Happy Birthday to Joe, May 2011. . Trip Report Link

Oh today I spent a little time doing one of my favorite things: calling Disney! :goodvibes

I finally took time to call the Disney Florists to get more details about the gift that I am ordering for Joe. I’m such a sap, I kept getting teary eyed just knowing how much this will mean to him.

The very helpful customer service person (Debbie) read the entire plaque to me, and even went out to their store room so that she could read to me what was written on the medal. When you give this you can really personalize it with a specific reason why you are honoring “your hero”. I just love this.

The past few years DH has really struggled with his career. He retired from a 20 year as a law enforcement officer (LEO), then took a part time LEO job at a small dept. A full time non-LEO job came open which he took, and HATED HATED HATED….it was a blessing, however, when I was laid off of my ft job in ’09. Then he found another PT LEO job that he did along with his FT hated job….so with a few exceptions he worked 7 days a week for about 2 years. This past fall, when I found a new FT job with benefits (but with less take home $$ even than my unemployment was:scared1:) he quit the hated job and tried even harder for FT LEO work, his true calling .

Its been an uphill battle. At this point he is competing with much much younger men, straight out of college and the military. Veterans receive extra “points” that pretty much guarantee that they will rank higher even than someone with 20+ years experience. Add to that the self-doubt that is inevitable when door after door is closed, the serious financial challenges, plus the fact that as a part timer he is effectively on call all the time, and its been rough. He is such a great LEO, so good at what he does, and such a great dad, that when I learned about this gift I KNEW it was the perfect gift. Its just as over the top as our whole trip but will fit in perfect. SO I was super thrilled to order it for him, all personalized, and accompanied by what will hopefully be a Mr. Incredible balloon and will be delivered tour room the day before his birthday so that he can wear the medal on his day.:flower3: Dang I am teary eyed thinking about it.

THEN….cuz its pretty dead here at work today:thumbsup2, I called Disney Reservations to make an appointment at the Harmony Barbershop. Katie is going to LOVE this. Katie can only tolerate a pony tail for an hour or so, a BBB do would be a waste --- those BBB hair do’s look so tight on top of the little girls’ hair, it makes my scalp hurt just thinking about it. A trim & some glitter is great for her and we’ll have it done almost as soon as we hit the Magic Kingdom - a 10 am appt. (maybe I can convince Joe to go get FPs for SM while Katie & I stay at the Barber, or he stays & I run).

YIPPPEEE 20 days!!!:woohoo::woohoo::yay:

Yeah, I really debated the medal...its really a lot of $ for something that is only really sentimental, not practical at all. but i figured this whole trip is a step into madness really, what's one more thing?

they have some really nice ideas on the Disney Florist site, I'd never looked at it before (good thing)

Oh and I forgot to add that I'm going to gather all the various "change cups" around the house & hit the bank to cover some of our spending money & this...so don't tell joe I'm cashing in his piggy bank to pay for his present :rotfl:
(can you tell I am so NOT into working today?)

Do it! I am a convert to the power of the change cups!

I love change cups! Especially my husband's little piggy bank. He always carries cash, so his piggy fills up quick.

I think the medal and certificate is a great idea.

Your trip is getting so close. Pretty soon you will be driving under the Magical Arch and all will be well with the world.

:goodvibesI love the gift you are giving Joe. It is amazing thoughtful and a perfect gift for him(based on your little story anyway).

I can't wait to hear about his reaction when he gets it.

Is it May yet?

I think sentimental is good!!! You know how precious life is and that the moments you make together are really ALL that matters. I am sooooo happy for you!!

Praying you have a very

Just popping in for an update! Your trip is soooo close; I'm so excited for you! Love the gifts you chose for Joe - they sound really special and heartfelt.

I know what you mean about his job struggles - I'm at the exact wrong age where I am too expensive to be able to transfer to another department, and I would like to. Well, actually, my husband pointed out that I have the absolute worst job and absolute best job, all in the same job. Departments here would prefer cheap over experience any day. *sigh*

Regarding the Harmony barber shop - I'm thinking Joe might need a little 'do and glitter himself, since it's his birthday trip . . . :rolleyes1

I'm joining in if you don't mind. Anyone who can make a great "Tim's Peeps" sign is the best in my book. Now, I have to go to sleep and get up early for work, but I'll be back later to catch up on all.

That was great, wasn't it...:goodvibes

Mary Ellen, you are :worship::worship::worship:

Mary Ellen, I have gone through this PTR now and am basically caught up.

First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS on the weight loss to you and your husband. That is absolutely adorable.

Your daughter is just too cute and she is going to have a blast and will remember eerything from this trip I am sure.

Your plans look great, and I'm sure DH will have a great birthday.

I look forward to following along.

P.S. We're all awaiting your approval to use your magnificent creation on Tim's thread in our signature. :goodvibes

HI Cathy! I will pop over to Tim's thread....no Permission needed!!! I just haven't had time to edit my OWN signature yet:lmao:

Our Chain is SO SHORT!

I have been busy busy busy with just all sorts of stuff and have been getting behind on everyone's tr's and ptr's so if I have not popped over...sorry!!

Over Easter weekend I did some baking with Katie, spent some time working on my friends' new online store, and of course had Easter to prepare for! Friday night my niece stayed over, so after dinner with my sister, we three came home and cooked and colored easter eggs to help the bunny.

Fortunately I had done some clean up during the week which allowed us to have friends over for dinner on Saturday (they are good friends, so a little clutter was not a big surprise!). I got nothing physical accomplished but we had a lot of fun just catching up, joking around, enjoying dinner and sharing a bottle of wine. These are our good camping friends, and after a long winter and no camping trips yet this year (saving for Disney of course!) we were past due for a get together. After our friends left, Katie put out an apple for the Easter bunny (because of course I did not know that Joe had eaten all the carrots!!) and got settled in to bed. I was so glad that the rain skipped us, so I could go out first thing Sunday (like 4 am egads!) and hide all the eggs.
5663499180_164e7253eb.jpg
, She was just so cute when she came down stairs on Easter morning. She was thrilled ot have Zoobles in her basket and had to open them even before she looked for eggs. I asked her if she didn't want to see if the Easter bunny hid eggs but she told me "Oh I looked already from my window upstairs"...sigh a girl after my own heart!

Sunday's weather was just beautiful, and after church Katie and I had time for a short visit to see my grandfather. He is 95 and just so loving. I just adore my grandfather. he is my favorite...don't tell mhy parents, but its just true. there's no special reason, just lots of little ones through out my whole life that make him so special to me. I worry for him because my grandmother died last June - two months shy of their 73rd wedding anniversary. They were in assisted living together and it just breaks my heart that he is alone now.

anyway, our Easter dinner was at my house so I spent the whole day cooking, then eating and cleaning up! exhausting but nice!

All along in between other things, I have been adding to my suitcase and crossing things off of my list. little things like contact lenses and tooth brushes and dental floss. sneakers ,sandals, just all sorts of stuff! I was thrilled with a find a walgreens: a spiral bound book of index cards--one side lined the other blank. I decorated the back of the book so that it appears the unlined side is the front so that we can collect autographs. the index cards are perforated so I can tear them off & put the autographs in a book next to the phots I will get of each character.

I ordered a new laptop for Joe, after his took a major dive and literally died. we dissected it to destroy personal data and he has been complaining about not having a laptop ever since. Actually as I am writing this I am running updates and installing Office on his new machine. I can't wait to be odne iwth it becuase he is a bit anxious!!!

I've been working on obtaining the digital copies of a few of our disney movies to put on our mp3 player and his computer so that we can watch them without dragging along all of our movies.

I ordered a great backpack for the parks today. I have been on the hunt for a quilted, light weight backpack ever since I realized that the bag I thought would be perfect was not. Here is a picture from etsy:
il_570xN.198565619.jpg

As part of my to do list, I prepared about 40 cups of dog food tonight and premeasured each day's portion for Thor in a ziploc bag. Thor has a wheat allergy (yup, celiac disease in dogs!) so I have to prepare special grain free rehydrated food and then mix it with rice and meat for him. There have been many occasions where I cook for him and not for us! sheesh!

Finally I have been watching the weather for mid=May in Disney. yikes. 89-90 for the whole week at this point. good thing we are not going in July!!:rotfl:

I'm glad you had a good Easter.

That's a cute backpack! Do you remember the etsy seller? I already have a bagallini (yeah, I hopped on the bandwagon) that I found at TJ Maxx for our trip but I would like to see what that seller makes.

Wow I didn't realize dogs could have celiac disease. That must have been a pain to figure out. Poor guy.

UGH! I have been watching temperatures lately and I think yesterday it was 92 degrees in Orlando. :scared1: I was looking forward to mid-high 80s in May. I guess I'm going on a hunt for a small battery-operated fan now!

It sounds like you had a nice Easter:goodvibes

I never thought of leaving something out for the Easter bunny:confused3 Geez, what kind of mother am I? We leave stuff out for Santa and the reindeer, but never thought about the poor bunny.

I am glad to hear Katie likes Zoobles. I never hear people mention them and thought maybe Caitlin was the only person who likes them. I don't really get their point and she only plays with them when she first gets them, but she insists on buying more all the time. And Squinkies. Those are spread all of my house.

I love the backpack. I bought a mini Jansport to use for our trip. I had a baggalini last year, but I hate having a strap across my chest.

We just need to make it through 2 more weekends!

Zoobles are new for us. Her friend has them (her mom calls them bakugan for girls!):lmao::lmao::lmao: she has been asking for them but I just say "put it on your birthday list" Her birthday is in July so that's a million years for a kid. She was over the top excited to get them and has played with them every single day. now if only we could get rid of the polly pockets, or my littl epony, or puppy in my pocket, or barbie, or ....something's gotta go!!! I think that my little pony and puppy in my pocket collections are going in the yard sale box after Disney. (How sad is it that everything is "before Disney" or "After Disney".)

the bag has been an issue. I had a nice freebie from work but it turned out to be a shoulder bag, not a back pack, and I really wanted to be able to distribute the weight of the water bottles that I know will be in there. Ok, also, I was thinking that a fabric bag would be a cool way to put some of my Disney pins on that I am not so interested in trading, so that I can show some off but not trade them. :rotfl:

TWO WEEKS! In two weeks from now I will be getting ready for my last day of work before DISNEY

:woohoo::woohoo::yay::dance3::dance3::banana::banana:

Forgot to ask before.. what website do you use to check the weather?

Most of the ones I see only go out 10 days ahead.

I always use accuweather.

They give actual predictions for 15 days, and then offer the daily averages after that:

http://www.accuweather.com/us/fl/orlando/32801/forecast-month.asp?mnyr=5-01-2011&view=table

I've used them both times in the past and they have been pretty good. Definitely helpful in trying to decide what to pack in January when there are big differences in the highs & lows.

I just ordered my Disney Rewards Card!!! SO EXCITED! I have been using my Visa for eVERYTHING - groceries, lunch, etc & then paying it off. I had them leave $10 back so that when my account closes on May 19 (haha still time to shop!!!) I can call & have the rest transferred over.:banana:

Glad to hear you had a nice Easter! Your eggs looked stunning!!!

I never thought of leaving something out for the Easter bunny:confused3 Geez, what kind of mother am I? We leave stuff out for Santa and the reindeer, but never thought about the poor bunny.

All we've ever fed is Santa and his reindeer, too! :scared1: My walkway still sparkles from the reindeer food. :lmao:

I can't fault her for not letting go of the MLPs. I still have a whole box of them. :lmao:

When I cleaned DD's room the other day, I did chuck Barbies and other toys, but I didn't have the heart to throw any MLPs into the Good Will box.

I will guess that they are all the new collection, but if you have, by chance, any of the vintage MLPs, some of them sell pretty well on that auction site. :thumbsup2 (Well, most vintage toys sell well online)

YAY FOR TWO WEEKS!!!!!!!! That's awesome!!!!! :cheer2:

Don't fret...I've not updated my PTR in a while either (I'm still catching up on everyone else's since DH's business trip to Florida).

Love the Easter eggs (I kind of miss not doing that anymore). Sounds like you had a lovely Easter.

I love the backpack.

Be glad you aren't there this week...it's been 96 three days this week. :scared1:
