As you know we went to see the Neuro on the 24th Oct.
He put Becca on Topomax - A 25mg dose once and day for 15 days and then twice a day thereafter.
Well........Becca very quickly turned into a complete Zombie! Listless, fatigued and lacking any sort of concentration altogether......Needless to say, trying to teach her school has been a total pain in the ****.
Last Monday after long phone talks with the doctor (through his nurse/answering service) we had the 25mg dose cut in half and she was getting more and more zombified.
She was taking her meds at night before bed. Wednesday and Thursday last week she woke up (late) and had her breakfast and then promptly disappeared to the bathroom and threw up, Friday she didnt even manage breakfast!
Now we know our daughter and the only times she throws up is if she gets the sudden onset migraine or she is coming down with something and she basically throws up for a full day.
This was different.....for a start, she hadnt had enough energy or verve in her to even start working up a migraine
and once she threw up just that once she was fine
Anyways, to cut a long story short on Friday I again played telephone tag with the doctor/nurse/answering service and took her off the meds.
She has to go see the Neuro again tomorrow to discuss alternative meds.
I am afraid if he suggests something with the antihistamine properties in it we are going to veto it.
This exercise was meant to improve her quality of life but the meds just change her into a blob that didnt even have enough energy to work up any kind of headache. The migraines she suffers from are brought on by her doing too much and not having sufficient Oxygen to fuel what she is doing.

That's no fun! I think it was wise to stop them if she was reacting like that. A lot of kids get all zombie like from antihistamines. I hope they're able to find something that will work for her.
