The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

Sorry, I totally forgot to post about the Pinewood derby. It went really well. I'm really fortunate, in that Jacob really doesn't care about winning. For him, it was all about spending time with Alan and making his car. He ran his car 5 times. He came in second, third, and the rest fourth places. He was happy.

Give that little guy a kiss for me.....Nana kisses make babies feel better :thumbsup2

Good thing it is not about winning for Jacob, there are some kids whose cars have got to have been made by Dad. No way children can compete with those things. Jacob did great on his own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a rainy, lazy day here- not to much going on.
kids a mess when she eats and there are no signs of improvement.

I love rainy days if I have nowhere to go. We have a metal roof so the rain kind of tings off it...Buddy falls asleep listening to it and I fall asleep listening to him :rotfl:

You have me :lmao: picturing your DD. Kids enjoying their ice cream tickle me although I was never so amused when my own were little.

Did anyone see Wife Swap last night? The father from Florida is a co-worker of mine! :happytv:

How are you doing?

:cheer2: For "The Boy's" report card! Great job chatty guy!

My niece Amy teaches and she is supposed to keep the chatter at a minimum. She is really generous with the kids because she was never quiet in school....still never stops talking. Buddy says she is my side of the family for sure!

Please be sure to remind us of your date. My mind is mush and I will forget if you don't.

My nephew only wants "Stacey" on the t.v. the entire time we are in the hotel room. She is a cute girl but by the time she gets to #5 on the Top 10 list I'm ready to smack her!:rotfl:

For some reason she reminds me of Samantha Brown and I always want to swat her too!

We got ice cream at work on Thursday (my class won the attendance award for the grade for March...they just don't stay home! :lmao:) and I had one girl with ice cream all over her face and hands...they were eating out of a bowl with a spoon. :confused3

It has got to be something you said :lmao::lmao::lmao:

afternoon all. Not much going on here today. It's rained all day. Very gloomy here. Rain always makes me very tired. I just can't get going. Right now I'm going stir crazy. We had all these plans for today, but they've all been cancelled due to weather. We've just been inside watching tv all day and I'm about to lose my mind. Not sure WFD--our fridge is about bare--we had trouble finding stuff for lunch. Guess I should start thinking about it. Hope everyone is having a nice weekend

I would have been asleep most of the day so I would have no time to be bored ;)

Well I did make it to the store, after I cleaned up the house enough to clean it tomorrow. Sad isn't it? I had to clean in order to clean :sad2:

I wanted to go out to dinner but Buddy is craving a big ole grinder" so that is what we will have. I am going to splurge and get one for me too. I am 1.5 pounds under my goal so I think I have a cushion and I really want one of those good grinders too!

Phew glad you don't work with Mr. Scary!!!! I actually felt really bad for the "Tie Man"......he seemed broken & so sad to me.

I know! I was surprised because that is not how he is in person - at all.
But, they tape a LOT and edit it down to what they show on the program.

Vickie, So glad you got your date. May 26 will be here before we know it. Congrats to your lad on a good report card!! :cheer2:

Becky, did the fridge arrive yet? What style did you get? I have a side by side now and hate the size of the freezer since it is my only one. Our fridge is the next appliance that is going to have to be replaced and I do not know what I want. DM has the bottom freezer. I am seriously considering the regular top freezer again...time will tell. Hope you got a Sub-Zero for all that wonderful cooking you do!

Sheryl, still sending positive thoughts to Angelina. I hope she sures something good soon. good luck with aide situation.

Nancy, you had me laughing with your story about Marisa and her friends giving you clothes for your dates.

Marisa, how is Kady enjoying her allergy free lifestyle! She is very lucky. Hope you are getting settled in the new house.

Robyn, I used to go canoeing but now as an adult I am a great big chicken!!:rotfl: I am picturing you hosing down your Mickey Bar covered child at FW!My son is the only child who does not even want to try ice cream.

Lauren, I was going to ask you about new pics, boy were they worth the wait. You have two handsome boys there. What a proud big brother, and with great reason.

Laura, Congrats to Greg!!!

Maria, your burgers had me drooling. They sounded wonderful. I just got done reading my new Food Network Mag and it was loaded with burgers too!

Marilyn, enjoy your time with your sister!

Ellen, FYI you are fitting right in and we are glad to have you. So glad Doug's dad is on the mend. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Gretchen, make sure Hailey gets her balloons! Celebrate your Dad's positive news. You all deserve some good news lately.

Aimee, the wedding weekend is halfway over and you are truly being a sport! Hope the BBQ reception goes well, get some good takeout on the way home.

Bethany, how is the migraine? Don't worry your cleaning will be there waiting for you.

Glynis, So glad your DS & DH enjoyed the derby. That was always a highlight in my house growing up with my brothers. I have memories of them carving cars and put weights in the bottom for speed...is that legal??

Kathy, I want to wear a big hat and have a mint julip too!! Thanks for being our glue and being the caring straight forward lady you are. I appreciate you more than you know.

Janice, remember it is ok to kiss and tell!!! My DH was a blind date and I have never been happier.

Lucas, that is kinda cool about your co-worker on Wife Swap. I wish I saw him.

Stephanie, I am hoping Kris makes it to the finals. I thought he was great last week again.

Lindsay, I have to agree with some of the other girls. Originally I tried with you but not once have you ever acknowledge my post either. I have truly met some wonderful woman on this thread, who I am proud to say are now my friends. I look forward reading how everyone is daily and always know that my day will somehow be brightened by one or all of them. I wish you and yours well, and hope you take some wonderful advice people have shared to brighten your days too!

If I have left any of you out please forgive me.

We had a big change of plans today. DS ended up catching my sinus cold. The poor little guys nose was running something awful, I was chasing him with tissues all morning. We decided against going to the communion party. I just didnt think it was fair to have my DS making anyone else sick. He took a 3 hour nap but kept waking up because of his nose. He is doing much better now I gave him some medicine. Due to being home unexpectedly we ordered Chinese food...yuck, yuck. We keep trying to new places but have been very unsuccessful.

Hi ladies! (and any men lurkers ;))

I am keeping John company while we watch the game 7 of the Celtics. My new fridge is here. It is extremely basic. No sub-zero for me! My house is kind of basic, and I'm not putting outrageous $$ into my kitchen because it won't work with the rest of my house. I am excited that the fridge works and keeps everything cool. That's all I ask. :)

I did repaint the kitchen while I was waiting for the fridge to be delivered. I found some paint in my storage room and I was feeling productive so...

Here are the mint juelps I made for the Kentucky Derby:

NASTY! Neither John nor I could even drink this. Bourbon is NASTY, yuck. It went down the drain. I do like bourbon in recipes--like bourbon glazed chicken, but NOT for drinking. YUCK. (Apologies to anyone that likes bourbon :) )

Dinner was a cobb salad---no avocado, light dressing of aged balsamic :

So I had this strange dream last night but only remember bits of it. I was paying for something but using a debit card. For some reason, you added the tip in through the debit card machine - not written in on the little paper. :confused3 Well, the machine malfunctioned. The total was something like 43.17 and I was trying to make it an even 50 as the total. Well, it charged me $1000! So then I had to go to the guest service counter (at Target) to have them fix the error. But I had to use the bathroom, so I was looking for it, and it didn't say "Women" on the door, it had my first and last name. :confused3 Then I woke up. :rotfl:

The night before, I had a dream that I remember very little of, except that I woke up confused. Somebody said that there were the words "home sweet home" written in a cornfield like a corn maze...in Texas but you had to see it from the sky. In my dream, I wanted to go to google maps satellite view so I could look at it, but then when I woke up I was just really confused because I didn't know what the word "home" meant. :confused3

Good Luck with the new fridge Becky!

I have never had a mint juelp:confused3 they look pretty but never had one.
I have only used bourbon in pecan pie & sweet potatoes.

Tonight we had barbeque chicken, cole slaw & grilled onions...ate in front of the t.v. watching the Kentucky Derby.

I didn't mention it but yesterday was DMs last night in her current position, she starts new Monday & still has not settled into the idea at all, if you could keep her in your thoughts & prayers that would be much appreciated.

Quiet here...Greg is doing homework & I'm watching HGTV. DM is in bed with a painful back & foot. Hope everyone s having a great Saturday night.

Glynis~do you have derby pics?

Have an of you ladies seen glass mulch used? Curious how it looks in person.

Sorry ,but what is the Pinewood Derby ?

It's a thing our Cub Scout troops do. Each scout is given a rectangular block of wood and some wheels and axels. With their father, they are supposed to create a fantastic car that they will race. It's really a big thing here, and some father's have been known to totally leave their sons out of it so they can win. It can get really competitive, but luckily, ours didn't. It really was all about the boys.

One of the scouts made a car that looked like a pool table, and another one was a banana. There was also an ipod car, a creamsicle car and the Batmobile. There were several (like Jacob) that just made a hot rod. It was a fun night!

I got my date for surgery...May 26th.

I happy with this date coz the footie season will be over and I wont miss any games !!

I'm glad you have a date and that it'll work around the game schedule!

Yay for the fridge! :yay:

We stopped at Arby's for dinner to-go on our way into town tonight, got home, and found that the dogsitter had locked the door between the house and garage - neither of us thought to bring a housekey, just a garage door opener  So we sat in the garage and ate dinner while we waited for the sitter to run the key over.

I am trying to upload pics to Facebook of the wedding but I'm having issues :confused3

Nancy - Thanks for the kisses for Jacob! He was thrilled that y'all were interested in him.

I totally forgot to take pictures at the derby. I'm going to have one of the other mom's send me some pics, if she will.

Ann - Each car has to weigh the same amount, so you can totally shave down one end and then use weights on the underside to make up the difference. Alan did that with Jacob's car last year and it was really fast! I feel really badly for one little scout in our troop. His parents have been in Hawaii every year for the Pinewood derby. However, J.J. is left at home with the nanny. Instead of taking the time to make a car with his son, J.J.'s dad pays someone else to make the car, and then J.J. races it. If his dad could see his face, he'd realize how much it would mean to him to have his dad there with him, without a fancy car. J.J. has won first place the last 2 years, but he really doesn't care, because his parents can't be bothered to give up their Hawaii trip to be with him. It really makes me mad, because they go to Hawaii at least 4 times a year. They own a house there. So, they could totally schedule this trip when it's not the derby. Grrr. Ok, rant over!

We ended up at Home Depot tonight looking at vegetable plants. Alan really wants to get the garden in. However, he didn't find what he wanted. We did manage to get some Mickey head paint chips to make a countdown calendar for our DL trip! Luckily, there was a Sonic next door, so we stopped in there for dinner. The kids really enjoyed it. Then we came home and made ice cream sundaes.

All the Mickey bar comments have made me really crave them! We leave for DL in under a month, and I'm going to have one when we get there. Actually, I'll probably only have an ear, and then Alan will have to finish the rest.

Good night, my friends. Alan is taking the first shift with the baby, so I'm off to get some sleep. 3:00 comes awfully soon!

:cool1: Enjoy that new fridge!:cool1: You are going to think you are in a whole new kitchen with the paint job and the luxury of cold food!

Sending prayers out to your DM, I wish her well!!
I have never heard of glass mulch?!?!

Sad, some people just don't get the whole parenting thing. That poor child is always going to remember their rotten choices!

Not sure what we will eat today. I have to get myself out to the store.
I am real tired, we did not get a good nights sleep around here.

Have a good day all!
Ann

That's really sad. Poor kid. My brother was in Boy Scouts, and I remember him making Pinewood Derby cars with my Dad. It was a big deal. I can't remember if he ever won though! I think one year his car did not even race straight--it kept turning in circles.

Today I am making moules frites for Sunday family linner. Plus, an arugula salad and some crusty bread.

Another new crockpot recipe here today: Indian chicken. I'm really hoping it's good. I'm also making a pina colada pudding dessert for tonight.

Nothing much on tap here for today, except church. It's still raining, so we may be instructed to build an ARC! Goodness, I've never seen such a wet spring as we are having. If you see animals marching two by two towards Utah, you'll know why!

Good morning everyone.

Feeling pretty yucky here. Nothing to worry about just lets say men have a better life.

Last night Alex and I went with friends to an astronomy exhibit and lecture at a local college. A lot of geeks were there with there telescopes:eek: Holy cow those things are expensive and huge. Too bad it was sort of cloudy no stars to be seen just a fuzzy moon:laughing:

Not sure what is going on here I feel like going back to bed. Plus I went to pour cream into my coffee and it was bad. I am now using whip cream it is not the same.

Glynis Don't even think about sending that rain here. The animal here have already paired up and left on the ark :lmao: I think we are in another year of no boating because of the high lakes and rivers. The farmers around here are having a difficult time getting into the fields.

There's something VERY ironic about not being able too boat because of too much water. :confused3

Last night on the Travel Channel, that guy that eats way too much was on again (Man vs. Food) and he was in New Orleans. Kat, I thought of you because he ate oysters at Acme. He ate 15 dozen of them. He also (NOT at the same time) ate beignets (CDM) and a po boy (Mother's). Gosh I was getting hungry. :lmao:

Last night WFD was pizza ordered in. Not sure if I ever posted that here or not. We also had garlic knots. :goodvibes

Leave it to you :rotfl2: I meant power boats because of the wake the cause.

We also watch that nut. I can figure out how he doesn't get sooo sick. I don't feel like eating when I am watching him eat all that stuff.

Gretchen- I would love to come.....and I already know the Blues Clues songs.....Nola likes the music so I dvr'ed evey show so it is on in the background a lot. I will also volunteer to spend time with her in the hot tub if she will share her Krispy Kremes :goodvibes. Seriously, thanks for the offer to sop, I think we are all set but I am totally jealous of you right about now.

I was actually thinking of Kady. Is there something food-wise she always wanted while there but couldn't have because of the food allergies. I'd love to pick her up a mickey head rice krispy(s) or some of those mickey cookies, etc. If for no other reason than to celebrate her being able to have them.

I never had one until my last trip! I'm not a big "sweet" person - I dig the popcorn more. But it was a beautiful day and this kid walked past with one. My colleague said "yummmm, I want one of those" so I ordered one too and was hooked! They are different than bars in the grocery store. The chocolate is dark and really thick. The ice cream is solid so it doesn't melt all over you. We had one Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday that week.

Yummm. Ok that settles it. Since you've twisted my arm  I guess I'll have to try one. For strictly scientific purposes you understand. Calories consumed for scientific study don't count, right?

Aimee To bad you won't be able to eat any of that food. Hopefully there will be something for you. Dogs are great that way. They know just when to bring out their good manners

Kind of like kids. :rotfl: At least mine anyway.

By the way, I am going to enjoy gardening through you. I would love to have a garden of my own but first, I don't have the time and second, I am a notorious plant killer. I even managed to kill a philodendron. :sad2:

Oh no.....I Want Revenge and jockey Talamo have been scratched from the derby, the horse sprained his ankle....:sad1:

I saw that. How sad for everyone. I tried to quote you about coming down with us but it disappeared. I do remember how taken you were with Hailey and honestly, if you could slip away and meet us there, we'd love to have you. I don't have any dinner reservations at all. I am planning on cooking 4 of the dinners and doing take out for the rest. We do have a couple of character breakfasts planned since Hailey likes those, but that is all. There is an extra bed in the second bedroom since Hailey sleeps with Paige or the fold out in the living area if you brought one of your guys.

OK, this baby really needs to sleep or cooperate so I can get something accomplished today. Well, I guess I did, I got pretty much caught up, right?

But when he's that cute, he doesn't always need to cooperate. ;) Seriously, he is precious and I do appreciate the photos since I haven't done the facebook thing yet. Like everyone else, I love the one in the basket, but I think that one is the most likely to induce mortification and the oh-mom eye roll in later years.

For him, it was all about spending time with Alan and making his car. He ran his car 5 times. He came in second, third, and the rest fourth places. He was happy.

And that is all that really matters. Glad he had a great time. And I am sorry for poor little J.J. That story just broke my heart.

I don't really care for the mickey ice cream bars, but I'm pretty particular about my ice cream. My daughter gets a few every time we go, and she hasn't gotten any neater. We only get them at Fort Wilderness so she can eat it outside the RV and then hose off. The kids a mess when she eats and there are no signs of improvement.

I just love that mental image! Hailey is still like that. Maybe I ought to feed her one in the tub just to save myself the trouble.

Did anyone see Wife Swap last night? The father from Florida is a co-worker of mine! :happytv:

No, but I certainly would have watched Peg if I'd have known. Sometimes that show blows my mind and sometimes it just makes me so mad I have to change the channel.

Yes got to the footie.

Went with good friends, sun was shining and we won the match so a fun day all round.

Pretty sore now tho but worth it !!

Holy cow Vickie! I didn't know you were PLAYING! I thought you would be safely watching. Are you sure you should be doing that so close to your surgery?

My nephew only wants "Stacey" on the t.v. the entire time we are in the hotel room. She is a cute girl but by the time she gets to #5 on the Top 10 list I'm ready to smack her!:rotfl:

:rotfl: I feel the same way. When Amanda started walking doing the "lazy people in the lazy river" impression I was really to scream! I'd much rather have Blue's Clues.

I LOVE the Mickey bars, they taste sort of like Dove bars...really rich. :lmao: at your DD and ice cream. We got ice cream at work on Thursday (my class won the attendance award for the grade for March...they just don't stay home! :lmao:) and I had one girl with ice cream all over her face and hands...they were eating out of a bowl with a spoon. :confused3 Then to top it off, it was the end of the day so the bathrooms were locked. (Don't ask why they lock the bathrooms at the end of the day...I have no idea.)

FIVE Mickey Bars? Okay I love them but GEEZ! They are SO BAD for you...I even took a picture of the "Nutrition Facts" on the back. I have been going in August, and the heat drains my appetite so I tend not to eat a whole lot (but I drink a TON of water!) on those trips, but yet I kept gaining 10 pounds a trip. :confused3 I think living off Mickey Bars will do that to you!

Ok, as the daughter and sister of former teachers (both special ed), that just cracks me up. But now don't go ruining my Mickey ice cream love before I get my first one. I don't intend to read the nutrition info thankyouverymuch, so please, please, please don't tell me. ;)

Ellen, FYI you are fitting right in and we are glad to have you. So glad Doug's dad is on the mend. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Kathy, I want to wear a big hat and have a mint julip too!! Thanks for being our glue and being the caring straight forward lady you are. I appreciate you more than you know.

Janice, remember it is ok to kiss and tell!!! My DH was a blind date and I have never been happier.

Ann, I second all of these! Ellen does fit right in. I want to wear a big hat (not so much on the julep) and think Kathy is wonderful for all she does for us. And I can't wait to hear about Janice's date! Kenny and I were set up too! And I'm so glad because I would never have selected him myself since he wasn't my type.

Sorry your little one is sick. At least he still feels well enough to run around the house. I much prefer that to the colds that have them lying around looking miserable. Those always broke my heart.

Hi ladies! (and any men lurkers ;))

NASTY! Neither John nor I could even drink this. Bourbon is NASTY, yuck. It went down the drain. I do like bourbon in recipes--like bourbon glazed chicken, but NOT for drinking. YUCK. (Apologies to anyone that likes bourbon :) )

Your drinks looked lovely even if they tasted yucky. But I do agree about bourbon. Kenny will drink it with coke, but I only use it to cook with. It makes a lovely bbq type marinade for pork tenderloin.

And thank you for sharing the story about your brother's derby car. That is just hysterical. :rotfl: I can just picture your poor brother going round and round.

It's a thing our Cub Scout troops do. Each scout is given a rectangular block of wood and some wheels and axels. With their father, they are supposed to create a fantastic car that they will race. It really was all about the boys.

I read this to Kenny and he laughed. He thought it was funny. I think it's just sad. Kind of like in my young niece's soccer league. It was the age bracket where they didn't even keep score, they just wanted the kids to learn the sport and have a good time. Every single game, every time, the dads were all keeping score in the stands. :sad2: I mean come on, all those kids cared about was getting their ice cream after it was over.

Aimee, that sounds funny and oddly romantic. ;) Nice you didn't let it get you stressed out. I'm so type A, I'm ashamed to admit I probably would have been too aggravated to have dinner. :guilty:

I'm not sure what we're having for dinner tonight, the guy is working on my kitchen floor today so I'll have to clean the saw dust up first. He is supposed to be putting in my new countertops while we are on vacation. Now this is a nice surprise from my husband, but he waited until last night to tell me he was going to have that done too. Now I have to decide on a top before I go. :scared1: It looks like formica is the only thing in the budget, but anything would be better than the lovely (not!) countertop I have now.

We also have to retile the bottom of the kids' shower. We found out there is a leak under their shower that is rotting the sub floor. The tile guy assures me he can just cut out the bottom part. It's in a 50's yellow and obviously they don't make that color anymore so I'll have to use a whitish replacement and hope it will look like an accent color and something we meant to do.

Dinner was a cobb salad---no avocado, light dressing of aged balsamic :

Becky - You are an incredible cook, we all know that but my word woman you can make a freakin egg look so darn good!:worship: Enjoy that new fridge!!

So I had this strange dream last night but only remember bits of it.

You know I love you, you make me :rotfl2:!!!

I didn't mention it but yesterday was DMs last night in her current position, she starts new Monday & still has not settled into the idea at all, if you could keep her in your thoughts & prayers that would be much appreciated.

You've got it my friend.

He also (NOT at the same time) ate beignets (CDM) and a po boy (Mother's). Gosh I was getting hungry. :lmao:

Last night WFD was pizza ordered in. Not sure if I ever posted that here or not. We also had garlic knots. :goodvibes

I saw it too, their oysters are awesome!

Hmmmm, let's see, if I recall you have ordered in pizza occasionally....

Oh my friend, you don't know how badly I'd love to come along BUT if I did my guys would NOT be with me......:rotfl: Hope y'all have a great time!!!!

WFD - We're doing our Cinco de Mayo dinner today....Chicken enchiladas, guacamole, refried beans and margaritas!
