News Round Up 2016

Lol...you're looking within DAYS? Not really weeks?

Come on, Dave...that's some Florida nonsense from 2002 youre using there...nobody goes last minute.

And yes...the DVC rooms usually fill up eventually. I was more looking down the road. Advanced bookings are the stats Disney used to gauge longterm interest.

The best you could do in march is 2 consecutive nights, unless you want to stay at SSRor OKW.....

All you have to do is keep scrolling until you see the picture of Ryan and Mickey... then, stop.

If you see the Viking photo, keep going......

Hey Rteetz-- are you related to a Ted?

He participates in discussions just as much as anyone else, which is probably where some of the others' frustration comes from. Again while I enjoy the discussions as well it doesn't mean others don't have a problem weeding through the pages. Just because I like peanut butter doesn't mean my friend who doesn't is wrong, see where I'm going with this?

There is always going to be discussion about topics I just don't like where things get really off topic.

April has some decent availability at OKW,SSR and AKV, so I guess that is a bit.. the others are single nights mostly. IDK..

There was good availability for DVC as of about a month ago for late March and beyond...there still most available in July (I've been trolling plans).

DVC will usually books up due to sheer volume of contracts...that's part of the genius of it. But these places are far from "slammed" in the planning phases. Two years ago it seemed like they were...that could be perception...

But when they unveiled "last minute magic" as part of DVC 25...there was your clue.

Not quite the same with rack rooms. I just did a quick scan for this Friday - a holidays weekend - and there were rooms available at 7 Disney hotels.

AoA suites (you gotta be crazy)
Two moderates
4 deluxes

That "ain't good"

So when people say "the parks are so crowded!!!!" The empiracle data doesn't quite bare it out.

And the questions of "when are they gonna build the marvel resort!?!?!?"

Umm...why?

Same with the earnings calls...I would love to see where all the numbers are coming from. It seems we are in an era of captain jack sparrow "go with rum" spending at disney parks...

I like what I see, but I'm a little nervous for the future of ESPN...

To the analyst talking about splitting the company apart, I was saying that before it was cool!
Who the heck said I was saying they should spin off media networks?

Actually I've liked that idea for a while... I expect ESPN to be squeezed by higher costs, and Disney's portfolio of channels to sell to cable companies for lower subscription costs as that industry is disrupted. I believe Media Networks is the most vulnerable division in the company, and the most likely to lead to billions in lost value. I'd argue spinning it off due to these risks and lack of synergies. An IPO for ESPN, and a rebranded ABC News would do the trick. Either offer shares in the new company or straight up return cash to the shareholders.

I think ABC and Disney Channel should survive. They represent the most synergy with their other brands. The new Walt Disney Company would consist of their core strength in IP Managment and unique experiences. Also of note, because Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is a highly stable business it would offer security when making investments in movies. De Capital Cities themselves.

Before you mock too much just remember one thing...

Never bet against Apple.

That was back in May. The performance of SW proves this even more. My point back then was how strong the synergy was between Lucasfilm and most of the company, except for Media Networks. Consumer Products and Studio Entertainment having incredible performance this quarter, and Disney Parks is preparing to benefit from SW in the coming years, bears that view out.

How's ESPN going to benefit?

Splitting the company is becoming a reasonable proposition. Try telling that to the Disney of yesterday that was contemplating selling Parks and Resorts, and they would laugh you out of the room. Now Disney Parks is becoming the third pillar of three parts of franchise domination.

As for the Executives talking about expanding room capacity...

That does not surprise me ;)

With 92% occupancy and a 10% increase in attendance, they can only be doing the simple math and realize that WDW and Disneyland have never been stronger. They should be expanding capacity. That's obvious.

I agree. I'm most interested to see if they do anything with hotels at Disneyland.

You two are ignoring the ship on the horizon...

No economic "boom"
Last forever...they just don't. The cracks are there and growing.

As far as ESPN goes...I think the writing is on the wall. If they sign the new NBA contract - they're fools.

And if they thought they could sell ESPN standalone...you be damn sure they would be moving to do it already.

ESPN is like Kodak...quick death in a changing technology world. My prediction.

Indeed, I've been eagerly watching that too! Unlike the WDW that probably won't be Deluxe, Disneyland will probably be a 4 Star or 4 Diamond. That's Disney Hotels at their finest! We haven't seen a new Domestic Deluxe Disney Hotel since 2001. I'd be fascinated to see what they'd bring to the table. A more highly themed hotel like Grand Californian, or a more lightly themed one like Disneyland Hotel.

It's also just cool to see how they manage property there too...

Update: In order to avoid further thread drift, I'll just add a little here @lockedoutlogic.

Your original thesis against hotels was Disney doesn't want to hire labor. Then it morphed into the idea of not seeing the returns necessary/the Disney that built hotels is gone. Now that the Disney of today has just stated their interest in hotel building, you say they couldn't do it even if they wanted to. Why? Because recession is inbound.

I think this is going to go down like SW Land and DHS work. It won't be an accepted idea up until it's announced. That's fine. I just think WDW will have meaningful hotel capacity additions. Universal is adding. Sea World is adding. Marriott is adding. Hilton is adding.

Consider this...

Out of the total hotel inventory of 25,400 rooms, 2,400 hotel rooms are Disneyland Resort rooms. Those other 23,000 WDW hotel rooms are the majority of Disney's inventory. Then consider 92% Occupancy. Those Disneyland hotel rooms may be carrying weight. I'm sure they are. But those numbers aren't all Disneyland's. Walt Disney World is performing the best they have in years.

Disneyland will almost certainly add rooms. I'm also certain there's room for Walt Disney World too.

Thanks...that's a great link.

I definitely see the need for Disney to alter the hotel structure in Anaheim.

Where I typically differ is that I see no urgency to do so in wdw other than more timeshares...and you better believe those are going to be rolling down the pipeline as this MGM train gets rolling.

I know no economic boom lasts forever but I think they are going to do sow thing with the resorts I just don't know what that is yet. Whether it's in WDW or Disneyland.

I also think yes ESPN has problems and will continue to do so but I don't think they are Kodak.
