September 2015 Car Rental Watch

Beginning 9/3 for 11 days; Alamo compact with Costco discounts with free additional driver, 66.84 base rate (weekly) plus 3 days at 28.65 base rate equals...$118.23 Total including all fees.

Budget also has $35 off a weekly rental with coupon code MUGZ165. This code is great because it doesn't require a Saturday night stay like most weekly coupons.

First, to use the Dollar-Rent-A-Car XX percent off mentioned on the past page or so, you do NOT have to be a member of any special Dollar Club. But, it is a pre-pay rate and frankly, I am seeing better rates out there.

The Budget coupon, mentioned above, while still putting my full-size five-day rental some $20 higher than I have currently with Hertz (including a free additional driver with Hertz), is not a bad deal, at least for my dates....Might want to check it out.

BTW, I used some BCD codes I have, along with the $35 MUGXXX coupon and, when I checked the rental without the BCD codes, but with the MUG coupon, the rental was much cheaper without the BCD's. The BCD's I use are usually pretty good, so, if you do have a BCD, check it both ways.

Still surprised at the rate I got from Hertz earlier this summer. Right now, Hertz is fairly $$$, but I got a really good rate early-on with the disboard code and nobody has beaten it yet. Ya' never know...

I feel left out, seems everyone is a Costco member but me.

There are a lot of us and Costco seems to have some of the better discounts. But don't give up -- there are other sources: AAA (Dollar especially seems to have good AAA discounts sometimes), BJ's, Disney passholders, WalMart, airline affiliations that you can join for free, credit cards (often Visa), RentalCarMomma, CarRentalSavers and the list goes on. Take a look in MouseSavers and drill into the car rental pages and you'll see some of them.

Beginning 9/10 for 13 days; Alamo standard with annual passholder discount and $30 coupon AD2338FDF ...

Beginning 9/24 for 6 days (weekly rate); Alamo standard with Costco discounts & code ad2338fdf $70.70 base/$77.90 total.

You're all getting great rates! For those of you using AD2338FDF at Alamo, remember that one is a Visa code, so you will need to do your rental with a Visa card. (I happen to use Amex because of an insurance thing I signed up for, so I can't use the Visa code)

I have been checking Alamo with both BJs and Costco codes and they have been the same. We have a BJs membership already but are considering getting one with Costco but so far no benefit.

Before we joined Costco, I used the Visa contract id and was able to get some good rates. Sometimes, it still gives the best rate.

The Dollar web site was not behaving when I tried to check the 25% off deal. It was probably random luck that it worked when I put in my Express id. But, I agree, the rate isn't great. It wasn't better for me and it's a pre-pay and I like to avoid those.

I felt the same way...then I did the math & realized Costco saved me more than the annual fee, so I joined last Saturday simply for the Alamo discount! LOL Thankfully there is a Costco near my house so I will be able to use it for more than car rentals. :)

And another nice benefit of using Costco code to book is the extra driver for free. It can save you a bunch of $$$ if you want to share the driving with someone else in your party (doesn't necessarily have to be your spouse either)

I checked to try to do just that but membership is $55, 2nd driver is costing us $60. Changing from my AP code to the Costco code made my rental go up $15. So it would actually cost me more to use the Costco code.

Sept 17-23, Alamo, $112 for Standard car, using Visa code AD2338FDF and AP code 860292. Then add $60 on for extra driver.

For those that can't use the $30 Visa coupon, there's a $25 coupon from Entertainment Book that works for specialty rentals (SUVs, Minivans or convertible) on Alamo. You can get a 1-month Entertainment membership for $0.99 online.

I used it just now and got a midsize SUV weekly rate from Alamo picking up 9/19: $128 after taxes. Used costco ID and Entertainment book coupon.

I am getting $90.14 estimated now! How close to the "estimated price" are you actually charged? And how fast will I get the Costco card in the mail? Do I have to have it in hand to use code? Or will I get some print out from Costco when I purchase the membership? I don't have a Costco anywhere near me, but DD25 has one by her house and the car will actually be in her name with my DH as the 2nd driver (we don't have a Visa).

Estimated price has always been the final price we have paid. We always use the online check-in so never been persuaded to add any extras at the counter to increase the "estimated" price.

If you use the Costco code during your reservation, you will be required to enter your Costco number on the final page of the reservation (just below flight info) before hitting the "Book It" button. If your DD goes and gets the card, she can give you the membership number to make the reservation.

If you/she purchases the membership in a Costco store, the card is issued immediately. If you order it online, you will receive your Costco ID in the email confirmation of the order but you are required to visit one of the stores to get the actual card issued (go to the Member Services counter, it's usually the really short line right next to the crazy long return/exchange line). Cards are issued in the stores because they will take a picture of you and it will be printed on the back of the card (a fraud prevention measure)

And final answer: if you don't have a Visa card to pay for the reservation, then you can't use the Visa $30 off code. If you join United airline's frequent flyer program (Free to join) you can use their $30 off code which is AD2492ACX

FYI: I always find it more convenient to book my reservation on the actual rental car's website (ie: alamo.com, budget.com etc) rather than through a booking engine (priceline, expedia, etc) or travel agent or site (ie: costcotravel.com etc).
I will quite often use search or booking engines to get an idea of best prices (carrentals.com, carrentalsavers.com etc) but I will use the info I find there and book directly on the car rental website. I don't have any issues with changing or cancelling reservations this way.

One more thing, never book a pre-paid rate unless:
A) it only a day or 2 before you are leaving and it's a great rate or:
B) it's an AMAZING rate, your plans are set in stone, no major catastrophes looming (hurricane etc.).
Pre-paids have a change or cancellation fee so any last minute changes in your plans can negate any savings from the pre-paid rate. Also you will usually (but not always) find that a pre-paid rate has to be changed by calling and speaking to a CSR,

Bottom line with pre-paids is to check what the change/cancellation charges are before booking. My feeling is that if the cancellation fee is about the same as the amount you are saving (by pre-paying) then it's not worth it.
On the other hand, pre-pay can be a way of managing you vacation expenses since you will already have been billed (and presumably paid for the rental) before you leave and you won't be returning home to this bill along with all the other incidentals that you put on the CC.

I totally agree with nacho113's post right above.

Only thing I'd add is I doubt you will need to show the Costco card, since you enter it during the reservation....at least at Alamo. If you're using another agency, I'd at least be prepared to show it.

On the United code, which is an old one, but seems to work fine: You don't need to fly United for this trip (I'll be on US Airways myself), but I'll bring my United MileagePlus card along in case they ask...which they probably won't.

Okay I made the reservation with my DD25's fiancé's Costco membership number. I can't buy the membership online until tomorrow (payday) as my mortgage check hasn't gone thru yet and don't want to bounce THAT check, lol. I'm assuming we will be fine using his number on the reservation as long as we have a valid card with our name on it when we pick up the car? Or will I need to modify the reservation when I get my actual card number??
