4th grade graduation?

We have Grad too but not a party put on by the family. You don't throw a party if someone gets fired or files bankruptcy..those are new chapters too. A chapter 11 in one case LOL
here in the states people rent tents and some even have a dj and catered food, my parents did a big bbq for my high school and college graduation. you know it's grad weekend here when you see the tents and cars line up and down the street in front of peoples houses

Why in the world is there a 4th grade graduation?

My kids were in a school system before our last move that had lower and upper elementary school - moving to 4, 5, 6 was "upper" elementary school. K-3 was lower.

Just take the kid out for ice cream. Why is everything a huge deal these days?

That sounds fun, just very different..

elementary school here is k-4th and then you move to middle school for 5th - 8th grade, I went to this same elementary school and it was k through 5th grade and we had moving up day at the end of 5th grade. I also teach first grade in this same school

my daughter will have 4th grade graduation in a few weeks she will start middle school in the fall should I do anything special for her, I remember my 5th grade graduation my mom took me to ground round for lunch and then out for ice cream. what should I do for her my youngest also has preschool graduation that week. help

Something as simple as going to the Ground Round for lunch and then out for ice cream is such a long lasting memory for you. I think you should do the same for both of your kids :) Something simple and yet so special that your kids (and yourself) will enjoy! Enjoy the moment because they go by way too quickly.

thank you my husband and I are thinking about taking all three kids out for lunch as an end of the year treat, in September I will have a 5th grader and second grader and my baby will be in k, it does go fast

So let's see there is pre school graduation, kindergarten graduation, 4th grade graduation, 8th grade graduation and h.s.

Lol, and all of these are "special" ?? You have to do something every three years?? Do they have ceremonies with caps and gowns???

I did nothing for my DD last year (she started middle school in the 5th grade too).
I think all these graduations are silly - they are just moving to a different school
I know that may seem cold to some people, but I save the celebrations for the really BIG accomplishments.

*After reading this....it sounded really crabby (which I have been lately - long story)
We make a HUGE deal out of certain accomplishments like their religious sacraments, DD making the HS soccer team, DD hitting a grand slam and other personal triumphs they've had.
Going from 4th grade to 5th grade is normal progression of going through school (you have to do it, you have no choice) - I think 8th grade graduation is silly too, but I didn't tell my DD that. High School graduation is a big deal - you made it!! College graduation is a big deal - you made it!!

I know probably EVERYONE is going to disagree with me on this - LOL!!!
Not me. its called the dumification of America. We now celebrate everything no matter how mediocre.

we don't have kindergarten graduation here, only preschool, 4th, 8th and high school and college. did you not have a moving up event when you left elementary school or middle school, I did

My apologies also. just seems like Ive gotten more invitations mundane events. case in point, my cousin by marriage is having a party (gifts excepted) because her 22year old son got his first apartment!! Seriously, that is now an "achievement "??

We called it promotion. lol it was pretty much expected. At the end of every year you got promoted to the next grade. 8th grade and H.S. were it and no one had a celebration until H.S.

We expected our kids to go to the next grade, that wasn't the exception. it wasn't cause for a party, it wasn't cause for a end of year celebration.

Do you get parties at work every time you complete a project or finish a year on the job?? serious question.

I just question this new constant need to make every thing a "major" accomplishment.

That's all. what made 4th grade a big accomplishment that won't happen during 5th, 6th and 7th

I do apologize, I don't understand it but I don't have the right to say it's wrong

I am not giving her a party, the school puts on the moving up event did your kids not have them because every school around here has them, this is a big deal for some kids as they may not be together next year as some kids will go to catholic school for middle and high school. the school pta buys a big cake from sams and they have punch it's nothing big and the kids sing a few songs and show off their art work from the last five years of elementary school, they do the same type of event in middle school.

why are people here so rude, I was looking for ideas you people need to chill

I apologize for being the person that started the discussion on not celebrating a 4th grade graduation. You asked for ideas and I sorta derailed that. I hope you do whatever is best for your family, because it doesn't matter what any of us say, what matters is what makes your family happy.

I won't speak for Eliza but I'm not saying I have an issue with a celebration put on by the school. That's fine and that can't be changed. I take issue with having to have a party or go out for dinner or give a present for doing something like passing a grade. That's something, to me, that is expected of my daughter. She gets praise for a good report card, not a party with all our relatives.

If you want to reward your kids by going out for dinner, do that. I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't. Just that it's not what I do and I don't understand it. I mean no insult to you, honestly.

so you will do nothing for her high school graduation
