Options in Austria
As much as I've always wanted to visit Salzburg, and was pretty excited about that part of our trip, the more I research, the more I'm finding it may not be the best option for us after all!
Although it's a smaller city surrounded by lovely mountains, it's still very much city, and overly touristy city at that, meaning costs are a lot higher than I was expecting, and crowds could definitely be an issue (although probably less given we're visiting in shoulder season). The city is spread out and hilly enough to make getting around slightly inconvenient with Grandma, and we can't afford to stay in the more charming central area - we'd be relegated out to the main station area. Finding affordable accommodation with stair free access, internal lift, walk-in shower and air-con has been a real problem.
After looking at several options in different parts of the country, I'm liking the look of Bad Ischl.
Bad Ischl is at the end of the bus line from Salzburg, just past the lovely alpine lake we were going to visit on a day trip. It seems to be a well connected town, also on a train line to other local areas of interest. Access from Paris would be via Stuttgart and Attnang Pucheim, which is a small and easy to manage train station on the main line to Vienna. I think the extra connection would be worth it.
The town is in a valley surrounded by mountains, with a lovely river through the centre and a charming and compact old town area. It should be easy enough to get around even with the wheelchair. While there's not a huge amount of accommodation to choose from, there are a handful of nice looking boutique hotels and B&Bs that would be appropriate, with appropriate pricing and extras included like breakfast, fully flexible terms and even a regional sightseeing card offering significant discounts on local attractions.
There are many attractions that would be easy to access on public transport.
Hallstatt is the insta-famous quintessential Austrian village nestled on the lake. Whether we want to deal with the crowds is another story. You can also take a cable car up the mountain for amazing views and a tour of the historic salt mine.
Lake Wolfgangsee with the towns of Strobl, St Wolfgang and St Gilgen. In St Wolfgang you can take a historic cog railway up Schafberg mountain to an amazing lookout, or in St Gilgen there is a cable car to the top of Zwolferhorn.
Lake Traunsee with the towns of Ebensee and Gmunden.
There's even another easily accessible ice cave in nearby Dachstein. To be fair, the ice cave on the other side of Salzburg does look better, but Dachstein also has the famous Five Fingers lookout and a suspension bridge over a glacier.
And then of course we'd probably want to do a day trip to see Salzburg.
There's even a nearby town called Bad Aussee, which I kind of want to go to just to take a photo with the town name lol!
