02-03-07 Heavenly Eastern Trip Report, family of 5

Welovedcl- I would so buy a copy also. My kids especially Sarah would love to have that. I really wish I had bought one. I ran back to the ship, didn't want to get left behind! Which actually might be ok!
Any way if I can buy one let me please and thank you!

- Order the kids Shirley Temples at dinner. They’re free and they look pretty and you won’t feel as pressured to buy the $3.99 smoothies. Plus, their cherry digging excursion will keep them occupied at the table for awhile!

- Liquor is just as cheap on this ship as it is on the islands, and sometimes even cheaper! Especially the daily specials. For example 2 Crown Royal for $26, 2 Absolut for $16, 2 Parrot Bay/Tangeray Gin $20, 2 Jack Daniels/Baileys $28

- Utilize the 2pm show if you can. It really freed up our evenings for character appearances and scheduled kid club events.

- Take towels from your bathroom or get some from Deck 9 prior to leaving for port islands. I don’t know if it’s cuz we got off the ship later in the morning (10ish), but there were never any towels provided at the gangway like there was on our last cruise. Wound up having to buy some in St. Maarten cuz we didn’t feel like the hassle of reboarding to get them.

- Cove Café was an area we didn’t utilize too much the first cruise but we sure did this time. It has the adults only pool, jacuzzi and bar outside, but there’s also a little indoor, glass-encased, escape-type nook area where there are bookshelves with paperback selections you can borrow if you forgot to bring reading materials, loungey sofas, a coffee bar, and a refrigerated dessert case with confections I didn’t see anywhere else on ship. I saw a few people hanging out in there, reading, getting away from the noisy/breezy deck areas.

- We found Promenade Lounge a good spot for “meeting up” in between activities or to hang out and escape Deck 9 when it was windy or cold. It’s often empty unless and it’s centrally located just off the Atrium. We’d flit from there to character appearances or to Shutters or the gift shop easily, and there’s also a bar, big comfy chairs, and large porthole views of wherever you are. Plus, our girls really enjoyed using the vacant dance floor as their own personal impromptu stage without being in anybody’s way.

- I wish I’d taken the time to go to the front desk and ask what the real deal is about the suggestion cards. I’ve seen this issue debated on these boards and I still have no definitive answer. We did get a brief excellence speech from Gabor about how anything less than “excellent” being checked in the food and service section would directly reflect on him and effect his status in some way. I really wanted to check “good” or “very good” in regard to the food since I thought there was room for improvement, but I was too afraid to do it b/c I didn’t want Gabor to suffer any consequences. By the time the suggestion cards were issued the line at the front desk was SO long I didn’t have time to wait, but I still want to know if checking less than excellent would have reflected poorly on the servers. I feel like I did myself and my potential future cruising a disservice b/c I wasn’t completely honest.

- That first day when we went to Rockin’ Bar D to check our dining ressie we heard people requesting to dine in Lumiere’s every single night instead of rotating to the other restaurants. Their wish was granted without hesitation. At first I thought, “Wow, what a great idea!” But then I figured the very likely drawback is that the servers rotate and you would probably have different ones every night. I enjoyed the bonding and familiarity with our servers and feel it’s a very special part of the overall experience, so I’d probably never opt to do this. But if you have a strong preference for a particular restaurant it is possible to eat where you wish.

- On the same note, don’t hesitate to ask about switching your kids from their allotted club. I was extremely happy that it was so hassle-free to move DD8 down into her sister’s younger group. It made the world of difference as far as getting both of them to utilize the clubs and I was never even the smidgest big sorry I’d made that decision to switch her. The extra perk was that the club counselors told me if DD8 ever saw an 8-9 age group activity she wanted to participate in they’d just switch her wristband for that activity and let her do it.

- Keep an open mind!! There were a gazillionteen things I’d either read about pre-cruise or that I’d highlighted in my Navigator that I just never got around to doing (towel animals, onboard movies, fruit carving, etc). Obviously, the reason for my missing was that I was already having too much fun somewhere else. Come with the ability to shrug it off, the least expectations you have to get it all done, the more enjoyable your trip will be.

Hope you all enjoyed my tale and gathered at least a little information from it. And I hope, if you haven’t cruised yet, your trip turns out as fantastical as ours! Happy sailing to ya!!!

Thank you so much for this wonderful trip report! Even though my family situation is different from yours (two teen boys rather than younger girls), I gleaned a lot of useful information from your report. If you think of any more little "tidbits", please add them. It's all very helpful, especially to those of us who are yet awaiting their first foray into the world of Disney Cruising!!

Lisa-

I finally had a chance to sit down and read your entire trip report. It was theraputic as we are suffering from post-vacation syndrome. If you have a chance could you send the pic of Olivia and Alex once more? It doesn't come through and Alex would really like to print off a copy.

Thank You!

.

Great trip report..........My family was on the same cruise and we miss it so much already and can't wait to go back. Jayne

i have 2 copies of the cd burned... Sunny liston.. i can/will burn more..

if you want a copy.. please pm me your addy... no problem mon...burner worked like a charm..

your report was really fun, interesting, helpful to read. we have never cruised but I am just beginning to consider it.

one thing that I'm worried about is... you gained 9-12 lbs in one week! I do not think I could be OK about that. How did this come about? Did you say going in, I'm going to eat all I want and not worry about weight gain, or did it sort of happen without your really being aware? If you more or less decided you'd accept any extra pounds, then I'd still think about cruising and just be sure to stay active and not go crazy at the table. But if you gained this weight unintentionally, then you are scaring me off!

Solgent - K, I'll be honest here. I was a pig. Total gluttony!! I'm a skinny girl by nature and eat I guess the average amount each day as anybody else. Don't really watch my weight or what I eat at all. On the cruise, I didn't even give a thought at all to what would be healthy or unhealthy or fattening or unfattening. In the course of each day I probably ate AT LEAST double the amount what I usually do, and then I had lots of rolls with dinner and oftentimes two desserts. I'm sure drinking lots and lots of sunny, fruity mixed drinks didn't help much either. I think my overconsumption just hit my metabolism for a loop. I have, BTW, lost 5 lbs of it just by returning home and not continuing to eat like a pig.

I really wouldn't let it scare you off!! TMW at the table with us had just lost 25 lbs. doing Weight Watchers pre-cruise and was committed to sticking with 'healthful' choices. Every dinner menu had some type of fish and also a special menu section for light fare and sugarless desserts (although I didn't try any).

There's food everywhere! EVERYWHERE! And I sampled it all. If I'd had a will to try to want to be careful I'm sure I wouldn't have gained so much weight.

DCL - I'm sending you a PM!! Thank you So, so much!!

the cd's went out today.. manilla midsize.. with bubble wrap.. blue sharpie ink.. my pleasure..

In the silence of night at home, I kind of miss those beeps.....and the sound of the sea waves....and the gently rocking ship lulling me to sleep.....

Ok you just brought tears to my eyes!!!!!

We are setting sail on our first ever cruise and DCL to boot!!!! On April 28!!!!!

Any additional tips are greatly appreciated- especailly since we are first time cruisers and DINK'S....

Lisa, Thanks for your honesty on the weight gain. I will just have to try to enjoy carefully! I've been doing more research and I'm thinking of booking a
3-day after a 4 night WDW stay in summer 2008!

Lisa,

I loved your TR. I was so depressed about returning that I could not bear to read any of the TR's until now. Stephanie saw the screen while I was reading and said "hey, there's Olivia". As much sadness as there is on the way home, it was nice to meet up with you on the flight back.

On our previous cruises, we booked later flights and spent Saturday exploring FL. Our first cruise we stopped at KSC which DH and I loved (we both work in similar fields) but the kids were just OK with it. It was somewhat subdued, I think, because the shuttle had just exploded on re-entry about a week before we left for the cruise. They did point out on the tour bus the building where the shuttle remains were taken. The second cruise we spent the day at DTD. The kids complained the whole time that they were tired and wanted to go home. They had stayed up until 1:30 am on the last night of the cruise and were cranky. This time, I decided to just come on home without any tourist stops and the kids were disappointed. I was looking at spending Sat night at the Nick Hotel but the flight on Sunday was an extra $250 and the hotel was $300. Too much money for one night IMHO. So to the airport it was!

DCL - Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! We got our CD yesterday! My girls are thrilled and have listened to the Days of the Week song over and over. What a great way to take you back to the islands! Thank you so much for going through the trouble to burn it and send it to me!

Snow White!! You know, the funniest thing was the moment I got home and was discussing Olivia's cruise friendships with her when I/we realized that you had to be somebody from the pre-cruise posting boards. So I went and flipped back and read through some posts and sure enough, there you were talking about your girls that were the same age. Do you know I even posted to you directly, asking if you wanted to have our girls email in advance? Too funny that Stephanie and Olivia met anyhow.

Lisa,

I have been reading these boards for over a year, but have never joined or posted....HOWEVER, after reading your trip report, I had to join to tell you what a FANTASTIC job your did on your report! Thanks for taking the time to write it, I have gained some super tips for our 7 day Eastern Cruise in Jan 2008!!!! THANKS! And THANKS for inspiring me to join the BOARDS!!

Hi Lisa,

That was a fantastic trip report! I cried right along with you leaving the ship. :(

I have an idea! :cool1: Why don't you join us on the Thanksgiving 2008 Double Dip to Costa Maya!

We have LOTS of little girls (mine will be 8 & 10) and it is forming up to be a Fantastic GIG! :hippie:

Two stops at Castaway Cay... :rolleyes1

Shucks, you guys make me feel all fluffy inside! Thanks for saying such nice things! It makes the time and effort I put into the TR all worthwhile.

Believe me, I'm hoping to join somebody on some Disney Cruise some day. It's a matter of putting little ideas into DH's head. He had a fantastic time on both cruises but says it's time we move onto other vacations. :( Waaah! Secretly, though, I've been keeping myself abreast of all the future sail dates and going rates for such... keep your fingers crossed for me.

Oh, and I expect to see full TRs from ya'll upon your returns!! I'll be waiting and watching.

Phew!!! I cannot wait to find out what that beeping noise is!! Great story....love you detail and colorful descriptions!

Lisa, great TR....I copied your tips and put them into a word document that I've been collecting since I started lurking on these boards a few months back. I am certain be the time I sail Jan. 2008 (10 month dance:cool1: ) that I will have accumulated an entire book!!

have a great day....and convince DH to sial in Jan 2008!!! We would love to have you aboard.
