I can't hear a difference at all, but I took one of those regional accent tests and most of my answers were "I pronounce them the same". An exception: Hock and Hawk. I'm going to use that as my guide for the difference between Don and Dawn.

Yup, I pronounce them the same too. Even Hawk/hock. No difference. I believe that is what is called a "midwest/west" accent - I have heard people from other places say this about the way we speak here - we pronounce our vowels "flat".

"Hawk" is "hock". "Don" is "Dawn". No difference at all, to me.

I just took this accent quiz, and I scored 95% The West/Midland.
"Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta."

Yes, that's a bit of an exaggeration. But you will never mistake where I'm from.

I took the accent test and got:

"North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.

I agree and I can not stand the way Jeff says Dawns name- he says it like the mans name Don instead of Dawn!

I took the test and I scored "West" meaning that I basically have no accent. But that is not quite right. Even people here say that I have a "country" accent and my cousins from back East (Maryland, West Virginia) think I definitely have one and always make fun of my "accent".

Chat with any of the locals in my small NC town and you'll see how. The accent is THICK down here.

I'm from Long Island. Moved here 10 years ago. I have no accent. Seriously. Even though both of my parents sound like Andrew Dice Clay. Everyone says that I have no discernible accent. Check out my tags.

The American accent test has me pegged! From birth through college I live in the Chicago area or Northern Wisconsin.

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

I took the accent test but some of the answers didn't apply. For me Mary and marry are the same and merry is different. That wasn't an answer option though. It had me at North central. Far from it. Anyone who talks for me pegs me with a Boston accent right away.
