The What's for Dinner Thread- June 2012 (recipe index in OP)

Evening everyone! It's nearly 10 pm in Melbourne and we're all a twitter here over the 5.2 earthquake that hit us just over an hour ago. It seemed to go on forever...and my house just rocked and rolled for a good 20 seconds or more.

Yes, I know...5.2 would NOT even rate a mention in California but for this part of the world, that's quite a big number.

WFDT? Its Tuesday and DH's turn to cook. Baked potatoes. What a surprise!

Have a good day all.

I usually have the news on but not this morning. I am glad that you are okay! 5.2 is a huge one here on the East Coast too!

I doubt the quake will make news in the US. :rotfl:

Have a good day. I'm heading to bed soon. Wonder if the sky will fall down on me??? :lmao:

...Graduation #1 down - Graduation #2 to go....soooo, WFDT? I dunno, reservations mebbe? :confused3 [ :teeth: ]

Good morning,

It's going to be a HOT one here today.

The bread/taco salad sounds really good to me, I could enjoy that!

I need a nap! This weekend was crazy. Friday I took my van in for service, oil change and to check on brakes, 11 hours and almost a $1000 later and it still isn't finished. :headache:The front brakes were shot and needed new everything. The back drivers side brake is having an issue with the caliper so they disconnected the parking brake so I could get it back for the weekend.
 Sorry to hear about the van

Everything sounds so good! What are Zapps?

Zapp's are potato chips from a company in Louisiana, that can only be found in the south. Every time I make it somewhere down south for work I pack a box full of chips and bring them back on the plane. When I went to Alabama in May I came home with 30+ bags, David was overjoyed...

Jen has to have tried these, right??????

Hope you all are ok and everything (including the new camera) made it through without any scratches?

Good morning,

Brandi ~ Your meals for the week sound amazing. You do so good.

Nan ~ Wow, lady you are really doing great on the diet. So is Marisa!! I am proud of both of you for your willpower.

Merle ~ Dang - I hate care troubles. That is one thing I HATE paying for.

Kimmar ~ Congratulations on the graduations. I think reservations are super good.

PIO ~ I hadn't heard about the earthquake either. Please take care!! How scary. We have tornadoes here in Nebraska - no earthquakes. At least with a tornado there is some warning. Earthquakes not so much. :scared1:

Another scorcher here today. It reached over 100 yesterday and is supposed to again today. That is just to darn hot for me. I couldn't even get myself to Zumba last night. I was sweating just getting dinner ready I didn't need to go to the gym. Well that is my story and I'm stickin' to it.

WFDT ~ Tuna pasta salad, tomatoes and whole wheat crackers.

Make it a great day.

Wednesday night and all's normal in my part of the world. Dinner at mum's. There was a bit of superficial damage close to the epicentre but most of Melbourne were huddled around the hot water cooler today talking about where they were and what they were doing at the time of the quake.

No damage to me and none around the house that I could see. The new camera is fine! Thanks for asking Brandi. :thumbsup2

Hope you're all well. It's past the mid-week hump here and all downhill to the weekend.

Day 6 of our trip and it was Good Friday. That means Pesky Vegetarian food!

Our excursion during the day was to the Big Buddha, up on Ngong Ping, Lantau Island. Turns out it was a great move for Good Friday.

There was a Buddhist monastery up on Ngong Ping and they only served vegetarian food. We bought tickets to go inside the Buddha....and it came with 'snacks' that we collected from this cafe.

We got a plate of noodles each...

0406HKDay143.jpg

...two cold dim sum pieces (this is what DH and I chose for our four pieces)...

0406HKDay139.jpg

...and a cup of tea.

0406HKDay144.jpg

If this is what a 'snack' is, I'll definitely be collecting this anytime! I was to find out that the cost of this 'snack' would have been HK$25; which is about $3 in our money. The food was seriously good. Incredibly tasty and the dim sum pieces were among the best I have eaten anywhere!

The Big Buddha, Ngong Ping Village and the Monastery?

It was a cold and wet day heading up. The cable car has to traverse up the mountains and it does a couple of turns. It almost turns 360 degrees before it hits the top destination. That mountain in front of us is the first turn. It keeps climbing even higher than that...through the clouds.

The Village.

0406HKDay029.jpg

On the way to the Big Buddha, 5 - 10 minute walk away....

...before you have to head up 240 steps.

The view heading back down....and yet more rain.

And did I mention that we sat in a glass bottom cable car?

Ellen, we are in the midst of a heat wave here too. 98 degrees here and 90% humidity! I swear it is the humidity that gets me.

PIO - Glad you are all ok... Love the pictures from your trip but I just love the food, wish I was there enjoying it myself!

Good Morning,

PIO ~ Your pictures are amazaing. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I am throughly enjoying "our" trip. :goodvibes

Brandi ~ I always say it's not the heat that bothers me near as much as the humidity. I just wilt!!

SamerX ~ Welcome!!

Today is gray and cloudy. Not even suppose to get to 80 degrees today. Crazy, just crazy!!! The last three days we have been over 100 and they said that we have been in the 90's for the last 11 days. Then today people have jackets on. Weird!!! But it is so humid that you can just see it in the air. YUCK!!!

WFDT ~ Pork Chops with a peach salsa, lima beans and arugula feta salad.

Make it a great day!!

Ellen - Glad you're enjoying "our" trip. I know Brandi and Alison are following along the TR, so I've been keeping things to just the foodie posts. I really don't want to duplicate too many things but I know we all enjoy food porn.:goodvibes

Brandi - Knowing how much you enjoy travelling, I'm pretty sure that you'll make it out to China and/or Hong Kong to enjoy the food for yourselves.

SamerX - Welcome.

WFDT? Its wet and cold in Melbourne. I made a pot of vegetable soup this morning. All the vegetables were diced, which is lucky, as I have decided to keep it as is rather than blend it up together. But it seemed to lack something...so I've gotten some fish. I'll poach the fish in the soup as I'm heating it for dinner later and flake it into chunks. Might be a substantial enough meal with some crusty bread. :thumbsup2

It seem like you get hot and sticky and can't shake it! I always have to take a shower to cool off. So my Water Bill and Utility Bill always go up

Kim- Did you make reservations for your graduations?

Ellen- we are in teh middle of your heat wave :scared:

I was just dripping last night and stood under a cool shower. Why you ask??????? Because my central A/C never kicked on. It was crazy hot here! I tested it a few weeks ago to avoid this little issue and still......

Dinner last night was a big salad with some leftover steak for me and genoa salami sandwiches with a tomato, cucumber and onion salad for Buddy. He had been cultivating so he did not want a hot meal.

Today is grilled chicken breast and salad.

I'm surprised at how long I've been MIA on this thread. The audit went fine, we just need to give them a little more information and we'll be done.

Ellen - I'm going to make your ribs tonight, I hope it works with bone in because that's what I bought.

Sorry to hear about all the heatwaves everyone has been experiencing, luckily we have had beautiful weather for as long as I can remember this year.

PIO - not to beliddle you but 5.2 is a piece of cake, it needs to be over 6 to turn heads!:lmao:

Brandi - I really have to get back to planning menus instead of figuring it out around 5PM, yours sound great.

Alison - the Aussie Government almost recommends that the aged community install a personal or medical alarm system in case of an emergency. It's an accepted part of the community here that if an elderly family member wishes to live independently that their children get them an alarm system. Peace of mind for everyone. I hope that Fran finds something and that Arline accepts it.

The problem with this is that she's not even 65 yet, so even if it was required, she probably doesn't meet the age limit. Her apartment is almost ready, I just have to get.the guy to change out.tge toilet, fix the gate and clean out.her garage.

Allison- what about the alarms that are worn around a person's neck. She would have to pay for the service but it can be a lifesaver.

That's what we've been looking into, and we would have to pay for it. She barely makes enough money to buy groceries and pay for car insurance. She said that she would wear the pendant.

Now we just have to hope that she still has her wits about her enough to know to push the button if something happens. Fran's father laid on the ground for 3 hours until we went over and checked on him after he didn't answer the phone.
