NO! The kid did not do the right thing. He lost track of weaponry after his hunting trip!!!

It should be explained, that carelessness put him into the situation, he took the correct action to resolve it, but he must still take the punishment. Then I would let him sleep late each day, do some homework (can you make up kindergarten homework?) and we would go out for ice cream as a reward for accepting the responseability like an adult.
