we didn't book another cruise while onboard. We'll either do a different cruiseline next time or catch the Magic that has two stops at Castaway Cay. I think that everyone that has children (any age) should try DCL at least once. Everyone will like.
Other Observations/Suggestions/and other Ramblings
a. They should take pictures of each and every Banana Boat Ride, Ecotour, parasail, and any other excursion since you dont want to take your good camera on these escapades. They would make a lot of money and everyone wants to see how they look on whatever contraption youre on.
b. Scoops should stay open a lot later.
c. DCL should expand merchandise in shops, very limited IMO
d. Found out Wonder does not do the 3D crystal images, only the Magic
e. My kids never went to the kids club, so I can't rate it. They were always so busy.
f. The arcade is very small
g. Loved verandah, enough room for everyone. I thought wed have episodes of someone needing to go to the bathroom really bad (the one with the toilet) while someone else was in there. Never happened.
h. Never went to Blanket Beach Buffet, always ate in Parrot Cay for breakfast except that last morning
i. Stateroom host and dining hosts were for the main part very good. Although when my son spilled a glass of water and the main server said to him the next time you spill, Ill make you clean it up I wasnt very happy. My husband seemed to think that he was joking, but I didnt see any smiles coming from him so I disagree. Anyway, I left the assistant server $20 more than what was suggested and $10 more for the main server, so that made the assistant server get the same amount as him. The head server just got what was suggested and the stateroom host got $20 more than what was suggested.
j. Episode with claustrophobic woman in elevator - you all know how small the elevators are right? Well, we got on one that had the glass in the back and two more people got on and this woman in the back starts screaming and clawing her way to the front (yes clawing) saying that she's very claustrophobic and had to get off the elevator. Not trying to be mean, but how often do you think you'll get an elevator all to yourself and keep it that way for the full ride?
k. Found breakfast order sheets in drawer when checking for leaving things last night of cruise. So if you're planning on ordering breakfast, look in the top middle dresser drawer for the order sheets.
l. Everything was always clean. The Wonder is a beautiful ship.
