I feel so sorry for our sweet northern princesses. You ladies are just going to melt!

I purposefully did my last long taper run yesterday afternoon. The high in Dallas yesterday was 65 degrees (the same low we are supposed to have when the race begins). Y.U.C.K.!!!!!!

I'll hang out in the A/C with flatlandcycle!;)

I've been training indoors so that at least temp wise, I'm accustomed to running it temps 65-70ish. The humidity however.... :scared1:

I'm nervous about that humidity! Morning temperature was similar at the Disneyland Half and it was fine... but southern California is not humid. Apart from the race, though, I'm looking forward to some pool time with those high temps. It will be good to have a break from the wind and snow.

Ladies I need a weather dance. They are calling for a snow storm on Thursday night when I need to fly out to Orlando. I got into the Meet Up!!!

The airline will not move my flight (yet) as they are not calling this a weather event (yet)

The same thing happened last year, they canceled my flight and I took me 8 hours to find a new way to Orlando

Oh god don't remind me of last years Disneyland Half. This weekends princess will be my 12th half and that race is still the only one I look back and inwardly cringe at. I can handle heat normally but 89 by race finish plus my arches were killing me? Yeah not fun! I had two separate breakdowns during that race (miles 6 and 8 ) the first time since my first half I had hit the wall. If the race hasn't been on my birthday I may have pulled out because of the heat.

If I see any signs of the weather flags going up again (by the time I got to about mile 10 or 11 it was hot enough to put up the middle flag, red (no it wasnt the pace flags the balloons were behind me) that's how bad it got ) I honestly don't know how I'll react.

Also I would like to kindly disagree on the humid statement. While it wasn't southern humid that sure wasn't your average CA dry heat. We can blame that lovely tropical system that was moving to the south of us that weekend for that.

I am so excited!!!!

Yep. I was up around 4:30 but wasnt signed in for work until 5. When I got on FB and saw the news, I sent immediately! But it was 5:05CST so I lucked out!

having run the full this past january in that crazy heat, the only advice (since you all asked, ha) i have is to drink a good amount the day before and day of. stop at every water/powerade stop.bring your own water belt as well. i stopped at just about every stop in january to have a cup of water and a cup of powerade. and i finished my own water supply AND had my two bottles refilled twice. drink drink drink! that's what i did and i actually felt great for the rest of day.

i'm sure someone here will chime in and talk about the dangers of overhydrating. clearly i'm not talking about that. i'm just saying stay hydrated, especially if it's super hot :)

After hearing the times you all got up to get in to the meet up I'm actually glad I decided to pass on trying to do the meet up. I all ready was up early on Saturday doing one crazy registration (San Diego Comic Con, that was a mad house) didn't feel like doing it a second time.

Plus I got to meet Mr. Galloway at Tinkerbell. A word of advice for the expo, if he isn't lecturing try swinging by the Run Disney booth because he maybe there. I got to get a picture with him at the Tink expo (plus I used the chance to sign up for a raffle for the trip to the Athens marathon they were offering).

Funnily enough I would actually end up about five feet away from him while waiting to enter the corrals on race morning. He was just standing around there waiting for the crowd to start moving. Didn't approach him but I was close enough to see and her him talking with another guy runner (giving some advice if I remember correctly) very clearly (when I said five feet I really do mean it was about five feet).

Last years DL 1/2 was not as bad as the DL 1/2 2007 when they did red flag it at the start of the race. That was my first 1/2 so I had no clue how serious the conditions were.

Yeah I heard about the 07 race (thanking whatever lord I wasn't into running then). And I think a person perception of bad depends on a person.

I think if you were off the course by 9:30 to 10 ish you were okay but if you were in the towards the back corrals (started in E which began around 6 maybe 6:15 ish) than you got caught in the heat. Or at least I did. The Disneyland Half would be one race I would whole heartedly approve of moving to an extremely early start time. Because I know I saw those darn red flags by the time I hit the aid station directly after the Angels Stadium run.

Admittedly though the melt downs were hugely influenced by my arches. I was at about a 9 or 10 on a pain scale of 10 when I had the first break down at that spot. I wanted to sit down and cry more than once. I actually did do that once. The only thing that kept me going was a) I had started the race with a friend (we had split ways at a bathroom stop) and if it was her first half and god darn it I wasn't going to not finish this race if I had anything to do that and b) it was my birthday, I just couldn't up and quit on my birthday.

Also concerning the arches, I had arch support, they changed their formula on the ones I used to use. When they changed it, it went from working fantastically to not doing squat.

Here's my Merida "costume" - not much to it, but the wig is way too bouncy to run in. Had fun making the sleeves out of Target knee socks today with my daughter.:)

Eh yours is more accurate than mine is. I'm just hoping to get one character on course to see it for what it is.

A taper is is something like 6 miles on the weekend prior to the race, a run of 5-4 miles, 3-4 miles then 2 miles leading up to the race.

Reverse taper:
Post race have a short walk the day after, maybe a 2-3 miles running two days after, then a 4-5 miler then 6 on the weekend. Take an easy day for every mile of racing. So if you race 13.1 hard/or in extreme heat take at least 13 days before you hop back into intervals or racing.

You are likely to be in very good condition after the race. Two-three weeks post half is a good time to make a personal best in the 5k-10k. Do a good 10k and you have proof of time for the next adventure.

Thank you so much for letting me know. I am gaining a better idea as to what to do after the race and still stay fit for running.

Very Cute. The wig would have been waaayy to HOT.

AFM: I have been out doing some work and DH now wants an outfit to cheer in...thanks to Crispey's BF shirt! Should have never shown him that. I'm working on a Prince Mickey..kind of like the old Prince and Pauper Mickey cartoon.
