Zombie threads.

I don't get it? What's the deal? Is it supposed to be funny or are people just so atrophied they can't think of a new thread to start?

I noticed it is usually newbies so I wonder if the are doing a google search and those threads come up. Then they post on them not realizing the dates.

I think that's all it is, too.

Besides, I've definitely seen posters get flack here for the opposite - starting a new thread instead of searching to see if their question was already discussed. Can we say - can't win?

Usually when posters get flack for not looking to see if something's already being discussed, the topic is very current and there's at least one thread on the topic on the first page of whichever board.

There is another site I am on that uses vBulletin (which is the software for DisBoards) and they have a setting that will lock any thread six months after the last entry, so it can still be read but closed to more posts. And if there is a valid reason to reopen it, such as posting results of of a problem first discussed, a moderator or webmaster can reopen the thread.

On the flip side, people get blasted for not using the search function and starting a new thread on an old already-discussed topic.

LOL, not threads people go back to off and on, just out of the blue threads dug up. Sometimes you come on the board and there are several just bumped up for some reason.

Some of it seems to be posting bots running up a post count to be able to post ad links, as they post nonsensical replies ('this is plan excellent thank you I try many things.') or just repeat something in the thread.

I dunno why it's zombie threads, and dunno that that's what it is for sure but that's what it seems like. Some I've seen have actually been ads - the other day a couple threads popped up, one at least a Zombie I think, with the post being all 'laser eye surgery in third-world nations is an excellent plan look into it' or some such.

Sometimes it's innocent--someone googling something, the old thread pops up, they post on it not realizing it's old. (that could be the case with the JW thread). It kinda weirds me out when the OP is someone who hasn't posted here in years, and that's why I'll often look at the thread, and check dates. In the case of a religious thread or a political thread, I might say something about the new policy. And I sometimes like to post "zombie thread!" so people realize that it's an old thread, especially if I notice people are getting sucked into the old arguments.

I've also noticed that the old threads get bumped up by spammers. That happened the other day on a thread I subscribed to. Freaky.

Anyway...I get when people do searches, for questions they need answered, but the ones bugging me lately are all the old family-drama type threads. Those have to be brought up by Zombie Trolls. Who has the time or want to bother with that. Is it really that funny to someone to see how many people will post before we realize its a zombie?
