Why does DCL have us congregate inside the theater instead of outside by the lifeboats?

Were you there on the Titanic?
How was that for you?
Did some handsome young man in steerage actually find a way out to meet the girl travelling in first class, he was in love with and hold her whilst he died so she could survive?
How realistic was the hollywood movie people have watched? And as I said watched then ask how safe a ship is?

ITS A MOVIE. NOT A REALISTIC DEPICTION OF WHAT HAPPENED!

I was not referring to any movie. I was referring to the boat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Titanic

Ask any 5 sailors the name of something nautical..........and you will likely get 6 or more answers as to what is correct!:rolleyes1

Very true. There are many dialects of NauticalSpeak depending on which part of the country/world you come from, your training background and which segment of the industry you work in.

Funny story ... My first job out of school was working tug/barge in the Mid-Atlantic region and I was having a very difficult time trying to communicate on the phone with my Port Engineer regarding a broken piece of equipment. A frustrating 10 minutes later, all my efforts to name and/or describe the problem item went completely no where. I finally grabbed a deck hand, pointed to the item and said "whats that called"? I then repeated that into the phone to which the port engineer responded "oh yeah that. No problem, we'll send you a new one."

It would be tight for sure, BUT keep in mind those are not intended to continue the cruise but to get you to the nearest land or responding boat, which ideally will not take a huge amount of time.
Very true, but it still could be hours, possibly even days in the Pacific, if you were sailing to Hawaii. But, not complaining - just saying it wouldn't be comfortable, although it beats the alternative. :)

it would be many hours or days only if the ship foundered without getting any form of distress signal out. Which isn't that likely.

I'm not sure what part of my posts you are "missing" or "misinterpreting", but I said watched Titanic and will we be safe. So As I'm well aware it is just a movie based fairly loosely on what did actually happen, with lots of Hollywood embellishments to the truth for a more entertainment, no sorry that isn't the correct word, but to make it more appealing to movie goers say, it really has no validity to document the terrible tragedy that unfolded with he ships design, yep ship, not boat, and failures onboard.

So no, unless someone said I watched a 5 hour documentary about the Titanic last week (not the Hollywood version of events), and still does not grasp that ship design safety systems have changed beyond recognition in the past 100 years, I still stand by more comment.

One thing my wife and I thought about was maybe for cruisers who have been on x number of cruises need only show up to and get checked in at their muster location, then not have to stand around to listen to the same presentation again. While we do stand quietly and listen, most people really don't pay attention and probably make it difficult for others to pay attention with their antics. So maybe by pulling the been there done that crowd out of the mix it would make it better for others, and then again the people goofing off could be first timers. Saying all that there is probably zero chance the coast guard would let this idea fly.

On an airplane I only half listen to the talk, but since we are on southwest I do wait to see where they drop the humor in, so I guess it works;) I do always look for the emergency exits in case we need to use them.

Oh Wow!

So along with the Castaway Club membership, they could have a system similar to here on the DIS, so for your first cruise you would be "Earning Your Oar's", two to four cruises, you would be a "Mouseketeer", and five an upwards you would be a "DCL Veteran".

And nope, the coast guard would never let it fly, or float! ;)

What really needs to happen is those people that show silly antics and goof off, they get asked politely to stop. If they continue then they need to be asked to leave the group and assemble at an inside area. Lets call it a "naughty step."
Then they should be held there until after the safety instruction drill has finished and then be given the option to either go outside and be respectful and listen to the whole drill again from the safety officer, personally, no Disney friendliness, or be debarked from the ship. (With a 20 minute allowance to collect any belongings they have left anywhere) And any baggage left with the porters.... well, that will be deposited at the next port of call, and at your own expense to collect it. (put it in the really small print of the cruise contract along with all of the other stuff we can do if we have to)

How can the safety instructions of the drill be compared from class of ship to ship, or even location within a ship.
Or of you took 20 cruises on the magic and wonder, and then the dream? Or 10 cruises on the dream and then a cruise on the wonder?

The best thing for everyone is to suck it up, put your big boy or girl panties on, it's a PITA, it has to be done, but it will most likely save your life if you have to repeat it for real on your current cruise.

Was always curious what happened to people that don't show up or go to the wrong location;) Do they get booted off, or get a stern lecture. I also agree they should keep everyone in line;) with everyone being packed together so closely on deck it is really noticeable when people are goofing off.

Maybe they could use the real trouble makers to give a demonstration of the man overboard procedure lol

I have no idea. I have always paid attention during my drill on a ship. But I have to confess like you, that on a plane, having to travel for work, if it is a similar model of aircraft, I just note my nearest exit now. A different type of aircraft, I do pay attention though.
But for the ships, they could at least make them demonstrate donning a life jacket.
AND THEN lower a lifeboat to the deck, and make them go inside, with lifejacket on (that would be especially nice for them in the height of summer!), and basically told off in the most stern Disney way.

Some people need tough love!

From what Ive heard/seen theres a letter left in the cabin that basically says that your muster station is here, life jackets are here, horn blasts etc.

There are ships all over the place, and I believe that they are all required to assist if they see or hear a distress call. It's really unlikely to be that long.

Virgin America has a truly funny safety video, and now United does, too, at least on some of United's flights. I pay attention to both of them. Humor helps!

The Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) float free and are automatically activated when either being immersed in salt water or being turned right side up (they are hanging upside down). They will transmit the ID of the ship and its exact location. Everyone in the area would know literally within minutes of the first EPIRB going off and there is enough maritime traffic in the Caribbean that you really wouldn't likely spend more than a few hours in a lifeboat.

for Alaskan cruisers who act up make them demonstrate the donning of an immersion suit. That is one of the many traditional forms of new guy hazing on a merchant vessel.

When I said lol!, you were joking? Right?

Nope. At some point in the recent past, this topic has come up a few times. I can think of at least 1 or 2 legit reasons on why a family on or families would miss the muster drill. Usually because the flight was late or the transport they were using was late. As an example, on our last cruise on the Fantasy, after the muster drill and at 515 just before the last lines were dropped at PC, I personally saw at least 2 families running onto the pier, escorted by DCL terminal employees to board the ship. They were last minute transfers from the Magic, who had canceled 2 cruises due to her late drydock issues. My fil and I were talking trying to figure out why we were still in port after the Sailaway celebration. We found out later that cruise we had taken on quite a few transfers from the Magic and most of the passengers were coming from Miami.

Someone else about 1 or 2 years ago, posted a letter that was left for them, under similar conditions. It was basically a 1 page summary of the drill.

I would HOPE that the letter is only in that kind of case and NOT for people who just don't show up. Those who just don't show up and they are known to be on the ship should be escorted off IMHO.

Realistically, I cant think of anywhere onboard other then in the infirmary where someone could go to willfully miss the drill. I haven't put too much thought into is, so maybe someone else has. I mean all of the stores, rest, counter service, buffets are all closed. The only place you might be is gs if you had a cabin issue. Anywhere else on the ship, a cm should see you and point you in the right direction. The stewards check the rooms afaik, and all of the public spaces are covered.

Now with that said, if someone is endangering me or my family during an actual issue, Im going to stay as far from them as possible, where Im supposed to be.
