02-03-07 Heavenly Eastern Trip Report, family of 5

We woke at 8:45 and opened the curtains to bright sunshine, although I could tell it had rained a little. There was a huge mountain out there with houses that looked like they were going to slide right off the edge. Obviously, we’d arrived in St. Maarten. We had previously booked the See & Sea Submarine excursion for 1:15pm but since being switched to early dinner had to cancel. Our whims were going to take us. DH and I joked, wondering how our TMs were feeling since they’d been up late drinking mojitos with us and had to be up early for a catamaran snorkel excursion at 7:30am (FYI, their review of that was that it was okay, but they did get rained on and there was no protection...and the snorkel excursion they did the following day in St. John, which they said was less expensive, they liked 10x better). I finally got my wish to breakfast in Lumiere’s. The eggs benedict is out of this world!!

Disembarked ship by probably 10am. We didn’t stop at any of the port shops and headed to the water taxi where it was $10 for the whole family (kids under 12 are free). It was a 5-min ride that took us to the downtown shopping district where there was also a nice, uncrowded beach lined by sort of a boardwalk with restaurants and more shops. Everywhere we looked there were locals holding signs for excursions, scenic rides, transport to Marigot, etc. We couldn’t decide exactly what we wanted to do, so when a man approached us asking if we wanted to rent a car for the day for $60. Sure, why not (as long as DH is driving, that is). Nazim, what genuinely nice guy! While we waited for his coworker to come pick us up to drive us to the rental place, Nazim gave us the low down on the island, highlighted some stuff on a map we shouldn’t miss, and recommended shopping sites. We were at the “business” after a 10 min drive, and I had to stifle a giggle. Hertz this place was not. More like a garage on the first floor of a neighborhood house with about five very used looking vehicles parked in the driveway under a sign that said ‘Nasa Car Rental’ (don’t get excited like I did - no Jimmie Johnson or Kasey Kahne in sight). We opted for a Jeep type vehicle. I’ve heard lots of people go ‘topless’ on St. Maarten after all. ;) I was nervous at first since we were obviously flying by the seat of our pants, but it was all good.

:drive: Driving in St. Maarten was an experience! The roads are krazy kaflookey with no rhyme or reason and not well-marked. What good is a map with street names if there are no street signs to guide you? Heading northeast first (after a stop at the first gas station since the tank was on E), we got lost at least a dozen times. Some of those off the beaten path streets, though, wound up holding some of the most beautiful homes and breathtaking views we saw that day. It was neat to see the culture in action too. Boys and girls in plaid uniforms, waiting to catch the afternoon school bus. (I assumed the St. Maarten French side follows the same midday break school schedule as France itself?) The supermarkets were funny, small buildings with maybe four aisles of product. Tiny little one-room buildings painted bright yellow and red with “Robbie’s lottery” signs seemed to be on every other block. Made me curious how their lottery system works, and who the heck Robbie is? (Hm, perhaps he owned one of the spectacular homes we saw!) We passed Oyster Beach and Dawn Beach and Orient Beach. Just gorgeous!!

Our initial intent was to drive all the way around the island, but after an hour of driving just to look at scenery the girls were bored so we turned around and backtracked until we got to Cole Bay and Simpson Bay. The view on that drive was just as gorgeous, but strangely different with more boat docks and upscale shops. We got out and browsed a shopping area and I’m embarrassed to say we had lunch at KFC. I know. Not very daring for such adventurous people, but what can I say? The kids were clamoring for nuggets and I once had a bad taco experience in Mexico....long story for another day. We had hoped to make it to Marigot but we still had shopping and the beach to do and by this time it was nearing 1pm so we headed back in the direction of Nasa Car.

I had DH drop me and the girls at the place Nazim had recommended. It was called Rima. And it was a bargain shoppers dream! All the stuff I’d seen in the open air markets and downtown shops -- it was all here, sold separately or in bulk bags for much, much lower prices. I could tell it was a wholesale type place b/c locals were in and out buying big lot bags of trinkets, obviously to take back to their booths to mark up and sell to unwitting tourists. I dropped $100 in that place but you should see all the stuff I got! If you’re interested in finding this Rima place it’s clearly marked on the free maps locals hand you as soon as you get off the ship. It’s a big yellow building with flags on top, from the water taxi pier two blocks straight ahead then five blocks to the left.

This is the beach at the pier a water taxi drive from the ship. Any of you who were on the same cruise see themselves?

We walked back toward the clean, white sandy beach at the water taxi drop-off pier (I think the area’s called Great Bay). We sat down in some cushioned lounge chairs and were told they were only sold in pairs for $10. DH bargained and got him down to one chair for $5. We really only needed the chair to put our packages on to keep them from getting sandy. DH went up to the Barefoot Restaurant right at the pier and got us a couple mudslides and some appetizers, some sort of shrimp roll and spicy peanut butter chicken satays (one of my all time favorites). Both were really good!!

:beach:
We spent about 1 1/2 hours on the beach which had soft, gentle waves. It was perfect, save for the fact of the roving salespeople (at least 5 within the hour) who kept coming up to us to try to sell us marked up jewelry we’d already bought at Rima. We walked the boardwalk a little and popped into a shop called Pirate something. DH found a t-shirt to wear to the pirate party that had a skull and crossbones on it for $5!! Good quality too! They had women’s stuff as well but I didn’t buy anything since my pirate night costume was ready to go. We were back on ship by 3:45pm.

For pirate night I’d created some outfits for me and the girls, having snagged some eyepatches and swords and hook arms from the $1 bin at Target). We felt very in-theme and DH was ultimately glad he’d gotten into character with his red t-shirt.

** DINNER REVIEW ** My and DHs appy choice were the same and one we remembered loving our first cruise: banana rolled in toasted coconut. It sounds so simple, but being two of my favorite flavors I’d actually dreamed about this delight since the last cruise (see, Jeff Probst, I could be a Survivor!). My salad was jerk chicken w/greens. It was good -- but again with the lack of spices! I was really frustrated with this dish b/c I could understand making some dishes bland to appeal to more palates, but jerk chicken is SUPPOSED to have kick and people who don’t like spice wouldn’t order it in the first place, so why not just go for it? Waaah! D said the same thing about the gumbo soup he got. DH and I both opted for the macadamia encrusted mahi (dishes including that word ‘encrusted’ get me every time) and smashed potatoes. Very good!! DD11 opted for the adult menu tonight and her spicey spaghetti w/shrimp and scallops was the best dish on the table. They were very nice size shrimp and actually did have the spice it promised. Dessert was bananas flambe, which just can’t be missed. Deliciouso! DD6 had finally diverted from her standby Mickey bar for the first time and got the rum raisin ice cream sundae. She loved it so much she tilted the glass up like it was a sippy cup, trying to savor the last remanants of melted ice cream in the bottom. (She does have some semblance of table manners, I promise.)

So we’re munching away at our delicious desserts and as I’m midsentence with TMW about the scrumptious flambe when who appears at my table but the one and only, polite front desk girl. :sad2: All right already! What, is she going to stalk me now? She apologized for interrupting our dinner but she hadn’t had time to call me earlier in the day (gee, what a bummer). She wanted to let me know that an engineer had visited our room that afternoon and hadn’t heard anything. Was I still hearing the beeps? Well, yes, I was and DH was now too, but really, really, it’s OKAY. She continued and said she’d checked into it and there’s wasn’t a single room she could move us to that was big enough to accommodate our whole family. I hadn’t asked for another room. At this point I was on the verge of being agitated, so I said, “I truly appreciate your concern and all your efforts to get to the bottom of the beeping, but I wouldn’t really want to move all our stuff to another stateroom anyhow (unless you’re offering me the Roy O. Disney Suite, in that case I’m up for anything), and I swear that the earplugs have solved the problem just fine. How about if we hear the beeps and they really, really bug us, WE will call YOU.” Catching my drift, she apologized again and wished us a good trip and left the table.

After dinner we went to Preludes to catch Jack Sparrow, who was BY FAR the best character appearance ever! He had the mannerisms down pat! Freaky fingers and crazy eyeball movements! He was so believable that DD6 swore up and down he was not just ‘in costume’, but an actual pirate! Then DH graciously took all the girls to see the big screen version of High School Musical (you’d think these kids would eventually tire of that flick!).

I tried without success (sorry!) to enlarge this photo so you could really see his googly eyes. Freaky!

I headed to Shutters. Not my first visit. As a matter of fact, my nightly stop in Shutters was one of my favorite moments each day. At some point earlier I’d ordered the 10 package of 6x8's (which are actually 5x7's with borders). I think it was $85. Pictures of us as a family are rare b/c DH or I are always one of the photo takers. Boy was it difficult to choose cuz there were so many good shots. I’ll tell you, though, by the time I left Shutters this particular night I was just steaming mad. Here’s why.

The 6x8 photos on the racks all had these cutsey little borders (a colorful theme relating to whatever character is in the photo, the name of the restaurant you’d dined in, and always a date stamp) -- but I didn’t want every last one of my 10 photos to be so themed. I wanted at least a couple simple pix of us as a family without, say, orange swirly colored border with writing that says “Lumiere’s, Disney Cruise, February 3-10, 2007". So I ask the Shutters guy if I can get some of these photos printed without the border and dates. “Nope. They come out of the camera like that. There’s no way to change them.” Heavy sigh!

So then I get to the section from formal night where we’d had our photo taken with the ship silhouette in the background. Yes! Fantastic pictures of us with NO borders. I want to buy them. But every last one is an 8x10 and I’ve already paid for the 10 package of 6x8's. So I go over to Shutters guy again and ask if we can have the photos resized to 6x8 or even 5x7. “I’m sorry, ma’am. We can’t do that. Photos come as they are.” Argh!! An 8x10 by itself is $20. Okay, not terribly outrageous, but to me it’s more a principle kind of thing. I probably would have bought more photos had they come in a better variety of size and with less frilly borders and words written on them.

After the Shutters experience I headed up to Deck 9 in order to get a nice limey mojito to help cool my jets. Around 8:15 I met up with TMH/TMW to try to score good seats for the pirate party (a full hour and a half before it was to start, mind you). Man, were the stars looking down on us! Just as we were passing the best two tables in the house a group stood up and vacated one of the tables, leaving it prime for us. You know, one of those tables right in the center of the square made by Pinocchio’s bar/pizza, the two hot tubs, and Goofy’s pool with a great view of the Dumbotron, dance floor, stage, AND the black space in the sky where the fireworks go off. We were toasting ourselves to our own good fortune. Alas, some bad news was coming....

I walked around the corner to take a look see if buffets were up yet. Yup, there they was, in all their splendor. The pirate buffet setup is my favorite cuz it just looks so cool and almost borders on scary (good scary, though).

Good Lord what the DCL chefs can do with watermelon!
scan0008.jpg

I was snapping away with my camera, wanting to get closeups of everything when I realized that I couldn’t get close. Then I realized the reason I couldn’t (dum, dum, dum, dramatic music)...was because there were rope barricades around the buffet and the soda bar too. That could mean one thing and one thing only, sickness had struck the ship. Dangit all to hell!! This had been a fear of mine. Dare I say that following the initial pit in the stomach feeling, all’s I could think was, “Better those poor souls than me!” (C’mon now, ya’ll would have thought the same thing! I’m just being honest. Hold onto your horses though, cuz karma’s a beeach. There’s payback.) :crazy2:

As the official party start neared, Deck 9 started filling up, which lead to a near smackdown between TMH and another family. This group of people, totally ignoring that we were sitting there enjoying our view, came and climbed up onto the half-wall that separates the deck from the dance floor area, which completely blocked our view of anything except the sky. TMH and a guy at the table right next to us (who’d been sitting there even longer than us) were pretty peeved and TMH went up to the group and said, “We’ve not been patiently waiting here for over an hour just to catch a view of your butts and backs.” I’m pretty reserved and felt a little bit bad for the family that he was coming on so strong, but TMH was right, and justified I think! After a few minutes and some further choice words from TMH and the guy next to us, the butting family did finally move elsewhere. The girls got back back from their movie just in time for the festivies to begin. The fireworks were the topper to a perfectly perfect day! :p

Tomorrow, Day 4 - St. Thomas, people miss the boat, and a puker...

Stay tuned!

I'm getting the dreaded red "x" where all of your pics are inserted! Any way to fix that??!!

Aw, bummer! I hope I'm not doing something wrong. I just learned how to post photos yesterday by reading a step by step guide. I'm, like, totally stupid when it comes to imgs and jpgs and things that are not cut and dry simple. Sorry I can't help!

Anybody else getting the red X's?

Or better yet, know how to fix them?

When I right-click a red X and go to properties, and cut-and-paste the addy that's give for the picture, I can pull the pic up fine. Do you have IMG tags around the photo links? Or even easier, just hit the little icon for "insert image" and it will put the correct tags there.

Not sure what else could be the problem... but the links themselves seem to be fine!

So you can't see them within the text either, Gina?

I've been doing them the img or /img with brackets around. On my screen the pix are there. Let me try that insert button below. Tell me if this works better:

Nope, still just red X's, with both IE and Firefox. :(

...but what is the "beeping sound"!!!!!:lmao: Hopefully, we'll soon find out.

Keep it coming. I was on the same cruise but we had different experience, No kids in my pack to late nights for us as almost 1 am and some 2 am.

Keep the report coming.

I can tell you even we had a great trip.

PierrerGirl - Glad you can see the pix now. I switched most of the photos to a different base server. Apparently, Kodak, firewall’s the pictures you post on their free upload site. Oh well, problem solved.

MyLove - If the kids clubs hadn’t closed at 11pm or midnight I would have been right there beside you until 2am!! :) I’ve always wondered if the ship is really hopping at that hour or empty or what? Write a trip report! I’m really enjoying reading what the other 02/03 cruisers have to say about the same trip I was on.

Pluto - Ah, the beeping sound......what a mystery!!

Mom of 2 - Next thing on my list is coming up soon. I’m halfway finished.

Littlekid - Thanks! Glad you're enjoyin' it!

Woke up in St. Thomas. At this point, we realized how fortunate we were to be having such perfect weather. Warm, but not too hot, barely any rain except maybe two quick sprinkles. As I said previously, I was disappointed to see that as the ship docked our starboard view was again of the port gangway, although we could see a few pretty houses on the mountain and we the cable ride thing that takes you to the top.

The way-past-bedtime nights had finally caught up with my girls and all three were grumpy. Especially DD6, who really didn’t want to get out of bed. This day, she didn’t have a choice. Since St. Maarten is considered a foreign country, when the ship arrives in St. Thomas (a U.S. island) there’s an early morning customs check. It starts at 6:45am for people with shore excursions and goes up in 15 min increments depending which deck you’re on. We went at 7:30am since we were doing a non-Disney excursion with a local tour guide, Sunny Liston, which didn’t start until 11am. Customs was quick and painless. Just a matter of going to the theater, walking front stage, handing them your passport, allowing them to stamp your hand, then leaving through the side door.

I don’t know what we passed, if it was the ship’s laundry or what, but leaving out the front of the theater caught quite a whiff of some strong smelling bleach. DD6, who had already been whiny, started complaining that the smell was really gross. Shortly thereafter, I heard the words no mom ever wants to hear (and especially not on vacation), “Mommy, I think I’m going to throw up.” Oohhhhhhh NO! (Um-hm, I hear ya’ll snickering at my karma coming back to bite me!) We quick dashed into the nearest bathroom where I spent five minutes holding back her hair, trying to comfort her, and also wanting to cry. I had flashbacks to all those precruise days when my girls got home from school and I marched them straight to the sink and the antibacterial soap. And apparently all the ‘fun wipes’ we’d rubbed between our fingers upon entry to any ship restaurant hadn’t done the trick. It was especially ironic that DD6 was the one driving the porcelain bus b/c she was the only one who never protested when I nagged her to wash up. It was DD11 and DD8 who kept referring to me as the germ police.

We all went back to our cabin and ordered pastries from room service, contemplating what to do next. The pastries came and to our surprise, DD6 said she was hungry so I let her have one. Things started looking up, but it was short-lived. DD6 started to cough and then ran to the bathroom where she hurled again. Sigh!

We decided not to call the infirmary right away b/c I was so afraid of the quarantine (don’t flame me yet, okay?) and I wanted to wait and see what was really going on with DD6. After all, there was no fever and she wasn’t listless. She was looking and acting like her normal spunky little self. I volunteered to stay back while DH took the other two girls on the Sunny Liston tour. I get to travel more than he does and his time was due to be the one having the fun. Hanging back would give me time to get some laundry done after all, and I had a good book to read. DD6 took it very well that the beach was not in the cards for her. I kissed DH, DD11 and DD8 goodbye and watched from the verandah as they got into the cute little truck-tram thingy and drove off. Poor DD6. Poor me.

Unfortunately, not having gone on the Sunny Liston tour myself I can’t say much about it. By DH’s report it was a fantastic day and the island was gorgeous. Sunny and his wife, very friendly locals, run the tour by themselves. First there’s a shopping stop. You can choose what time you want to start depending on how much shopping you want to do. Leaving at 11, I’d chosen the shortest amount of shopping time, one hour, which DH said was not nearly enough. Having a person like DH, who loathes shopping more than anything else in the world, say that means if you do the Sunny tour you should REALLY choose the 9am leave time to give you three hours to shop. Then Sunny drove them around for a guided sightseeing tour with one stop at a park which held the highest point on the mountain and another scenic overlook where Sunny gave a little history talk and pointed out some of the more interesting aspects of the island. Sunny’s website had said you could choose from three beaches to stop at, but DH said he was never asked and just taken to Sapphire Beach. DD11 and DD8 had a great time swimming and playing in the sand, but they did remark that there was lots of seaweed. DH said the “resort” there at the beach was kind of dumpy and the food service came from off site which would have taken a long time. His biggest regret was not having brought something to eat b/c they wound up just getting snacks from the little convenience type store there. Gosh darn cuz I’d packed Ziploc baggies to stash Topsiders goodies into for island days. We forgot to use them!

Scenic view of St. Thomas including the Magic and the Mariner of the Seas:
100_0150.jpg

BTW, if anybody reading this has also done a Sunny Liston tour I’d be curious to know your impressions of it. Specifically, if you were asked your preference of beach stop. DH said he really enjoyed the tour for the price ($25/pp) and he’d do Sunny again in a heartbeat.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, it took the all of an hour for me to realize that whatever was wrong with DD6 was probably not serious. THANK GOD! She wouldn’t stay laying down. She kept going to the verandah and happily calling/waving to people below. She devoured all three remaining pastries room service had brought, after which she nagged me to get her something else to eat. She asked repeatedly if we could go find daddy at the beach. She skipped (not walked) down to Deck 7 to help me do two loads of laundry (which, BTW, timing wise was perfect b/c the laundry room was a ghost town). Don’t worry, I didn’t let her touch anything. I was being a very responsible mom-to-possibly-sick-child. But after five hours of observing her and seeing not even the slightest little hiccup, I felt secure that the puke episode must have been a reaction to the bleach smell she inhaled. She is a sensitive kid in that area. Even thinking about gross stuff makes her stomach feel icky.

At 3pm we made a jaunt to Topsiders which, since there was still serious sickness on the ship elsewhere, was no longer self serve. The line wasn’t long since it was a port day. DD6 asked for a loaded plate, which she got and ate every last drop of back at the cabin without incident. My big confession #2 is that I/we didn’t utter a single word to anybody about the morning’s occurrence, not Ana and not even our TMs. I lied and said DD6 was just tired and that’s why we hung back instead of going on land. I know, I’m bad. But I was just so afraid it would be mistaken for true sickness and the remainder of our vacation would be ruined by quarantine. All told, I was right that she wasn’t contagious-sick. DD6 carried on the rest of the day and the rest of the week without skipping a beat.

By 4pm I called the all clear and took her to the outside aft deck. We got some ice cream and caught the view of the rest of the island. From the ship, I thought St. Thomas to be even more beautiful than St. Maarten! Cleaner too. Not to say that St. Maarten was dirty, but I watched a man in a little vacuum buggy repeat a sucky pattern back and forth along the port sidewalks all day long.

The rest of our clan returned from their exciting day on the island. Everybody was showering up for dinner, which is where I was when I heard the loudspeaker roll calling the names of people they knew had left the ship but hadn’t returned. After my shower I went outside and watched the crew getting the ship ready to cast off. The metal gangway ramp was being hauled by forklift from the Magic to the RC Mariner of the Seas which was parked right in front of us. Then I heard a little commotion and looked over to see a couple standing on the sidewalk in front of where the Magic’s entry door was, obviously trying to talk to somebody about how to get back onboard. A minute later, there came the forklift back from the RC gangway to the Magic’s, bringing the metal ramp so the couple could reboard. As they walked onto the ramp all us folks on our verandahs were cheering and clapping. It was pretty funny. Less than 5 minutes later (promptly 5:05) our ship was casting off from the port sidewalk. Boy, that couple was lucky! I’d almost witnessed, firsthand, the true meaning of “missing the boat”. I later heard rumors that there actually were people who didn’t make it back onboard. Gee, I hope they really enjoyed St. Thomas! :upsidedow

As we pulled out of port we got a closeup view of the Mariner of the Seas. It was humongous, that ship! Definitely bigger than the Magic, or at least taller. We could see the rock climbing wall that’s always touted in RC commercials and it looked as though most of the rooms have balconies. It really peaked my interest to see what another ship is like inside b/c that thing was pretty impressive. Could I ever give up the Magic thought? Doubtful!

**DINNER REVIEW** Appy, I had risotto with shrimp. Scrumptious! DH/me both had the very good mozzarella/tomato salad. Main course I had the chef recommended sirloin. Why he recommends it, I don’t know, cuz it wasn’t anything special. DH, again, was happy with his main course choice in the smoked salmon w/pasta. Said it was his favorite thus far (but I think he’d already said that three times. I’m glad he enjoyed his food so much!). My desserts (yes, that’s plural) made up for what my main course lacked: warm banana bread something or other, followed by a triple chocolate turrine. The turrine was mind-blowing. Light and smooth and surprisingly not too chocolately, good for when your full if you KWIM. DH, for the first time ever, chose a dessert he didn’t like, oreo cheesecake that came with a bottom layer of some sort of sour apple filling that was too sour and didn’t mesh with the rest of the pie.

After quick stops at Shutters and the character greets of the night (Lilo, Stitch, and Alice) DD11 went to her club for her camp out. The other girls were dying to go to Goofy’s Giggle Gala. DD8 knew how much fun this was from the last cruise and this time was no different. The kids went clad in their PJs. Goofy visited and the kids got to tell him a story. They made pillowcases to keep (this cruise they were of much better quality than the last). Ally told stories and played some kind of trivia game where as the kids answer correctly they get to pick out silly clothes to put on the CMs. Another CM, Peter, allowed the kids to face paint HIM for a change. Oddly enough, DD8/DD6 both say “painting Peter” was one of the funnest things they did onboard. Go figure! I guess they’re easily amused.

With the kids away, adults will play. We and the TMs headed to Promenade to play 80's TV trivia. I’m proud to announce we won the game - and Mickey medals - and were deemed king and queen couch potatoes of the ship. Yahoo! We popped into Studio Sea for the 80's dance party but were disappointed to find there were no 80's character people, just 80's music playing. I’d heard from the DIS boards that there’s some 80's party that can’t be missed, complete with dressed up CMs. When that took place, I don’t know.

To wrap up an already fairly lucky day, can you believe that I had not one single call or dinner pop-in from polite front desk girl the entire day? I was so glad for that! Yes, the source of the beeps had me dying with curiosity, and of course I’d hope they’d magically come to an abrupt halt. But it seemed obvious after the first day that nobody knew what it was or how to stop it and it wasn’t a total trip-ruiner since we were sleeping find with the earplugs. Actually, by the end of the trip we’d realized if were really quiet during the day we could also hear them then. DD11 and I got to the point where we were trying to sing and dance along to them.

Coming up, our last full day at sea, boo-hoo!

Great trip report! An interesting fact that we learned while at Palo's brunch Thursday (we also had to be served) that when Disney has 10 reported cases of passengers with flu like symptoms they go to high altert. (Meaning no self serve on the food buffets or drink station.) Our server told us most cruise lines go to high alert once 200 to 300 passengers are sick! What a difference!!!

Thanks! I love little info tidbits like that. I was curious about that anyhow b/c it really didn't seem to me like there were lots of people "missing" (like at dinner - which was more or less a full house each night) for them to be on an alert like that. Did you know anybody, personally, who got sick?

We had Palo brunch Thursday as well. We probably sat right next to each other! That part of the report is coming up.

We got a whole extra hour of sleep since we reverted back to normal time zone. It was noticeably cooler as I stepped out onto the verandah, but definitely still fantastic weather!

Days at sea are the best. And today was the day I’d especially looked forward to, Palo brunch day. Yeah baby! There is nothing on this Earth like Palo’s food and service! First off, P.J. the maitre'd is most accommodating. I’d done the reservations in those wee hours 90 days out and booked a table for two. As the cruise week progressed and we became better friends with our TMs we decided really wanted them to join us. So Wed night, TMW and I went up to Palo and asked P.J. if it was possible to have them added to our reservation. He barely glanced at his book and said, “I’m sure that’s fine. We’ll make it happen.” And he did!

The brunch was as phenomenal as expected! We started off with a champagne and raspberry cocktail. It was delicious, but next time I'll forgo it cuz it was too filling. I'll need more room for food! DH recommends: caviar w/onion and egg, and the shrimp and raw tuna shooter. I recommend: asparagus soup (which is buttery and has lump crabmeat in it even though the little tag card doesn’t say so), the feta wrapped w/eggplant, and the asparagus wrapped in proscuitto topped with hollandaise. Both DH and I absolutely adore the stollen topped with fresh fruit and as an added bonus add muesilix on the side. I also had the veal with asparagus, which was very good but too heavy for brunch. Everybody at our table had some version of eggs benedict, one served with spinach, one with regular bacon, and another one I can’t recall -- all great! We had several desserts too, served in small little portions for more sampling potential. I was so stuffed after brunch I felt ill. But it was a good ill, if that's possible.

Bummer that Palo still fell under the onboard sickness you-can’t-serve-yourself thing. The waitstaff were all busy waiting on tables and there were only three people there to help us fill their plates. More help was needed. I got reprimanded cuz I got impatient and tried to sneak a couple things with the tongs when the server's back was turned. It didn’t ruin the overall experience though. If I had to, I’d wait on line at Palo’s longer than an American Idol contestant waits to sing for Simon! **HOT TIP** The other drawback to doing Palo on this day is that it conflicts with the special midship appearance of all the princesses together. Trying to get the girls into their clubs and skirt the hoopla took quite a bit of cunning, especially considering the club entrance is right above the Atrium!

Ship sickness was also to blame for the galley tour being cancelled. Waah! I did the tour by myself last time and DH really wanted to go with this time. The information about the amounts of food brought onboard and how they prepare so much for so many people in so little time - amazing. I remember learning, too, that when building the ship they intentionally made Lumiere’s kitchen big enough to support all three restaurants if need be, say because of fire or something.

The ship was a little rocky but not to the extent that any of us felt sick. The kids chose the Goofy pool for swimming b/c they wanted to watch High School Musical on the Dumbotron a-gain. By the time the trip was over I could recite that movie line by line. Once more, we scored great front row pool loungers. I mean, what are the chances of that happening every time we went up on deck?!

Just before dinner was Celebrate the Journey, Disney Sea University graduation. It’s a cute little production and worth having your kids participate in. The younger ones start practice at 4 and the parents show up at the Disney theater at 5, in time to see the kids walk down the aisles and onto the stage. They have a little slideshow presentation of the week in pictures. Minnie and Mickey come. Everybody sings the D-Sea-U alma matter. The kids get free t-shirts and a very nice graduation cap with Mickey ears. Nothing like free Disney paraphernalia!

**DINNER REVIEW** Semi-formal night dinner, we all had mushroom soup which was okay. I had the grilled shrimp and it was excellent (I ate TMW’s after I ate mine), nicely spicy the way shrimp should be. My favorite appy, I think. All the adults had the obvious choice, lobster tails, very good. Two DDs finally got brave and tried something from the adult menu. One got fettuccine w/parm chicken and the other got risotto w/asparagus and blue cheese. I tasted both and they were yummy!

Every darn night I’d wanted to snap photos of the meal presentations and kept forgetting to bring my camera. When the desserts started coming I had to make a mad dash to our cabin to get the camera b/c I wanted be able to salivate in memory of...

Hot lava cake, all ooey and gooey. Divine!

Cheese pudding (like a light cheesecake) with lingonberry sauce. DH thought it sounded gross, but it was my second favorite dessert after the creme brulee:

Meanwhile, DD8 couldn’t not be swayed from her dessert staple, a Mickey bar!

After dinner we went back to the room to change and found a surprise. It was a nice note from polite front desk girl, apologizing for our stateroom beep problem and the fact that they weren't able to resolve it for us. She’d also sent a fruit and cheese tray (around which Ana had arranged DDs' dolls picnic style with forks in hand) and two $10 cards to be used at Quartermasters. It was a nice thought and I was touched, especially because I suspected polite front desk girl thought we were either flat out crazy people or making things up in an attempt to get a free upgrade or discount, neither being the case.

After using up the Quartermasters cards (which doesn't take long with four kids), our whole gang went back to Promenade to play Disney Tune Trivia. DD11 really enjoyed it and got almost every answer right. DD6, DD8, TM7 enjoyed having the whole right side of the lounge to themselves to play with their dolls. When they tired of that they wanted to go clubbing, so us adults went clubbing too. Gary DeLena, the ship comedian, was performing in Rockin’ Bar D but it was packed full so we headed to Diversions to catch his act on closed circuit TV. He’s a pretty funny guy. Once the show was over the bar more or less cleared out except for our group and some crazy folks from NYC. It was pretty obvious the New Yorkers had been there for awhile, indulging in the bartender’s heavily loaded mixed drinks. If you like ‘em strong, Diversions is definitely the place to be. As if the two shots of Bacardi in each mojito aren’t enough, this guy floats an additional half shot of dark rum on the top - yowza!!

Anyhow, as I was saying, these New Yorkers were hilarious! Telling stories about their experiences with the CM club staff (apparently, their kid was unruly enough to actually be asked to leave the club!), which led to other observations, which led to a story about one of the husbands breaking his tailbone one drunken night when he had the bright idea to ride down a staircase on a drink tray, which led to one of the wives coyly asking the bartender for a drink tray and some Pam spray. All the NY women disappeared for about 20 minutes and came back in hysterics, showing off digital photos of what they’d just done -- ride the drink tray down aft staircase. Apparently, even some passers by joined in the fun and took tray rides. I was too afraid I’d break my tailbone so I refrained, but they sure were an entertaining crowd!

Then in came Christian, the cruise director. Now, I forgot to mention this before, but on Day 1 I was crushed to learn that Brent wasn’t going to be our CD. I think most of you women out there who’ve seen Brent understand why that is. He’s quite a handsome man -- a wittier and Aussier version of Anderson Cooper, maybe. I was skeptical that I would like Christian as much as I liked Brent, but I was way wrong! He’s just as funny (great at poking fun of himself) and every bit as friendly, if not more so. At the bar he started off by challenging that he’d buy a drink for whomever could correctly guess his age. Poor Christian is only 30 but we all guessed higher than that (sorry, dude, it’s the shiny bald head that threw us off, I swear!) so nobody got the free drink. Christian stayed and chilled with us awhile, obviously as entertained by the New Yorkers as we were.

This was our second encounter with Christian. The first was the night of the Golden Mickeys. I was standing in the hallway between the two gift shops with the girls, who were using the space to try to replicate the moves of the dancers they’d just seen in the show. Christian stopped and clapped for them and struck up a conversation about how, if they kept practicing, they could grow up to be dancers on the ship some day (um-hm, now you see where their bright idea came from). He then told us that’s how he started on the ship 6 years earlier. He was a dancer for awhile, then was promoted to theater manager or something like that, then to assistant cruise director, and now actual cruise director. I though that was pretty interesting and quite a lot of ground to cover in only six years! He certainly does have the personality to do what he’s doing.

It wasn’t too terribly late when the kids paged us for pickup. When I went up to Deck 9 to fetch the kids soda I was happy to see that sick ship restrictions were off and I could get my own. The lines at the drink station had been pretty long when it was ship service. Again, I felt like they needed to put more help there in order to speed things along.

What a good time to have the restriction lifted b/c it was dessert buffet night, a gorgeous display! Everything I sampled was tasty, although I wouldn't say the desserts were quite the caliber of those we'd had at dinner. We were allowed to serve ourselves the sweet concoctions of our choice. Well, except that we weren't allowed to dip our own fruits under the chocolate fountains. Oh, the chocolate fountains!! Bananas and strawberries and marshmallows and then some to dip. I'm getting hungry just remember!

One little section of the midnight buffet (just behind Pluto you can see the cream puff tree, subject of the story below):

Ya think DD6 enjoyed the buffet? She was more interested in eating the swirlies that decorated the pies than the pies themselves:

**HOT TIP** Do not attempt to eat the pretty things placed on the eleveated center strip of the dessert buffet table. Most of them are only for show! I learned this the hard way... As if there were no other choices available to me, I was really eyeing up this cream puff tree which looked like it had caramel drizzled all over it. It was awfully purty and no one else seemed to be utilizing it’s goodness, so I asked the waiter standing next to it (Haribe) if the puffs were edible or just for display. He smiled and handed me tongs and said, “As you please, ma’am.” So I take the tongs and try to pluck off a cream puff and it’s quite secure on there. So I tug harder, and harder still, until I look over and see that the Haribe is cracking up. It was NOT an edible cream puff tree and he was having a good laugh at my expense -- all good naturedly, of course. Stinker! Then I started to laugh with him and scolded that it’s not very nice to play pranks on unwitting cruisers!

Funnier still, the next day at Castaway Cay I went to get drinks from the station and as I gave the waiter my order he snickered and said, “You remember me? You had some buffet last night, yes?” Sure as heck, it was Haribe! We both started cracking up again! As I walked away I heard him filling his coworker in about what a maroon I'd been, trying to pluck petrified cream puffs off the display.

Tomorrow, the spectacular private isle that is Castaway Cay.

Thats hillarious!!! My hubby and ds hit the midnight buffet a few times. I never knew there was one until they told me about it! At the airport on the way home. Next cruise I am getting a wake up call so I can check it out! I will stay away from the cream puff tree!

Hi, just a quick question: I noticed in your earlier installment that you said that Formal night had been moved to Monday.....was there a particular reason for that, or is it always on Monday nights now on the Eastern itinerary? Great trip report, by the way. Very helpful tips for our upcoming cruise. Thanks!princess:

No, Thank goodness we personally did not know anyone who got sick. Our server said it normally happens after they have been in port for a day and people have been off the ship. I agree that even though we had to wait to be served brunch was great.

Also, next time you may want to have the girls hair braided at CC. My DD 8 also got the headband style braids and they are still in and look great! People are amazed when she tell them they have been in for two weeks. She ended up with twenty braids at two bucks a braid. It took about 20-25 minutes. I think part of the reason they have lasted so nicely is that she took small sections of hair for each braid. This was her fourth year in a row having it braided at CC and we have always had good results.

I'd also like to know about formal night. I made our Palo dinner reservations on Monday night because I thought formal night was Sunday. We cruise in three weeks, and now I'm in a panic! I will have to skip Palo dinner if formal night is now on Monday! In my family, getting everyone dressed up all fancy is a rare occasion. I'm looking forward to it.:goodvibes
